GBH

Perfume & Piss is the name of GBH's new LP (catchy huh?), marking the UK punk pioneers' eleventh studio effort in their thirty-plus year existence. Hellcat (aka Tim Armstrong of Rancid's label) is doing the honors, and in celebration, the band is currently touring North America and will hit the ultra-swanky Highline Ballroom on July 23rd along the way. Outernational, RazorBlade HandGrenade, and Cerebral Ballzy will support and tickets are on sale.

Razorblade Handgrenade is also scheduled to play another NYC show three weeks later, playing support on the reunion of NYC's Inside Out at Santos Party House. Tickets are on sale.

Full GBH dates, and some recent video of the band playing with members of Rancid, are below...

Holy Fuck @ MHOW in May (more by Tim Griffin)
Holy Fuck

Canadian electronica/post-rock band Holy Fuck will be in NYC to play a one-off show at Webster Hall's Girls & Boys party on Friday, October 2nd. If you RSVP on Going.com and get there before midnight, entry is supposedly only $1.

Holy Fuck are currently working on their new album, a follow-up to 2007's LP. That album was nominated for the 2008 Polaris Prize, but it wasn't until this year that a band with "fuck" in its name was honored with the award. Currently, the group's only other date is a Halloween show in Chicago.

Dirty Sound System
DANCE

It's been a while since I was this excited about a weekend, dance-wise. One of the many reasons why is Dirty Sound System is coming to New York this Saturday (8/1). According to their website, the French duo of Clovis Goux & Guillaume Sorge...

...spin everything from house, electro free jazz to spacey disco, acid house, krautrock, sunshine pop, folk, rythm'n'blues, music soundtracks... it depends on how far the dancefloor is ready to go.
Based on the awesome set their Dirty compatriot Pilooski spun at Mister Saturday Night back in May (which you can now download here) and their excellent selections on Dirty Edits 1 & 2 & Dirty Space Disco I have no doubt about their ability to get a dancefloor moving.

Info on the party they are deejaying on Saturday night below, plus download their Summer Tape 2009 at the top of this post and some mixes by Prince Language's (who is also deejaying the party) here. Also, be sure to check out Dirty Sound System's latest release Dirty French Psychedelics (available at Turntable Lab and on iTunes).

Daniel of LA Riots @ Webster Hall - May 16, 2008 *
LA Riots

Cut Copy set the bar pretty high with their very energetic and fun set Wednesday night. Luckily things continued down that path for the rest of the week. Friday night I made it to Webster Hall just in time to catch the last half hour or so of a very disco-fied set by James Murphy. He also threw in some classics which you could not help smiling at when you thought about where you were. Speaking of which...as much of a weird/hellish crowd the Webster Hall-based event drew, I really appreciated having space to dance and not sweating my ass off merely from being inside the venue. After James, LA Riots spun a great, banging set which was much more what I was expecting from them after experiencing their lower key set at Love last month. Daniel (1/2 of LA Riots -- the other half J'ob was not there) had the crowd perfectly warmed up and right where it needed to be for what can best be described as the dance explosion that ensued when JFK and AL-P got behind the decks. Things went from everyone getting down as they had been, to a sudden rush of people storming the stage and everyone in the place going accordingly bananas.

MSTRKRFT @ Webster Hall - May 16, 2008 *
MSTRKRFT @ Webster Hall

They played for about 2 hours, from 2ish-4ish and covered every great electro song you've heard recently along with tons of new stuff. For anyone who's seen them the past 2 times they were here, the set was much more along the lines of their CMJ set (which I thought was much more exciting and creative) than their one last month at Studio B...

H&LA @ Studio B - May 17, 2008 (more by Ryan Muir)
Hercules and Love Affair @ Studio B

...which is where I headed Saturday night to catch Hercules & Love Affair's debut performance that everyone has been talking about since. Overall I thought it was a great show...for a debut performance. The first couple of tracks were a bit shaky, but the group quickly rebounded with "Blind" which was still good, albeit different, without Antony (see for yourself here. A few of their songs had me absolutely losing it (namely "Athene" and "You Belong") while others were just ok. I think the problem I ran into was...I kept comparing them to Escort, and in some instances found myself wishing Zena Kitt was singing in place of Nomi, though I'm not sure if that would've worked out as ideally as it did in my head. Hercules & Love Affair's tracks have a much more modern sound vs. Escort's classic disco.

Speaking of Escort, don't miss them at Brooklyn Masonic Temple on May 30th. Tickets are on sale.

At the end of Saturday night when all was said and done, I had a great time...there is nothing like live disco. Sadly that's one thing there isn't enough of, but luckily there are plenty of other great dance happenings in the city this week:

Those three blue pictures (by Ryan Muir) are of James Murphy deejaying Webster Hall on Friday night (the same party MSTRKRFT & Grandmaster Flash played). Stay tuned for details of James Murphy's new DFA party coming to Santos' Party House.

A different DFA party happens on Tuesdays at 205. Tonight (May 20) @ 205 Tuesdays is... HORSE MEAT DISCO (The Eagle London), TYLER POPE (!!! / LCD Soundsystem), JUSTIN MILLER (DFA) & JACQUES RENAULT. To quote David Bruno, "horsemeat disco guys are in Hercules and Love Affair's band" (who isn't?).

Hercules & Love Affair played Studio B Saturday night. And if you were wondering what "Blind" sounded like without Antony....

Alex English, James Murphy, LA Riots, Does It Offend You Yeah? and even Grandmaster Flash deejayed the party at Webster Hall on Friday night (May 16, 2008), but people didn't start going completely nuts until MSTRKRFT took the stage. More pictures below....

GRANDMASTER FLASH & audience
Grandmaster Flash @ Webster Hall

Even Grandmater Flash, the "first dj to play the turntables as a musical instrument", uses a laptop now. That said, he was the only DJ at Webster Hall on Friday night that ALSO had a crate of records with him. He played the usual hip hop favorites and the occasional rock hit by bands like The White Stripes and Nirvana. When not mixing, he could often be found at the front of the stage hyping up the crowd and his long career that includes an induction into into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. More pictures below....
