[Gary Numan]'s stop in New York to promote "The Pleasure Principle Tour 2010" marks the 30th anniversary and re-issue of his groundbreaking album, which he is performing in its' entirety. Written when he was a mere 21 years old, The Pleasure Principle debuted in 1979 but only charted Stateside a year later. Propelled by the monumental single, "Cars", the album was a watershed as disco yielded to new wave and power pop...Numan was supported by Rasputina and Boom Boom Satellites (who recently played Irving Plaza) at the sold-out Best Buy Theatre in Times Square Saturday night (10/23). The NYC show was part of an ongoing tour. Gary performs the full album each night. Not content to stand idly in front of his instrument, Numan took every opportunity to move and thrash about; though for the duration of the performance of The Pleasure Principle he seemed content to let the music wash over the crowd. And they soaked it up, bouncing and singing along to songs like "Films" and "M.E.". As the album is only 41 minutes in length, it was a short time to the highly anticipated performance of the ubiquitous "Cars" and Numan did not disappoint. The Pleasure Principle concludes with "Engineers" and in spite of the poignant darkness of the lyrics ("All that we know/Is hate and machinery") the crowd cheered wildly as Numan gracefully expressed his gratitude with a beaming nod. -[Consequence of Sound]

On The Pleasure Principle 2010 Tour, the modern music icon will perform in its entirety the album that climbed into the Top 20 on the U.S. charts 30 years ago propelled by his unforgettable Top 10 single "Cars." The shows will feature material spanning across NUMAN's career, including tracks from his forthcoming album Splinter which he's currently working on in the U.K.Gary Numan will play Nokia Theatre in NYC on October 23rd with Emilie Autumn. Gary Numan was set to play Coachella this weekend and then additional sold out shows in both LA and San Francisco while visiting. We already knew he was in danger of missing Coachella (which he definitely is now confirmed as not playing) , but based on the two statements he released today, it looks like all three are not very likely to happen. Those frustrated statements below:

"The last thing I expected this morning when I woke up was to hear that volcanic ash might be preventing us from flying to America. At the moment the very best British Airways are offering us, and this without any guarantee, is to put us on a sunday flight that gets in to Los Angeles in the afternoon on sunday. That is one step away from useless and means that, if we are very lucky, we might just make it to the festival site (a three hour plus drive from Los Angeles) in time for our slot but without a single second of rehearsal with Robin Finck, the American based guitar player for the US shows, who has never played with us before, and no real chance of collecting and checking the equipment that we have hired for those shows, which includes all the keyboards, guitars, drums etc etc.Bad Lieutenant may or may not make it to Coachella. The Cribs are definitely not coming. Los Campesinos! aren't playing Coachella, but they cancelled a show for the same reason too.We are still waiting to find out if British Airways can offer any better alternatives. Very upsetting though to see such a huge opportunity slipping through your fingers. I am glued to the TV news at the moment." [Gary Numan]

NIN @ the Wiltern - Sep 10, 2009 (bloodandheadlines)

Last night (September 10th) was the rescheduled final stop on NIN's "last" ("Wave Goodbye") tour. The show was at the Wiltern in L.A. and ran over three hours and featured many of the same guests that appeared at the previous LA show which took place at Henry Fonda Theater in LA two night earlier. Nine Inch Nails played four LA shows total, two in Chicago, one in Toronto, and four in NYC. Peter Murphy was a special guest at the last two NYC shows at Terminal 5, and at the two in Chicago. Show openers changed along the way, and were either The Horrors, Mew or HEALTH.
Gary Numan (who played at all four LA shows), Mike Garson, Greg Puciato and Ben Weinman (of Dillinger Escape Plan), and NIN producer Atticus Ross all played with the band at The Wiltern. Eric Avery, who was there at the Henry Fonda, didn't return, but fellow Jane's Addiction (who co-headlined the first leg of the Say Goodbye tour with NIN) member Dave Navarro showed up to help perform three songs at the Wiltern. Speaking of porn stars (he seems like one anyway), Ron Jeremy didn't join the orgy on stage, but did take it in from the audience.
In one clip, posted below, Trent (again) explains that he and the band will still be making music, they're "just not going to tour as Nine Inch Nails" (he also said he wouldn't perform The Downward Spiral again).
The setlist, and a bunch of videos from the show, below...
HEALTH NIN Gary Numan jam insanity @ Henry Fonda (by reneebarton)

** The Wiltern show scheduled for Saturday Sept 5th is now happening on Thursday Sept 10th - this is now the final show **The first of four 'Wave Goodbye' NIN shows in LA was at the Palladium on September 2nd. Gary Numan joined the band as a special guest at that show, and at the Echoplex show on 9/6, and again last night (9/8) at the Music Box @ Fonda.Hello all-
Sorry about the hassles with the show not happening last night and tomorrow's rescheduling. If it would have been possible to pull these off, I would have. Anyway, here's the new plan. I appreciate your patience and understanding - we're attempting to make sure that everyone has the best experience possible and we're at full power.
NEW FAREWELL SCHEDULE FOR LOS ANGELES:
9/6 Echoplex (unchanged)
9/8 Henry Fonda (rescheduled date)
9/10 The Wiltern (rescheduled date)
Unlike the first two shows though, Gary was not alone at the third. The Henry Fonda audience didn't get Peter Murphy, but they did get Mike Garson (David Bowie, etc), Eric Avery (Jane's Addiction), Danny Lohner (NIN & lots of stuff), AND Greg Puciato (Dillinger Escape Plan). All five of them came out to play songs with Trent Reznor and band.
Gary Numan and Eric Avery were on stage together for a cover of Gang of Four's "Anthrax" (and for "Cars"). Plus, HEALTH opened the show and later joined Nine Inch Nails and friends on stage too (see picture above). There were two encores and two Joy Division covers. No full albums played, but there were 31 songs total. Full NIN setlist below...
Gary Numan w/ NIN @ The Palladium - 9/2/09 (yipemike)

"It becomes plainly obvious what's happening. The crowd [at The Palladium] gets even wilder. By the time we get to the next song my thoughts have become primarily focused on when to breathe and when to shout out lyrics. You can't do both. There's no room to breath half the time either, as in half the time the people around me are pressed up against all sides of my body and they can't even expand. I'm drenched in mine and a dozens of other people's sweat. There are a couple of times where I decide that the lyric is more important than the breath, and in those times I also seriously believe it's possible I might die. Multiple times. One particular time I'm about to fall backwards (as far as I can fall, that is, not very far with all of the people behind me) and a man (In a radiohead shirt) puts his hands on my back and pushes me upward again. That review is of last night's Nine Inch Nails show at the Palladium in LA where Gary Numan took over Peter Murphy's job as Special Guest Legend, and where NIN performed TDS for the second time on the "Wave Goodbye" tour. They also did it at Webster Hall. Peter Murphy joined them at both Terminal 5 shows, and both shows in Chicago. The show before LA was in Canada. THE NEXT LA SHOW IS CANCELLED, and then there are two LA shows after that. Palladium setlist and videos below...Eventually, about halfway through [NIN playing The Downward Spiral for the second time on this 'final' tour], the crowd pushes me into an area of calm fist waving and body moving, with not harsh movements to fucking kill me. Still completely worth it. Hearing that ENTIRE album in that setting with everybody else screaming the lyrics at each other, amazing. They continue the set after they play the entire album, but after they finish the album I realize 'Holy shit ok that was mind shattering, but if I don't get liquid right now I'm going to die." So I squeeze out of the crowd and go back to get a coca cola, which the lovely lady gives me free of charge. Going back to the floor, I decided a nice spot at the back is just fine. Trent Reznor's special guest tonight was Gary Numan, who sang two songs that influenced NIN's sound when Reznor was just deciding how to go with the band, according to him. The songs were 'Metal' (which you probably haven't heard) and 'Cars' (which you HAVE heard and if you haven't I'm fining you ten internets) and both of them were fucking awesome."
