Stranger Cat is Cat Martino's electronic pop project with Sven Britt, and they recently released their debut album In The Wilderness on Joyful Noise. The album features her Sufjan Stevens collaboration "I Promise," as well as "Ecstatic Energy," which was just given the video treatment. That video premieres in this post, along with a stream of a new non-album song, the ballad-y "The Tracks." Check out both below.
In addition to Sufjan Stevens, the album also features collaborations with Christopher Powell (Man Man), Darby Cicci (The Antlers), Reggie Pace (Bon Iver) and more. (And in addition to playing in Sufjan's Age of Adz band, Cat has also played with Sharon Van Etten and The Shins.)
Stranger Cat will celebrate the new album with a release show in their hometown on Wednesday (5/20) at Rough Trade with Port St. Willow, Salt Cathedral, and "loads of special guests", and Geographer who has been added as headliner. Tickets are on sale.
They also have upcoming dates opening for Sebadoh. Those are listed, with the new song and video, below...

Slayer/Glass Candy/Polyphonic Spree/Slayer surfer @ FFF Fest 2013
Closing Fun Fun Fun Fest, Slayer treated Austin to greatest hits and then some: "Raining Blood," "South of Heaven," "Dead Skin Mask," "Seasons in the Abyss," etc. They also dug out the aforementioned "Die by the Sword," a high point off their 1983 debut LP, Show No Mercy. The eighth Fun Fun Fun Fest happened last weekend (11/8 - 11/10) at Austin's Auditorium Shores, hosting three days of music and fun (fun fun), with such acts as MIA, Deerhunter, Slayer, Television, Thee Oh Sees, Kurt Vile, Cut Copy. Johnny Marr, The Walkmen, Jurassic 5, Killer Mike and loads more. Many of them played again as part of the FFF Nites shows, including shows presented by BrooklynVegan and Invisible Oranges.
After fooling no one with a false ending of "South of Heaven," the third backdrop of the night unfurled at the back of the stage: a parody of the Heineken logo reading "Hanneman" and bearing his life dates. The top read "Angel of Death." Reign in Blood's terrifying opening track - and closing number on Auditorium Shores - now serves as an epitaph for Slayer's fallen co-founder. - [Austin Chronicle]
We were there in the thick of it and, as mentioned above, you can check out pics from Day 1 HERE and HERE, pics from Day 2 pics HERE and HERE; and pics from Day 3 are HERE and HERE. See you again in 2014 Austin.

Freelance Whales @ Webster Hall - 11/7/12
After Freelance Whales had to cancel their original 11/1 date at Webster Hall due to Hurricane Sandy, they postponed it to November 7, which was, of course, the day of the Nor'easter, but they managed to play the Manhattan venue this time. Support came from Conveyor and Geographer. With the announcement of the new date, they also offered an option to donate to hurricane relief with your ticket purchase.
Freelance Whales put out their most recent album, Diluvia, in October and played almost every song from that at the show, and worked in a number of tracks from Weathervanes as well. The full setlist and more pics from the show are below.

The Treasure Island Music Festival went down over two days on a small island in the San Francisco Bay, juggling two stages and acts that ranged from Death From Above 1979 to Cut Copy to St Vincent. The bands and sets were staggered so that changeovers allowed for the audience to see all of each band which, on day 1, included appearances from Death From Above 1979, Geographer, Aloe Blacc, The Naked & The Famous, Shabazz Palaces, YACHT (who play NYC in December), Battles, Dizzee Rascal, Chromeo, Buraka Som Sistema, Flying Lotus, Cut Copy, and Empire of The Sun...
"Sometimes a performance impresses you simply because of its natural and flawless flow. This was Chromeo on Saturday [10/15 at Treasure Island Music Festival]. The Montreal duo known for creating modern 80s-inspired electro-synth pop got one of the largest crowds of the day moving immediately as they opened with "Fancy Footwork." The hits kept coming with classics like "Don't Turn the Lights Off," "Bonafied Lovin," "Tenderoni" and set closer "Night by Night." Chromeo over the years has cemented themselves as one of the more fun and original acts in electronic music, Saturday was no disappointment whatsoever."Chromeo, who since played Moogfest, play their first of two shows at Terminal 5 tonight (11/4).
