Don't plan on being at the BrooklynVegan official CMJ showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday night (now with more Suuns, less Yuck)? Looking for something to do afterwards? The above flyer illustrates another October 21st CMJ option, and though there will be no live music, there will be free beer, giveaways courtesy of Converse, free t-shirts, free beer, prize packs, free beer, and lots of people who work at record labels in the house including two who will be playing music . DJ sets will be by True Panther Soundsystem, Matador founder Gerard Cosloy, Lemonade, and Matador's Dave Martin. The party is also completely free and requires no badge at all. Oh, and it's all in the name of buying music.
Speaking of the 21 year old Matador aka Beggars, the Blonde Redhead/Pantha Du Prince tour, two shows at Webster Hall included, kicks off in Philly tonight (10/15), and 4AD aka Beggars has released a new free remix to celebrate. Grab that above. All dates below...

Chris Swanson (Jagjaguwar/Secretly Canadian/Dead Oceans): I'm not sure that people don't know labels now. I still think the music geeks know labels.Check out the whole thing at Carrie's NPR blog.
Portia Sabin (Kill Rock Stars): I think labels are caught in a cultural bind: No one really wants to know what a label does; it's like the sausage factory. Even long-established bands have a hard time talking about what labels do.
Gerard Cosloy (Matador): I mean, HoZac couldn't have a singles club otherwise.
Mac McCaughan (Merge): I'm one of those people that doesn't pay attention, either, I guess; I don't know what HoZac is!
Carrie Brownstein: I don't know HoZac, either.
Gerard Cosloy: GOOGLE THAT S---.
Mac McCaughan: GTS!

Matador Records co-owner Gerard Cosloy was the owner and resident of a nearly 100-year-old home on Lindell Avenue [in Austin] that burned to the ground early this morning.---Cosloy and another person escaped a fire this morning at the home near the intersection of South Congress Avenue and West Live Oak Street, said Austin fire Captain Andy Reardon.
Fire officials received the call about 3 a.m., Reardon said, and crews arrived to find the entire house on fire. Police had to alert the people inside the home that it was on fire, Reardon said. The 3,888-square-foot home, which is estimated to be a total loss, was evacuated safely.
The two-story house was built in 1911, and is located in the Bouldin Creek neighborhood.
Officials said the fire did about $500,000 worth of damage. The cause is still under investigation, officials said.
Cosloy sounded shaken but calm this morning. "There are a lot of people who have a lot less than I do who deal with a lot worse, but this is pretty bad," he said.
