At 68, Bryan Ferry is one of the oldest performers at this weekend's Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, and one of the most debonair. But the former Roxy Music singer and veteran solo artist was one of at least two artists who wore a tuxedo for their performance at the annual festival in Indio Friday night. We already posted Outkast and Dum Dum Girls. Here are the rest of the pictures from the first dusty day of the first weekend of Coachella 2014 (which is also streaming online). The photos continue, Replacements and Bryan Ferry included, below...
The other, a bit surprisingly considering his raucous musical legacy, was Paul Westerberg, 54, the perpetually tousled leader of The Replacments, who reunited last year after a 22-year hiatus to perform three shows (Coachella was the fourth). Yet, while Westerberg was quick to doff his tuxedo jacket, Ferry kept his on, although he undid his tie. Their sartorial style notwithstanding, Ferry and Westerberg have little in common, but both delivered winning performances that represented two very different -- and influential -- chapters in rock history. Sleigh Bells / !!! / "ladies night" @ SS Coachella, 12/22/2012
Here are shots from the final day of the second voyage of S.S. Coachella that went down at the end of December. Though most of the boat was a little partied out from the wild day in Jamaica (and afterparty) the day before, people got back in the spirit for Girl Talk, Sleigh Bells and !!!. For the latter's final number, !!! invited members of Warpaint, Father John Misty and others for a group sing-a-long. After that it was a "ladies night" party that made sure everyone was bleary eyed for their trip home the next days. Says our photographer Greg Cristman, "Amazing that no one fell overboard."

QUIKSILVER PRO NEW YORK SURF CONTEST WILL RUN: Update from Long BeachDamn. You can see the list of who was supposed to play, below...
An important update from Long Beach - Quiksilver is working closely with the City of Long Beach to preserve the heart of the professional surf contest scheduled to start on Sunday, September 4 in light of the impact of Hurricane Irene and concerns for the Long Beach community, which suffered significant damage from the storm. The Quiksilver Pro is scheduled to start its 11-day "holding period" on Monday, September 5. The Quiksilver Pro Trials presented by Unsound Surf will run on Sunday, September 4.
The situation has been changing daily, and we recognize that City resources are focused on hurricane restoration and clean up as first priority. In that context, we have been informed by the City that the festival and music components of the event are no longer achievable.
The Quiksilver Pro NY is first and foremost about the surf contest and Long Beach has an incredible surfing tradition and spirit. We are committed to holding the ASP tour event at Long Beach so that together we can promote the sport by bringing together the best surfers in the world to this terrific community.

Girl Talk and tennis fans @ Terminal 5
"When New York lifts the curtain on the 2011 U.S. Open, a brilliant rivalry among an uncommonly gifted generation of men's tennis players will take center stage. After the earthquake, but before the hurricane, Girl Talk and Matt & Kim played a private U.S. Open party, sponsored by Heineken, at Terminal 5 (on Wednesday, August 24). Diana Wong was among those in attendance, and she took some pictures. They continue below...
The chief protagonists: Roger Federer, at 30, fighting time and more physical foes in pursuit of a 17th major title; Rafael Nadal, whose victory last year completed a career Grand Slam; and Novak Djokovic, on track, with a 57-2 record, for the best season in the history of the men's game....
...But first comes a more daunting name: Hurricane Irene, whose strong winds and torrential rains are due to hit Long Island on Sunday, the day before the U.S. Open is scheduled to begin.
Tournament officials took the unprecedented step of canceling Arthur Ashe Kids' Day on Saturday and announced they'll shutter the Billie Jean King Tennis Center altogether on Sunday, scuttling the customary pre-event practice sessions and interviews. Meantime, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered an evacuation of the city's low-lying areas, and all Broadway shows were canceled for the weekend.
All told, it's an ominous beginning for the season's final major, which is scheduled to conclude on a somber note, with the men's championship to be contested on the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. [Wall Street Journal]
Watch out House of Vans, it looks like yeat another corporate-sponsored show-series is vying for contender of "best free shows" in NY this year. Taking place over fifteen days in Long Beach, NY (and finally explaining that mysterious Flaming Lips date), The Quiksilver Pro New York series ("the first-ever ASP World Championship Tour stop on the East Coast of the United States") will feature surfing, skating, and BMX demos from some of the biggest names out there (Kelly Slater, Tony Hawk, etc).... not to mention some major music acts like The Flaming Lips, Girl Talk, Interpol, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Q-Tip, Neon Indian, Wavves, Taking Back Sunday, Saves The Day, and many more. Best of all, admission to everything is FREE.
All dates with the full lineups are below, but the music portion kicks off on Saturday, 9/3 with Girl Talk, Saves The Day, "a special surprise performance" & more. Sunday has Interpol, Portugal. The Man, The Ettes (who play NYC tonight), and more. Monday (Labor Day) will see Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Civil Twilight, and more. 9/9 is probably the most impressive show with The Flaming Lips, Q-Tip, Neon Indian, Wavves and Charlotte O'Connor. Saturday 9/10 will play host to a "Benefit Concert Hosted By Kelly Slater & Friends + The Max Weinberg Experience" with Taking Back Sunday, The Sounds and SLUNT. More details on the benefit show are TBA.
If you can't make it to Long Island, "The Quiksilver Pro New York will be broadcast from September 3-15 by MSG and Fuse, with programming that will feature some of the biggest artists, athletes and live performances from the event."

As the rowdy crowd chanted his name, Girl Talk, aka Gregg Gillis, took the stage in a hoodie and white bandana... and opened his laptop. Girl Talk's set was a seamless, ever-evolving collage of samples, cutting across genres and eras as he combined top-40 gems in new ways and even rap lyrics over Rush... Girl Talk's anarchic good-times music suited the celebratory vibe at the outdoor venue, where the crowd seemed part music nerds in dorky glasses, part sun-baked tubers in swimsuits and glowing bracelets. -[mysanantonio]A week after Governors Ball, Girl Talk spent his Saturday (6/25) in New Braunfels, Texas (near San Antonio), playing a mashed-up set to a raucous outdoor crowd with support from "hillbilly disco" rockers Bright Light Social Hour. Pictures from that show are in this post.
In other Girl Talk news, Greg Gillis recently made the instrumental for his track with Jim Jones and LLoyd, "Believe in Magic", available for free download. Hear the original, alongside all tour dates and more pictures from Texas below.
