Hailing from the Long Island village of Sea Cliff, Turnip King make indie rock the old fashioned way, owing much to early '90s acts like Helium, Bettie Serveert and Eric's Trip. The band's new EP, Moon Landing?, is a nice melding of the beautiful and dissonant, and will be out on cassette and digital on May 28. We've got the premiere of "Rooms/Fleece" from it in this post.
Turnip King have a couple local shows coming up: April 26 at Big Snow Buffalo Lodge with Girl Toy; and May 11 at Death by Audio w/ Fat Creeps (whose debut album will be out this year). Those dates are listed below.

So far, Brooklyn indiepop outfit The Hairs have worked solely in the lower depths of fidelity, making songs that were as tinny-sounding as they were catchy. (That also goes for main man Kevin Alvir's previous bands, Knight School and L'il Hospital.) While scratchy pop has its charms, it's nice to hear The Hairs make the leap into mid-fi for their new EP, The Magic's Gone, which is out March 26 on Break Records.
For the new EP, Alvir (and bandmate Jacob Danish Sloan of Dream Diary) has re-recorded some of The Hairs' previous a-sides with, you know, real drums and microphones. You can check it out for yourself by listening to the record's title track, which makes its premiere in this post, and can be streamed below.
You can also go see The Hairs live this weekend in NYC when they play Big Snow Buffalo Lodge on Saturday (2/9) with Hippy, Milk Dick and Girl Toy. Surely with a venue name like that, they won't close for a "blizzard." $7 at the door and more info is here.
