DOWNLOAD: Iran - "Buddy" (MP3)
Iran @ CMJ 2008
Iran (WITH Kyp Malone) will play a show at Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn, TONIGHT (12/18). Also on the bill: Fakers and Lone Wolf and Cub (Ryan Sawyer of Tall Firs and Stars Like Fleas - not the metal band). Presumably, Iran will, uh, run... through tracks from their upcoming record Dissolver, due on Feb 3, 2009 via Narnack.
Back to CMJ for a second....before 2 Live Crew played, a Kyp-less-and-still-named-after-a-'rogue-nation', Iran, played a renamed-The Soft Pack-less (they cancelled) and Lee "Scratch" Perry-less (he cancelled) Narnack Showcase this year, at Santos Party House, with the Sundelles, Vaz and Restavrant. Check out the overdue pics from that show above and below, and note - that's Doug Anson that sat in for Kyp. That probably won't happen again though, as we're told that Kyp plans on playing many more shows with the band, including as part of a 2009 tour out of NYC.
In related news, Kyp Malone's other band TV On The Radio, is garnering accolades-a-plenty including album of the year from The Onion AV Club, and from everyone's favorite weirdo Eric Wareheim of Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!. The Onion AV Club also cornered Santos Party House co-owner Andrew WK about his favorite record of the year.... Lee "Scratch" Perry's Repentance. Hmm... didn't he have something to do with that record?
In more related-to-Glasslands-tonight news, Tall Firs have teamed up with Awesome Color to play the Knitting Factory on Dec 19th (tickets here). Ryan Sawyer's other band, Stars Like Fleas, are recording a new record and have scheduled a show at Le Poisson Rouge on January 24th with Au (tickets here).

DOWNLOAD: Moon & Moon - Act II : Hands of a Man (MP3)
Back in 2006 it seemed that Devendra Banhart was involved in a new project called Moon and Moon. That is still true, but Devendra is not really the focus anymore - just one of the many guest participants...in a new rock opera...
Reflections of timeless struggle, self-fulfilling prophecy, and age-old triumph, with flashes of modern affectation. A fluid and evolving seven-act performance; an epic tale of angst, hunger, tragedy, failure, and ultimately, hope. The dramatic opening of this musical / avant-theatre piece begins with the young voice of our seven year old narrator. She describes in 2 short lines what we are about to witness: seven perspectives of one king's war with himself. Moon & Moon provides the framework of a journey through an eternal human battle, borrowing from religious heritage and a colorful quilt of belief that draws upon the root myth of our collective humanity. Our story re-creates an archetypal battle that is not only historical fiction, but our own contemporary fact which exemplifies our self-destructive nature. Through the journey of witnessing a different character's perspective in each act, our king comes to the realisation that he is not only the walls which he has built, but the walls that have been destroyed by his own hand and command.VII Acts of an Iron King was released by La Société Expéditionnaire on Nov. 11, 2008. Act II is available for download above. All seven acts are listed below. The full list of "players" is as follows:
Contributions by members of An Albatross, Lewis & Clarke, Barkus Born and Stephonik Youth with guest appearances by Devendra Banhart, Gibby Haynes, and Bat For Lashes.
Will Lemon, Steven Kurtz, Jay Hudak, Lou Rogai, Brother James Barbee, Ed Klinger, Louis Schwadron, Geoff Vick, Melanie Moser, Elizabeth Louise Tordis Gagnes, Paula Henderson, Eve Miller, Katie Porter, Matthew Boynton, Ivan Berko, Olivia Galarza, Stephonik Youth, Gibby Haynes, Devendra Banhart, Natasha Khan, Julian Rogai, Tom Asselin, Lauren Tralala, Zumi Rosow, Jane HirshipsThe record release party for this new album is happening today (Sunday, December 14, 2008) at Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn. I don't know too much about the show, who will be there, etc, but I think at least that Moon & Moon will be joined by Gibby Haynes (who also played a show at Warsaw on Friday). Wet Ropes and DJ Megan Awesome are also on the bill according to the venue. More pictures (and the act list) below...

"Buzz buzz! That's the sound of Passion Pit turning their newfound 'it band' status into concrete plans. For starters, the Boston area boys have signed to Columbia for the UK release of their debut EP, Chunk of Change, in February. Frenchkiss is still the band's home in the States and will actually co-release Chunk of Change in the UK with Columbia." [Pitchfork]Passion Pit played for about 30 minutes (they don't have that much material) to a packed (too packed?) Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn on Friday night (12/5). Their next NYC show will be at Bowery Ballroom. All tour dates HERE. More pictures below...

Thurston Moore Introduces Early Music Videos by David Bowie
Theater 1 (The Roy and Niuta Titus Theater 1), T1
Held in celebration of the recent gift from the David Bowie Archive of music videos to the Museum, this program presents a special selection of works by the celebrated musician, actor, and producer. Bowie, who began playing the saxophone when he was thirteen years old, worked as a commercial artist before studying mime and, later, playing in bands. In 1969 he co-founded Beckenham Arts Lab in South London, a crucible for experimentation that hosted artist studios, poetry readings, and events such as light shows, theatrical and dance performances, and puppet shows. For several of his videos, Bowie collaborated with the photographer and filmmaker Mick Rock, best known for his photos of 1970s glam and punk icons including Iggy Pop, Queen, the Ramones, Lou Reed, and the Sex Pistols. Thurston Moore, of the "No Wave" band Sonic Youth, provides commentary throughout the program.

MGMT/Chairlift @ Glasslands, NYC - April 7, 2008 (the blendband)
MGMT played at 1 am, came on stage messing around playing "The Youth", "Brown Eyed Girl", "Purple Haze", an Alice in chains song and jammed out and played some other stuff. -DavidTonight (April 8) they're playing a Gen Art Film Festival party.

Chairlift @ Music Hall of Williamsburg, Valentine's Day (Feb 14) 2008
Chairlift opened that MGMT/Yeasayer show at Music Hall of Williamsburg back on February 14th. All three bands call Brooklyn their home. All three bands are friends, or at least Chairlift and MGMT are because the two bands are going to play some more shows with each other when they leave on a short tour together later this week. And although MGMT is not advertising a Brooklyn show, I'm pretty sure that the band "Tenspeed" (listed on Glasslands' schedule) that is playing with Chairlift at Glasslands TONIGHT (Monday April 7, 2008) is really MGMT in disguise (possibly now with a new member).
In related news, MGMT made this really cool 3-D video that you can actually use 3-D glasses to watch on the Internet. I am a sucker for 3-D stuff, and besides the fact that the video takes forever to load, I have to admit it's pretty cool. Find a pair of 3-D glasses (or make your own) and watch it at their site.

There were plenty of opportunities, but I only caught Matt Ward and Zooey Deschanel's new band She & Him once during SXSW. It was a short, but sweet free outdoor performance and interview on Friday afternoon (March 14th). The whole thing was streamed on MPR too, and you can listen in their archives.
The performance was approximately their sixth-ever live show (as you can hear them say in the stream). One of their first was in San Francisco earlier in the month at Noise Pop. One of their next is May 18th at the Great Meadow Fort Mason in San Francisco too, and strangely
Zooey has this coming up at Glasslands in Brooklyn too.....

Destroyer's Dan Bejar (also of the New Pornographers and Swan Lake) is the more high-profile member of Vancouver's Hello, Blue Roses, but the duo's work actually hinges on the pristine crooning of Sydney Vermont. [Time Out]Hello, Blue Roses played their first NYC show (probably their first U.S. show even) at Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn last night (Feb 16, 2008). It was also their first live performance together in 18 months. For more on HBR, see also....
I couldn't make it, but 'klk' said, "this show was ......interesting". More of Leia's photos, and a video by Sound Bites, below...

"Dirty Projectors. Or High Places. Or The USA Is a Monster. They’re basically making this pop music that is appealing to a lot of people but has textures that are very avant and very experimental, while at the same time being accepted by mainstream crowds. That’s something that didn’t exist in New York. When I moved to New York, pretty much the best bands in the scene sounded like Gang of Four. You know?"That and more in today's Gothamist Todd Patrick interview by John Del Signore.
"Cakeshop. I like Glasslands. Those are two places that have all the legal things they have to have to be a club while at the same time being relaxed places that are about the music. I like the Knitting Factory."
"I was handing out the fliers on the sidewalk outside of Bowery Ballroom. The bouncer came over, knocked me down and knocked the fliers out of my hand."

Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn is currently closed. Well, despite some non-believers, they are in fact reopening soon...
Dear Sexy Friends,Continued below...
We are happy to announce that GlassLands will be reopening! Our first event will be the Lolita Party on August 17th. We will also be having a big ol Grand opening gala on Sept 7th to celebrate our new official legit status.
Big thanks to all our friends who were routing for us and especially to Death By Audio! There were quite a few rumors of why GlassLands had to shut down. The truth is Rolyn and I were chosen as finalist on the hit tv show America's got talent. We had quite a show stopper/jazz hands routine but we lost, so we're back. No biggie.
Some important info:
Best Fwends @ Glasslands Gallery - May 25, 2007 (CRED)
The Brooklyn venue sent this letter...
Dear Friends, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs played there too.
Unfortunately the glasslands has to shut down for the next few weeks and cancel all shows.
We apologize to all the bands that have shows booked with us but unfortunately this one is out of our hands and there is nothing we can do. But believe me we will all be working our asses off to reopen as soon as possible and be better than ever.
lots of love
Brooke, Rolyn, Aaron, Jeff and Derek

Now that I finally got the Best Fwends post out there, it's finally time for the one about one of their friends - another Todd-P-Baltimore-Wham-City-Dan Deacon-Spank-Rock-Punk band that I've been getting pretty excited about lately - THE DEATH SET.
TheDeathSet @ Glasslands Gallery, Brooklyn, NY - May 25, 2007 (CRED)
This is also my chance to finally bring up the water balloon incident...
Last Friday was a show at Glasslands put on by Bikes In The Kitchen. It was a pretty great line-up, with Pterodactyl, Team Robespierre, Best Fwends, and theDeathset. The show was a sweaty good time (very sweaty, perspiration was condensing on the metal roof and occasionally dripping down on the crowd), until a random tragedy hit right at the start of Deathset's set. Some girls thought it would be funny to throw water balloons down on the crowd from the balcony. And it was funny. Until one of them, for whatever possible reason, decided to start throwing them past the band at the back of the stage where all of the amps/speakers/cables/sound equipment was.....[Suckapants on May 28, 2007]..........
....Meanwhile "Fuck you you fucking fuck" girl decides instead of simply giving me her details it would be a better idea to call the police after first trying to fight me all the time me thinking how ridiculous it actually is that my first fight will be with a girl. Luckily peoples pull her off. So in summary, this girl is not only an imbecile and an idiot, she is also a narc, causing the party to end. The police come and side with me after they hear the story and I tell them I don't want her to be arrested and they advise me to get an attorney which I don't have the first clue about and obviously being in a touring band can not afford. [TheDeathSet - June 4, 2007]The Death Set have a new (twelve song) EP out this week. It features remixes by Dan Deacon and Bonde Do Role. Tonight (June 22, 2007) and tomorrow they play shows in NYC followed by a whole bunch more shows all over the place. Tonight is going to be especially nuts because they're on a bill with Matt and Kim and Parts and Labor - Above the Auto Parts Store....
