At 68, Bryan Ferry is one of the oldest performers at this weekend's Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, and one of the most debonair. But the former Roxy Music singer and veteran solo artist was one of at least two artists who wore a tuxedo for their performance at the annual festival in Indio Friday night.

The other, a bit surprisingly considering his raucous musical legacy, was Paul Westerberg, 54, the perpetually tousled leader of The Replacments, who reunited last year after a 22-year hiatus to perform three shows (Coachella was the fourth). Yet, while Westerberg was quick to doff his tuxedo jacket, Ferry kept his on, although he undid his tie. Their sartorial style notwithstanding, Ferry and Westerberg have little in common, but both delivered winning performances that represented two very different -- and influential -- chapters in rock history. We already posted Outkast and Dum Dum Girls. Here are the rest of the pictures from the first dusty day of the first weekend of Coachella 2014 (which is also streaming online). The photos continue, Replacements and Bryan Ferry included, below...

Austin Psych Fest Day 1 - 4/26/2013

Sunday was also about giving credence to the forbears of pysch-rock. Roky Erikson put on an energetic show to a loving and enthusiastic audience. The main attraction, and headliners for the fest, were the Moving Sidewalks featuring Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Any time one can catch Gibbons, it's worth paying attention, but unfortunately it seemed like some members of his old band hadn't played since the 1960s. Gibbons's familiar growl and deft guitar work did make up for most of it.

...

Sweden's Goat had the unfortunate slot coinciding with the second half of the Black Angels, but neither the crowd or the band seemed to notice. Dressed as gypsy druids, the band played a sort of jam-pysch rock with insane energy. The band wore masks, but the two female leads stole the show, euphorically jumping and singing throughout each song. [Austinist]

Austin Psych Fest wrapped up its 2013 festival at its new home of Carson Creek Ranch last Sunday (4/28). The third, and final, day of the fest included sets by Billy Gibbons' pre-ZZ Top band Moving Sidewalks, Swedish psych freakout group Goat, former 13th Floor Elevators frontman Roky Erickson, The Black Angels, Black Angels collaborator/tourmate Rishi Dhir's project Elephant Stone, Clinic, King Khan & BBQ, White Fence, Deap Vally and more.

In case you haven't been keeping up with our Psych Fest coverage, pictures of day 1 are HERE and pictures of day 2 are HERE. More of day 3 below...

GOAT @ Music Hall of Williamsburg, 4/23/2013
Goat

We already posted one set of photos from GOAT's North American live debut which happened Tuesday (4/23) night at Music Hall of Wiliamsburg. But here's a second set of pictures that we thought you might enjoy as well. If you've heard the album, World Music, they pretty much bring it to kaleidoscopic life onstage. The Swedish band are touring to and from Austin Psych Fest this weekend, so go see them if they stop near you.

Remaining tour dates, and more MHOW pics, are listed below.

GOAT @ MHOW, 4/23/2013
Goat
Goat

The lights went down and I think half the crowd lit up, as Music Hall of Williamsburg instantly reeked of pot. GOAT, Sweden's premier voodoo disco psych band, took the stage for their first-ever North American show and the packed house was primed to get their minds blown. Dressed in robes and tunics and wearing a variety of masks and hoods, the band came out and without a word to the audience started laying down the fuzzed-out, conga-driven grooves. The band were about as stoic as Oasis, but sounded fantastic and were tight as hell. (The Swedes really excel at this type of thing.) Luckily, the two female masked singers made up for it by dancing up a storm. There was also some dude in front of me doing the hippy dance the whole show but I'm trying to forget that.

We got most of last year's World Music, including "Let it Bleed" which featured a skronky guest saxophonist who looked like he just left the Sun Ra's Ark. GOAT also played both sides of their upcoming Sub Pop single. Apart from wishing the show was somewhere smaller and sweatier (like Glasslands where the show was originally supposed to happen), they definitely met my expectations for this show, even if my mind remained intact.

Opening the night was Austin's Holy Wave who definitely in the Brian Jonestown Massacre / Black Angels school of post-VU psych. They were good and their set was definitely aided by the oldschool trippy oil-based visuals from the folks at Drippy Eye Projections. Bear in Heaven kept things weird as between-set DJs.

Both GOAT and Holy Wave will play Austin Psych Fest this weekend. More pictures from last night's MHOW set are below.

Hookworms

One of the remixes on GOAT's "Run to Your Mama" #RSD13 12" is Hookworms which is not some producer/DJ but a five-piece band from Leeds, UK. The band formed two years ago or so and practice a visceral blend of noise, drone, motorik rhythms and impassioned vocals that basically demands to be listened to at top volume. (At times they're not unlike Chicago's Disappears.) The band have shared UK stages with Wooden Shjips, Sun Araw and Peaking Lights and, after a few small batch releases, have just released their proper debut album, Pear Mystic. You can stream a track below, and the whole album is also on Spotify.

Additionally, Hookworms will release a new 7" via Too Pure's Single of the Month club. The A-side, "Radio Tokyo," is a real corker and you can stream it below too. No word on an American release or any tour dates over here, but all upcoming Hookworms dates are listed below.

Enigmatic Swedish psych band GOAT start their U.S. tour next week, kicking off here in NYC with a sold-out show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Tuesday (4/23) (moved from Glasslands) and also includes a stop at Austin Psych Fest. All tour dates are listed below.

While GOAT's phantasmagoric debut, World Music, remains unreleased in North America, they do have a couple Stateside releases coming out soon. For Record Store Day (4/20), the band will release two 12" versions of track "Run to Your Mama" with eight different remixes total. (Note: These were all previously released as a bonus-CD with the initial run of their album.) "Vol. 1" features versions from Thought Forms, The Horrors' Tom Furse, Redg Weeks, and Teeth of the Sea; "Vol. 2" has mixes by Gnod and Raikes Parade, Cherrystones, Hookworms, and Cage & Aviary. There'll be 2000 copies of these babies worldwide on blue vinyl, so look out for them. You can stream Teeth of the Sea's "Greatest of All Time" mix below.

Then this summer, GOAT will release a new track, "Dreambuilding," as a 7" single via Sub Pop. It'll just be a one-off for the label, Sub Pop hasn't signed them. You can stream it over at Pitchfork. "Dreambuilding" will actually be an #RSD13 release in Sweden... maybe they'll have copies at their merch table? And hopefully they'll have copies of World Music on vinyl too, which comes is a trippy, die-cut sleeve.

"Dreambuilding" artwork, that remix stream, and U.S. tour schedule below...

goat

Goat

Swedish psychedelic collective Goat released their debut album, World Music, via Rocket back in August and it's gradually been picking up speed in the UK and North America. The definition of psychedelic music continues to widen and while recent purveyors of the genre like Tame Impala envision it the way John Lennon did by stretching pop to its trippy, mind-bending fullest, Goat are more along the lines of Grails, Om, or Prince Rama -- they want to write the soundtrack to your acid trip.

World Music sounds like the cartoonish displays of an LSD experience, with purple mushrooms and dripping, swirling objects in the background. It sounds like the way non-Hindu spiritual leaders imagine Hindu spiritual leaders sound during prayer. It sounds like what you think every band at Monterey Pop Festival sounded like if you never actually went (or watched the film). I could go on, but you get it. The whole thing is pretty fantastical and if you've yet to hear it, you can stream the entire thing and watch some videos below.

Goat will be heading over to the US in April, 2013 for Austin Psych Fest, but before they make their way to Austin, they'll stop in NYC for a show at Glasslands on April 23. TIckets for that show are on sale now.

Album stream, videos, and a list of all North American tour dates are below.

SPIN top 50 2012

SPIN have revealed their list of the top 50 albums of 2012. It continues SPIN's trend of giving love to crossover punk and metal (which they've been pretty consistent with since naming Fucked Up's David Comes to Life their top album of 2011) with the inclusion of Baroness, Torche, Pallbearer, Cloud Nothings, and Japandroids, but rather surprisingly excludes the SPIN Essential'd Ceremony - Zoo and The Men - Open Your Heart, in favor of popular blowouts by Taylor Swift, fun., and Nicki Minaj. The list also shares its #1 and #2 with the two highest Pitchfork-rated albums of the year. And no Grimes.

The list begins with the Kanye-cribbed disclaimer, "Most critics' taste levels ain't at our waist level. Ain't nobody fucking with our clique." Check out SPIN's Top 50 LPs of 2012 list below.

Leonard Cohen

UK music magazine Uncut put out their list of the top 75 albums of 2012. The top ten leans pretty heavy on long-running '60s/'70s survivors who put out new albums this year, but plenty of the list-topping regulars from newer acts are on there too, along with a few interesting surprises (Sun Araw, M Geddes Gengras & the Congos!). You can check out the full list below.
