Liturgy at Death By Audio (more by Jesse Lindmar)
Liturgy

Loved by some and love-to-be-hated by others (but isn't that how the great ones are treated?), Brooklyn "trancendental black metal" crew Liturgy are preparing to release their new LP Aesthethica for new label Thrill Jockey on May 10th. Download a pair of tracks above. Stream them below.

The band is currently in Europe to play a string of dates that include Roadburn this weekend, but will return to the US to play a Record Release show at Knitting Factory on June 2nd. Tickets are on sale.

The show isn't the only upcoming Liturgy NYC date though, as they'll join White Ring & Terrence Hannum (Locrian) to play new bar/venue Saint Vitus (1120 Manhattan Avenue, Greenpoint) on May 6th.

"Finally, Greenpoint has a real fucking ROCK BAR!" declare the owners of Saint Vitus, the new 2,500 square foot bar, eatery and venue opening in Greenpoint next week. Owned by a group of guys who've been behind the bar at places like Bar Matchless, Lil Frankies and No. 7, Saint Vitus (named for a Black Sabbath song that is itself named for the nervous system disorder) was a social club, then a plumbing school in a past life...

"All three of us are musicians, so we designed this place to be a musician's dream," co-owner Justin Scurti tells us. "It's not too big, not too small, and we built it to our specifications for the best sound and stage set-up." Scurti says he plans to book everything from "good country music to black metal." -[Gothamist]

Scurti plays in Primitive Weapons, who will also play Saint Vitus on May 13th with Goes Cube, Descender and Iron Tides as part of a string of dates for Goes Cube.

In related news, Terrence Hannum of Locrian will be in NYC this weekend to play Europa tonight/Sunday (4/17) with Martial Canterel, Gnaw and Blacklist (tickets).

Locrian released one of my favorite LPs of 2010, and have released a new collaborative song with Horseback called "The Gift" which appears on a Utech sampler in celebration of the forthcoming Utech Festival on 6/11 in Milwaukee (where both bands will share a bill with Mamiffer, House of Low Culture, James Plotkin, and many other notables). "The Gift" will also appear on their forthcoming collaborative EP (!) New Dominions due on Utech. Locrian & Horseback also recently collaborated on a split 7" for Turgid Animal (disappearing fast!) and you can hear Horseback's contribution, "Oblivion Eaters" streaming below.

All tour dates, song streams, and a highly controversial video conducted with Liturgy is below.

Yob @ Emo's
YOB

After a monster show at Emo's featuring Kylesa, Trash Talk, and many esteemed others, the second of four BV-BBG Austin shows took place in the same venue on the next day (3/17) as part of Full Metal Texas. The BrooklynVegan/1000Knives (Emo's Inside) stage featured a rare appearance from YOB (their first in five+ years), and appearances from current hardcore greats Trap Them, alongside faves Hull, Kvelertak, The Funeral Pyre, All Pigs Must Die, and Goes Cube.

Meanwhile, the main stage at Full Metal Texas featured an appearance from Massachusetts faves The Red Chord, with last minute addition Motionless in White, Upon A Burning Body, Letlive, Elysion Fields, Better Left Unsaid, and the contest winner from Roadrunner Records SignMeTo, (congrats guys!) Head Crusher.

Killer and packed show from start to finish.

Despite having the least enviable of time slots, Goes Cube gave it their all and by the time they were half way through their set were playing to a 2/3s full room. The focus of their early day set was In Tides and Drifts, the band's new/forthcoming LP due on The End. Excellent set from this trio as usual, who also killed it at The Studio at Webster Hall at the start of their tour.

New Southern Lord signees/crusty d-beat supergroup All Pigs Must Die was a freight train of down-tuned riffs. The band conjured thoughts of Feral Ward bands while destroying the now mostly full room. Kevin of HopeCon's vocals are delivered with a furious energy that matches the intensity of APMD's killer riffage, and Ben Koller (Converge) behind the kit takes this already awesome band from impressive to explosive.

And speaking of combustibles, holy shit..... Kvelertak! The Norwegian triple-guitar attack is just plain jaw-dropping live, matching their party riffs/atmosphere with maniacal intensity. Tons of swinging guitars, and gang-style choruses to get the crowd pumped. And pumped they were, I heard quite a few singalongs, despite the language barrier (the band sings in Norwegian!).

Due to a family emergency, Rwake was forced to drop out a day before the show, but we quickly replaced them with The Funeral Pyre. It's hard to follow Kvelertak, but the LA black-metal band (sporting Early Graves guitarist Chris Brock) brought the party-vibe down and the bum-out to 11 with their blasting power. Catch them on tour now with The Secret (they play Union Pool on 3/27).

Triple guitar doomers Hull followed with a set that spoke to the old fans ("Viking Funeral") but leaned on newer material as well. The band's doomy thunder sounded amazing on the Emo's system and in speaking with members of the Emo's staff later in the week, I was told that Hull was their "favorite new discovery". Hull ruled, as usual. Catch them in NYC with Batillus, Horseback, and Caltrop on 3/26 at The Studio at Webster Hall (tickets).

After a bit of a lull, Trap Them's van rolled up just as their set time was supposed to start. After getting their gear on stage, the band played close to a full set opening with "Dead Digs with Digital Collars" (viewable below) and hitting points from the new LP Darker Handcraft like their lead single "The Facts". Killer set. My only regret is that I didn't get to see them twice.

And finally, the main event, YOB headlining the indoor stage while The Red Chord headlined the out. Kicking off with a new song (!), the mostly rhythmic, mostly open string track was short by YOB standards (7ish minutes?) but decimated the crowd on the fantastic Emo's system. By the time the band were a minute into their second track, "Burning The Altar", I knew that this was easily one of my highlights at SXSW. So. Fucking. Amazing.

I'd like to thank everyone at Full Metal Texas, Yeah Management, 1000 Knives, Branch Marketing Collective, Fireball Whisky, SignMeTo, Wacken Open Air, Bands On A Budget, Harpoon Brewery, March Is Metal Month, Evil Bong 3D, Sin Cal Industries, Metal Injection, Metal Insider, MetalSucks, Record Store Day and Put In Mouth. But most importantly, I'd like to thank the incredible bands, and everyone who took time out on a Thursday afternoon to RAGE at Emo's.

Goes Cube
Goes Cube

Goes Cube celebrated the release of their new LP Of Tides & Drifts and kicked off their campaign toward SXSW with a show at The Studio at Webster Hall last night (3/9). Support came from The Austerity Program, Rosetta, & Naam. Goes Cube's new material thundered through the venue and impressed live, while The Austerity Program's live show was empassioned and awesome despite their own opinion on the subject ("It was OK, I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5"). As usual, Rosetta knocked it out of the park with their delicious reverb-drenched space metal. Pictures from that show are in this post.

Goes Cube's trek SXSW calendar includes a set at Full Metal Texas on 3/17, where they'll play the BV/1000K stage alongside headliners YOB, Trap Them, Hull, Kvelertak (I hope), Rwake and All Pigs Must Die.

Goes Cube at Bell House (more by Keith Marlowe)
Goes Cube

As previously mentioned, Goes Cube will pop champagne with Rosetta, Naam, and The Austerity Program at The Studio at Webster Hall on March 9th (tickets) as part of the In Tides And Drifts LP release party (due March 29th via The End). The old cliche for heavy bands is that the new LP is always "heavier, and more hooky" than the last, but in the case of In Tides & Drifts this is definitely the truth. Check out one of more pummeling moments of early Mastodon-ian thunder in album opener "Safety Coffin", available for download above and streaming below.

We are also happy to report (technically for the 2nd time) that Goes Cube and Kvelertak have been added to the BrooklynVegan/1000Knives stage at Full Metal Texas at Emo's on 3/16, alongside such esteemed folk as Trap Them, All Pigs Must Die, Hull, Rwake, and more TBA. Meanwhile, the lineup on the main stage has blossomed as well, looking a bit like this: Better Left Unsaid, The Word Alive, Elysion Fields and Upon A Burning Body. More details and the flyer below.

The free Emo's show will be brought to you by the fine folks at Bands On A Budget, Dead Conflict Records, Evil Bong 3D, Harpoon Brewery, Sin Cal Industries, and Wacken Open Air in addition to March Is Metal Month, Metal Injection, Metal Insider, MetalSucks, Record Store Day and Put In Mouth.

Goes Cube at Bell House (more by Keith Marlowe)
Goes Cube

Goes Cube will celebrate their bruising new LP In Tides And Drifts (due March 29th via The End) in the best way possible, by inviting a crew of killers along for the ride! The NYC band will be joined by a Rosetta (who just blew the roof off Santos), Naam (who are touring with Orange Goblin), and The Austerity Program at The Studio at Webster Hall on March 9th (they're celebrating a little early). Tickets for their Record Release show are on sale.

The March 9th show is the first of a string of tour dates for the band on the way to SXSW, where they'll play a gang of shows including The End Records Official Showcase on March 17th at The Ale House with Hull (who also plays Full Metal Texas this year), Braveyoung, Novembers Doom, Daniel Lioneye, and Dead By April. All Goes Cube dates are below.

In other Rosetta news, the band recently started a Kickstarter project to help raise funds for a split with Junius.

Rosetta had a great tour last month with Kylesa, but upon returning home we were faced with $2000 worth of repair work on our van. We had studio time scheduled with Andrew Schneider, who recorded A Determinism of Morality, booked for early March. Faced with potentially having to cancel those sessions due to lack of funds, we've decided to give the Kickstarter model a try --- letting our friends and fans help us finance the recording and be a part of the project as it's created.
Look for that new recording soon, as the band has already raised $2600 towards their $900 goal!

All tour dates and some video is below.

The Giraffes, Goes Cube, and East Of The Wall played Bell House on June 17th as part of a last minute NYC farewell to Goes Cube (the guitarist Dave is moving out of the city). Keith missed EOTW, but got pictures of both Giraffes and Goes Cube (in this post).

The Giraffes recently dropped Show, a Live CD/DVD combo culled from a recent show at Union Pool. Pick up a copy.

The Giraffes on a Rocks Off Boat Cruise
The Giraffes

Goes Cube will play June 11th at the Bell House, possibly their final show in 2010:

As individuals, it's a major year for us, as well. This summer, Matt Tyson (bass) and his wife will welcome twins into the world. Meanwhile, David and his wife are moving out of New York City to an undisclosed location (even to them) somewhere out west.

Obviously, with such big plans (the next full length, the EP), this is not the end of Goes Cube. No way.... The soonest we will be conceivably playing again in NYC would be this fall (we've already been invited to play CMJ). However, depending on how things go, it may be longer than that. And consider this: the next time we DO play NYC, it will be as a touring band. After all, it's not worth David coming all the way back to NYC for one show.

So, it stands to reason we'd put together a really fun show to celebrate.... Joining us on the bill will be two bands who have become incredibly close friends of ours, influences on our music, and who we've shared the road with: The Giraffes and East Of The Wall.
Tickets are on sale - its a helluva triple bill.

Goes Cube recently released "Property" b/w "The Ban Has Been Lifted" 7" via The End Records. Want one? I have FIVE available for giveaway! Details on how to win are at the bottom of this post.

For those of you who can't make it to the Bell House, you will get a shot to catch East Of The Wall in NYC at The Studio At Webster Hall on July 30 with Black Cobra, Howl, and Struck by Lightning (tickets), and/or The Charleston when they play with Name on August 2nd.

Meanwhile, The Giraffes have been ragin' away, most recently on a Rocks Off Boat Cruise on June 3rd. Pics from the (absolute) mayhem are below...

East of The Wall, in full on crushing mode (by Samantha Marble)
East Of The Wall

East of The Wall and Goes Cube are finally home. The pair hit the road for SXSW shortly after their 3/5 show at Union Pool and have been skipping around the US ever since, with Goes Cube tagging The End's official showcase on 3/18 and East of The Wall playing a succession of shows including Goodbye South By at Red 7 on 3/21 (pics of both below). The bands are finally back on tri-state soil and will play a FREE in-store at Generation Records TODAY (3/30) at 6:30 with Descender.

East of The Wall's appearance at Goodbye South By on 3/21 at Red 7 was a jaw dropper. The NJ band play a smoking instrumental prog/hardcore hybrid that is technical with out feeling wanky. Think Pelican with the occaisional hardcore vocal and a little more tech, but with TONS of energy.

Goes Cube

Cable will celebrate the 10th anniversary and re-release of Northern Failures with a show at Union Pool on 4/16 with Translation Loss's Slacks and Goes Cube.

Northern Failures ...ranks as the overall fan favorite. The more jagged, angular sounds of the first two records were smoothed over and a more rock and riff oriented groove crept in. Yet it still remained distinctly Cable and decidedly heavy. It was also the start of their collaboration with producer Steve Austin [of Today Is The Day]. -[StonerRock]
Pre-order Cable's Northern Failures on vinyl via No World Order Records.

Goes Cube is also scheduled to play The Charleston TONIGHT (2/19) with Rosetta and East of The Wall. It's one of a number of shows for GC/EoTW. The pair will hit the road for a number of dates on their way to SxSW, including a tour kickoff on 3/5 with The Austerity Program at Union Pool. Upon their return, both bands will hit up Generation Records for an instore on March 30th. Full tour dates are below.

East of The Wall also has another NYC show this weekend with Descender, Surrounded By Teeth, and Beauty Apes at Lit Lounge on Monday (2/22). The band will release Ressentiment via Translation Loss this July; stream a pair of tracks from that record at their myspace.

Goes Cube have a new seven inch, "Property" b/w "The Ban Has Been Lifted" out very soon via The End Records. Snag yourself a copy, or try your luck at winning one of these limited edition hand-numbered joints for FREE. Details at the bottom of this post.

Goes Cube

Hull and Goes Cube will team up with Eyes of The Sun for a show in Brooklyn TONIGHT (1/8) at The Production Lounge in Greenpoint. Its one of of two shows on the calendar for Hull, as the band is scheduled to impact Ace of Clubs with Black Pyramid (originally profiled here), The Resurrection Sorrow, Archon, and Maegashira.

Goes Cube has another TWO shows on their calendar, as the band is scheduled to go acoustic (!) at Piano's with Nick Oliveri on 1/23 as well as team up with Rosetta, East of The Wall (formerly Biclops) and Restorations at The Charleston on 2/19. Rosetta will also be at Union Pool with Tombs, Battlefields, City of Ships on 1/22 as part of a BV sponsored show.

Nick (a rare shirt-ed moment)...
Nick Oliveri

Nick Oliveri, of Mondo Generator, The Dwarves, and former bass player for Queens Of The Stone Age and Kyuss, put out a collection of home-recorded songs, Death Acoustic (Impedance Records), in October '09. He's touring the US with that material (which includes covers of past projects Queens & Dwarves as well as Raw Power, GG Allin and more) this January and February. The acoustic tunes come to Pianos on Saturday, January 23rd, where he'll be joined by acoustic versions of heavy Brooklyn bands Goes Cube and Weird Owl. Tickets are on sale.

Sea of Bones
Sea of Bones

Sadly, due to the death of someone very dear in one of our families (and by extension, the Goes Cube family as a whole), Goes Cube will be unable to play our show with Cable and Liturgy on 12/3 at Fontanas...

We apologize for having to cancel and appreciate your understanding. We have some big news coming up, and we DO have another FREE show on 12/18 (at Spike Hill in Williamsburg with some other great bands). Please stay tuned, stay in touch, and be well. -David, Kenny, and Matt.
Best to you and your family, Goes Cube. Cable and Liturgy will still be a-rockin' TONIGHT (12/3) at Fontana's though, joined by the newly added Sea of Bones. The FREE show will feature some FREE suds as well, and will double as a party for the black metal documentary Until The Light Takes Us, which also just had a party at Knitting Factory, and which drops (into theaters) Friday (12/4).

Sea of Bones released The Harvest independently, as in by themselves... for free download, earlier this year. Check out that LP above. The band also recently played with Across Tundras, Monolith, and Bubonic Bear at Mill Creek Tavern in Philadelphia on 11/25 and Union Pool on 11/26 with Gwynbleidd as part of AT's previously discussed east coast tour. If you missed Gwynbleidd, catch them Fontana's on Sat (12/5) fri with B.I.T.E. and Rattling Cages.

Goes Cube outside Fontana's
Goes Cube

Goes Cube has scheduled a headlining show for TONIGHT (10/29) at Southpaw with Rumanian Buck, The Unawares, and Elyas Khan. The show is one of two that the band has scheduled in the next week, the second being with Outbreak, Hour Of The Wolf, Violent Bullshit, & Descender at Cake Shop on 11/3. More dates at the bottom of our pre-CMJ interview with the band.

Goes Cube was one of five bands that played the eclectic lineup at the BrooklynVegan Day Party on 10/23 at Fontana's (part of a full day which continued on at the same venue). From tribal psychedelic punk (Crystal Antlers) to full-on stoner riffery (Nebula, Naam) to post-hardcore thunder (Goes Cube) to the punky and spunky (Ume), the day was chock full of killer performances.

Ume started the day with their poppy and suprisingly heavy take on 90s post-punk that is both powerful and charming. Outside of her devilish coo, Lauren is an enigmatic guitarist; all flailing hair, swinging arms, and wild movements. If this band didn't have such catchy songs, you'd probably be content just watching.

Goes Cube was next on the bill, and as semi-old hands in the NYC scene, it's to be expected that this band delivered a heavy and passionate performance. Kudos to Goes Cube, and make sure and get out to see the local boys soon at one of their many upcoming dates.

Naam followed, balancing stoner riffery, psychedelia, and punishing power- there's a reason why they get attached to so many great bills in our city. Nebula headlined the day, playing their take on cali- psych with a new drummer Adam Kriney (La Otracina) in tow following the recent departure of Rob Oswald back to Karma To Burn. If you dig bluesy psychedelia delivered with power, Naam and Nebula are both for you.

Crystal Antlers are veterans of our Day Show, so we knew that catchy songs and punk bombast would be as great as ever. The show of one of THREE that day for Crystal Antlers, so our heartfelt thanks goes out to this hardworking band.

Goes Cube (Kenny, David, Matt)
Goes Cube

Goes Cube, are, to quote El-P circa Company Flow, "independent as fuck". Self-funded, self-booked, and self-taught, Goes Cube released their first LP, Another Day Has Passed via The End earlier this year after a string of three self-released EPs. Much like the rave reviews suggest, Goes Cube have delivered an excellent record that touches on post-hardcore and metal all while holding true to melody.

On the heels on that killer LP, we invited Goes Cube to play the Brooklyn Vegan Day Party at Fontana's on 10/23, and decided to throw a couple questions their way. The results...

====

Goes Cube is an NYC band, so I'm sure you have seen your share of great performances during CMJ. Any favorite CMJ memories?

David Obuchowski: The first year we were formally part of CMJ was 2006. That year, I set up a number of day parties, one of which was Goes Cube, Foreign Islands, Read Yellow, and Jake Brennan. Shout Out Out Out was supposed to play but they literally couldn't fit their gear down in the venue (Julep). Fun show, and it was a great opportunity for us to play with much bigger bands. The lesson learned is that bands of all sizes want to play a lot of shows during CMJ and SXSW. Book it yourself. Things are way different from when we were teenagers, but that aspect has never changed.

Kenny Appell: Hull in '07

Crystal Antlers

We're happy to welcome Crystal Antlers to the lineup of the free BrooklynVegan day show at Fontana's on 10/23! This will be the second year in a row the LBC band played a BrooklynVegan day party during CMJ, and this completes our Friday day show lineup, which looks like this:

* Nebula
* Crystal Antlers
* Naam
* Goes Cube
* Ume
Set times TBA, flyer below, and for those keeping score at home, that's FIVE bands playing a FREE show with FREE Miller beer (and Vitamin Water) (while it lasts)! No-brainer?

Stick around after the show because the BV-BBG/Relapse Records showcase happens at the same venue 30 minutes later.

Crystal Antlers are currently touring (their asses) off in support of Tentacles, their LP from Touch n Go that dropped earlier this year. The band has dates scheduled through the end of the year and are playing quite a few CMJ shows in the coming days including a late night Vice Party with Cold Cave. And these shows are in addition to their upcoming dates with The Big Pink which include shows at Bowery Ballroom (12/3, tix) and Music Hall of Williamsburg (12/4, tix).

Trap Them

Besides the killer Coalesce show at Europa, and the upcoming Shrinebuilder @ Le Poisson Rouge, you can mark you calendar with ANOTHER important day before the year is up.

RelapseI am proud to announce my FIRST OFFICIAL CMJ SHOWCASE (BrooklynVegan - BBG) which we are co-presenting with the good folks at Relapse Records. It's scheduled to go down on Friday October 23rd as part of an all day extravaganza at Fontana's on the Lower East Side!

CMJThe "official" part of the party kicks off at 7:30pm. That's the part of the night that costs money and will be listed in the CMJ guide (and is open to a limited number of CMJ badgeholders for free). Earlier in the day we'll be hosting the "unofficial" part, a 100% free day party at the same venue.

The shows will feature guitar cabinets courtesy of our good friends at Main Drag Music, stiff drinks by Hornitos, as well as FREE Miller Lite and High Life and Vitamin Water while supplies last! (more sponsors TBA if we get them)

The daytime lineup (one of three BrooklynVegan day parties during CMJ this year) will be announced in full soon, but will focus on the heavy side of things (and is partly revealed below). The official show lineup (one of two BrooklynVegan official showcases this year) has a little bit of everything for the heavy music fan: thundering political deathgrind, rumbling doom, crusty grindcore, and even thrashy-ska performed by a man with a prosthetic leg! It goes like this....

As storm clouds form overhead take comfort in the fact that on East 11th Street TONIGHT (9/26), they'll be a-rockin' as the great Goes Cube will team up with rowdy punks The Giraffes and The Midnight Show at The Studio @ Webster Hall.

Goes Cube are still basking in the glory of their massive LP Another Day Has Passed, which is out NOW via The End Records. Asphyx

Thanks all who came out Sunday night to Public Assembly. Full recap and pics coming soon HERE. In the meantime, pics from Friday's Repulsion show are HERE.

Asphyx's Death... The Brutal Way is due out in the US on August 18th, but it's shipping NOW at the Ibex Moon site. It's a sickening death/doom trip that's part down-tuned riff fest, part beastly conjuring, but 100% heavy heavy heavy. Recommended for fans of old school death metal, Entombed, Dismember, Autopsy, and the like. Check out one of the tracks, "Scorbutics", available for download above.

Gods & Queens currently have a new split 7" on the way via Hawthorne Street with the mighty Medusa, and have taken the time to drop off a killer cover of the Quicksand classic, "Head To Wall"! Download that above.

Weedeater have announced that Steve Albini will record their new album, which will be available in Spring 2010.

Swallow Your Teeth is the end of a long road for Richmond's The Catalyst, as the band has dropped multiple releases over their seven year history but THIS is their first LP! The noise-core merchants are currently streaming their Swallow Your Teeth at Scene Point Blank, but you can download the sick opening track, "I Hate The Future", above! The Catalyst have a few shows in the very near future, including The Glass Door on August 14th and a TBA show lined up for Aug 15th in Manhattan. Full tour dates are below. Pick up a copy of Swallow Your Teeth here.

Attention hardcore fans! Lambgoat is reporting that the legendary Disembodied will release Psalms of Sheol on Prime Directive in August, comprised of thirteen tracks of rare and unreleased material that includes the Existence In Suicide MCD and the Confession 7". Disembodied has reunited and sporadically played shows recently.

BaronessBaroness has a new album on the way, which we knew, but we now can attach a name to that effort Blue Record! The LP was recorded in Dallas, Texas with producer/engineer John Congleton (Explosions In The Sky, Black Mountain) and will hit the racks in October. Meanwhile, dig on the cover art (to the left) and the tracklisting below!

First of all, The Endless Blockade would like it be known that they "have not broken up". As a matter of fact, they finally released their split with Agoraphobic Nosebleed and have a split with The Bastard Noise out soon (stream the new BN track here). The boys in TEB "just figured another band would give us even less time in our lives to do anything else". That new band? Slaughter Strike.

Candlelight records has signed the mighty midwestern band The Atlas Moth, whose new album A Glorified Piece of Blue Sky will be released on Oct 6th. The band dropped their massive EP, Pray for Tide, on Witch Trial last year.

Planks have reissued their 2008 split with Tombs as the "European edition" featuring artwork by Mike Wohlberg. If you never got a hold of the Black Box Recordings version, it is highly recommended. Pick that up through the either of the bands on tour. Meanwhile, Planks recently made their massive S/T LP (where these two songs came from) available for free download! Pick that up above. Mike Hill of Tombs has posted all of the lyrics from the massive Winter Hours via his blog.

Crucial Blast is set to release Overmars's 2008 LP Born Again. The LP combines electronics, ambient soundscapes, Swans industrial dirge, and the thunder of Neurosis to create a different and powerful take on post-metal. The band is scheduled to hit the US with the mighty Battlefields, logging a pair of dates in NYC: Europa on August 16th and September 3rd at The Charleston. This will destroy.

Mastodon, High On Fire, Converge, and Dethklok announced dates (and a presale).

The premiere of the NEW Goes Cube video for "Saab Sonnet", more news on Black Sun, Absu, Trap Them, Kylesa, Anaal Nathrakh, and Darkthrone as This Week In Metal continues.....

Minsk

Lots of ground to cover, since we missed ya last week, so lets get right to it with the mighty Minsk! The Chicagoan's new album With Echoes In The Movement Of Stone is out now, and it definitely delivers on the promises of The Ritual Fires of Abandonment. Highly recommended, as evidenced by the monstrosity "Three Moons" available for download above!

At The Charleston on 5/29, I managed to catch the pummeling Magrudergrind along with the equally awesome powerviolence of The Endless Blockade. The pair are touring surrounding their MDF appearance, and while TEB doesn't have a new album out, Magrudergrind DOES; a self-titled LP available now via Willowtip! Cop that here, and cop a pair of songs from the record above!

Also up at Willowtip, the new LPs by Defeatist and Afgrund! The new Defeatist LP, Sharp Blade Sinks Deep Into Dull Minds, is actually a compilation of previous EPs and other releases, but definitely provides a good preview as to what these grinders are about before their new LP drops (soon). Meanwhile Afgrund's new LP, Vid Helvetets Grindar, is also on preorder. Check out the band's deathgrind-y groove on tracks like "Klinisk Digital Kyla", "Borja Fran Noll", both downloadable above.

Check out two noteworthy streams... Khanate's Clean Hands Go Foul and Xasthur's All Reflections Drained. Both albums are out NOW via Hydra Head Records. In the meantime, check out an awesome interview with James Plotkin of Khanate and make sure and buy that Khanate hunting knife too!

Goes Cube are finally home from their tour promoting the massive Another Day Has Passed. Their "homecoming show" is scheduled for tonight (6/5) at Union Hall with The Detachment Kit amd The Thin Man. Tickets are still available.

Ancestors have completed recording their follow-up to last year's Neptune With Fire. Featuring four songs, and three interludes, I had a chance to preview a few tracks which are definitely as epic as their previous material, and just as compelling. Look for Sera Timms from Black Math Horseman and David Scott Stone to make an apperance on the as-yet untitled LP, and look for more news very soon!

A member of Pelican and a member of Tombs have agreed to a "bro tat" commemorating their current tour together. So what you say? YOU can decide what it is! Pictures from their recent show together at Irving Plaza are HERE in case you missed them.

Iron Age and Sex Vid are in town this weekend. More info, dates, and an MP3 from Iron Age's Tee Pee Records debut, HERE.

Liturgy have been added to our Northside Festival showcase. Howl have been added to the roster of Relapse Records, and we just got word that so were Black Anvil!

Black Pyramid has released their new self-titled LP on the doom stable Meteor City Records. While vocalist Andy Beresky comes off sounding like J.D. Cronise at times (NOT a bad thing), these Massachusetts boys definitely are in a whole different category than The Sword. With an ability to balance their bombastic blues riffs with stylistic touches of the greats (ie Electric Wizard, Sleep, Pentagram, etc) without sounding derivative, check out a video for Black Pyramid's "And The Gods Made War/Visions of Gehenna" below and download "Visions of Gehenna" above! Full BP tour dates are below, including their appearance at the Stoner Hands Of Doom Festival.

That video and Thou, Indian, Ulver, Brutal Truth, Wolves In The Throne Room, Municipal Waste, and Narrows as This Week In Metal Continues...

Orcustus
Orcustus

Orcustus, a vile and caustic black metal crew that at one point featured Infernus and Tormentor of Gorogoroth, have released their long-time-coming LP via Southern Lord. Try and choke back the vomit while you check out "Asphyxiokenisis" above, and pick up the LP here.

While we're on the BM tip, a misanthrope who released my second favorite record of last year, Leviathan, has dropped a new split entitled Sic luceat lux with Greek black metallers Acherontas. Pick it up at Zyklon-B Productions.

Converge is currently in the studio recording their new album, fingers perched with on twitter. Meanwhile, Nate of Converge dropped some details on the new Doomriders record, Darkness Come Alive, which he professes to be "not as [much of a] party record" and a "little more serious". More in an interview here.

Speaking of Doomriders, Boston's Disappearer (also featuring Jebb Riley) have released The Clearing on Magic Bullet Records in CD and 2LP formats. Pick it up here, and dig on the MP3 for "A Skull Full Of Bats" above!

20 Buck Spin is repressing one of their greatest releases, the Graves At Sea / Asunder split. Pick that up here.

Red Sparowes have announced that they will hit the studio in August to record their LP follow-up to Amorphisms EP. Follow Red Sparowes on Twitter.

UK doomers Moss have a new 10" EP, Tombs Of The Blind Drugged, due this month via Rise Above Records. Preorder info isn't available yet, but when it is, you can pick it up here.

Black Arrows of Filth & Impurity. I know, the name is kind of a mouthful... but the names of the bands that are associated with this death/grind/ambient crew are pretty common around these parts: Demiricous, The Dream Is Dead, and Racebannon. BAOFAI drop their new album 1984 (Eternal) on Gilead Media and are streaming four tracks at their myspace, but have dropped off "Damn, Girlfriend, That Napalm Exfoliates As It Burns" and "If Shit Were Gold, The Poor Wouldn't Have Assholes" above! Pick up 1984 (Eternal) here.

Call me a loyalist, but I had the feeling that after being somewhat disappointed by In The Absence Of Truth, Isis would come back as strong as ever. Make sure and check out Wavering Radiant on May 5th or now, if you are a record fiend or feel like streaming it all at their myspace. Look for Isis at Irving Plaza on June 2nd with Tombs & Pelican (tickets here), and check out the video for "Holy Tears" below!

That video, Subrig Destroyer, Beherit, Velvet Cacoon, sunn 0))), Nattefrost, and more, as This Week in Metal continues!

Goes Cube

In cooking, it's called a reduction. If you filled a pot with post-hardcore from the 90s and simmered it down to the essence, that culinary delight might be Goes Cube. They cherry-pick the best moments from Quicksand, Helmet, and Jawbox, and deliver it with a thunder that would make an Orange amp technician proud. Don't take my word for it though, check out "The Only Daughter" from their debut LP Another Day Has Passed available for download above.

The new album is preparing for blast off via The End Records on May 12th. Produced by Dean Baltulonis (The Hold Steady, Sick Of It All, Most Precious Blood, others), the LP marks their fourth release over all, counting their now-sold-out EPs Beckon The Dagger God, Not What We Thought, and Hutchinson.

Goes Cube wrecked Hardcore Night this past Saturday (April 11th), and just two days after Another Day Has Passed hits store/digital shelves (May 14th), they will play a record release show at the Studio @ Webster Hall with Jones Street Station, The Austerity Program, Constants, and Red Beard. Ticket info is forthcoming, but they only cost a measly $8!

The Austerity Program are currently working on some new material and recently played Europa with Young Widows.

All Goes Cube dates below....

Kill the Client
Kill The Client

Let's kick this thing off the RIGHT way, an absolutely BRUTAL grind record out NOW on Willowtip.... no, not the new Phobia (though that is good, and out NOW) or the new Maruta (also out NOW)... it's Cleptocracy by unstoppable force known as Kill The Client! Blazing through eighteen tracks of searing grindcore, Cleptocracy is both destructive and engaging.... Check out "Cleptocracy and "Divide And Conquer" downloadable above!

* The above Deathwish sampler features songs by Trap Them, Blacklisted, Cold World, Narrows, 108, United Nations, The Hope Conspiracy, Victims, Rot In Hell and many others.

Graf Orlock have announced details of their upcoming cinemagrind monstrosity, Destination Time Today, along with a new track streaming at their myspace! Look for the record to land on Level Plane (Date TBD) possibly around the time that Graf Orlock hits the East Coast for a tour that is (not fully) scheduled for Jan 2009! Check out the basic itinerary below, and hold tight for details to come.

Mastodon have anounced details for Crack The Skye, their upcoming album due in 2009! As discussed, Brendan O'Brien will be on the boards for the seven track (listing below), fifty minute opus which was was recorded at Southern Tracks Studios in Atlanta. Meanwhile, the band has announced a handful of European dates with Metallica (find 'em below).

PlanksThe sickening crusty hardcore of Planks are one my my latest obsessions, and their limited 12" (500 copies) is out NOW on Narshardaa. Pick it up here and check out "Deluge" from that LP, which the band has made available for download above and scoot on over to Aversionline, who has a second track for download! Also out now on Black Box, a split LP that Planks rocked with Tombs... a taste of which is above in the form of "A Sunken City". Speaking of Tombs, the band permenantly added Andrew Hernandez (ex-ASRA badass) on drums, and I must say that he absolutely KILLED it when I saw them lay waste to the Relapse showcase during CMJ.

Black Elk's Always A Six Never A Nine is available NOW over at Crucial Blast. Check out THREE songs from the record available for download above!

Cattle Decapitation have posted a new song from and announced a date for (Jan 20th, 2009- INAUGURATION DAY!) their new album, The Harvest Floor! Produced by Billy Anderson, The Harvest Floor will include contributions by Ross Sewage (Impaled/Ludicra), Dino Sommese (Dystopia/Asunder), Jarboe (Swans), Jackie Perez Gratz (Grayceon/Amber Asylum), and John Wiese. Check out the album cover below....
