Happy Holidays! I take on more than I can handle. That results in a lot of unposted content. In the name of catching up, while also taking it easy during this final week of the year, here's some of that lost material.
Pictures and the setlist from Gorilla Biscuits' set at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, continued below...

The Walter Schreifels Band, led by Walter Schreifels of Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits Civ, Rival Schools, and Youth of Today fame, performed at the BrooklynVegan CMJ showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 20th (with Fanfarlo, Laura Marling, The Antlers, Think About Life, and The Wheel.) Since then, the band (which also features Dave Hill on guitar and Arthur Smilios of GB/Civ on bass) played another show in Austin. They were actually on the same bill as Voxtrot at the Mohawk on Saturday night. It was a Fun Fun Fun Fest afterparty and Walter and Arthur were already in town because Gorilla Biscuits played the fest proper (those pics coming soon).
Walter's next show will take place this Saturday night, 11/14, at the Court Tavern in New Brunswick, NJ. Also on the bill are Atlantic/Pacific (Garrett from Texas Is The Reason), Dave Walsh (The Loved Ones), and Tom Dunphy. Walter is also making an appearance at Lolita Bar in NYC on Wednesday, 11/18, but at that...
"I'll be reading with this Italian translator reading some choice Italian pop songs in translation, A banjo playing double decker bus tour guide and the beautiful banshee Kamara Thomas from Earl Greyhound."He also has two shows coming up in California. All dates, the NJ flyer, with more pictures, video, and the setlist from CMJ, below...
Walter Schreifels @ Knitting Factory - BV-CMJ 2008 (more by Zach Dilgard)
Last CMJ, Rival Schools played their first public NYC reunion show at Knitting Factory. It was part of a day-long and free BrooklynVegan party. Right before that happened we interviewed Rival Schools members Walter Schreifels and Sammy Siegler, but only ever posted half of it ("part 1"). As sometimes happens around here, time went on, and the interview got older and older... and then I remembered we had it today. What reminded me was the show that the new Walter Schreifels Band will be playing at Music Hall of Williamsburg this evening (@7:30pm). What better time then to finally post the never-before-seen conclusion? (not to mention it's as relevant now as it was last year) (and better late than never?).
Rival Schools have now been back together for over a year, and though they promised a new album, so far it looks like the newest one will be a solo LP coming out by Walter himself (video preview at the end of the post). He'll play some of those new songs, along with lots of classics, at Music Hall tonight (right after an opening set by Think About Life).

August 25th, 2009 (Austin, TX) - Transmission Entertainment is pleased to announce the lineup for the 2009 Fun Fun Fun Fest, taking place on November 7th and 8th at Waterloo Park in Austin. What started out as a show for a few touring acts and local favorites has become a movement -- a festival that fans and bands alike realize needs to be experienced year after year.Greatest. Festival. Ever...
Now in its fourth year, Fun Fun Fun Fest has made a significant impact on the country's winter calendar, successfully combining the vast worlds of indie, punk, rap, electronica and comedy while showcasing some of the city's most unique local businesses.

Post-hardcore/emo-y NYCers, Errortype:11 will play a reunion show at Mercury Lounge on August 8th with Joshua English (ex. Six Going On Seven), and I Hate Our Freedom. Tickets are on sale. Pilot To Gunner was also originally scheduled to play the show, but has cancelled.
"Errortype: Eleven was formed in 1998 shortly after the demise of World's Fastest Car, the Walter Schreifels-led band [Arthur Shepherd, Guitar] had joined the year before. Over the years, band members included Phil Hanratty, Adam Marino (Saetia), Scott Martin, Erik Matheu, Keith Moore, Sammy Siegler (CIV, Gorilla Biscuits, many others), and Ty Krek. ET11 released their S/T debut as well as their follow-up, Amplified to Rock, on Schriefels's imprint Some Records, with the The Crank EP appearing on (you guessed it) Crank in 1999. The band toured the US and UK and eventually split in 2002 when Phil Hhanratty left the band. The remaining members went on to form Instruction with Tom Capone (Quicksand)Walter Schreifels has a few shows of his own coming up: one "solo" show going down on June 17th at The Studio @ Webster Hall (tickets now on sale), and a short tour in Rival Schools with Eagles Of Death Metal including Webster Hall on August 6th (tickets here).
Walter Schreifels with Rival Schools at Irving Plaza (more by Tim Griffin)
Walter Schreifels in concert doesn't just mean it will be the hardcore veteran playing his Martin acoustic. For a few dates (so far), Walter Schriefels (the band) will play shows in the northeast, including one on June 17th in NYC at The Studio @ Webster Hall. Ticket info is forthcoming. Expect a mix of "everything" (Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits, covers...), except Rival Schools since they are currently active. The band is:
vocals & guitar: Walter SchreifelsIf you've ever seen comedian Dave Hill play guitar, you know he can shred (usually) in addition to telling jokes. He knows his shredders too. Catch his band Valley Lodge as "the house band for Triumph the Insult Comic Dog Presents Bonnapoo 2009" in the Bonnaroo comedy tent. Catch Dave's hilarious live comedy show, The Dave Hill Explosion, next at UCB in NYC on May 21st with special guests Takka Takka and Ira Glass.

"So yeah, I draw the line at Quicksand". - Walter
Walter Schreifels. Sam Siegler. Two names of a very select few who defined a sound and a movement in the late 80s and early 90s, New York Hardcore. Building upon the zen-like teachings of prophets with names like HR, MacKaye, and Raybeez, Walter Schreifels and Sammy Siegler cut their teeth in the blooming NYC scene with the legendary Gorilla Biscuits, Youth Of Today, and Judge, as well as Side By Side, and Project X.
Quicksand and CIV, as well as MTV support, multiple LPs and music videos followed, culminating in the reunion of the two Youth of Today bandmates in Rival Schools. Sam and Walter formed the band in 1999, with their lone LP United By Fate coming in 2001. The band split the following year, scrapping existing recordings that were believed to be the basis of the new album. Six years passed, and Walking Concert, Nightmare of You, Head Automatica, and solo work followed until early 2008, when Rival Schools announced their reformation. The announcement was followed by festival dates in Europe, ultimately leading to a handful of US shows.
Which leads us to NYC... The band have lined up a pair of shows at Maxwells and Mercury Lounge in early November which sold out quickly, but the band have also agreed to headline the free BrooklynVegan day party at Knitting Factory on Oct 25th! In part one of their first joint interview ever, we poked and prodded Sammy and Walter about their past & present projects, the old days, and blow-up dolls...

Guided By Voices' Doug Gillard filled in as Dave Hill's "Paul Schaefer" at last night's 'Explosion' at the UCB Theater in NYC (Oct 16). Phil Costello who usually plays the part was off playing with his heavy metal Bee Gees tribute band Tragedy. Trivia time: Dave Hill (comedian AND musician) and Doug Gillard both played in the Ohio band Cobra Verde, but at different times. At last night's show, Doug and Dave played part of "Jessica" by the Allman Brothers (at the same time).
Moby, complete with "cock saddle" moustache, was the first to join Dave and Doug on the stage. They chatted and then Moby played a version of "Dust in the Wind". Next up was Walter Schreifels of Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand and Rival Schools fame (P.S. Rival Schools are playing the BrooklynVegan party at Knitting Factory on October 25th). Walter spoke to Dave, Doug, and Moby. They all talked to each other and Walter played "Cats and Dogs" by Gorilla Biscuits.
There was a Chihuahua (which oddly wasn't the only dog in the room) (no cats though).

Liskfest, aka the festival in Cali that Gorilla Biscuits was reuniting for, has been cancelled due to "poor ticket sales". Rival Schools were supposed to play the fest too. Check out a new/unreleased track streaming at their myspace...
"Sweet" was on the vinyl version of United By Fate. I'm not sure now why it didn't make the album because I really like it now (hindsight!). It's very poppy and has a New Order-ish feel that is only hinted at on the rest of the record. The lyrics are about hidden relationships, there's a lot of them, lyrics I mean. Anyhoo, while we're getting our new stuff together and gearing up for our US shows thought this might be interesting for the page. Both NYC-area Rival Schools shows are now sold out. Updated tour dates below...

The reunited Rival Schools
Rival Schools have reunited, this much we knew. But now, the band is announcing that they will work on a follow-up to United By Fate and plan to play "a few choice autumnal shows". The only announced US show so far is Lisk Fest in Irvine, CA (tickets here). This fest which will see Walter working double time because Gorilla Biscuits are also playing that show. To quote the band, "our stokeage level is high".

Walter Schriefels' short-lived post-Quicksand project, Rival Schools, have reunited to record some new tunes and lined up a seven date tour of the UK leading up to an appearance at the Hove Festival in Norway. Here's Walter from an interview posted @ RockSound:
"We have got this June tour and we still want to play some shows in the States. Especially if we are writing new songs it would be good to live in them a little onstage before we come to record anything. Whether the album is out first part of the year or spring we are not yet sure but we want to play out with new material to test it all out so expect a few more dates to be announced."Awesome..... US dates are comin'! Full tour dates, most history and videos below.....
GB/CIV @ CBGB (more)
I almost forgot to mention that that the special guests at the Black and Blue Ball happening at Studio B in Brooklyn this weekend are/were supposed to be CIV and Gorilla Biscuits.....which is probably a good thing becuse when I first saw it, tt was 100% confirmed in a Black n Blue Productions MySpace blog post, but that has since been deleted and Punk News is now reporting that Gorilla Biscuits are probably NOT playing. It is suspicious that the Black n Blue Ball still has Gorilla Biscuits listed as one of their top friends though. Either way, tix at the door (and Agnostic Front)
