DJ Spinna and Q-Tip @ Nokia Theatre

"On Saturday, August 29th, what would have been Michael Jackson's 51st birthday, fans of the King of Pop gathered at New York City's NOKIA Theatre Times Square for Q-Tip Presents: "Long Live the King! A Birthday Celebration for Michael Jackson." The sold-out crowd danced the night away to never-before-heard remixes of Michael Jackson's hits, as well as rare video footage from the Motown and Sony vaults. Joining Q-Tip onstage to DJ were special guests DJ Spinna and Mark Ronson. At one point, Quincy Jones called in to say a few words to the audience. Other celebrities in attendance included Solange Knowles, Marsha Ambrosius, Grandmaster Flash, DJ Premier and Anthony Anderson."A similar party happened earlier the same day in Prospect Park where DJ Spinna also provided music and Grandmaster Flash was also in attendance. Solange has a busy weekend - on Sunday she was checking out Grizzly Bear at the Williamsburg Waterfront. More pictures from Nokia Theatre below...
Ramesh solo @ The Syrup Room in 2006 (more by Bao Nguyen)

French house legend, Alan Braxe, is probably best known for the single "The Music Sounds Better With You" which he produced under the name 'Stardust' with Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk and Benjamin Diamond......That message comes from party promoter GBH. The whole night - Alan Braxe to Lifelike to Grandmaster Flash to Ramesh, is $10. Ramesh also sent out the following message...Lifelike on the other hand you will know from his classic track "Discopolis" with Kris Menace... but that's just the tip of the iceberg... he has produced and remixed more great tunes than you can wag a stick at. Alan and Lifelike will be playing in the main room [of Webster Hall], with Justin Miller (DFA Records), Jacques Renault a.k.a. Runaway (DFA Records), Alex English & Daisy O'Dell
In the Marlin Room [of Webster Hall], Grandmaster Flash and Dimitry!!! will be holding it down...
Downstairs in the Studio, we are very happy to announce that we will be joined by the lovely DJ Jess and DJ Alex Malfunction of the Trash! par ties... and there will be an early live performance by Ramesh of Voxtrot!!!

Fake Blood is not Soulwax

I took two nights off after my early start Wednesday night, leaving me eager to hit the B Saturday night for a party that featured a nice mix of deejays that were both familiar and new (to me). I arrived in time to catch the tail end of Van Scott's set which featured a dancey Lykke Li remix, a super-voded mix of Little Boots' "Meddle" (which I later found out was by Treasure Fingers), and lots of other recent tracks.
Franki Chan followed with an excellent mix of some tracks I didn't recognize along with some new favorites including Whomadewho's "TV Friend" (one of the remixes that just came out at the end of last month) and a lovely hybrid version of the Soulwax remix of the Chemical Brothers' "Hey Boy, Hey Girl" that featured the original "super star deejays" vocal sample instead of "2manydj's" but as far as I could tell, retained all the instrumental parts from the Soulwax remix.
Princess Superstar took the evening in a highly dancey meets retro direction, dropping some current stuff mixed with some updated, oldie but goodie classic 90's tracks. Her set segued into Larry Tee's with the pair performing a live version of their hit "Licky" that's had dancefloors freaking out since last winter. Larry's set had everyone getting down and remembering what an innovator the pioneer of electroclash was and continues to be.
The night ended with a bang that unfortunately, hardly anyone was left to see: Nadastrom absolutely killed it. I'm not sure what specifically was great about their set ...it might have been the song selection, excellent mixing, just the right amount of wobbly bass...but one of the most satisfying elements of their set was the enthusiasm the pair maintained as the not too big to begin with, Studio B crowd dwindled down to a few handfuls of people:

A laptop, a vinyl record & DJ GRANDMASTER FLASH

GRANDMASTER FLASH & audience

Even Grandmater Flash, the "first dj to play the turntables as a musical instrument", uses a laptop now. That said, he was the only DJ at Webster Hall on Friday night that ALSO had a crate of records with him. He played the usual hip hop favorites and the occasional rock hit by bands like The White Stripes and Nirvana. When not mixing, he could often be found at the front of the stage hyping up the crowd and his long career that includes an induction into into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. More pictures below....
