Slava/Salva
SlavaSalva

We recently profiled Brooklyn producer Slava and mentioned his upcoming NYC shows, which include Warm Up at MoMA PS1 on July 28 and a BPM152 party at Tammany Hall on August 11. But if you'd like to catch Slava even sooner than that, head to Big Snow on Saturday (7/14) where he'll play as part of the ongoing Alan Watts residency with Y.O.U. and Comadrone. That residency also continues on July 19 with Grasshopper, Warcries, Kel Valhaal, and Future Shuttle.

Hopefully we'll stop confusing them one day, but until then I find it worth mentioning that the similarly named Salva plays a NYC show at Glasslands on September 14. Tickets for that show are on sale now. It's a late show which happens after Maria Minerva plays the venue earlier that night.

Lists of dates and song streams from both producers are below...

Instruments like this will be played tonight
modular synth

Happy summer solstice! And what a way to kick off the season, it looks like it's going to be well into the 90°s today. Death by Audio will be celebrating it tonight (6/20) with Modular Solstice, a night of all modular synth performances by musicians who are or were involved in a project which uses analog electronics. (Let's hope for the instruments' sake DbA's A/C is up and running.) The lineup for tonight's show includes Drew McDowall (CSD, ex-Coil and Psychic TV), Mark Dwinell (member of Forma), Matthew Regula (member of Telecult Powers), Nathan Cearley (member of Long Distance Poison), and Jesse Derosa (member of Grasshopper). Doors for tonight's show are at 8 PM, first set at 8:30. Admission is $7.

Drew McDowall spoke to WFMU about what he's been up to and they touched on the DbA show, in addition to some other future plans:

You're playing the Modular Solstice Synthesizer show on Wednesday at Death By Audio in Brooklyn, what can you tell me about the instrument you will be playing? Lots of gear fetishists want to know, I'm sure.

As this is the first solo show that I've done I wanted to to make it even more exposed and solitary so it's going to be modular synthesizer. No other instruments. You'll have to come to see what it is.

What's next?

Putting the finishing touches to the next Compound Eye and CSD records. I've started collaborating with a few other people and doing remixes too. I'm doing something with Nicky Mao from Hiro Kone, i'm excited about that.

You can check out some videos of Captain Sons and Daughters (CSD) from their St. Mark's Church show in 2008 below.

Each artist performing at Death by Audio tonight has offered a one to two sentence description of their set. A couple of them actually sounds like it's about the music, but they're all pretty fun to read. Check them out below.

Sam Mickens w/ Zac Pennington at Ecstatic Music Festival (more by David Andrako)
Sam Mickens

Late last year, Sam Mickens announced a split 7" with Voice on Tape due out "winter 2011/2012." That 7" still hasn't been released but you can stream Sam's contribution HERE. However, he did release a single last week, "One Final Round"/"To Victory or Death," which you can stream and purchase at his bandcamp. The songs have a traditional ballroom pop feel led by organic pianos and horns, until halfway through "To Victory or Death," when the band kicks it up into a double time punk beat.

Sam Mickens, who performed Saturday night as part of the Ecstatic Music Festival, has a few more upcoming NYC shows this month. He'll premiere his "Micropatronage" piece with a string quartet at Roulette on February 16 with Jim Staley and Zeena Parkins and Loren Mazzance Connors (whose new album, A Fire, was scheduled to come out this week but has since been delayed). Tickets are on sale now. Sam will then play the same venue on Feburary 18 when he hosts a live taping of ESP TV, which is also part of Roulette's Experimental Love Festival along with C. Spencer Yeh, Little Women, Grasshopper, MV Carbon, and Amanda Long. The event was curated by Scott Kiernan and Victoria Keddie. Tickets are on sale now.

Sam Mickens will also celebrate his 30th birthday at Shea Stadium on February 23 with performances by Sam Mickens Ecstatic Showband & Revue (who recorded the new 12") and Sam Mickens Fourth World (feat. members of Deerhoof, Extra Life, and Cuddle Magic). The bill also includes White Ring and Mirror Mirror.

White Ring last played in NYC last month at Glasslands (1/21) opening for oOoOO (who just announced an EP). How was that show?

Speaking of oOoOO's EP, Our Living is Killing Us (due April 10 via Tri Angle), Stereogum recently premiered the first track, "NoWayBack," which features vocals from collaborator Butterclock. Her airy vocals and oOoOO's beatwork bring to mind some of Grimes' downtempo material and its easily oOoOO's best track yet. Grab an MP3 of the song above and stream it below.

Devendra Banhart at Webster Hall (more by Vincent Cornelli)
Devendra Banhart

Devendra Banhart and the Grogs will team up with Adam Green at Terminal Five THURSDAY (8/19, tickets) and we have a pair of tickets available for giveaway. Details on how to win are below.

Devendra doesn't have an album on the way, but is involved in the release of the highly anticipated (and recently leaked) new Swans LP My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky. The LP, due on September 27 via Gira's Young God Records, sees Banhart contributing vocals to old label honcho, alongside Bill Rieflin, Grasshopper (Mercury Rev), and Gira's 3 1/2 year old daughter Saoirse. They all lend their helping hand to the release. Stream the new song "Eden Prison" below, and get tickets to their show at Brooklyn Masonic Temple on 10/8. The Bowery Ballroom show scheduled for the next day is now sold out.

Devendra Banhart also contributed to the new Zach Hill solo record, and recently teamed up with Beck for a song to the recently released Life During Wartime, the new movie from the king of awkward hilarity, Todd Solondz (see Happiness, Welcome To The Dollhouse, etc).

The Banhart/Beck song, with lyrics written by Solondz, is streaming, along with the Swans song, Zach Hill album tracklist, all tour dates (including a UK trek with Arcade Fire) and contest details, below...
