Midnight at Rites of Darkness (more by BBG)

2011 was a year that I spent delving deep into record bins, in the pit at shows, and searching for the most brutal of the brutal at festivals across the country including Maryland Deathfest, Chaos in Tejas, Rites of Darkness, SXSW, the A389 Anniversary show, California Discord Fest, and many others. It was also a year when I revisited my hardcore roots, and went further down the rabbit hole with DIY shows and independent records.
2011's choices for best of the year were tougher than I could have imagined, as opposed to my clear cut 2010 choice for favorite album of the year. That said, favorite records are about playability, and these are the LPs that wore out my needle and earned the most plays on my digital device (note: I made sure to remove a record that I was directly involved in because that would clearly be near the top of the list). I hope you enjoyed these records as much as I did in 2011 and if not, please share what you enjoyed below. I already can't wait for 2012.
My favorite records and shows of 2011 are below.

P.L.F. at Bushwick Bikes

Buskwick Bikes was ablaze, as Czech grind badasses Gride and Gulf Coast terrorizers P.L.F. played the sticky-hot store on Tuesday (5/25) with support from Powercup and Unmen. Gride and P.L.F. were coming to the end of a tour together that terminated at the Maryland Deathfest Pre-Party (with Iron Lung, Birdflesh, General Surgery, and many notable others).
Unmen kicked the show off with a bang. The New Jersey band's style of grind had a few decent riffs and plenty of energy to boot. Canadian grind duo Powercup followed and impressed me much less despite their humor/dedication to home repair. "Thanks guys, this one's called 'From Enslavement to Renovation'"
Gride was my main attraction, and the Czech grind combo did not disappoint, despite a close to fully-naked man in the pit (johnson-a-flappin) and another that slammed into the bassist, almost causing a premature end to the show. (The bass player muttered something in broken English, handed his instrument to the overeager dancer and gestured, "here, you do it"). Gride's recorded material whizzes by at an incredible pace, but in the live setting those songs go waaay into the red - blasting away at a seemingly impossible rate. Brutality is an understatement.
Pretty Little Flower headlined the evening and impressed as well; the "Gulf Coast Hardcore" duo toils in a thrashier brand of grind that clearly was well-executed and fun. Whereas Gride were lightning fast and precise with their riffage, P.L.F. valued the bigger tones in addition to their intense blasts (drummer Frank served time in the now much-revered Insect Warfare). Newly converted fan, I am.
A few pics from the show and a pair of (somewhat blown-out) videos are below...

Slang

Japanese hardcore hits the US shores when Slang crash lands at Chaos In Tejas 2010. Luckily for the rest of us, these headcases will hit the road for a string of dates including NYC twice as part of the ongoing Hardcore Gig Volume series! First up, Slang will team up with faves Mind Eraser, Nomos and The Rival Mob for a show at Death By Audio on June 9th. Three days later, Slang will join Perdition to support World Burns To Death (!) when the band plays Cake Shop on June 12th, their first NYC show in close to three years. Full tour dates and Slang tour flyer below.
Before that, Connecticut's The Pist will headline Europa with The Wankys, Chaos Destroy, Brain Killer, and Guilt Trip. Tickets are on sale.
Ceremony have a new album Rohnert Park due via Bridge Nine Records, and the band will be hitting the road hard over the summer as a result, doing their first pass at NYC with Blacklisted, Skin Like Iron, and The Men at Cake Shop on June 19th. The show will be an early show, and ending in time so that you can catch the previously scheduled Eddy Current Supression Ring/Pissed Jeans show at its new venue, Death By Audio (was Market Hotel). Ceremony will also be back in NYC with Punch for a pair of shows on August 7th and 8th at ABC No Rio and Death By Audio respectively.
Finland's Kyklooppien Sukupuutto are playing a pair of NYC dates as part of a larger tour for the Finnish band. Block off May 14th (Friday - TONIGHT) or May 15th (Saturday) to catch them at The Charleston (with Dry Spell, The Ominous Order of Flithy Mongrels, & Pollution) or ABC No Rio (with Acid Reflux, Staring Problem, & Crazy Spirit) respectively to catch this band before they scoot down to Chaos in Tejas 2010. Full dates are below...
In related Chaos in Tejas news, the Leatherface cancellation at Knitting Factory was just the beginning! The UK band has also cancelled their US tour including their appearance at Chaos in Tejas.
In other awesome festival news, the onslaught of post-MDF tours continue, as Mass Grave will play June 4th at new venue The Acheron (57 Waterbury St.) in Brooklyn alongside Atakke, HOG, Disma. The show originally included Bay Area d-beaters Stormcrow (and was at Rock Star Bar), who have since cancelled their appearance. Stormcrow will, however, team up with another MDF band, Coffins, for a split on 20 Buck Spin. The label doesn't have a release date, but is "hoping" to have it out by the time MDF rolls around.
Another pair of MDF'ers Jesus Crost and Rompeprop will hit the road for a tour as well, tagging Fontana's on May 26th with Ingrowing (who are also playing The Charleston on May 21st), before the festival. The show is the only other US date for the pair so far. Jesus Crost is currently streaming three new songs from their LP 010 at their myspace. Pick up that record via Bones Brigade. JC will also record a few songs later this year for a split with Phobia.
Texas terrors PLF have also scheduled an NYC show with Czech grinders Gride as part of a larger tour for the pair surrounding their MDF appearance. Power Cup, Unmen, and InTheShit will support the pair on the May 25th show at Bushwick Bike Shop.

Twilight

Surprise! After a few CDs made their way into record stores accidentally (I am told) Twilight, the Blake Judd/Wrest project that now features N. Imperial (Kreig), Aaron Turner (Isis), Stavros Giannopoulos (The Atlas Moth) and Sanford Parker (Minsk) is out NOW on CD via Southern Lord! The record was engineered by Sanford Parker, who also contributed synths, and features eight tracks with Robert Lowe (Lichens) contributing vocals to three of them. No official word on a release date for the LP, but get out and order a copy... I think I may enjoy it more than the new Nachtmystium. Speaking of the new Nachtmystium, Stereogum recently premiered the keyboard heavy "No Funeral" from the forthcoming Addicts: Black Meddle Pt. II. Dig on that above.
Call me obsessed, but the new Black Breath, Heavy Breathing, is on serious rotation lately- much like their previous EP Razors To Oblivion was last year. The new LP has Kurt Ballou's dirty little fingers all over it, bringing their rich early Swedish death metal meets hardcore sound to life, as exhibited in "Children of The Horn" available above. Get Heavy Breathing now via Southern Lord. Black Breath will open the BV/1000 Knives/AEG Live Converge extravaganza at Santos Party House on 5/6 along with Touche Amore and Lewd Acts. Make sure and get their early (their live show is worth it), and get your tickets in advance (it WILL sell out). Seriously brutal and fun stuff... you gotta love a band that screams "reject Christ, spit on the cross" at the top of their lungs. Or am I alone on that one?
Though it only lasts two tracks (but conversely- 35 minutes), the new EP from Altar of Plagues, Tides, is every bit as powerful as White Tomb, one of my favorite LPs of last year. AoP's new Tides EP is currently up for pre-order via Burning World Records (cop it), but until that package arrives, make sure and dig on "Atlantic Lights" from the EP (50% of the record!) , which makes it's world premiere here!
An LP from last year that was just too good to be free was Celeste's Misanthrope(s). With a potent mix of black metal, furious hardcore, and even melody, it was a seriously underrated record that deserved much more attention than it got. Even though Misanthrope(s) is barely in the rear view, the band has released their new LP, Morte Nee(s) for FREE download (get it above). Make sure and order a copy of the LP for yourself via Denovali as well though, it's one to keep for posterity.
Richmond's Inter Arma totally floored me at The Charleston with their furious mix of black metal, southern stoner style and Neurosis-style imperial riffage. Besides being a jawdropping live band, Inter Arma has also put together a pretty memorable record as well in the form of Sundown, out soon on Forcefield Records. Featuring members of another great Richmond band, Bastard Sapling, check out the band when they hit the road in July, but until then, check out Sundown!
A darkness has settled over the land... details on Watain's new album have been revealed! Entitled Lawless Darkness, the effort was recorded at Necromorbus Studio (Deathspell Omega, Funeral Mist, Ondskapt, Nominon, Unanimated et al) in Alvik, Sweden, and is due on June 7 with the below cover art and the tracklisting as listed down below. The release follows their picture disc EP Reaping Death which quickly disappeared, though the CD single is currently available.
That Watain cover, plus news on Blood Revolt (Primordial + Revenge), Loss, Man Is The Bastard, Hail of Bullets, Woe, a new Inquisition LP, and more as Short Wave Warfare continues....
