Entombed was up next, and they were one of the loosest bands I've ever seen onstage. They almost reminded me of Eyehategod, but without the deliberately sculpted feedback and at twice the speed. They played a lot of old material ("Demon," "Wolverine Blues," their cover of Roky Erickson's "Night of the Vampire"), but after all, isn't it all old material?Entombed returned to NYC on June 2nd, as part of a round of dates in conjunction with their appearance at Maryland Deathfest. The Swedish DM legends were on tour with Metal Blade's Woe of Tyrants, but the supporting crew that was the highlight for me were local progressive melo-death-ers Gwynbleidd. Facing The Sun, who I missed, opened the proceedings.
...Anyway, the set was terrific. [Lars-Goran] Petrov is an entertaining frontman, dressed half scruffy-rock 'n' roller and half homeless-guy and kinda shambling back and forth onstage, half hunched over like a cross between a gorilla and Ozzy Osbourne, and his voice is just as leonine and room-filling as it is on record. Even though the band only has one guitarist these days, that guitarist, Alex Hellid, keeps the trademark Entombed ultra-distorted roar going at full strength, and the rhythm section has death metal power but rock 'n' roll swing. -[Running The Voodoo Down]

Sea of Bones

Sadly, due to the death of someone very dear in one of our families (and by extension, the Goes Cube family as a whole), Goes Cube will be unable to play our show with Cable and Liturgy on 12/3 at Fontanas...Best to you and your family, Goes Cube. Cable and Liturgy will still be a-rockin' TONIGHT (12/3) at Fontana's though, joined by the newly added Sea of Bones. The FREE show will feature some FREE suds as well, and will double as a party for the black metal documentary Until The Light Takes Us, which also just had a party at Knitting Factory, and which drops (into theaters) Friday (12/4).
We apologize for having to cancel and appreciate your understanding. We have some big news coming up, and we DO have another FREE show on 12/18 (at Spike Hill in Williamsburg with some other great bands). Please stay tuned, stay in touch, and be well. -David, Kenny, and Matt.
Sea of Bones released The Harvest independently, as in by themselves... for free download, earlier this year. Check out that LP above. The band also recently played with Across Tundras, Monolith, and Bubonic Bear at Mill Creek Tavern in Philadelphia on 11/25 and Union Pool on 11/26 with Gwynbleidd as part of AT's previously discussed east coast tour. If you missed Gwynbleidd, catch them Fontana's on Sat (12/5) fri with B.I.T.E. and Rattling Cages.

Across Tundras

Nashville's Across Tundras are hitting the road for a short burst of dates at the end of November, including NYC at Union Pool on 11/27 (Black Friday) with Sea of Bones and Gwynbleidd.
Recently relocated from Denver, Colorado to Nashville, Tennessee ACROSS TUNDRAS have realized a long-evolving sound that merges elements of doom and drone with psychedelic rock, folk and traditional Americana. This unique sound brings an interesting country twang to heavy music, conjuring images of the strange waters between EARTH, NEIL YOUNG, BLACK SABBATH, WOODY GUTHRIE and NEUROSIS.The show will do double duty; as a coming out party for Herds of Fathomless Valleys (a collection of demos and live tracks released earlier this year and available for download above) and as a celebration for Old World Wanderer, their new LP due on Robotic Empire.
Prog metallers Gwynbleidd recently released their new LP, Nostalgia.

Fuck The Facts

In their second Brooklyn show in as many months and their second show in two cities in one day, Anal Cunt headlined the Show No Mercy event at Public Assembly on July 5th after playing an earlier set at the Hostile City Death Fest in Philly (a two day festival that started on the 4th).
Public Assembly was a highly eclectic affair. Seth Putnam and his band of antisocial fuck-ups were teamed up with the punishing grind assault of Fuck The Facts, prog-leaning stylings of Gwynbleidd, ambient nightmares brought on by Locrian, and the silly yet brutal deathgrind of Copremesis (seriously silly... Copremesis even did a techno "performance" complete with glowsticks)!
Fuck the Facts also played Hostile City Deathfest too, but on on July 4th. Our friends at Invisible Oranges were there:
Canada's Fuck the Facts are seasoned veterans, and it showed. Vocalist Mel Mongeon evokes Henry Rollins' warrior poses. She constantly coils and uncoils, bounding up on monitors, crouching down low, shrieking, growling, spitting. Her eye contact is not rehearsed. She is fully "in" her performance, and if she stares daggers through you, it is incidental and fleeting... Her band's grindcore meshes Godfleshian harmonics and tectonic sludge with punishing blastbeats.Next up FTF will tour for a couple weeks at the tail end of July leading up to Central Illinois Metalfest (Anal Cunt is there too) and a few scattered dates before and after.
The next edition of Show No Mercy will take place Public Assembly on August 2nd.
All FTF, Locrian(with The Human Quena Orchestra), and AxCx dates, and the rest of the July Show No Mercy pictures, are below....

June's Show No Mercy event is this Sunday (6/7), and we already have another event to look forward to after that! Eclectic is the name of the game as Anal Cunt (who recently played Europa) will team up with grinders Fuck The Facts, Locrian, Gwynbleidd, and Copremesis for a July 5th show at Public Assembly. Until then, Salome awaits on June 7th with Black Anvil, Woe, and Snake Sustaine (mems-A Life Once Lost).
Want to go Sunday? I have two pairs of tickets to give away. Email us at BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM with a subject line of "SALOME", and include your first and last name. Two winners will be selected at random and notified the afternoon of June 5th.
Fuck The Facts recently announced the vinyl release of Disgorge Mexico via Stillborn Records on June 9th. The limited edition pressing will have 500 total copies, with 400 on white and 100 on black vinyl. Preorder that here.
Locrian has been busy since the beginning of 2009, dropping Drenched Lands earlier this year on At War With False Noise, and more recently, the Land of Decay VHS + 3" CD available here. 2009 will also see the releases of the Drenched Lands LP (via BloodLust) and a split 7" w/ Harpoon on Hewhocorrupts Inc. Show No Mercy is not their only upcoming NYC-area show either. They've added another on July 3rd at Lucky Cheng's. All dates below.
Copremesis, who describe themselves as "NS Death/Grind performed by minorities to hail the ARYAN RACE!!!", recently released the lilting ode to transexual perversion Muay Thai Ladyboys and are now offering all of their other releases for gratis download.
Rosetta recently played a Show No Mercy show, and will be in NYC once again on June 5th at Death By Audio.
