Pitchfork Fest Day Three (Sunday, 7/17/11) was the day to go if you were looking to dance. The last day of the fest was pretty heavy on the electronic music with Cut Copy, Toro y Moi, HEALTH, Baths, Darkstar, and for something way chiller, How to Dress Well. The third day provided lo-fi masters Kurt Vile, Ariel Pink, and Deerhunter, and complete opposite ends of the hip hop spectrum with the abrasive and utterly offensive Odd Future and the this-must-be-from-another-planet rap of Shabazz Palaces. Day three was also the one chance to see a metal band (Kylesa).

Sunday was headlined by TV on the Radio. TVOTR, like Fleet Foxes who headlined the day before, have a wildly impressive double bill at Williamsburg Waterfront in September. Theirs is with Broken Social Scene on September 8. Tickets are still available.

Twin Sister played Sunday, and you can catch them for free in McCarren Park this Wednesday night (7/27).

Pictures of OFWGTKA's set are HERE. Day Two HERE. Day One HERE. Pics from the rest of Day Three are below...

Cults @ House of Vans
Cults

To be clear, the below video is NOT the latest from Integrity. Actually, it is the latest video from the much more serene Cults, who uses "Go Outside" from their debut LP to soundtrack clips of the Jim Jones cult and the surrounding compound. Sick shit guys... thats a compliment.

"To tell the story of Cults' hauntingly beautiful track, "Go Outside", I was inspired to bring the band inside the world of Jim Jones' famous religious cult, Peoples Temple, and the eventual tragedy in Jonestown. Fortunately, when exploring the feasibility of this video I became acquainted with Fielding M. McGehee III, an expert on Peoples Temple history and the primary researcher for the Jonestown Archive. It is thanks to him and his encouragement that I was able to take on this project and through his support gained access to over two and half hours of home videos showing Peoples Temple in Jonestown." - [director Isaiah Seret]
Cults played House of Vans on June 30th as part of a killer (not in a Jim Jones-way) lineup that included new-Matador-signees Ceremony, HEALTH, and No Age. The show was packed and bonkers from the beginning with a full-on mosh pit breaking out for opener Ceremony who were followed by Cults who in turn filled in the large warehouse with less-violently acting people. HEALTH and No Age followed. Pictures are in this post and many more of them are below.

House of Vans is basically this super large sweet warehouse that is sometimes used for skateboarding with a big stage for the bands. It sounded good and there was plenty of room for people to see, dance, mingle, and hang out in the courtyard outside which included a bar with FREE BEER, and portapotties. Food too (not sure if that was free).

House of Vans will host a similarly great party on Thursday (7/14, tomorrow), with Superchunk headlining and OFF!/Lemuria providing support. RSVP is still open.

OFF!, Superchunk, HEALTH and No Age all play the Pitchfork Fest in Chicago this weekend.

Off! also just released a new live video. The whole 37 seconds of it is also below...

Pictureplane

Speaking of Teengirl Fantasy, they're set to head out on tour with Pictureplane in late July. The tour kicks off in Boston on July 20 and hits NYC on July 22 at a TBD location and July 23 at Coco66. Gatekeeper, who also play 285 Kent with Teengirl Fantasy this Saturday night (June 18), open the tour. Tickets for the Coco66 show are on sale now.

Pictureplane will release Thee Physical on July 19 via Lovepump United. The album was produced and recorded by Egedy and mixed/co-produced by Jupiter Keyes of HEALTH. Grab the tracks "Post Physical" and "Real Is a Feeling" above. Those tracks are two of the more mildly-named tracks on the new album. Check out song titles like "Techno Fetish" and "Trancegender" on the full tracklist below.

Both Pictureplane and Teengirl Fantasy also play PS1 Warm Up events this summer in Long Island City, but on different days. As just mentioned, Teengirl Fantasy play on August 27. Pictureplane plays one week prior on August 20 with Juan Maclean (DFA), Blood Orange (Dev from Lightspeed Champion), Solange (Knowles), Grimes, and Ford & Lopatin (formerly Games).

The Juan Maclean (Juan and Nancy)
Juan Maclean

Juan Maclean has a few other DJ sets coming up this summer as well. Tonight (6/17), as mentioned, he'll transform Williamsburg's Metro Community Laundromat into the Dirty Disco Laundrette with fellow DFA DJ Justin Miller. The flier for the show is below. Tickets are still available (which is not surprising if you look at the price). Juan Maclean also DJs at Cielo Club on June 28 with Eli Escobar and Runaway. Tickets are available.

Blood Orange and Grimes open the Washed Out show at Bowery Ballroom on July 11. Blood Orange also open the previously announced The Ghost of a Sabre Tooth Tiger (Sean Lennon) free show on June 24 at South Street Seaport.

SCUM

In other Grimes news, she remixed the single "Summon The Sound" by British psychedelic punks S.C.U.M.. "Summon The Sound" is off their upcoming debut Amber Hands which comes out late summer/early fall on Mute Records. The band is named for the 1968 feminist tract S.C.U.M. (Society for Cutting Up Men) Manifesto by Valerie Solanas. S.C.U.M. just finished up a tour with The Kills in the UK. Listen to the original and the Grimes remix (which you can also download above), below.

Grimes also has other upcoming shows with fellow Canadians Gobble Gobble and Pat Jordache. All tour dates, Pictureplane album info, and other stuff below...

House of Vans

As promised, House of Vans, which is located at 25 Franklin St in Brooklyn, is hosting free shows this summer. Stepping in just at the right moment to possibly fill the gap left by the loss of the Pool Parties, there will be six free-with-RSVP Vans House Parties between June 30th and August 25th.

The lineups for the first two FYF-presented, all-ages shows have been revealed, as have all six dates to hold (all of which are weekdays). No Age, HEALTH, Cults, and Ceremony play the Greenpoint venue on Thursday, June 30. Superchunk, Off!, and Lemuria will play on Thursday, July 14. The other dates, with lineups still TBA, are July 29 (a Friday), August 4 (a Thursday), August 18 (a Thursday), and August 25 (a Thursday). RSVP links are at their site, and note:

"In order to gain access to the free shows at the House of Vans this summer, you must RSVP to reserve a place on the list. RSVP links are listed under each show on this site.

Due to capacity restraints each event will be first come, first serve. A line will form in front of the building at 5pm, no line ups are allowed prior to that. There will be food and drinks inside, no outside food and drinks will be allowed in."

Meanwhile Cults are on tour and in NYC now (and playing Summerstage this summer too), and Off! will be here soon with Dinosaur Jr., Henry Rollins and Fucked Up.

Junk CultureJunk Culture

Junk Culture, which is made up of electronic artist Deepak Mantena and his younger brother Nitin Mantena on drums, got in position on stage and music immediately started flowing from the speakers. Everyone started dancing as if they were commanded to do so. They opened with a song which doesn't require any real dancing effort because your body starts swaying and your head starts bopping involuntarily with the beat. While they played, random videos like crashing ocean waves and a kid slalom skateboarding flashed on a large screen behind them. The random videos continued through the show with no pattern or theme, and later Deepak told me the videos were just '50s and '60s propaganda he chopped and assembled in the same fashion as he does music. [The Reflector on Junk Culture live Oct. 2009]
Junk Culture is the lo-fi pop/hip-hop beats project of Illegal Art's Deepak Mantena, with his brother Nitin on drums (they also make sketch comedy videos as Celery TV, see below). They'll be coming to New York this weekend as part of their tour with psychy indie-pop Common Loon, the Champaign, IL duo of Matthew Campbell and Robert Hirschfeld. Both bands play Friday, July 9th at Coco 66 with k.Flay and Ava Luna, and the next night (7/10) at Union Hall with the Diggs.

Junk Culture's West Coast EP came out in 2009 on Illegal Art (home of Girl Talk), and he has a new record due in the fall. Common Loons's The Long Dream of Birds came out in April - check it out streaming on their Bandcamp.

Coming up, Junk Culture has a September tour with Tobacco who are giving away a free mix tape, and whose HEALTH remix from the new HEALTH remix LP, you can download above. Tobacco's Manic Meat came out in May which is also when The Hood Internet released a free mashup EP using some songs from it.

Tobacco's Anticon labelmates Why? are playing the debut 2010 Pool Party on July 11th.

HEALTH are playing Santos Party House this summer.

Girl Talk is playing Camp Bisco.

HEALTH @ Bowery Ballroom in June (more by Erez Avissar)

""Well, of course, we were really busy with Talking Heads and our singer, David Byrne, said that he was going to do a solo album and that ended up being called The Catherine Wheel but that he didn't know how long it was going to take. Then Jerry Harrison, our keyboard player, said, 'Well, if David's going to do a solo album then I'm gong to do a solo album!' So those two guys told us that they were going to be doing solo albums.

"We had just come off tour in 1980 for Remain In Light with the expanded line up and it had really been a great tour and very exciting but it was expensive for us so at the end of the tour our accountant said, 'Well, you've gotta do something because you've only got a couple of thousand dollars in the bank!' So Tina [Weymouth] and I looked at each other and said, 'What shall we do?..." [Chris Frantz]

Tom Tom Club have added another NYC show to their previously-announced tour. Two days after their October 14th show at Santos Party House (tickets still on sale), they'll play a show at Brooklyn Bowl. Tickets for the October 16th gig go on sale Friday at noon.

And speaking of Santos Party House, HEALTH have been added to the July 22nd Midnight Juggernauts show there. Tickets are on sale.

HEALTH
Health

UK's Gold Panda kicked things off with his synthetic glitch-house, fitting in with a certain forward-thinking new breed of dance music (Pictureplane, Crystal Castles) that HEALTH so openly loves (this was their "DISCO2" comp record release after all). Just a shame that from the audience's vantage point you couldn't see him construct drum beats and launch samples from his MPC.

Indian Jewelry was the surprise face-melting of the night, summoning spirits at Music Hall with an awesomely loud and heavy set that mixed the occult with the industrial. Better experienced live than on record.

HEALTH were as tight as I've ever seen them, playing pretty much their whole discography as fans eagerly sent their bodies aflail and shifted like a drunken sea. They capped off their set with the new "USA Boys" before returning to do an encore which consisted of "Courtship", a song that runs for less than a minute. I looked at my friend and we both laughed a little, knowing we couldn't really ask for more.

More dates HERE. More pictures from Sunday's show at Music Hall below...

Health

HEALTH are releasing DISCO2, a remix album of their 2009 LP, GET COLOR, on June 22nd through Lovepump United. The concept is a follow-up of sorts to DISCO, a remix collection of songs from their debut self-titled. The new record comes with a bonus "digital album" that has 12 additional remixes. One of those bonus- tracks is a remix of the single "DIE SLOW" done by Jersey DJ collective Pink Stallone. Get it above, or stream the song below.

You can actually catch Pink Stallone live at Love Tempo, a monthly party at Williamsburg's Rose Live Music. The next edition of that is on Saturday, June 19th with guests Love on the Run and Peter Reyes. The mixes on Pink Stallone's Myspace are definitely worth checking out if you're looking for some chill disco-funk jams to bring in the weekend. They have their first full-length set to come out sometime this summer.

HEALTH, who played a NXNE show in Toronto last night, are currently on tour, and they come to Music Hall of Williamsburg for a show on June 20th. Also on the bill are Indian Jewelry, Gold Panda and Robin (of 20JazzFunkGreats/TriAngle). Tickets are still on sale.

After that HEALTH have a European tour, followed by a handful of US dates around Whartscape and Lolla, more Euro fests, and then an October European tour with Crystal Castles (who are in NYC for Hard Fest in August).

BrooklynVegan has a pair of tickets to give away to HEALTH at MHOW (along with a copy of the remix record). Details on how to enter, the streaming remix and the full album tracklist, all tour dates and more are below...

Dan Deacon @ Cake Shop on May 27th (via Youtube, below)
Dan Deacon

Dan Deacon played one of the last shows of Cake Shop's five-year-anniversary month on Thursday, May 27th. Also at the gig were Height, Eternal Summers, Big Troubles and Dustin Wong. A YouTube slideshow of pictures from the show is posted below.

Dan Deacon and his friends at Wham City have posted details on this year's Whartscape Festival in Baltimore on July 22-25. Confirmed acts include Wye Oak, Deakin, Javelin, Lightning Bolt, No Ave, Talk Normal, Zach Hill, Arab on Radar, Xiu Xiu, Yip Yip, Dan Deacon Ensemble and Ponytail (Beach House was intially listed but has since been removed). More bands are TBA. Tickets go on sale at WhamCity.com and Baltimore's True Vine Records on June 15th.

For Arab on Radar, this is yet another date to add to the list of reunion gigs they have scheduled in July, August and September.

Wye Oak are also playing Siren in July.

Deakin (ex-Animal Collective) will hopefully schedule a NYC show one day soon.

Dan Deacon will be back in NYC for a show on June 15th at Red Hook Park (part of a series of shows in the park that kicks off TONIGHT - June 1st).

WBAR BBQ 2010

The on-again, off-again rain on Sunday didn't cancel the 17th annual WBAR-B-Q, but it did move the show inside to Barnard's LeFrak Gym, a bit different aesthetically from the lush spring greenery outside but serviceable enough. It helped that the lineup had a focus on experimental noise and noise-inspired acts - every act I saw had the reverb and distortion keyed up, so the added resonance of the hall wasn't really an issue.

The show kicked off with Prince Rama, U.S. Girls and Think About Life, all of whom went on before I got there a little after 2pm. By then the free food was gone too, but the cotton candy machine and sno-cones were stocked all day.

On the center stage, Baltimore's Lower Dens (with guitarist Jana Hunter) played floating, moody distorted rock; drone violinist and loopmaster Burning Star Core/C Spencer Yeh serenaded (with huge bass drops) along the back wall; and Blues Control performed effects-heavy keyboard-and-tape jams.

The room looked fairly empty for most of the day (being a huge gym), but by the time Cold Cave went on people were on their feet and dancing. New member Jennifer Clavin (ex-Mika Miko) played keys and stepped in for vocals, and the band was off after a short-ish, no-encore set. Twin Stumps and their crazily enthused frontman set up on the floor across the gym and kept the show going with dissonant, pointed punk. Liturgy closed the show, but I took off before they played.

It was the second free show of the weekend for Cold Cave, who played the HEALTH-headlined NYU Solar One show the day before (which I heard also had plenty of room for people to move around). They play (Le) Poisson Rouge on Thursday with Cult Of Youth, Beaut, Max (reading), Mike Goodstein (WFMU) and DJ Mike Simonetti (Italians Do It Better). Tickets are still on sale.

More pictures from Barnard and a video of HEALTH at Solar One are below...

HEALTHHEALTH

HEALTH is the secret band at Saturday's free, open to the public, NYU, Earth Day, Cold Cave show at Solar One (thx Mike!). If you miss it, HEALTH are back in June as part of a tour.

Mountain Man

The first-ever Mountain Man Fest (not affiliated with the band Mountain Man) is tentatively set for July 24th in Saratoga Springs, NY. I say tentative because for the fest to happen it first has to be funded in full through a Kickstarter page with the goal of $65,000. What all that money is being used for isn't 100% clear, but the fest has until May 12th to make that goal. For a ticket, you need to "donate" at least $35. As of this writing it looks like they've sold 12 with "1488 of 1500 remaining".

Though that's a daunting goal (1,500 regularly priced tickets plus other donations), the "confirmed" lineup so far isn't that bad if you consider how much it would cost you to see each band separately (or as the fest puts it, "You (yes you!) get to see 12 hrs+ of amazing bands"): Islands (their only show currently), HEALTH (who are coming to NYC in June), Real Estate, Phantogram, Woods, Summer Camp, Memoryhouse, Pill Wonder, Family Portrait, Cults, Eternal Summers and Yip Yip ("You'll also be blessed with the sweet satisfaction of knowing that YOU helped make possible this history making musical event"). Underwater Peoples Records are involved in sponsoring the fest (four bands from the label are playing the show).

Another version of the cool poster art (which you can buy as part of giving them money) and the lineup again are below...

Lollapalooza

"The 2010 Lollapalooza line-up is official: Soundgarden, Green Day, Lady Gaga, Arcade Fire, The Strokes, and Phoenix will headline, joined by Social Distortion, MGMT, Jimmy Cliff, Hot Chip, and The Black Keys. With 130 bands on this year's bill, its sure to be a weekend long feast for the ears.

It's a monumental year for Lollapalooza, filled with homecomings, reunions, and first-times. Soundgarden, 1992 and 1996 Lollapalooza alumni, return to the Lollapalooza stage for their first performance since 1997. Green Day will rock Grant Park sixteen years after their first Lollapalooza appearance. While Lady Gaga will headline the festival only three short years after playing the BMI stage at Lollapalooza 2007.

Arcade Fire returns to Grant Park, having played the reincarnated Lollapalooza in 2005. This is the first Lollapalooza for The Strokes - and also their first show in four years. And making their Lollapalooza debut: Phoenix." - Lollapalooza
After extremely accurate early leaks and then much teasing, Lollapalooza oficially announces this year's lineup. Check it out below...

After spending four days in Austin for SXSW, my personal MtyMx experience started with an all-day trip from Austin to Monterrey on Sunday. I arrived to see Andrew W.K.'s set that night, the after-party at the Garage, and Monday from first to last band (minus the comedy set with Dan Deacon, though there are pictures of him too). I'm now writing this from Tennessee where the Big Ears Fest is about to begin. Stay tuned for reports about that, and check out my pictures from the festival in Mexico, with captions, below...

The experiment that was the first MtyMx Festival is over. The last day of Todd P's Mexican festival (3/22) featured 14 acts, half of which were from Mexico. Liars, HEALTH, and Neon Indian all made it for their headlining sets (the acts that were flown in had very few problems for the most part). The rest of the last day's lineup included Ratas del Vaticano (Mexico), Indian Jewelry, Lemonade, BamBam (Mexico), Jóvenes y Sexys (Venezuela), Mockinpott (Mexico), Best Fwends, High Places, Alexico (Mexico), Mentira Mentira (Mexico) and Sr. Amable & Mr. Racoon (Mexico). The Monday after-fest show that was held at Yo Garage for all three nights featured sets by Coasting, noisepunks XYX, and Mentira Mentira (again).

Bands that didn't make it for their Monday sets for one reason or another included No Age, Thee Oh Sees (they tried to get past the border at least twice), Liturgy, The Sandwitches, Javelin, Salem, DD/MM/YYY, Fergus and Geronimo, Big Troubles, Pictureplane, Gauntlet Hair, Tearist, Josephine and the Mousepeople, and Baths. Remember that was just day three. It was a similar situation each day, but I never planned on being there for the first day (SXSW), and I got there much later than expected on the second. As I write/dictate this, I'm currently waiting for a noon (note: it's two hours earlier here than it is in NY) Greyhound bus out of Monterrey that's going back to Austin (an approximately 8 hour trip that took about 11 hours of driving and 8 hours of waiting on the way in). There were two 1am Todd P buses that left last night directly after Liars, but our stuff (and a bed) was in our hotel room.

[note: Andrew is now on the bus]

How to get home seemed to be the main focus on everyone's mind early on the last day. Once that was all figured out, things turned more optimistic and Todd P even made announcements referencing next year.

Dan Deacon was a constant presence at the festival. He actually replaced Thee Oh Sees on the last day as "Dan Deacon & friends", a short comedy set. Another group that performed for multiple days was Das Racist who treated late Sunday night arrivals to an energetic set at the after-party.

Though I only spent 36 hours total in Monterrey and saw fewer bands than I caught Thursday afternoon in Austin, I made lots of new friends, saw some great sets, and it was an experience that won't soon be forgotten. Safety was a big question, but though the festival had issues (including theft on the festival grounds, and at least one mugging), people actually getting hurt wasn't one of them.
