While Twinkies have a reputation for an unlimited shelf life, the company that makes the junk food may not not.I won't be running out and stocking up on any Twinkies. I mean, they're gross, but I can't help feeling nostalgic for the products that poisoned my body as a child and the ads that helped them do it! Continue the trip down memory lane and/or feeling hungry and/or disgusted and/or find some more ironic t-shirt ideas, below...
Hostess Brands, the bankrupt maker of cream-filled pastries like Twinkies and Ho Hos, said on Friday that it planned to wind down its operations. The decision comes a week after one of the company's biggest unions went on strike to protest a labor contract.
Friday's move could spell the end of Hostess, a company that has endured wars, countless diet fads and even an earlier Chapter 11 filing. But the liquidation may not mean the end of its signature product, the Twinkie, with its cake exterior and cream filling. The confection -- originally banana flavored, rather than the vanilla of today -- could find new life under a different owner, if the company auctions off its brands and assets.
In the short term, Twinkies may be in short supply. The last batches rolled off Hostess production lines early Friday morning, according to Tom Becker, a company spokesman, and no new products will be made for the time being. [NY Times]
Wayne Coyne hands out candy (more)
Despite the mayor's perhaps optimistic statement about rescheduling the big NYC Halloween Parade that was cancelled due to Sandy, there has been no update since November 3rd when the Village Parade organizers posted the following:
The Mayor's Office has told us that the event is cancelled and they cannot give us a reschedule date any time in the foreseeable future. As you know the Marathon was also canceled. We will keep you updated if anything changes for the future!I think we can all accept by now that the next Halloween parade should be and will be on October 31, 2013. That said, kids on the Lower East Side will have a second chance to celebrate the holiday. The NY Post reports, "about 40 merchants in the neighborhood have agreed to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters Saturday, according to the scary fun house "Killers: A Nightmare Haunted House."" Bowery Boogie says kids in the LES will be celebrating Friday afternoon too. On October 31st, those kids were in the dark.
We thank you all for the incredible support you have given us during these last very trying and exhausting days!
The Spirit of the Parade is YOUR Spirit --and YOU are all joyful, energetic, inspired, and creative folks!

Webster Hall, home of one of the biggest annual Halloween parties in the city, has also rescheduled their annual event which will now take place this Saturday (11/10), The Virgin Sacrifice included...
Throughout the evening, guests witness a series of mind-blowing spectacles. At the stroke of Midnight, with flames blazing, an innocent virgin is picked from the crowd. Stripped of her clothing and dignity, the crowd watches as she is ritualistically sacrificed on a massive pentagram hung 40 feet in the air.The best costume of the night will win $5000.

BrooklynVegan photographer Gretchen Robinette braved the East River crossings on Halloween to snap some pictures of an eerie Lower Manhattan in the wake of Hurricane Sandy's destruction. She says:
I biked to DUMBO in Brooklyn and shot the Manhattan Bridge and view of Lower Manhattan , next to Jane's Carousel in Brooklyn Park on Halloween night, post Hurricane Sandy. The park was closed and dark and empty. Manhattan Bridge is half lit, and half dark straight, leading straight in to China Town blackness. Biking on the Manhattan Bridge in to Manhattan now feels like riding into an ominous, creepy black void. I just had my bike light stolen and did not think to bring a flash light. Couldn't have been darker in a city that is always glowing with light. People walked with flashlights just to see the sidewalk in front of them, an occasional blast of white light next to a generator lit up part of a street, enabling people to search for a corner receiving some sort of cell phone reception. Never saw an eerier, creepier, night in Manhattan. Her photos are in this post. More below...
Then Chinatown to Lower East Side, then entering and crossing Williamsburg Bridge. Its strange to head towards Brooklyn to see bright lights and city hustle, leaving behind a heavy dark and emptiness of Lower Manhattan
Hunx as Gayracula
All things considered, we hope you had a Happy Halloween. You already saw what John Vanderslice and Freelance Whales dressed up as, and Dum Dum Girls' nun costumes (Crocodiles in there too). We also already posted Deap Vally, Those Darlins & the Mountain Goats in Halloween attire, and you saw Vampire Weekend all decked out for Kimmel. Here's a whole bunch more. That's Hunx and a punx above. See the rest (sort of NSFW), below...
Vampire Weekend on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night
Vampire Weekend were musical guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Halloween night (10/31) which is being broadcast this week from Brooklyn (though they canceled Monday's show due to Hurricane Sandy). Dressed as skeletons, they performed a brand new song, "Unbelievers," as well as their old chesnutt "Oxford Comma." Video of both songs is below.
Tonight's Jimmy Kimmel Live will features Jon Stewart & Stephen Colbert, plus The Avett Brothers with the Broooklyn Philharmonic, which should be pretty cool.
Videos are below.
John Vanderslice as Tigger (via David Williams)
John Vanderslice and Crooked Fingers kicked off their tour together in Raleigh, NC on Tuesday (10/30), and despite Hurricane Sandy, they've been moving on as planned, having played DC last night (10/31) and they'll be in Philly tonight (11/1). For last night's show, which was Halloween, John Vanderslice dressed up as Tigger (pictured above), and said that DC was chaos with "Halloween revelers, cops everywhere, and a massive fire in NE." And if this tweet is to be believed, we might see John's Tigger costume at the NYC area shows too.
The NYC area shows happen on Friday (11/2) at The Bell House and Sunday (11/4) at Maxwell's, both of which still appear to be on. Tickets for both the Bell House show and the Maxwell's show are still available.
John Vanderslice also joined Aimee Mann on stage at The Fillmore in San Francisco, when her tour brought her to that venue back in September. Aimee's tour was supposed to hit NYC for two shows with Ted Leo this week but Hurricane Sandy made like a thousand changes to their schedule. They ended up postponing their Bowery Ballroom show to a TBA date and played Music Hall of Williamsburg last night (more on that soon).
An updated list of John Vanderslice and Crooked Fingers dates is below.
New York City, our show with @geographermusic has been postponed due to lack of electricity. It is currently being rescheduled, date TBD. So sorry everyone, we'll keep you posted. Generator jokes welcome.Meanwhile, feel free to make jokes about the band in their halloween costumes (above photo taken at their 10/31 show at 9:30 Club in DC).
"I'm summoning all my party powers from above and below to channel them into your soul... Have the PARTIEST HALLOWEEN EVER!" - Andrew WK
Let's just forget (not really) about this hurricane thing for one second, and try to remember that today is also Halloween! What are you going to be? What were you for Hallowmeme? Need instructions on dressing as a Canadian Indie Musician? Are you dressing up your baby? And are you going to one of the limited NYC events still happening? Or will you just save your costume and hopefully wear it to the belated Halloween Parade that might happen next week.
As you can see in the photo above, BV photographer Chris La Putt (not actually him) found his costume and is going to be Instagram for Halloween (actually, he's stranded without phone, internet or power in Jersey City).
One CT resident got a Halloween-themed surprise when Sandy uncovered a human skeleton under a down tree. They think it was put there hundreds of years ago when the area was a burial ground.
Dum Dum Girls dressed up as nuns and brought out the Dum Dum Boys, last night.
LA band Deap Vally who are currently in Europe on tour with the Vaccines, show off their costumes....

Heliotropes at Cake Shop earlier this month (more by Amanda Hatfield)
As tends to happen around Halloween, we've been getting a handful of thematically appropriate cover songs surfacing today, and this one comes from Heliotropes, who offer their take on "I Walked With A Zombie" by Roky Erickson and the Aliens. They speed up the tempo, but it's otherwise a pretty straightforward take on Roky's swaggering original, and a real enjoyable one at that. Have a listen for yourself below, where you'll also find the song's cover art, designed by Steve Manale (who also did the Scott Pilgrim comic book).
Water line in the basement at Saint Vitus on Tuesday

Governor Cuomo is talking to press as we speak. The Daily News summarizes:
Gov. Cuomo announced that limited commuter rail service on Metro North and the Long Island Rail Road will begin at 2 p.m. today--and some subway service will follow tomorrow.NY1 says the subways most likely to come back soon are 4, 5, 2, 3 and F. Least likely: R, A, C, L, and 7. But they also point out things will be rerouted,
The subway service, he said, will be supplemented by a "bus bridge" from Brooklyn to Manhattan.
While he didn't specifically say which lines will be back up, he did explain that there will be no service in Manhattan below 34th Street because there is no power for that service.
Bus service is back up and running fully today in the city, he said.
Meanwhile, three of the seven East River tunnels have been pumped and are free of service.
More service will be up and running " on a day to day basis," he said.
Cuomo appealed for continued "patience and tolerance" from New Yorkers.
UPDATE, Pat Kiernan says Subways open Thursday:

5 train in Brooklyn, 42nd St Shuttle

Halloween Parade (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday evening that the annual Village Halloween Parade will be postponed from Wednesday due to the ongoing effects of Monday's storm. The parade's official website still just says "cancelled", but you can see what the mayor said above. Stay tuned for updates.
It was announced earlier in the day that the parade, now in its 39th year, would be canceled. However, Bloomberg's statement raised the possibility that the parade would be moved to next week.
"Unfortunately we just cannot spare the manpower from the NYPD and other city agencies to host the annual Greenwich Village Halloween Parade, so we are postponing it to a later date sometime next week," the mayor said. "We'll work tomorrow and figure out what date makes sense given the resources the city has."
The parade route goes through the West Village and Chelsea, two neighborhoods that are largely without power due to Monday's massive storm.
So far, the 2012 New York City Marathon, scheduled for this Sunday, is still going on as planned.
Union Pool this AM. Sign reads "Closed! Oh, Sandy!" (photo by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Are you going stir crazy? Most shows are cancelled, but there are some options in Williamsburg tonight. As of 1PM today (10/30), Union Pool has been open for business. 2011 NYC Halloween Parade (more by Chris La Putt)
The really wanted to keep it happening, but...
For the first time in our 39 year history, the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management and the NYPD have CANCELLED the Parade. We had a feeling this would happen. Still a bummer.
We hope that everyone who would have come to the Parade is safe and that those who can volunteer to help out at one of the Emergency Outreach Centers near you.
We will surely miss all of you!
The Park Slope Halloween parade is also cancelled.
As mentioned earlier today, the famous, annual Village Halloween Parade seems determined to happen, but is "awaiting the Mayor's Decision...". Meanwhile, the less famous, more family oriented parade that happens in Park Slope each year (it starts right near the currently damaged Bar 4), is officially not happening...
NYPD and NYC Department of Sanitation are focusing on clean-up and safety efforts, post Hurricane Sandy. Therefore, the annual Park Slope Civic Council Halloween Parade will be cancelled this year. The parade WILL NOT be rescheduled.Oh well. More pictures like the above, by Chris La Putt, HERE.
Best wishes for your safety during the post storm clean-up, and we'll hope for better luck with the weather next year.
Even the hardest partier in the world was forced to succumb to Hurricane Sandy. The Andrew WK Halloween show at Autumn Bowl, which was supposed to go down this Wednesday (10/31), has been added to the long list of cancelled shows this week due to the natural disaster that we've been hit with. As mentioned in the tweets above, tickets can be refunded where purchased. And it looks like Andrew will still be partying wherever he is on Wednesday night, so if you were gonna go to the show, you should find a way to do the same. It's what Andrew WK would want.
A video of Andrew WK the weatherman below...
2011 Halloween Parade (more by Chris La Putt)
It will definitely not be the happiest Halloween New York has ever seen, thanks to Hurricane Sandy, and it's still unclear what Halloween shows are still happening, but we were also wondering about this year's NYC Halloween Parade. Official word seems like it's still on for now. From the @NYCHalloween twitter:
Scion is hosting a free-with-RSVP "Open Mic" show at Public Assembly on Wednesday, 11/7 with DJ Getlive!, Action Bronson, and Harry Fraud. Harry Fraud and friends will be performing the complete Cigarette Boats EP. Unclear if one of those "friends" will be Curren$y who is a crucial piece of that EP and who plays Best Buy Theater with Mimosa two days later.
Due to complications from Hurricane Sandy, Haunted Hill will be POSTPONED. Hang on to your tickets, as a new date will be announced very shortly.Updated Cypress Hill dates are listed below...
The in-store meet and greet at Gotham Smoke Shop in Huntington Station, NY on October 30th will also be rescheduled for a later date. More to follow soon.
Dita Von Teese is scheduled to play four Halloween-time burlesque shows at NYC's Gramercy Theater on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday...
Latest Strip Strip Hooray NYC update: if you have tickets for the Oct 30th show, that may be moved to Thursday, November 1st to a late night 2nd show. More updates coming, but this looks like our best solution due to the storm and transportation issues for ticket holders. I will confirm this sometime tomorrow.Tomorrow is today. We're standing by. Meanwhile, check ticketmaster for tickets.
UPDATE: Tuesday's show is cancelled, and a 2nd show on Thursday has been added. Dita says:
Like other NYC shows, tomorrow's StripStripHooray! show is cancelled. Tix will be refunded & we are adding a 2nd show on Thursday night, so I will be posting that link soon. Unfortunately, you must buy new tickets for that show. More info to come, stay tuned & stay safe! VIP Meet & Greet ticketholders will be contacted individually by phone. And then she said:
Http://Teese.us/4x to buy tickets for Thursday's makeup show.---
I know that many of you will find reasons to be angry about the cancellation, but all the shows are closing, plus we have no choice because there is no power and no transportation for people trying to make it to the shows. (Not to mention no tech rehearsals!) The good news is that right now, you can get good tickets for the Tuesday show if you act fast...plus it's our last show, so it will be the wildest one! We promise!
Thank you for understanding.
Meanwhile, I am here playing UNO by candlelight at my hotel with friends.
Looking forward to basking in the pink spotlight!
Andrew WK at Webster Hall in April (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Assuming we all survive the apocalypse, Halloween is Wednesday (10/31), and as you know there are plenty of ways to celebrate in NYC. Another recently announced option is the Halloween Hellraiser at new Greenpoint warehouse Autumn Bowl with professional partier Andrew WK. He'll be joined by Creep (DJ), Ice Balloons, DJ Dog Dick, and more artists TBA. Tickets for the show are on sale now. A gif flyer for the show is below. UPDATE: Halloween show cancelled.
Andrew WK has been keeping busy in NYC the last couple of weeks, having just taken part in a bunch of CMJ events and appeared as one of the guests at Petty Fest. He's also got two events happening close to NYC right before New Year's Eve. He plays Stanhope House on December 29 in NJ (tickets) and Ollie's Point on December 30 in Long Island (tickets). Maybe he'll add a show happening on New Year's Eve in NYC?
Meanwhile, Autumn Bowl has been hosting few but solid shows since opening. Maybe you caught Zomby (10/18) or Kyp Malone (10/20) there during CMJ? Or this past Friday when Four Tet and Jamie xx DJed back to back? If you've been to the new venue, how is it?
A list of all Andrew WK dates, the Halloween show flyer, and a recent live video are below.

Every October I press "record" and lay down an improvised live unedited mix of some of the most supremely spooky goofy stuff ever buried into wax. 100% culled from the secret history of haunted novelties, most of the recordings here, like the mummies of their lyrics, are long forgotten relics. But unlike the mummified pharoahs, these were all unknowns in their day. You can help give these monsters the justice that they deserve by bringing them back to life with me! Download this onto your iPod or iPad or iPhone or i-whatever! Play it at your work or Halloween party or laptop DJ gig! I don't know if anyone's gonna be scared but your unique party music will be the envy of your family, friends, and neighbors! Not really... But one can't live on "The Monster Mash" and "Thriller" alone! Also, If you're a fan of these lost artifacts of our greatest national holiday, escape from your dwellings so we can give these undead exquisite corpses a new pulse on the dance floor! I'll be serving hours of these dark delicacies and dozens more at The Haunted Hop at NYC's Brooklyn Bowl on October 27 and New Orleans' Siberia on October 30. Then these little monsters will all scurry back into their tombs.Download above. Stream below....
