Hurricane Sandy

Are you going stir crazy? Most shows are cancelled, but there are some options in Williamsburg tonight. As of 1PM today (10/30), Union Pool has been open for business. So head on over but remember, only one per bathroom due to excess "debauchery". Jonathan Toubin just tweeted, "@UnionPool & i just decided to throw a FREE party tonight to bring everybody together & make them feel better. i'll turning the soul stuff." UPDATE: here's more info.

Halloween (10/31) is on and poppin' for Union Pool as well, when the venue will host a covers show by the Union Ghouls, that features members of Polygamist, Mutant, Supremacy, Sun Ladders, Weeknight, Reni Lane, Public School, Riverwilde, and Gentlemen. They'll be performing songs by Black Sabbath, Nancy Sinatra, Wire, Suicide, AC/DC, and Celtic Frost. The party is free and starts at 8:30 PM.

Elsewhere in Williamsburg, Glasslands will also be open tonight (10/30) for "The World's Premier Alternative Rock Band Kerosene Hat" that features Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson and members of MGMT, Amazing Baby, Suckers and more is still a go. Heems from Das Racist will DJ. Doors are at 9 PM, $7 to get in.

Around the corner at Death by Audio, they're also doing a Halloween cover bands show that is still on that features:

Sleepies (w/mem of Eula) as The Pixies
Mr Dream as Siouxsie and the Banshees
Acid Problem as The Ramones
Heavens Gate as Joy Division
The Go-Guh's (mems Moonmen on the Moon, Man, Paper Fleet, I'm With Cupid) as The Go-Go's
$5 with costume, $7 without.

Cameo will be open on Halloween too, hosting both Big Terrific comedy show on Wednesday early, and then later The Hold Steady's Dan Neustadt and some of his friends will be covering Michael Jackson's Thriller in its entirety, part of his "Off the Record" series.

Big Freedia at Brooklyn Bowl is also still happening as of this post. Same with World Inferno Friendship Society at Warsaw,

UPDATE: The parade still may happen!

2011 NYC Halloween Parade (more by Chris La Putt)

The really wanted to keep it happening, but...

For the first time in our 39 year history, the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management and the NYPD have CANCELLED the Parade.

We hope that everyone who would have come to the Parade is safe and that those who can volunteer to help out at one of the Emergency Outreach Centers near you.

We will surely miss all of you!

Hallelujah Halloween!

We had a feeling this would happen. Still a bummer.

The Park Slope Halloween parade is also cancelled.

UPDATE: The Village Halloween Parade is now cancelled too.

Halloween

As mentioned earlier today, the famous, annual Village Halloween Parade seems determined to happen, but is "awaiting the Mayor's Decision...". Meanwhile, the less famous, more family oriented parade that happens in Park Slope each year (it starts right near the currently damaged Bar 4), is officially not happening...

NYPD and NYC Department of Sanitation are focusing on clean-up and safety efforts, post Hurricane Sandy. Therefore, the annual Park Slope Civic Council Halloween Parade will be cancelled this year. The parade WILL NOT be rescheduled.

Best wishes for your safety during the post storm clean-up, and we'll hope for better luck with the weather next year.

Oh well. More pictures like the above, by Chris La Putt, HERE.

UPDATE: The Village Halloween Parade is now cancelled too.

Andrew WK
Andrew WK

Even the hardest partier in the world was forced to succumb to Hurricane Sandy. The Andrew WK Halloween show at Autumn Bowl, which was supposed to go down this Wednesday (10/31), has been added to the long list of cancelled shows this week due to the natural disaster that we've been hit with. As mentioned in the tweets above, tickets can be refunded where purchased. And it looks like Andrew will still be partying wherever he is on Wednesday night, so if you were gonna go to the show, you should find a way to do the same. It's what Andrew WK would want.

A video of Andrew WK the weatherman below...

UPDATE: The Village Halloween Parade is now cancelled too.

2011 Halloween Parade (more by Chris La Putt)

It will definitely not be the happiest Halloween New York has ever seen, thanks to Hurricane Sandy, and it's still unclear what Halloween shows are still happening, but we were also wondering about this year's NYC Halloween Parade. Official word seems like it's still on for now. From the @NYCHalloween twitter:

Look for more Halloween updates soon. Check out pictures from last year's NYC Halloween Parade here. If the guy above used his same costume this year, he might be the only working subway in NYC.

UPDATE: The Village Halloween Parade is now cancelled too.

Cypress Hill

Scion is hosting a free-with-RSVP "Open Mic" show at Public Assembly on Wednesday, 11/7 with DJ Getlive!, Action Bronson, and Harry Fraud. Harry Fraud and friends will be performing the complete Cigarette Boats EP. Unclear if one of those "friends" will be Curren$y who is a crucial piece of that EP and who plays Best Buy Theater with Mimosa two days later.

Speaking of Action Bronson & Best Buy Theater, Hurricane Sandy has another casualty. Cypress Hill, who were scheduled to play there with Bronson on 10/30, report:

Due to complications from Hurricane Sandy, Haunted Hill will be POSTPONED. Hang on to your tickets, as a new date will be announced very shortly.

The in-store meet and greet at Gotham Smoke Shop in Huntington Station, NY on October 30th will also be rescheduled for a later date. More to follow soon.

Updated Cypress Hill dates are listed below...

Dita Von Teese

Dita Von Teese is scheduled to play four Halloween-time burlesque shows at NYC's Gramercy Theater on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday...

Latest Strip Strip Hooray NYC update: if you have tickets for the Oct 30th show, that may be moved to Thursday, November 1st to a late night 2nd show. More updates coming, but this looks like our best solution due to the storm and transportation issues for ticket holders. I will confirm this sometime tomorrow.
xx
Tomorrow is today. We're standing by. Meanwhile, check ticketmaster for tickets.

UPDATE: Tuesday's show is cancelled, and a 2nd show on Thursday has been added. Dita says:

Like other NYC shows, tomorrow's StripStripHooray! show is cancelled. Tix will be refunded & we are adding a 2nd show on Thursday night, so I will be posting that link soon. Unfortunately, you must buy new tickets for that show. More info to come, stay tuned & stay safe! VIP Meet & Greet ticketholders will be contacted individually by phone.
And then she said:
Http://Teese.us/4x to buy tickets for Thursday's makeup show.
I know that many of you will find reasons to be angry about the cancellation, but all the shows are closing, plus we have no choice because there is no power and no transportation for people trying to make it to the shows. (Not to mention no tech rehearsals!) The good news is that right now, you can get good tickets for the Tuesday show if you act fast...plus it's our last show, so it will be the wildest one! We promise!
Thank you for understanding.
Meanwhile, I am here playing UNO by candlelight at my hotel with friends.
Looking forward to basking in the pink spotlight!
Xx

Andrew WK at Webster Hall in April (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Andrew WK

Assuming we all survive the apocalypse, Halloween is Wednesday (10/31), and as you know there are plenty of ways to celebrate in NYC. Another recently announced option is the Halloween Hellraiser at new Greenpoint warehouse Autumn Bowl with professional partier Andrew WK. He'll be joined by Creep (DJ), Ice Balloons, DJ Dog Dick, and more artists TBA. Tickets for the show are on sale now. A gif flyer for the show is below. UPDATE: Halloween show cancelled.

Andrew WK has been keeping busy in NYC the last couple of weeks, having just taken part in a bunch of CMJ events and appeared as one of the guests at Petty Fest. He's also got two events happening close to NYC right before New Year's Eve. He plays Stanhope House on December 29 in NJ (tickets) and Ollie's Point on December 30 in Long Island (tickets). Maybe he'll add a show happening on New Year's Eve in NYC?

Meanwhile, Autumn Bowl has been hosting few but solid shows since opening. Maybe you caught Zomby (10/18) or Kyp Malone (10/20) there during CMJ? Or this past Friday when Four Tet and Jamie xx DJed back to back? If you've been to the new venue, how is it?

A list of all Andrew WK dates, the Halloween show flyer, and a recent live video are below.

Toubin

Mr. Jonathan Toubin says:

Every October I press "record" and lay down an improvised live unedited mix of some of the most supremely spooky goofy stuff ever buried into wax. 100% culled from the secret history of haunted novelties, most of the recordings here, like the mummies of their lyrics, are long forgotten relics. But unlike the mummified pharoahs, these were all unknowns in their day. You can help give these monsters the justice that they deserve by bringing them back to life with me! Download this onto your iPod or iPad or iPhone or i-whatever! Play it at your work or Halloween party or laptop DJ gig! I don't know if anyone's gonna be scared but your unique party music will be the envy of your family, friends, and neighbors! Not really... But one can't live on "The Monster Mash" and "Thriller" alone! Also, If you're a fan of these lost artifacts of our greatest national holiday, escape from your dwellings so we can give these undead exquisite corpses a new pulse on the dance floor! I'll be serving hours of these dark delicacies and dozens more at The Haunted Hop at NYC's Brooklyn Bowl on October 27 and New Orleans' Siberia on October 30. Then these little monsters will all scurry back into their tombs.

Love and candy corns,
Jonathan Toubin

Acid Problem at Tommy's Tavern, August 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Acid Problem

Acid Problem's noisy brand of hardcore tips its hat to 80s punk, squealing Sub-Pop/Am-Rep and punk favorites like the late-great Cold Sweat, Kim Phuc or Slices. Live, the NYC crew is a force to be reckoned with and their new self-titled EP ain't no slouch either. Check it out in full below. Limited to 311 copies (clearly a nod to the greatest band ever) (not really) on vinyl, pick up yours via 16oh Records.

Acid Problem have a single show as themselves (I'll explain in a minute) on their calendar so far, at Da Bath Haus in New Brunswick on October 13. There they'll be joined by Brain Slug, Dipers and Ugly Parts. They'll also appear as the Ramones at Death By Audio as part of their Halloween covers show on 10/31. If you can't make it out to NJ, check out their recent live appearance on WFMU as an indicator of their live show, and look below for some video as well.

Live video and that stream is below.

Dita Von Teese

Most people get dressed up for Halloween but burlesque superstar Dita Von Teese will be taking it off for a three night stand at Gramercy Theatre on Oct. 30 - Nov. 1. The show, titled "Burlesque: Strip Strip Hooray" is being MC'd by Murray Hill and also features Dirty Martini, Catherine D'Lish, Selene Luna, Perle Noire and Monsieur Romeo. Tickets are on sale now.

If you're a Top Chef fan, you may have seen Dita (who turns 40 on Friday [9/28]) recently on Top Chef Masters where she turned host Curtis Stone into a giggling schoolboy and displayed serious food knowledge as well. You can watch that clip below.

Meanwhile, for all your burlesque needs, head to the Bell House for the 10th Annual New York Burlesque Festival starting tonight (9/27).

Big Freedia at Santos in May (more by Chris La Putt)
Big Freedia

Big Freedia has been on a tour that was supposed to come to NYC for a Rocks Off cruise in late August, but that show was cancelled due to weather. She's since announced that she'll return to NYC for a show on Halloween (10/31) at Brooklyn Bowl. Tickets for that show are available.

The Big Freedia show is one of many Halloween options in NYC, many of which we've already told you about (like Dita Von Teese who we also mentioned today). Some others that we haven't include the Halloween covers show at Death by Audio with Sleepies (as the Pixies), Mr. Dream (as ?), Acid Problem (as the Ramones), Heaven's Gate (as Joy Division), and more TBA; and the 'Monster Mash 7 Halloween Party' at Glasslands, which is being presented by New York Night Train (Jonathan Toubin's NYC dance party) and Alana Amram with DJ Naughty Panther. According to the event page, the "musical guests" are "Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Abba, 60s Girl Group, 90s Medley, The Cramps, New Order, and more." Tickets for that show are available. Any other good ones that we missed?

A list of all Big Freedia dates is below...

Action Bronson at Music Hall of Williamsburg in August (more by Ryan Muir)
Action Bronson

In late August, Action Bronson tweeted, "LA is gonna have a new resident soon," presumably implying that the Queens rapper has plans to move out west. We haven't heard anything about it since, but if he is leaving (or did already), he's still giving NYC plenty of chances to see him. On Friday (9/28) he's playing a Bespoke Group-presented and Hyundai-sponsored show in NYC at Chelsea Market (75 9th Ave) with RL Grime. RSVP is open. Doors are at 9 PM for this 21+ show.

Action Bronson, who just played Beauty Ballroom in Austin, will also be the opening at Cypress HIll's annual "Haunted Hill" show, which happens at Best Buy Theater on October 30, the day before Halloween. Tickets for that show are available. Other Halloween options in NYC include Wold Inferno Friendship Society at Warsaw, Smashing Pumpkins at Barclays Center, and The Misfits annual Halloween show at Highline Ballroom.

In other Action Bronson news, he recently dropped a new Party Supplies-produced song called "It's Me," which you can download above, or stream below, along with a list of all dates.

Smashing Pumpkins at iHeartRadio Theater in June (more by Theo Wargo)
Smashing Pumpkins

Back in June, The Smashing Pumpkins released Oceania, their first full length album since 2007 and first with the band's current lineup of Billy Corgan, Jeff Schroeder, Nicole Fiorentino, and Mike Byrne. Around that time they also played a few shows in support of it including the tiny iHeartRadio Theater show in NYC. Now they're set to take the album to much larger venues on 'The Oceania Tour,' where they'll be performing material from the "new album Oceania as well as their classic songs." The Canadian leg of the tour has already been announced, and the band have revealed the US cities (but not venues and dates) that they'll hit as well. A full list of venues and dates is to come, but meanwhile, we know that they'll be in NYC for a show at Brooklyn's new Barclays Center on Halloween (10/31). (We'll leave you to make holiday/name-appropriate jokes.) Tickets for that show go on sale Friday, August 31 at 10 AM, and Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets on Monday, August 27 through the Citi Private Pass website. VIP tickets will also be available at the Smashing Pumpkins website. A list of all dates and US cities (including Camden, NJ, where the Susquehanna Bank Center is located) is below.

In other news, after recently calling out Radiohead, Billy Corgan took to an interview with PhilStar to call out some of his old favorites, Soundgarden (and of course another mention of Pavement). Billy said:

There are those bands that are essentially coming back only to make money -- playing their old albums, and maybe somewhere in the back of their minds they're thinking there might be a future.

I am not in that business, obviously. I condemn anybody who's in that business but doesn't admit (he's) in that business. When Soundgarden came back and they just played their old songs, great. I was a fan of Soundgarden, but call it for what it is. They're just out there to have one more round at the till; same with Pavement and these other bands.

In related news, ex-Smashing Pumpkin James Iha will be going on his own tour this fall and coming to the NYC area on October 5 at Mercury Lounge (tickets) and October 6 at Maxwell's (tickets).

A list of all Smashing Pumpkins dates and a video of the band playing "The Celestials" at iHeartRadio Theater in June are below.

Moogfest

"One needn't be among the electronic music faithful to take away positive feelings toward Moogfest, Asheville's yearly electronic mecca. Since migrating from a single-night event in New York City to what was arguably the cradle of electronic music innovation after being settled by Robert Moog, Moogfest has been as edifying as it is entertaining. Few festivals defy their attendees to completely reassess how they listen to music in the way that a weekend at Moogfest does. The gray matter-frying, booty-shaking synth jams raged until early morning all across downtown Asheville, but oftentimes the lessons in musical futurology were just as fulfilling." [Yes Weekly]
Moog Fest 2011 continued on Saturday, 10/29, in North Carolina, this time featuring appearances from Crystal Castles, The Flaming Lips, Amon Tobin, Suicide, Battles, St. Vincent, Toro Y Moi, and many, many others, but no YACHT, who were forced to cancel their appearance due to flight problems in Mexico. Pictures from some of the artists on that second day are in this post (first photo set HERE), and continue below...

The Black Angels

"We got our name from the Velvet Underground song "The Black Angels Death Song." As far as touring with bands with "black" in their names- The Black Keys and Black Rebel Motercycle Club being the two off the top of my head, it was really amazing to be able to tour with those bands. We'd always been big fans of them and when the opportunity presented itself to tour with these bands for the first time, I was like "wow, awesome." Obviously with Black Mountain as well. It wasn't until our first tour was booked that I'm like "man, we keep playing with these Black bands."" - Alex Maas
No black tourmates this time around, but the The Black Angels did have a nice mix of openers over the course of their 3-day Halloween run at Music Hall of Williamsburg which came to end on Monday night (10/31). We have pictures from the second show (10/30), which was with Spindrift and Dead Meadow (other Brooklyn show openers included Exit Music, Golden Animals and Psychic Ills). Spindrift dressed up that night, but the headliners saved their costumes for Halloween.

2011 NYC Halloween Parade

"What's happened to Halloween? The celebration of all things sugary has turned sour: dentists are colluding to pay kids for their candy. GreatSchools, an education website, has gone so far as to proclaim trick-or-treating booty an "unmitigated disaster for parents trying to protect their children from OD'ing" on sugar, and offers parents tricks for handling the "upcoming tsunami of sucrose."

In online forums, moms trade tips for keeping sweets away from kids without their cluing in. One mom says she partners with neighbors to supply trick-or-treaters with only pre-approved (read: yucky) treats. Other parents are more openly Scroogey: one mom torments her kids by forcing them to hand out the candy they collected earlier in the evening to trick-or-treaters who show up later on their doorstep. Yet another mother invokes the "Great Pumpkin," who swoops down tooth-fairy-style, removing Milk Duds and leaving toys and books in their stead.

I'm unclear what's so great about this. My kids, at least, have no shortage of toys or books; they do have a dearth of candy, though, which is precisely why Halloween is so great. It's specifically because we don't let them gorge on Twix bars the rest of the year that their spooky stash is so special." [TIME]

"Spent Bruar Falls' last set spilling whiskey and untangling toilet paper from around my head. Clouder, appropriately spooky, killed it." - Sydney Brownstone

Goodbye @BruarFalls I'll miss you. Parting shot. (Bill Pearis)

2011 NYC Halloween Parade

The streets crawled with spooky sights, from floating eyeballs and skeletons to Occupy Wall Street protesters dressed as budget axes, for the annual Halloween parade Monday.

As in years past, current events made their presence felt, as a contingent of about 200 anti-Wall Street demonstrators joined the 39th annual Village Halloween Parade wearing costumes that reflected their protest against economic inequality. Zombies and pink slips were some of their other themes. They carried signs that said "stop the vampire economy" and "foreclosure is scary." [CBS]
