Brooklyn duo Matt and Kim, dressed as Andy Warhol and his It Girl Edie Sedgewick, took the stage to Fat Joe shouting "Where Brooklyn At?" over the sinister beat of his hit "Lean Back", while they threw out candy to the crowd before beginning a fun-filled set that included their infectious smash hit "Daylight" and short nods to Europe's "Final Countdown" and Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll Part Two."Weezer maybe had the bug costumes left over from a taping for on an upcoming episode of Yo Gabba Gabba!. More pictures from their Saturday night Halloween show at Hammerstein Ballrooom, including many crowd members in costume, below...
As for Weezer, they were dressed in various insect costumes, which vocalist Rivers Cuomo had audience members remove for himself his fellow band members while they continued to play "Undone (The Sweater Song)" early on in the set. The sold out house danced along to all the bouncy music Weezer had to offer (literally bouncy, as the band had a trampoline set up on stage), including hits such as "Perfect Situation", "Island in the Sun", "Surf Wax America", "Buddy Holly", "Pork and Beans", "Dope Nose", and new ones "I Can't Stop Partying", and "I'm Your Daddy." They also played an absolutely awesome cover of MGMT's "Kids", which took a detour to Lady GaGa's massive hit "Poker Face" in the middle. But as usual, it was "My Name is Jonas" that brought the house down.
The biggest surprise of the night, other than the cool cover, was an appearance by Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester. The TV star came out in nude pants splashed with random bursts of color and a 60's style beehive to sing a duet with vocalist Rivers Cuomo on "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To." She sang very well, and later Tweeted that Rivers was "perfection in a bottle." [Examiner]

HR of Bad Brains / security on stage during Bad Brains
"...At this point, Bad Brains were playing, and it was clear more trouble was in store, when some guy in some sort of medeival doungeon master getup tried to crowd surf during "Attitude," which inspired the security to storm the stage twelve or so deep, evacuate the Bad Brains, and stand like some sort of musclehead Stonehenge along the end of the stage, while their leader informed everyone, "This is not a concert, this is a party. Have a seat." Of course, the floor was covered in horrible grime and broken glass, but whatever. That is one small passage from a very long rant that Patrick Stickles of Titus Andronicus posted to his blog after an unpleasant experience at the Vice Halloween party on Saturday night. He goes on to talk about being kicked out of the show before getting to play, the Vice staff barely being able to get him back in, and him calling the cops!!! ("I made my second-ever call to 911"). Most of all he seems mad at the hired security company and encourages Vice to sue them.
Poor Bad Brains. Or is it? With all due respect to these legends of hardcore and reformed homophobes, I don't know if I can ever recall a more phoned-in performance in all my life. This should come as no surprise, based on the ubiquity of weed stench emenating from their dressing room, and the equally ever-present site of all-time-greatest-hardcore-singer front-runner HR sitting motionless on a couch (seriously - this hardcore legend did not move an inch during the whole evening!). I mean, whatever floats yr boat, HR, more power to you, but for this Greatest Hardcore Band Ever to get onstage and have their singer remain motionless in body and completely monotone in voice... I dunno, it is just not how I imagined it might be. Disappointing at best.
Well, this whole scene was fucked, clearly, and my ladyfriend was getting more and more disturbed by the assholery on display (or sexual harassment, as she would call it, and perhaps rightly so) and the constant picture-taking by stangers, that she had to go home and try and live like a reasonable person. I wish I could have followed her, but as will become a theme throughout this sad tale, I really needed the money. So, I escorted her out of the building and out of the hellish nightmare that was this party, and I was glad to see her moving towards a more peaceful and decent evening..." [Patrick Stickles of Titus Andronicus]
He makes the whole night sound really horrible though - like really bad, which wasn't actually my own experience. I thought it was fun, though I wasn't kicked out. Security had a major presence, but what do you expect when you invite thousands of people to come drink for free in a giant warehouse in the middle of Williamsburg? My only discomfort was the bathroom lines. I almost peed my pants waiting for one of the porta potties!
Titus Andronicus performed as Weezer (a band that also played a Halloween show in NYC that night). They went on after Bad Brains (who played after Jesus Lizard) which was kind of weird because not that many people stuck around after the two headliners finished. Yes, HR of Bad Brains is a weirdo now and Bad Brains live are just kind of weird, but that's old news. Thanks to an enthusiastic crowd, the Bad Brains show was actually one of the craziest I can remember (security being weirdos for a minute aside). Read Patrick's whole rant HERE. Blackwolf the Dragonmaster
"In a Halloween prank turned tragic, an MTA bus driver struck and killed a Bronx man who had just thrown a heavy object at the vehicle, shattering part of the front window, police said.Blackwolf the Dragonmaster, Itsi Atkins, lots of Michael Jacksons and Lady Gagas, and many other NYC characters showed up to the Halloween Parade on Saturday. Pictures HERE, HERE, and one final set, below...
The incident raised the alarm of transit employees who were already on watch against increasingly violent pranksters on Halloween. Earlier in the day, a windshield on another Bronx bus was shattered after it was allegedly struck with a bullet from a BB gun." [AMNY]

It was fright night in Greenwich Village Saturday as thousands of Halloween revelers paraded up Sixth Avenue dressed to thrill.More pictures from the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade below...
Creepy ghouls, spooky ghosts and a multitude of Michael Jackson-lookalikes came out of the shadows under the cover of darkness, and even the pouring rain couldn't dampen their spirits.
"I think tonight is one of the best nights ever," said Angel Estrella, 38, from Bedford Park, in the Bronx, who was dressed as the Wizard of Oz's wicked witch of the West.
"I don't think it's been this packed, despite the weather.
"I'm soaked but I feel great."
Several groups of up to 50 people performed dance routines from Michael Jackson's Thriller and Beat It videos in tribute to the King of Pop. [Daily News]

Speaking of partying like it's 1994 on Halloween, Scotto is bringing back Maskarave to a secret not-Limelight mid-town church location on Halloween night. Ravers, buy advanced tickets at your own risk. That is, I give it a 50% chance of actually happening. Flyer below.
Golden Triangle @ the Sub Pop/Hardly Art CMJ show (more by Jake Forney)
SATURDAY OCTOBER 31STThat is the description of a show happening at Secret Project Robot on Saturday night (Halloween), and speaking of BBQ, Mark Sultan (BBQ) is playing earlier at the Bell House that same night with King Khan. hmmm. The pair also play tonight (10/30) at Bowery Ballroom. The Junior Boys also play a show at The Bell House on Halloween.

Opening the KK/BBQ Bell House and Bowery shows are Dum Dum Girls who played Bruar Falls on Monday after a two-show Saturday at CMJ, the last of which was the Sub Pop / Hardly Art show that Golden Triangle also played with Obits, Pissed Jeans and others.
Obits also plays a show tonight (10/30). They open for Pinback at Irving Plaza.
Pissed Jeans play tonight too. They headline a very cheap show at Le Poisson Rouge.

Hopefully Cymbals Eat Guitars can rest after this weekend and before they leave for Europe (they kick off an overseas tour by opening or Wilco in Hamburg on November 7th). Frontman Joseph D'Agostino has been sick since CMJ, and the band canceled one in-store appearance at Sound Fix Records because of it. Last night (10/29) they made up that show in the store's new North 11th Street location, but Joseph was still really sick. Pictures above and below.
Oh Halloween, the band is playing a Halloween party on Steuben Street in Brooklyn (actually they may have canceled). More Sound Fix pictures and all dates below...
Cold War Kids are headlining Terminal 5 on January 29th. Tickets are on sale (@ noon).
Tonight's (10/30) Pissed Jeans show @ Le Poisson Rouge is only $2 with an NYU ID.
The Yeasayer and Tanlines show at The Guggenheim is much more expensive.
The Very Best were scheduled to play some CMJ shows, but plans changed last minute due to travel complications. Those complications must have been worked out because on October 31st Flavorpill is hosting "Gods and Heroes", a show with The Very Best, Bajah + The Dry Eye Crew, DJ Stretch Armstrong, Subswara, Small Change and more at Brooklyn Masonic Temple. Tickets are on sale. Open bar all night. The money is going to charity. Flyer below...
Tim Fite is releasing Watch Your Mouth, the third album of his Halloween trilogy (for free) on October 31. He's also playing that night with The Woes and Via Audio at Union Hall. Tickets are still on sale. More info on the album and show below...
Danzig O' Lantern (joebeone)
It's been a long time since Chuck Biscuits played drums for Danzig, but his NOT-sad passing reminded me that Danzig has some shows coming up. Not only is he one of the headliners at this year's Fun Fun Fun Fest (coming very soon to Austin), but he'll be back in his home state for a show on the day after Christmas (when he'll probably be visiting mom). Tickets are on sale now for the show at Starland Ballroom.
One of the openers at the NJ show will be Doyle's band Gorgeous Frankenstein which means maybe Glenn and Doyle will do some Misfits songs together again. The other opener is Seventh Void whose members include Kenny Hickey (guitar) and Johnny Kelly (drums) of Type O Negative. They both also usually play in Danzig's band so I'm guessing that will be the case at this show too.
Seventh Void are currently on tour with Type O Negative, and opened the shows at Starland Ballroom and Nokia Theatre earlier this month. Seventh Void play their own show at Trash Bar in Brooklyn on November 21st.
According to eMusic, the above picture is John McCauley of Deer Tick as a California Raisin for Halloween. They also collected pictures from Bon Iver, Black Mountain, Dawes, The Black Lips, and many others.
This year Deer Tick is going to be The Sex Pistols for Halloween, a fine choice of activities for that evening, though I may not be able to pass up partying like it's 1994 with Bad Brains & The Jesus Lizard instead. If I do, I'll definitely regret missing the Mt. Eerie show at Market Hotel. And hopefully I'll make it to at least some of the parade.
What are you doing on Halloween? What are you wearing?

I know many have been waiting anxiously for details on how to get in to the VICE 15th year anniversary party featuring live performances by Bad Brains and The Jesus Lizard. Well, now they're running a contest. Flyer and more details below...

Deer Tick @ Prospect Park in August (more by Chris La Putt)
This Halloween Deer Tick will be performing at Brooklyn Bowl and like you (presumably) they'll be going in costume - the band will perform as the Sex Pistols for the night. Joining them will be a "special guest" band playing the songs of Sonic Youth and Dangerous: All Metal Tribute to Michael Jackson. There's free admission with a costume. Otherwise it's $5, and tickets are on sale at noon.
Deer Tick play the Partisan Records tour, which kicked off Monday, Oct. 19th and includes a CMJ showcase at Bowery Ballroom on October 22nd (now sold out unless you have a CMJ badge). The entire Partisan Records roster (minus one) are along for the ride. That includes Chris Denny & the Natives, who are playing the BV day party at Pianos earlier that day (Denny just interviewed Ben Nichols of Lucero right here), Holy Sons (Emil Amos of Om), Dolorean (not to be confused with Delorean) and (on half the dates including NYC) Paleo. All of those acts are included on the free sampler from the label posted above.
All tour dates, a Halloween show poster, the sampler tracklist and updated Deer Tick tour dates are below...
Bad Brains @ Irving Plaza in 2008 (more by Tim Griffin)
"VICE magazine, which is still not only fully independent but is also flourishing while the dinosaurs that surround us slowly suffocate in the tar pits of their financial ruin, is throwing a massive Halloween birthday party to celebrate our 15th anniversary. There will be two floors of chaotic nostalgia, scary punk bands, full-on rave DJs, a skate ramp, glow sticks, grunge, big pants, gangsta rap, marijuana-scented flannel, and serious slacker vibes. Plus it's on Halloween, so if you don't show up dressed as some sort of a cultural cliché from 1994, you probably won't get in."That's the official description of VICE's upcoming Halloween bash in honor of their 15th birthday. And like their CMJ parties, it's happening in Brooklyn (though not in the same neighborhood). No other details have been released at the moment, but I just heard that, not only will it be a free/RSVP thing, and that The Jesus Lizard AND Bad Brains are both on the bill (theme of the night: 1994). More details TBA, and I think they will include even more performers.
One band who I'd imagine VICE would want to put on the show is one they recently added to their record label roster, The Almighty Defenders who are made up of the combined Black Lips and King Khan and BBQ. Conveniently, King Khan & BBQ do in fact have an early Brooklyn show scheduled on that very (Halloween) night. Whether they get added to the Vice show or not, I have no idea, but the "supergroup" is playing a free show in NYC even sooner for Topman during CMJ (and a they have a show at Maxwell's the same CMJ week).
The Dead Milkmen are playing Philly on Halloween. The Dead Milkmen and Bad Brains co-headlined Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin last year. This year The Jesus Lizard is one of the headliners of the Texas fest.
The new issue of VICE, pictured above with Chloe Sevigny on the cover, can be read on their website.

Pissed Jeans at MHOW (more by Chloe Rice)
Including their recent appearance at WFMU Fest, Pissed Jeans have booked three shows in NYC in the month of October. The first is part of the Sub Pop/Hardly Art showcase at Mercury Lounge which will include a stellar lineup of Male Bonding, Obits, Golden Triangle, The Dutchess & The Duke, Moondoggies, Dum Dum Girls, and Unnatural Helpers. $12 to get in and there are no advance tickets.
Compare/contrast that lineup, which covers a wide spectrum of styles, with Pissed Jeans' show on 10/30 at Le Poisson Rouge billed as "NYU Halloween Punk/Hardcore Fest". Pissed Jeans will headline with support coming from Awesome Color, Drunkdriver, My Mind, The Sleepies, and Ex-Wife. Tickets are only $2 if you have an NYU ID and $5 without and, um, costumes are highly encouraged.
Sub Pop CMJ set times, and a live video of Pissed Jeans below...
"What should I be for Halloween? I'm thinking daft punk.. but give me your ideas!!" - Jon Asher
Daft Punk likes to play dress up. The Euro electronica duo is basically never seen in public without spaceman helmets clamped to their heads. It's a look that would not be out of place in a sci-fi flick like, say, "Tron Legacy," Disney's mega-budget remake of the 1982 original about artificial intelligence, a computer-generated world and Jeff Bridges in a skin-tight neon suit. There will also be "Daft Punk Tron-themed events".
And that's just where Daft Punk will be when the new "Tron" hits theaters in December 2010. MTV News has exclusively learned that the group will not only be scoring the film--as previously revealed--but that they will actually appearing in the movie itself.
Weezer + Matt & Kim + Halloween + Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC. It's the "MetroPCS Masquerade", and NYC's PT Walkley is also on the all ages bill. Tickets just went on "Live Nation" (password = hollywood) and "Radio" presale (password = 1019RXP) with a general sale starting Thursday at 10am (thx Hiro!)

The Grates @ Pianos in July (more by Chris La Putt)
"I can't even tell you how psyched we are for this tour. I have listened to Those Darlins self titled debut more times than I can remember. Plus look at those places. Albuquerque? Where the F is that? I don't know but I am busting at the seems to find out. If you know anyone in Albuquerque please forward on this mailout and tell them to come. Tell them to bring local delights." [The Grates]With the September 15th release of The Grates' new album, Teeth Lost, Hearts Won, approaching (MP3 above), the band is preparing to head out this fall on a co-headlining tour with Those Darlins.
Those Darlins (who now feature one engaged member) don't actually hook up with The Grates until October. Before then they're almost constantly on tour, and then they leave the Grates right before Halloween and keep playing more shows. On Halloween they play a show in Houston, Texas with The Meat Puppets.
Meanwhile in NYC, King Khan & the BBQ show are playing a Halloween show (and a Mischief night show) with Dum Dum Girls (who also play a few more dates with KK & BBQ). Then Those Darlins and King Khan hook up for another 11 shows. King Khan & BBQ also now have a ton of other 2009 shows scheduled with any girls as well.
All dates, and the new Grates album artwork, below...
Joe Jack Talcum
Dead Milkmen guitarist Joe Jack Talcum sets off today (9/1) on a two week solo tour. The tour visits NYC this Friday, September 4th for a show at Cake Shop with Samuel Locke-Ward vs. Darren Brown and The Bassturd.
On September 2nd, Joe shares a bill with another punk rocker turned solo artist, Kevin Seconds, at Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, NJ (tix). That show is just one date on Kevin's own tour that he's been on since his band 7 Seconds played a couple of shows with the Bouncing Souls at Webster Hall and The Troc. Kevin plays Union Hall in Brooklyn on September 3rd (tix).
Speaking of The Troc, Joe Talcum will also be playing with the Dead Milkmen this fall for a limited set of shows. They play two nights at Riot Fest in Chicago on October 9th and 10th, and then a special hometown show at The Troc in Philly on October 31st. Tickets for the Halloween gig are on sale now.

"Hey everyone! We just started the first leg of our crazy nine week tour (which ends in NYC on Halloween). These next few weeks we will be joined by our brothers, the Beets, on what we've named the Nightmare of Sound tour. [Tuesday] night was our kickoff show in Brooklyn at Death by Audio.According to the latest set of Vivian Girls tour dates, their Halloween show has been combined with the Crystal Stilts Halloween show for one big Halloween show.
Cassie made new shirts for this tour. We have our Moped Girls 7"s, WFMU LPs, The World's Lousy comps, tote bags, pins, and soon (Sept. 8th) our new album, Everything Goes Wrong, on vinyl and CD. We played with Real Estate, Best Fwends, and the Beets." [Vivian Girls blog posting]

That above picture is the cover for the forthcoming Tegan & Sara album, Sainthood, due out October 27th on Vapor Records. The record is being produced by Chris Walla (of Death Cab and many producing credits) and Howard Redekopp (who's worked with New Pornographers, Mother Mother, and others) - interesting in that they've both worked on past Tegan & Sara individually.
The pair (Tegan and Sara) have a few shows scheduled at the moment. Two of those will happen at NYC's Town Hall on October 30th and 31st (Mischief Night and Halloween). Tickets go on sale Friday at 10am.
Tiestoremixed Tegan & Sara's track "Back in your Head" in 2007. Now the three have collaborated again on "I Feel it in My Bones," a song that'll be included on Tiesto's new album, Kaleidoscope, out October 20th on Ultra Records. That song is streaming on his MySpace. Also guesting on the Tiesto album will be Jónsi of Sigur Rós, Kele Okereke of Bloc Party, Emily Haines of Metric, and others. Full tracklist is below.
Tiesto is going on a pretty big tour that kicks off with three nights at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC. Tickets for those shows (9/24-9/26) are on sale now. All dates, the Tegan & Sara album back cover and tracklist, and more, below...
