Hayaino Daisuki

When I was growing up, my mother got caught up in the PMRC nonsense and somehow had the idea that, though it is (wink), metal was "satan's music". I still got my fix by saving my lunch money to buy Morbid Angel and Deicide, supplementing the rest of my collection with high-speed dubbed copies of borrowed tapes. These would shape my tastes to come.
Fast-forward to the present and enter Hayaino Daisuki. Their hyperactive and thrashy melodic grind has always struck me as "Slayer on high-speed dubbing". The band's 2008 mega-ton warhead of an EP, Headbanger's Karaoke Club Dangerous Fire, was fierce. Lightning fast riffs shocked with technicality and impressed with endless power.
Now the band, which features Teddy Patterson (Burnt By The Sun) in addition to Jon Chang (Discordance Axis, Gridlink), Takafumi Matsubara (Mortalized, Gridlink) and Eric Schnee, will release their new EP The Invincible Gate Mind of The Internal Fire Hell, or Did You Mean Hawaii Daisuki? via Hydrahead on 2/23. Dig on the first track "Ghosts of Purgatory" available for download above.
So far Hayaino Daisuki has no concrete touring plans, but Chang/Matsubara/Patterson do- as part of Gridlink with Brian Fajardo of Kill The Client/Phobia. Look for Gridlink at Maryland Deathfest 2010 alongside Converge, Autopsy, Eyehategod, Asphyx, Entombed and many many others.

Dark Castle @ Union Pool (more by Sam Marble)

In recent months, the upswing in metal coverage on BV has rendered the moniker "Week In Metal" unnecessary. Small blurbs in "WIM" (as we call it around here) about Dark Castle have given way to photosets from their shows and posting of tour dates as they happen. Chalk it up to progress.
Starting this week, we will introduce a bit of a new direction for the old Week In Metal column, but without straying too far from the previous. The new column, entitled Short Wave Warfare, will scale back a bit, focusing on news that falls below the radar as well as shining a spotlight on new bands and upcoming shows in the NYC area. It won't be weekly. I hope you enjoy it.
Stay tuned for more upcoming shows in addition to Coalesce at Europa, Magrudergrind at Cake Shop, and The Hope Conspiracy at Union Pool, as well as a year-end best of 2009 post from myself and some of my favorite artists.
Thanks for reading. News on Portal, Oxbow, Master's Hammer, a collaboration between sunn O))) and Ulver, a new Haiyaino Daisuki & Gridlink, Amenra, Earthride, Kreator, Mammoth Grinder and so much more as (the new) Short Wave Warfare continues below....

Gridlink

Some days you just have to get down on your knees and thank the dark lord below for blessing (damning?) you with shows like the one tonight, August 14 - the first night of a six day tour by GridLink, Hayaino Daisuki, and ASRA. The show is at The Wreck Room in Bushwick in Brooklyn. All dates (including a Jersey City show) below.
Adding to the mayhem, venerable powerviolence-ers Weekend Nachos (best name ever? especially in context) will headline the show, with The Communion also on hand for the festivities.
So if Weekend f'n Nachos are headlining (reason enough to risk life & limb), why would we highlight GridLink & Hayaino Daisuki? For two reasons.... first, because both GridLink & Hayaino Daisuki's new albums (Amber Grey and Headbanger's Karaoke Club Dangerous Fire respectively) slay, and second, because they both feature the honorable Jon Chang, formerly of the legendary Discordance Axis. Hayaino Daisuki is a full-on thrash-grind-stravaganza (think Slayer on fast-foward), while GridLink takes the "screw thrash, lets bludgeon" approach to grind. Check out tracks from both GridLink and Hayaino Daisuki's new albums above!
Black Box's own ASRA are also on the tour and they've been (un)kind enough to drop a "Payload" of their own for download above. They're also currently streaming a few other tracks at their myspace.
