andrew bird

Andrew Bird is one of the contributors to a new compilation titled Good People Rock which benefits Montreal-based charity organization Yellow Bird Project. It's out now digitally via new Arts & Crafts imprint Madic Records. It's got artists associated with Yellow Bird (which makes unique t-shirts) covering other Yellow Bird artists, and Andrew Bird covers New Pornographers' "The Fake Headlines." It's my kind of cover in that Andrew Bird makes it his own while it's unmistakably a Carl Newman melody. The video for the song was made by directors Luke McCutcheon and Michael Yablonski with marionette artist Robin Polfuss and is quite lovely. Watch it below. Other artists involved on Good People Rock include The Tallest Man on Earth, Elvis Perkins, and King Creosote. Full tracklist is below.

Bird will be touring Europe this summer and will play a warm-up show for that at NYC's Le Poisson Rouge on June 25 which he's calling "a very special performance." Tickets for that show go on sale today (5/1) at noon. Andrew's only other US show is a gala benefit for Boston's Institute of Contemporary Arts on May 16. All dates are listed below...

NXNE 2013, Day 2
NXNE 2013, Day 2

While the Northside Festival was going on here in Brooklyn, and Bonnaroo was going on in Tennessee, Toronto was hosting its annual NXNE festival. Day 2 of NXNE had some great shows like Buke & Gase and more at Horseshoe Tavern, Julian Lynch/Luyas, Majical Cloudz and more at Sneaky Dee's (pictures of both of those coming soon), Odonis Odonis, The Soft Moon and more at The Garrison, and more. It also had one of the most exciting free Yonge-Dundas Square concerts of the weekend with headliners The National. Pictures of that show (including openers CTZNSHP and Hayden) are in this post.

We already posted NXNE day 1 pics, more day 2 pictures are HERE and more coverage is still on the way. More pictures of the National's Yonge-Dundas Square show below...

Arts and Crafts 10

Toronto record label Arts & Crafts, which was co-founded by Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew, is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year and in honor of that, they're presenting the Field Trip Music & Arts Festival in Toronto on June 8 at Fort York and Garrison Common. The festival's lineup is made up entirely of Arts & Crafts-affiliated bands, including Broken Social Scene, Feist, Bloc Party, Ra Ra Riot, Trust, Cold Specks, Timber Timbre, Jason Collett, Zeus, The Darceys, Hayden, Gold & Youth, and Still Life Still. For Broken Social Scene, the show is an exclusive return from the hiatus they began after their 2011 tour. Early bird tickets go on sale Wednesday (1/16) at 10 AM EST via the festival's website, and full price tickets go on sale Friday (1/18) at 10 AM via the festival's site, ticketmaster, and Toronto retailers Rotate This and Soundscapes. VIP ticket options are available too. Kids get in for free. The festival flyer is below.

The festival happens two days before Canadian music marathon NXNE and a limited number of NXNE wristbands will also gain admission to the festival. It's nice that this time around, the BSS show won't actually be during NXNE.

In addition to the festival, Arts & Crafts will be celebrating the anniversary in other ways, including releasing the double CD/4xLP boxset, Arts & Crafts // 2003-2012, which includes a collection of hits, rarities, and b-sides from the label; and also releasing Arts & Crafts // X, "an entirely original collection of collaborative recordings by artist pairings from the Arts & Crafts roster, including new compositions and fresh, unexpected interpretations."

The label will also be presenting a photography exhibit with photographer Norman Wong, a fashion collaboration with Canadian designer Jeremy Laing, a short fiction contest inspired by Broken Socal Scene's You Forgot It In People, and a pop-up shop which will be open from late May into mid June and serve as a headquarters for AC10 and Field Trip at a TBA location, plus possibly more stuff to come.

The trailer video and flyer for Field Trip are below...
