Young Magic at Mercury Lounge in 2011 (more by Jessica Amaya)
Young Magic

Young Magic picked up quite a bit of buzz in 2011 with a few singles and multiple tours with Youth Lagoon. They also played one of our CMJ Parties.

Now they're set to release their debut LP, Melt on February 14 via Carpark. The album will feature material from their singles, including "Night In The Ocean," "Slip Time", "Sparkly", and "You With Air." You can stream all four of those tracks below, along with the album artwork and tracklist, and the video for "Sparkly."

A while back Young Magic announced a record release show scheduled to take place in their current hometown of NYC on February 18 at Mercury Lounge. That show was cancelled after tickets went on sale but was re-announced this week and tickets are on sale now. The show is being opened by Heaven, who also open the Swervedriver show at Bowery Ballroom (3/31).

Young Magic were also initially billed as the openers for YACHT's upcoming tour but have since dropped off (2/26 Brooklyn show included).

Video, streams, and album info below...

Au Palais
Au Palais

Caveman, who recently signed to Fat Possum (who are now selling their album), conclude their North American tour in NYC on Friday (1/20) at Bowery Ballroom. That show is now sold out, but if you've got tickets you should get there early to check out London-via-Toronto duo Au Palais. The Bowery Ballroom show is their last North American show before returning home to London. Heaven is also on the bill.

Au Palais (aka brother and sister David and Elise Commathe) released their debut EP, Tender Mercy on December 5 via The Sounds of Sweet Nothing. The EP has gained pretty accurate comparisons to the dark synth pop of Austra and Zola Jesus but Elise Commathe sings with a much more subdued voice than the howls of Katie Stelmanis and Nika Danilova. Meanwhile, David plays a similar role in the group to that of Jamie xx in the The xx, with a focus on beatmaking that comes across most strongly on the EP's closing instrumental track, "H.o.l.l.a.n.d." Stream the entire EP below and purchase it at The Sounds of Sweet Nothing bandcamp.

Au Palais plan to follow this EP with a full length album that they recently spoke to FADER about:

DAVID: Yeah, we're working on it right now. It's a little brighter. We took a lot of inspiration from like early '90s house music--full-on operatic vocals.
ELISE: Just blame it on my love to dance. I was like, David, we need to write a dance song.
DAVID: There's also like plenty of dark shit in there, too, so don't worry that's still around.
ELISE: Don't worry the moody depressive songs will be back.

Ringo Deathstarr at SXSW 2011 (more by Bill Pearis)
Ringo Deathstarr

" I call a lot of things shoegaze, but these three have the classic '90s sound -- including Kevin Shields' glide guitar style -- down pat. Some seriously catchy songwriting keeps it out of pastiche territory. They are good and loud on the Palm Door patio, my first of many Lone Star tallboys of the week in hand, and it's a great start to the fest." [Bill]
Ringo Deathstarr, who just played Chaos in Tejas this past weekend (we didn't catch them though), will support Trail of Dead on a week-long run directly before heading out on a three week headlining tour at the end of June. The tour stops at Brooklyn's Shea Stadium on July 3 with Vandelles, Heaven, and Dead Leaf Echo.

Ringo Deathstarr released Colour Trip back in March. Check out a soundcloud stream of the entire album HERE, and the video for "So High" and more dates below...

DOWNLOAD: The Black Ryder - Gone Without Feeling (MP3)

the girls of Black Ryder @ Austin Psych Fest
Black Ryder

Australian duo (and band) The Black Ryder are in town this week, after having played Austin Psych Fest over the weekend (pictures in this post). They played Glasslands last night (5/3) with the Big Sleep, and will play the downstairs room at Santos tonight (5/4) with Heaven and My Best Fiend. Before Psych Fest they went on a short tour with Spectrum.

Made up of former Morning After Girls members Scott Von Ryper and Miss Aimee Nash, The Black Ryder released their debut Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride in late 2009 which got released in America last year on Mexican Summer. Members of Black Rebel Motorcyle Club, Swervedriver and Brian Jonestown Massacre guested on the album which should give you a good idea of what they sound like. To give you an even better idea, download "Gone Without Feeling" at the top of this post.

The openers at Santos tonight are pretty good. My Best Fiend are not that far from Spiritualized angelic comedown vibe -- download their Jesus Christ EP for free here. The three guys in Heaven have played with Adam Franklin, Dean & Britta, the Comas, The Big Sleep and others and lay down a dreamy/heavy sound of their own. It's a well-curated night of bliss-out music at high volume, and stick around for the afterparty with Calle's Aurellio Valle DJIng (and others).

The Big Sleep's current drummer Mikey Jones in the band Heaven who are playing a free late show at Mercury Lounge tonight after The Big Sleep play a show at Pianos with Keepaway.

If things seem off on the site at all today and tomorrow it's because BBG and I are working in Austin where we'll be through Monday for Fun Fun Fun Fest which sort of kicks off tonight with a Toyota Antics-presented pre-party featuring a headlining set by the Helio Sequence. If things seem normal, forget I said anything.

Guided by Voices were supposed to play Fallon tonight, but they cancelled their TV appearance.

Huey Lewis just played on, and was interviewed by, Jimmy Kimmel. Videos below...
