Holy Ghost! at Terminal 5 in May (more by VIncent Cornelli)
Holy Ghost!

Holy Ghost! are currently finishing up their run on the IDentity Festival tour which hit Jones Beach Theater on Sunday (8/21). They've also got an upcoming tour this fall with Jessica 6 and Eli Escobar. That tour kicks off on October 28 at Bowery Ballroom and continues throughout the US and Canada before returning to NYC on November 26 at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Tickets for both NYC shows go on sale Friday (8/26) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (8/24) at noon.

Holy Ghost! also recently made a video for "Some Children" Ft. Michael McDonald. You can check out that video below.

Jessica 6 play their own NYC show before the tour kicks off on September 10 at Mercury Lounge. Tickets for that show are on sale now too.

All dates, and video below...

Shit Robot at Terminal 5 (more by Andrew St Clair)
Shit Robot

Shit Robot has a few DJ and performance dates in the near future as part of a tour that kicks off in Chicago on Friday night at The Mid where James Murphy will also DJ. The NYC date is a DJ set at Le Bain on August 14th (no James). Full tour dates and a new mixtape and a remix by Shit Robot are below.

In other DFA Records news, The Rapture will play a sold-out Music Hall of Williamsburg on 8/20 which is followed by a bunch of European touring (updated dates below). The band recently released a new remix via an Adult Swim series. You can download the original for the price of your email at DFA. Adult Swim has since released the new Clams Casino track, "Wizard".

Juan MacLean has a few upcoming dates as well, including the previously discussed date on 8/20 at PS1 with Pictureplane (who just played a hot 285 Kent), Blood Orange, Solange Knowles and more. Full tour schedule is below.

Rewards aka Aaron Pfenning of Chairlift has signed to DFA and is releasing a 12" called Equal Dreams which is a track featuring vocals by Solange Knowles. Blood Orange aka Devonté Hynes contributes to the flip, "Asleep with the Lights On". Stream both songs below.

LCD Soundsystem guitarist Phil Mossman and Will Bates are Fall On Your Sword, and the duo are preparing to release the DFA debut too. The new single features extended versions of tracks from the soundtrack of Another Earth. Stream both songs, with a video for one too, below.

And last but not least, Holy Ghost hit the road as part of the Identity Festival in middle August, tagging PNC Bank Arts Center on 8/14 and Jones Beach Ampitheater on 8/21. Tickets are still available for both dates (they are no longer $20 though).

All tour dates and those Shit Robot mixes are below.

Internet Week

Internet Week 2011 is coming to NYC this Monday (6/6). The festival consists of several events, including mixers, panels, conferences, classes, and parties. The Rapture, who are back on DFA, are DJing the official Internet Week opening party with The Hood Internet and DJ Frankenmack. Cold Cave also play a live set at the party. The same night an after-party will take place with DJ sets from Holy Ghost! and Night People. Check out the full event schedule for more events including a discussion with Judah Friedlander and Michael Ian Black and more.

The two parties are invite-only and can be RSVP'd to with an insider pass which can be obtained here for the hefty price of $249 (or HERE for $149). If you can't muster up the cash, even though it may be worth it if you plan on attending all the rest of the stuff Internet Week has going on, we're giving away two insider passes. Contest details below. You can also pick up a HQ pass for just $15 and a tweet about your purchase but will not be allowed access to the parties.

The Internet Week event is one of three NYC shows Cold Cave currently have scheduled this summer. They also play Knitting Factory on July 12 with Cult of Youth and Zambri and Bowery Ballroom on August 6 with Austra. Tickets are still on sale for Knitting Factory and Bowery Ballroom.

Contest details and more about what the Insider Pass gets you, below...

Holy Ghost

LCD Soundsystem may be done but DFA Records still has a strong presence, especially lately, and especially Saturday night in NYC when Free Energy played Glasslands while Holy Ghost! headlined a sold out show at Music Hall of Williamsburg where they were joined by Nancy Whang on vocals and surprise guest Dave 1 from Chromeo on guitar. Holy Ghost's setlist and some videos are below. Later in the night Nancy headed to Webster Hall to hang with Classixx while Juan Maclean and friends DJ'd at Cameo.

Holy Ghost! recently released a video for "Wait & See" which stars the duo's actual fathers. Check that out below. Holy Ghost! are on the lineup of the HARD Summer Fest happening in LA on August 6th, as are DFA artists Shit Robot, Special Disco Version (James and Pat), and Still Going. Shit Robot also recently released a new video for "Losing My Patience" which features Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip. Watch that below.

DFA DJ Justin Miller is DJing at Hell's Kitchen on Tuesday night (5/3). NSFW flyer HERE. Matt Thornley DJ's with Midnight Magic at Public Assembly on Thursday.

Earlier last week, the DFA-signed YACHT came through town for their own big headlining show which was at Webster Hall with Light Asylum. A set of pictures from that show are also in this post and they continue with the other stuff, below...

Holy Ghost! in Austin last week (more by Tim Griffin)
Holy Ghost

The second edition of Noncerts goes down at Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn tonight (4/29). Elvis Perkins, Martha Wainwright, and Jesse Harris will all play sets with the all-star house band and tickets for the benefit are still on sale.

Stick around after Noncerts for the dance party happening in the same venue with DFA DJs Jee Day, Matt Cash and Juan Maclean who may not be joined by his bandmate Nancy Whang even though she will probably make an appearance earlier in the night across the street at the sold out Holy Ghost! show happening at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Nancy is scheduled to instead appear with Classixx tonight at Webster Hall (flyer below). If that's not enough DFA for you, Free Energy play a show tonight at Glasslands too. Oh, and if you're going to Holy Ghost!, save your ticket stub (if you have one). It gets you $3.00 off admission to Cameo (doors at midnight).

Holy Ghost! just got off a tour with Cut Copy whose next NYC show is in Prospect Park with Midnight Magic who you can catch way before that on North 6th Street too. On Cinco de Mayo, while BOBBY are doing there thing over at Knitting Factory, Midnight Magic, Arthur Baker, and DFA DJ Matt Thornley will play a show in the back room of Public Assembly while Colin Rogister [Disocography], Joakim [Paris/ Tigersushi], Sal P [Liquid Liquid], and Tim Sweeney [Beats in Space/ DFA] hold it down in the same venue's loft space. A $15 ticket will get you into both the main event and the "Discography" party in the loft, or you can skip the downstairs and pay only $5. The flyer for that part is below...

White Fence
White Fence

It's been kind of a bummer week with way too many great musicians lost (Gerard Smith, Poly Styrene, Pheobe Snow) but Spring is finally here and, well, the beat goes on. Lots of worthy shows this week.

First up is White Fence who are making a rare trip to the East Coast this week, playing a few shows here in NYC: Thursday at 285 Kent with Woods and Spectre Folk, then Saturday (4/30) at Cake Shop. I feel fairly certain that they are also "Beige Swordfights" listed as part of a sweet Death by Audio show on Friday (4/29) that includes The Beets, Fergus and Geronimo and The Sundelles.

White Fence is Tim Presley who also fronts LA psych-rock band Darker My Love. Where that band is more groovy in a JAMC/BJM kind of way, White Fence sounds like a lost nugget from the late '60s flower power scene. White Fence released its debut on Woodsist last year, and the second album, ...Is Growing Faith, came out this January. Both records are weird and wonderful, lots of great songs made more interesting with vintage sound and old-school tape effects. If you like Love, The Left Banke or, more recently, the Lilys (to name three L bands) you'll dig White Fence's scene.

White Wires
White Wires

Keeping with the color scheme, Ottowa, Ontario's White Wires are back in town for a one-off show on Thursday at Bruar Falls as part of a fun line-up of party rock and power pop. One of my favorite live bands of the last few years, White Wires play no-nonsense three-minute pop and do so with a joy you can't fake. White Wires new album, WWII, gets in and gets out in less than 30 minutes and should appeal to fans of the Nerves, early Tom Petty and The Undertones.

The rest of the show, brought to you by the good folks at Daed Pizza, looks pretty cool too with all-girl trio Babyshakes, and Games which is a new band formed from ex-members of Gentleman Jesse and Busy Signals. Obviously, this is not the synthy Games who now go by Ford & Lopatin. You can listen to this Games' swell debut single over at the Rob's House Records website.

Buffalo Tom
Buffalo Tom

What else? Buffalo Tom play Bowery Ballroom on Thursday (4/28). The Boston trio were once dubbed "Dinosaur Jr. Jr." (being signed to SST and having J Mascis produce your debut, it was an easy joke) but became one of the most popular bands of the early '90s alt rock scene. 1990's Birdbrain and 1992's Let Me Come Over are indie rock classics that were unavoidable on college radio and Alternative Nation (or episodes of My So-Called Life) and still hold up.

The band went on hiatus around 2000 but returned with 2007's Three Easy Pieces and have just released a new album, Skins, which came out in February. It's pretty good. More mature, yes, but Buffalo Tom can still bring the noise too. If you have any doubt, you can download the entirety of Buffalo Tom's Mercury Lounge show from November 2010 courtesy NYC Taper. You can also check out a track from Skins at the top of this post.

Modern Skirts
Modern Skirts

And finally, Lord Huron are here on Thursday (4/28, the night of Too Many Good Shows) at Mercury Lounge. (And at tonight at MHoW with Femi Kuti) (we're giving away a pair of tickets on Facebook). I like their EP well enough, and the Merc show seems likely to sell out, so I'm really here to say if you're going do go early enough to check out North Highlands who play right before them. It's their first show in a long time, as the band have been putting finishing touches on their debut album which they've been working hard on all winter. The band are promising lots of new songs which is pretty exciting. Anyone who's seen them play know North Highlands are great live and I think 2011 is gonna be a big year for them. Go see 'em! And yeah, stay for Lord Huron I guess.

That's mostly it for this week. A few more daily picks are below:

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27

Blogs may have gotten over their crush on Austin band Oh No! Oh My! but that doesn't mean they've gone stale. Hear their still-catchy indiepop tonight at The Rock Shop tonight. Go early to catch Atlanta's underrated Modern Skirts (check out two tracks at the top of this post).

Diehard, who've been busy recording their Kickstarter-funded debut album, try out some songs live at Cake Shop. One of NYC's best indie rock rock bands.

Cut Copy @ Stubb's
Cut Copy

Midnight Magic have been added to Cut Copy's upcoming Brooklyn show with Foster the People, upping the total number of bands on the Prospect Park bill to three. Tickets are still on sale.

Cut Copy's tour with Holy Ghost! ended in Austin over the weekend with two big shows at Stubb's. Tim was at the 2nd one, and his pictures are in this post.

Like she has in the past, Nancy Whang joined Holy Ghost! during their set. Maybe she'll do the same this Friday at their sold out headlining show at Music Hall of Williamsburg which is being opened by The Hundred in the Hands.

More Austin pics, including a shot of CC's setlist, below...

Cut Copy and a door @ Terminal 5
Cut Copy

NY PRESS: Every time you come back to the U.S., the venues seem a bit bigger. The shows at Terminal 5 sold out quickly. What's it like to see that progression?

Cut Copy: We've always found American audiences to be receptive. When we began, we were opening for people and it seemed when we started headlining all those people came back and brought their friends. It happened organically, as it should. It's not like we had a lot of press or hype behind that first record. It felt quite grassroots. We've found throughout the world we have such a loyal fan base. I never thought we would connect with an American audience. I'm not sure how it happened but it's amazing.

No dancey bands should have scheduled shows in NYC on Saturday, if for no other reason than they were probabably upset that they made it all the way to NYC on April 2nd, but couldn't go see LCD Soundsystem at Madison Square Garden, because they had to work. Daedelus and company played a show at Music Hall of Williamsburg that night, and Cut Copy and the DFA-signed Holy Ghost! played their second sold out show in a row that evening at Terminal 5. The other Cut Copy show was one night earlier, and Cut Copy will play the large NYC venue again, but with opener Midnight Magic, on Wednesday (also sold out).

The pictures in this post are from Friday and they continue, shot of Cut Copy's setlist included, and with more tour dates, below...

A-Trak at Terminal 5 (more by Brook Bobbins)
A-Trak

After a pair of appearances at Coachella (as himself and as part of Duck Sauce) A-Trak will hit the road for a string of US dates with Kid Sister and The Gaslamp Killer dubbed the "Magic 8-Ball Tour". That "Magic 8-Ball" rolls into NYC on April 30th at Terminal 5. Tickets aren't listed yet. All dates are below.

Meanwhile catch A-Trak with Art Brut, White Denim, Lissy Trullie, and The Suzan at Webster Hall on March 4th, aka night one of the two night Downtown Records party that continues at Terminal 5 on March 5th with Miike Snow, Major Lazer, Santigold, DJ Mehdi and others. Webster tickets are still on sale, though Terminal 5 is sold out.

If you don't have a ticket for the Terminal 5 show, you can still catch DJ Mehdi at his own headlining date at Music Hall of Williamsburg on March 4th with JDH & Dave P (Fixed). Tickets are still available.

Speaking of dance parties at Music Hall, Holy Ghost!, who opens for Cut Copy at two of their three upcoming Terminal 5 dates, will headline Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 29th. Tickets are still on sale.

Midnight Magic, who just played Music Hall with Escort, opens the 4/6 Cut Copy show which is the only Terminal 5 show with tickets left.

All current tour dates and some videos below.

Cut Copy

Cut Copy's April 2nd Terminal 5 show, which went on sale at noon, is already [update: almost] sold out, so they added another one. The new date is April 1st, also with Holy Ghost! opening, and will be on sale soon. More dates HERE.

Cut Copy at Williamsburg Waterfront (more by Benjamin Lozovsky)
Cut Copy

Cut Copy will hit the road for a string of US dates in late March with Holy Ghost!, tagging NYC's Terminal 5 on April 2nd along the way. Tickets for all dates are currently on fan presale, and look for Terminal 5 tickets to hit Ticketmaster soon too. Cut Copy's new album Zonoscope is due on 2/8 in the US. Check out a four-part video on the making of that LP below.

Brooklyn DFA group Holy Ghost! meanhile can be found on February 2nd at Mercury Lounge. Tickets are still available.

Holy Ghost is currently offering a download of the new song "Do It Again" from their forthcoming debut (due this Spring on DFA) for the price of an email address. The song is also streaming below. The new and self-titled LP will feature appearances from the Juan MacLean, the late Jerry Fuchs (of Maserati), the Rapture's Luke Jenner, and Michael McDonald (yes, that one) among others.

All tour dates and that song stream is below.

Furthur (no "e") has headlined Madision Square Garden which isn't a big surprise given that the band contains original Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh along with fellow hippies John Kadlecik of the Dark Star Orchestra on guitar, Jeff Chimenti of RatDog on keyboards, and Joe Russo of the Benevento/Russo Duo on drums (Jay Lane left Furthur after the March 12, 2010 show to rejoin Primus). Tickets go on presale on Thursday at 10am for EIGHT NYC shows happening in March. Five are at Best Buy Theater and three are at Radio City Music Hall.

Speaking of Radio City Music Hall, Janet Jackson is playing there on March 18th. Tickets go on presale Friday at 9am.

Janet Jackson notoriously had a "wardrobe malfunction" when she played the Superbowl Halftime show once. Tickets are now on sale for the show Neko Case is playing at the Bell House on Superbowl Sunday.

Eluvium was added to the Explosions in the Sky / Low show happening at Radio City on April 6th. Tickets are still on sale.

Tickets are on AmEx presale now for the Motorhead/Clutch/Valient Thorr show happening at Best Buy Theater. Tickets go on sale Friday for the same lineup at Starland Ballroom.

Fang Island is playing a headlining show at Bowery Ballroom on March 11th. Openers TBA. Tickets go on sale Friday at noon.

Tickets are now on AmEx presale for the Toro Y Moi shows at Bowery Ballroom and Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Tickets are on AmEx presale for the Hold Steady shows at MHOW & Terminal 5.

Tickets are now on AmEx presale for the Cave Singers / Lia Ices show at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Holy Ghost!, who has headlined Bowery Ballroom before (not sure how it sold though) will headline Mercury Lounge on February 2nd. Tickets are now on sale.

Tickets are on Amex presale for the Lost in the Trees show at Mercury Lounge.

Tricky was recently in town, and Morcheeba will be here in February to play two shows at Irving Plaza which are both on sale.

Tickets are now on AmEx presle for the Lucinda Williams shows at Webster Hall.

Tickets are now on AmEx presale for the OMD show at Webster Hall.

Tickets are on AmEx presale for the Of Montreal show at Webster Hall.

Das Racist is playing Highline Ballroom on February 3rd.

Rasputina is playing Highline Ballroom on February 26th with Mr Voltaire. Tickets are on sale.

Melissa Auf Der Maur is playing Highline Ballroom on March 3rd. Tickets are on sale.

Tickets are still on sale for the How to Dress Well and Autre Ne Veut show in a church.

Tickets are still on sale for the Trail of Dead show at Littlefield.

Raekwon

Festival of Strikes: A Benefit for JDub is taking place at Brooklyn Bowl on November 30th (Haukkah eve) featuring JDub artists The Sway Machinery, DeLeon, and other special guests to be added. Eugene Mirman will host. Tickets go on sale Friday at noon.

Highline Ballroom is hosting the 4th Annual Menorah Horah on December 4th. The burlesque-filled lineup for the night includes The Schlep Sisters, Minnie Tonka, Darlinda Just Darlinda, Jonny Porkpie, Sapphire Jones, Dottie Lux, Angelique A'lamode, Etta-May Freeway, Lady Rizo, DJ Mikey Palms and host Seth Herzog

And speaking of Hanukkah (December 1-9, 2010), much like Yo La Tengo, Matisyahu is returning to New York City with Hanukah shows this year, but in a slightly less ambitious way . He'll be here for the two nights preceding Hanukkah and only stay for three actual Hanukah dates (instead of playing all 8 nights in NYC like he did in the past). This time he'll finish up his own "Festival of Light" in other east coast states. Tickets are on sale now for 11/29 at Brooklyn Bowl, 11/30 at Music Hall of Williamsburg w/ Tally Hall, 12/4 at Music Hall of Williamsburg with DJ Rekha, and 12/5 at Music Hall of Williamsburg w/ Moon Taxi. Other dates include 12/1 at Northern Lights - Clifton Park, NY, 12/6 at Paradise Rock Club - Boston, MA, 12/7 at Ram's Head Live - Baltimore, MD, 12/8 at Theatre of Living Arts - Philadelphia, PA, and 12/9 at State Theatre - Portland, ME.

Speaking of artists linked to the jam band scene playing multiple nights in NYC with various openers, The Disco Biscuits are playing three nights at Terminal 5, and they definitely win in the opener department. Raekwon is opening up the 12/27 show. DFA artist Holy Ghost! is opening on 12/28 and Crystal Method is 12/29. Tickets are on sale now.

And while we're on the subject, Grateful Dead tribute band, Dark Star Orchestra, is playing The Wellmont Theatre on December 28. Tickets are on sale now.

Tickets are also still on sale for Passion Pit's New Years shows on December 30 and December 31 at The Wellmont Theatre.

The Roots are playing 3 sets on New Years Eve at Brooklyn Bowl.

Guided By Voices, Sharon Jones, Patti Smith, Phish, and Drive-By Truckers, and Gov't Mule are all also playing New Years Eve shows in NYC.

But sorry for getting ahead of myself, you probably still don't even know what you're doing on Halloween.

Matthew Dear @ MHOW in 2008 (more by Bao Nguyen)
Matthew Dear

As mentioned, Pitchfork will be hosting three days of shows at Brooklyn Bowl during, but-it-looks-like/probably completely unaffiliated with, CMJ this year (Thursday/Friday/Saturday CMJ week). "Brooklyn Bowl is located at 61 Wythe Avenue between N. 11th and N. 12th streets. The festival starts at 2 p.m. each day, with doors opening at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10, both in advance and day of the show." They're calling it the #OFFLINE Festival.

Based on the lineups and start time, it looks like each #OFFLINE day will be about a 12 hour show. No set times yet though, but the full lineups and ticket links are below...

Matthew Dear is one of the biggest names on the list (he plays Saturday), and it will be one of three CMJ week shows for Matthew. His first is Friday night at Webster Hall with Jamaica and Dominique Young Unique. His third is later on Saturday at Public Assembly for the FIXED/Making Time Party with Matthew Dear, Crocodiles, Holy Ghost!, Javelin, Gold Panda, Jamaica, and Kisses.

The FIXED/Making Time party starts after the BrooklynVegan party which is also happening at Public Assembly that same day. Just to be clear:

SATURDAY OCTOBER 23RD
* BrooklynVegan @ Public Assembly 12-6pm (free - more details TBA)
* FIXED/Making Time @ Public Assembly 9pm-late (tickets)
* Pitchfork @ Brooklyn Bowl 2pm-late (tickets)
* BrooklynVegan metal @ Union Pool 7pm-late ($5.00 or CMJ badge at the door)

We (BrooklynVegan) will also be at Public Assembly all day on Friday, October 22nd (details TBA), and at Music Hall of Williamsburg on the Thursday night.

All Matthew Dear tour dates (many of which we previously posted including a November show at MHoW), and the Pitchfork #OFFLINE Fest info, below...

The Knocks
The Knocks

"I DJed a show with DJ B-Roc of The Knocks a few months back. Dude was on point and I was blown away. Unsurprisingly, the highlight of the set came when B-Roc dropped his group's new single "Make It Better." The song is so dope, so summery, so perfect. And you can download it now at the Neon Gold blog. Be sure to pre-order the single so you can cop all of the remixes when they drop." [Panda Toes]
NYC's The Knocks are listing "NYU w/ Mystery Guests (dj set)" happening on September 7th on their tour dates. That would be the annual NYU Mystery Concert which I accidentally revealed will also include a set by certain member of Outkast on the bill.

The Knocks then have a few other scattered dates scheduled before CMJ, and then at least three scheduled during CMJ including the just-announced late show happening at Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday, October 20th with DFA's Holy Ghost. Tickets for that show will go on sale Wednesday, 9/8, at noon (or you can try to get in with your CMJ badge).

If you can't wait that long to see Holy Ghost!, don't forget that they also happen to appear on the lineup of this weekend's final 'Warm Up' of 2010 at PS1:

September 4th
Holy Ghost! / DFA Records, New York (live)
House of House / Whatever We Want, New York (DJ set)
DJ Mehdi / Ed Banger Records (DJ set)
Plus Special Guests TBA
The Knocks also list two other CMJ shows already. One is a Neon Gold / Chess Club showcase happening at Public Assembly on October 21st and the other is an NME show happening at the Studio at Webster Hall on October 23rd.

All dates for the Knocks & Holy Ghost!, below...

Hot Chip, Joe Goddard in spirit & Holy Ghost!
Hot Chip

"By the time darkness fell, the crowd was sufficiently antsy. Their thirst for rich sound was quenched by Hot Chip's arrival, opening with 'And I Was a Boy From School' from their second album. The humid New York night blew through all their albums, playing crowd favorites like 'One Life Stand' and 'Over and Over.' The night was an eveloping blanket of musk, causing the band and the crowd to shed layers of clothing as they raged on.

One of the band members, Joe Goddard, was unable to be there because he was with his wife, expecting their first child. The other members made sure to pay due tribute to their beloved bandmate, closing the night with a gloriously extended version of 'Ready for the Floor' that made the entire island of Manhattan rumble." [Ology]

While Spoon was warming up the sold out Madison Square Garden crowd last night, Hot Chip shared a bill with Hercules & Love Affair and Holy Ghost! at Central Park Summerstage.

Coming up, Hot Chip have dates scheduled with LCD Soundsystem. More pictures from Summerstage below...

MoMA's annual summer season of parties at PS1 in Long Island City, aka Warm Up, returns on July 3rd and there are lot of familiar names on this year's lineup. That is due in part to this year's curators being Dean Bein of True Panther Records, Jon Galkin from DFA, Kris Chen (XL), Ronan from LPR, writer Brandon Stusoy (Stereogum, etc), and Robin from Tri Angle. Memory Tapes is in the process of recording the follow-up to his/their 2009 debut, Seek Magic. The next show for Dayve Hawk & Co. will be on Saturday, June 26th (NOT Friday, June 25th as it accidentally got listed as in some places), when they headline BrooklynVegan Northside show with Twin Sister, DOM and ZAZA. Chromeo on a building in Williamsburg
Chromeo

"Kiiiiiiind of intense..." You'll hear our music in commercials here and there, but Pee and I have never done an ad campaign. When Bushmills kindly approached us to take part in one, we laid out our conditions clearly and carefully: we'll consider it, but we want a billboard the size of an entire building. Hand painted, at that. We want my brother to be part of the campaign too (nice little debate on whether this was a sell-out move over on his blog, by the way). The photography's got to be simple, classic and show that we're just buddies being ourselves, not indulging in any kind of product. Oh, and it has to be shot by someone who also worked with DMX. Hey, it worked. Drink responsibly.

Update: I was joking about the whole hand painted, DMX thing. (My dad didn't get it so I thought I'd clarify. [Chromeo]

Also in the ads, which you may have seen around NYC (the 8 Ave-14th St subway, for one), are Fool's Gold, No Mas, DFA Records and Kai Regan.

As for music, Chromeo release their next album, Business Casual, on August 17th. The song "Night by Night" from that album is a free download at Mountain Dew's Green Label Sound site. The full tracklist is below.

Chromeo' next show is at Bonnaroo (where the band will play with Daryl Hall), and they kick off a tour with Holy Ghost! on July 26th. That tour hits Bowery Ballroom in NYC on Thursday, July 29th. Tickets go on sale at noon today (5/26).

DFA's Holy Ghost! has become a household name (around here) lately thanks to the project officially becoming a full band and opening for LCD Soundsystem on their current tour which included four nights at Terminal 5. As previously mentioned, the band's other tour dates also include an opening slot for Hot Chip at Summerstage. They've since added their first headlining show too. It happens June 24th at Le Poisson Rouge and tickets are on sale.

"In the 3 years since I've seen the band, they've become an even tighter and more powerful live act. Even songs I was not really a fan of on their records were delivered with such focused abandon that it was impossible to not shake a head or foot in timed unison. Stylistically, the songs and band seamlessly weaved in a rich cross-section of record geek "hip" subgenres (disco, electro, hip hop, no wave, new wave, post punk) with a decidedly nyc flair. Murphy takes his talking points in the definitive "Losing My Edge" as both an ironic critique of "hipster" authenticity and a genuine sonic blueprint for his own music and artistic influences" [In This Game a Minute]
LCD Soundsystem and Holy Ghost! finished up their four-night run at Terminal 5 in NYC last night (5/23). They played the venue Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (there was also an official afterparty at Highline Ballroom on Saturday night). Pictures from the first night, are HERE (where you'll also find Holy Ghost's setlist). Pictures from night two are in this post.

The LCD setlist was exactly the same all four nights. According to Anon 4:33, James "commented on wanting to change up the set list for Sunday, but then said 'fuck it' and didn't. ok." That setlist is below.

And the (UK) numbers are in:

For the first time in 16 years, the Rolling Stones top the U.K. album chart, after their reissued 1972 album "Exile On Main St" (Polydor/Universal) hit No. 1. U.S. hip-hop artist B.O.B. debuted at the singles summit with "Nothing On You" (Rebel Rock/Grand/HustleAtlantic/Warner Music) featuring Bruno Mars...

...long-running favorite dance act, LCD Soundsystem, got a No. 7 debut with "This Is Happening" (DFA) and Alicia Keys' "The Element of Freedom" (J/Sony Music Entertainment) raced 21-8. [Billboard]

Those numbers are not to be confused with the U.S. Nielsen Soundscan numbers - a contest The National scored #3 in, one week earlier. This week's U.S. chart coming soon.

No rest for LCD Soundsystem right now. The band, along with Holy Ghost!, are already playing their next show in Montreal tonight (5/24). This summer they'll hit festivals all over the world. In the U.S. it's Sasquatch (next weekend), Pitchfork, Bonnaroo, and ACL. All dates, more pictures from Friday, videos (including one of the balloons dropping) and the setlist, below...

T5

Holy Ghost! played their 2nd live show as a full band last night at Terminal 5 in NYC (5/20) (they went on at 8:30). Their six song set included a guest appearance by Penguin Prison, "Say My Name" (download it above, get it on their new EP) and "Jam for Jerry". Their full setlist is below.

Holy Ghost's first-ever show was a private show Saturday night at Under 100. Their third is tonight (Friday, 5/21), again at Terminal 5, and again opening for LCD Soundsystem. In fact, they open every LCD show from now until June 9th, and for Hot Chip at Summerstage. All dates below.

LCD Soundsystem went on at 9:30 and played for two hours, long encore included. The encore included a cover of Empire State of Mind - that's when the balloons came down, which they tacked on to NY I Love You.

The bands seemed to be having some technical difficulties. James said it's nice to be able to sleep in his own bed before each of the four NYC shows they're doing at the venue through Sunday.

LCD Soundsystem @ Webster Hall in April (more by Ryan Muir)
LCD Soundsystem

"New York likes art stars. When I was in DFA, we were seen as these crazy guys throwing these drug parties connected to some fashion show. That was cool to people. Now I'm just a guy in a band. I suppose what happened is that I spent my whole life wanting to be cool, but eventually came to recognise the mechanism of how coolness works. So it's not really that I don't want to be cool any more - it's more like I've come to realise that coolness doesn't exist the way I once assumed."
[says James Murphy to Chuck Klosterman]

LCD Soundsystem kick off their four-night Terminal 5 run tonight (Thursday, 5/20). All four shows are opened by Holy Ghost! and are/were sold out (you can check Ticketmaster as they always release tickets to shows). We have one pair to give away for tonight. Details below.

LCD's new album "This is Happening" is out (you can get it at insound and iTunes). AT iTunes you get a a bonus track - a cover of Paperclip People's "Throw". Reviews range from Best New Music to "LCD Soundsystem can do, and has done, much better" to "You wonder how he could share lyrics so half-baked" to "Despite occasional flashes of brilliance this is a patchy, derivative work."

After the T5 show on Saturday there's an after-party with DJs James Murphy, Pat Mahoney and plenty of friends at Highline Ballroom. Tickets are on sale. More details in the flyer, with the contest details and the new video for "Bye Bye Bayou" below...

Central Park Summerstage (more by Chris La Putt)
Central Park Summerstage

The schedule for the 2010 SummerStage series, which has music not just at Central Park, is out, and there are some great looking shows to highlight.

At Central Park, the first "rock" show happens on Saturday, June 5th with Living Colour, Ebony Bones!, Pillow Theory and CX KiDTRONiK. Baaba Maal, who just played Irving Plaza, will be at Central Park too on Monday, June 14th The Tinariwen show on Saturday, June 26th also features Syrian beat & mikeman Omar Souleyman. Gil Scott-Heron plays Central Park in June and Marcus Garvey Park in August.

There's also El Guincho, Bostich and Fussible and others in Central Park on July 7th. Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff plays Central Park on Sunday, July 11th. Raphael Saadiq performs there Saturday, July 17 at 3pm. The Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba/Fool's Gold show on Sunday, July 25th will also feature "West African electronica" band Burkina Electric.

On Wednesday, July 21st, there'll be a Comedy Central's The Daily Show and Friends Central Park gig hosted by Lewis Black with John Oliver, Rob Riggle, Wyatt Cenac, Adam Lowitt and Rory Albanese.

There's also music from St. Vincent, Tune-Yards and Basia Bulat on August 1st at Central Park. The xx play with Jack Penate and Chairlift there on August 8th. At the same spot, Public Enemy play an August 15th day show to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Fear of A Black Planet, and the Specials play on August 22nd with Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears and $mall ¢hange.

The borough-wide shows kick off with Jay Electronica in Red Hook Park on June 1st. Also at that park is Dan Deacon on Tuesday, June 15th. White Rabbits play East River Park on August 12th.

There's lots of great jazz too: McCoy Tyner plays with Ravi Coltrane, Esperanza Spalding and Francisco Mela as part of the CareFusion Jazz Festival on June 23rd. He also plays in the Charlie Parker Jazz Fest, which comes at the end of the summer with an incredible lineup. McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Scott, Jason Moran and the Bandwagon and Revive da Live play during the day at Marcus Garvey on Saturday, August 28th. Then the next day, James Moody, Catherine Russell, Vijay Iyer and The JD Allen Trio play at Tompkins Square Park.

The park benefit shows include John Butler Trio and State Radio on June 15th (tickets on sale), The Flaming Lips on July 26th, The Black Keys with the Morning Benders on July 27th and 28th, Hot Chip/Hercules & Love Affair/Holy Ghost on August 4th, Govt' Mule on August 11th (tickets), and one of the four Pavement shows September 21-24. Plus there's a "songbook of Simon & Garfunkel" benefit on June 8th.

Not all "Summerstage" shows are in Central Park anymore which drives home the point even further that the name of the venue in Central Park is actually "Rumsey Playfield" which hosts non-"Summerstage" shows too. Those so far include Coheed/Torche, CAKE, Ween, and Broken Social Scene.

The full Summerstage free show schedule is below...
