Homeboy Sandman

Not counting a May 3rd show at Cornell, rapper Homeboy Sandman will kick off a North American tour in Nashville on June 4th and hit Santos Party House in NYC on June 12th with The Difference Machine, P.U.D.G.E, and "Special Guest DJ" EDAN. Tickets for the NYC show are on sale. All of HS's dates are also listed, along with his new video for "Fat Belly", below.

Homeboy recently added to a front page controversy via an article he wrote for Gawker entitled "Black People Are Cowards". He writes:

In light of the recent decision by a professional basketball team, comprised of mostly black players, to respond to their boss basically saying "I hate niggers" by turning their shirts inside out the next day at work, I have come to the decision that I agree wholeheartedly with the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, and I too do not want black people invited to my events.
LOTS more where that came from, if you haven't read it yet, at Gawker.

Tour dates, songs and video below....

Sooner than that, you can catch fast-rising Chicago rapper Chance the Rapper at his second of two nights at SOB's TONIGHT (10/30). He's doing two shows tonight (8 PM and 11 PM), both sold out. And if you're going, don't miss footwork wizard DJ Rashad, who's opening.

Meanwhile, Redman is also playing NYC TONIGHT (10/30) at Best Buy Theater as an opener on the previously discussed Cypress Hill Halloween show. Tickets for tonight's show are still available.

More vets, this time from the west coast, Blackalicious (aka Gift of Gab and Cheif Xcel) are playing Brooklyn Bowl on December 10. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

For something much different, you can catch Kosha Dillz (who often opens for Turquoise Jeep) at The Studio at Webster Hall on November 4 with Kyle Rapps, Stan Ipcus, G.R.A.M.Z., Shamon Cassette and SFTTM. TIckets for that show are on sale now.

Stones Throw-signed rapper Homeboy Sandman is teaming up with YC the Cynic (who recently released his GNK LP), I Am Many, Open Mike Eagle and Tone Tank for a show on January 18 at Gramercy Theatre. Tickets are available.

Japandroids

NPR Music have announced their "50 favorite" albums of 2012, which includes names like Pallbearer, Andy Stott, Cat Power, Fiona Apple, Death Grips, and Swans. (No Grimes, though.) The list is also deep with hip hop, with shouts to Homeboy Sandman, Kendrick Lamar, Killer Mike and many others. Much like Q magazine did, NPR opted to list them alphabetically instead of one better than the next. Check out the full list below.

Japandroids also made the list, and the band played the first of two shows at Webster Hall last night (12/4). The band continues their stay at the venue tonight and tickets are still available.

The first single, "Watchu Want From Me," was produced by Oddisee and you can download it above or stream it below. The cover art and tracklist are below too.

Homeboy Sandman will be supporting the album on a tour with Brother Ali that hits NYC on September 27 at Bowery Ballroom (tickets), but before that both he and Oddisee will play a FREE day show in NYC TODAY (8/2) at Public Assembly with Immortal Technique and Tru Fam for a Last.fm filming. In addition to those two Public Assembly shows, there's tons of other good hip hop shows going down in NYC tonight and this weekend. JSpace.com is throwing 'The Ultimate College Bar Mitzvah" at Highline Ballroom tonight (8/2) with sets from Talib Kweli, The Higher Concept, and The Rooks. It's a bit of an unusual show though. Highline's site reads, "This is THE event for all interns and college students in the New York area. Rock your college swag, bust some moves, and come ready to have a great time. From 8-9PM, professionals from large corporations will work the room, looking to meet college students." Tickets for the show are available.

Nina Sky have a new album/mixtape out this week (7/31) called Nicole and Natalie (the actual first names of the twins that make up the duo), which you can download in full above or stream below. Chippy Nonstop, Roxy Cottontail, and Ferrari Snowday are on the bill too. TIckets for that show are available.

Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q's tour supporting Wiz Khalifa hits Jones Beach tonight (8/2). Tickets for that are still available. As mentioned, Kendrick will return to NYC on his tour which hits Terminal 5 on September 15 and Schoolboy Q will when his tour with A$AP Rocky and Danny Brown hits NYC on September 27 at Roseland Ballroom. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (8/3) at 10 AM.

Aesop Rock, whose new album Skelethon is at least his best since Bazooka Tooth and one of the contenders for rap album of the year, is currently supporting that album on a previously discussed tour with Rob Sonic, DJ Big Wiz, Edison, and Dark Time Sunshine which hits NYC this Friday (8/3) at Irving Plaza. Tickets for that show are still available. Dark Time Sunshine also just released a new album, ANX, which features Aesop Rock, P.O.S., Busdriver, and others. You can stream that album in full below.

Brother Ali

Minneapolis rapper Brother Ali is set to release his new album, Mourning In America and Dreaming In Color, on August 21 via Rhymesayers. That's the cover art above. The album was produced by Jake One. You can stream "Stop The Press," from that album below.

Brother Ali will support the album with the 'Mourning In America' tour with Homeboy Sandman, who put out his first release for Stones Throw earlier this year, and DJ Sosa. He'll be touring with his new live band, Blank Tape Beloved, which features Jake One. That tour hits NYC for a show on September 27 at Bowery Ballroom. Colorado's The Reminders will also be supporting some dates on the tour, including the NYC show. Tickets for that show go on sale today (6/29) at noon.

In related news, StarTribune reports that Brother Ali was arrested in Minneapolis last week as he was taking part in an Occupy Homes protest for "trespassing and refusing police orders to leave the premises." They write:

Thirteen protesters were arrested out of about 125 at the site. It was one of at least a dozen protests nationwide, timed to a meeting at PNC Bank in Pittsburgh. Occupy leaders blame a PNC computer glitch for leading to the foreclosure of the former Cruz family home at 4044 Cedar Av. S.

...

This was a first-time arrest for the rapper, who has been active in several community causes. He organized a block party last summer at Masjid An-Nur, the North Side mosque where he and U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison worship, offering help to tornado victims in north Minneapolis, where he spent his teenage years.

Ali became a Muslim at age 15 to lessen the outcast status he felt as an albino. "The Muslim teachings I know tell you not to break laws," he said, so he consulted spiritual leaders beforehand about the possibility of being arrested. He said he spent about seven hours in jail. He was released on $50 bail and is due in court July 5.

Brother Ali since tweeted, "I appreciate all the love and support for my little involvement in Occupy Homes. The real heros are the families who lead the charge."

A list of all Brother Ali dates and that song stream are below...

Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival 2009

The theme of this summer has been rain, and though the skies opened up halfway into the 5th anniversary show of The Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival on June 20th in Empire Fulton-Ferry State Park, that didn't stop the crowd from swaying to the classic beats and rhymes by a stable of 90s artists. Thankfully the organizers of the DUMBO show thought ahead, and though it was a little packed in there, everyone stayed perfectly dry inside the emergency tent.

With all the veterans of hip hop on Saturday's lineup, you'd think that the most kinetic performance of the day would come from a Grand Puba or Pharoahe Monch. You'd be wrong. Oddly enough, the least "conscious" MC and the one that I always felt was slightly overrated, Styles P of D-Block (fka The Lox), delivered an energetic performance of hits that was matched only by the energy that the crowd bounced back. I was shocked, though pleasantly so.

I was glad to be wrong about Styles P, and I definitely learned a few other things that rainy Saturday:
