Growing (Joe Denardo and Kevin Doria) are an experimental/drone duo originally from Seattle that have relocated to Brooklyn. Growing's music resides on a very specific plane that embraces intense rhythmic patterns and quirky experimentation. Ranging between pedal-heavy loop collages and electronic ambient explorations, they are equally at home opening for Boris (as they did in April) as they are opening for Hot Chip, which is what they're doing on their next tour that hits Pop Montreal October 1st and NYC two and three days later.
Like Boris, their catalog is incredibly varied. Their new record for The Social Registry, All The Way, is an unrelenting panorama of looped effects and mesmerizing drone at very determined pacing. The new single, "Wrong Ride" (video below), sounds like the soundtrack to a nitrous high under a radiator. I haven't stopped listening to All The Way since it dropped a couple weeks ago and I'm looking forward to their next live show.

Did you run into any other major problems during the booking?M.I.A. and Hot Chip are getting married? To each other? To Zach Condon?
Anthony Kiedis: For some reason, this is the summer of bands getting married. I ran into that twice. I'm very keen on M.I.A., I think she's a rocking live performer. She wanted to play, she was very into it and it seemed like a great deal and suddenly she's getting married. Same with Hot Chip. They have a real groove; they write good songs and have an interesting personality. Except for the fact that they're getting married. Undone by matrimony, but not really undone. [Rolling Stone]
The bands that ARE playing Anthony Kiedis' "New American Music Festival" (August 8 & 9 at SouthSide Works in Pittsburgh) are listed below....

Hot Chip & crowd @ Terminal 5, NYC - April 12, 2008 (ballulah)
"Yes. Hot Chip was ridiculously good. I wasn't expecting the show to be better than at MHoW but I think it was. I haven't been too many times to Terminal 5, but is this the first band really rocking that whole place?" [Eduardo]
"WORST. VENUE. EVER." [Yvonne]
"Terminal 5 turned into its predecessor, NYC hot spot Exit last night for a fist pumping, ass shaking, foot moving good time." [Sal]

Xavier de Rosnay
"their DJ sets are a million times better than their actual live shows. the stuff they dropped into their set at their afterparty at studio b (post-terminal 5, not msg) was brilliant."Xavier spins an excellent blend of electro, pop, and tons of the unexpected. Take Justice's Xmas mix or their Essential Mix for BBC's Radio 1, make them a bit more electro/dance heavy and that's probably what you can expect for Saturday's set. Tickets here
And two less pricey options for Saturday:
A few months ago you couldn't read an electro blog without see Gui Boratto's 'Chromophobia' on a "favorite albums of '07" list. Unfortunately this is one I still have yet to pick up, but I have heard and read enough to know that Saturday's show should be nothing short of amazing. Not a traditional, crate-digging deejay, expect to hear a range of his own tracks and remixes delivered live with the aid of his laptop and a few controllers adding an upbeat and immediate feel, "Making the Minimum Sound Like More".

No, that's not Matthew Dear crying into his arm after discovering his hard drive was stolen at Galapagos the other night. It's a picture of him performing (with his Apple laptop and 'Big Hands' band) at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn last night (April 8, 2008). He opened for Hot Chip whose members also joined Matthew on stage for a song.....

Hot Chip played a show at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn last night (April 8, 2008). The show was a late addition to their North American tour that also includes a show at Terminal 5 in NYC this Saturday (April 12th). More pictures below.....
Matthew Dear @ Galapagos (bunker) - April 4, 2008 (100five)
Hey,If anyone has anymore details, please contact me and I'll pass it on. Matthew Dear is opening for Hot Chip tonight (April 8) at Music Hall of Williamsburg.
Matthew, who was celebrating his birthday yesterday, had been playing a killer set for 2 hours or so. Suddenly he got a message on his computer saying that his hard disk drive was unplugged...
The music stopped, he checked and found out that the drive was actually missing... basically someone STOLE his hard drive in the middle of his set and ruined the all show!!!
This is SO WRONG!!! The management of the place asked people if they had seen anything, but nobody did, and the guy probably ran away...
FYI, Matthew just moved few month ago from Detroit to Brooklyn. We are privileged to have him here. Shame on the guy who did this.
If you need more details, you can contact me. Thank you.
Exciting NYC Hot Chip news. Their April 12th show at the large Terminal 5 is sold out, so they added one four days earlier at the significantly more intimate Music Hall of Williamsubrg in Brooklyn. $35 (ouch) tickets for the April 8th show go on sale March 24th at noon. There's also a Hot Chip show scheduled for Sunday April 13th at R Bar in Manhattan with The Glass, but Hot Chip will only be DJing at that one (thx Hiro).
Hot Chip also have a new show scheduled at the Mayan Theatre in LA right after they play Coachella (with Prince). Maybe that LA show replaces the show they were supposed to play at the El Ray in February, or maybe it's in addition to a make-up show because the El Rey one is actually still listed on Ticketmaster too. All tour dates below....
DOWNLOAD: Hot Chip - Ready For The Floor (LA Riots & Villains Rmx) (MP3)
This just got passed to us by LA Riots themselves. It's their bootleg of "Ready For The Floor" that they did with Villains. It's a monster. We already love the original and this turns it into a late night smoker - just in time for LA Riots' return to Studio B Friday night (with MSTRKFRFT & The Bloody Beetroots). This track speaks for itself. Get ready to hear this everywhere. More LA Riot dates below...

editor's note: 2 things - 1) sorry this post is 2 days late. oops. 2) Largehearted Boy and Chromewaves are good people. I just don't agree with their opinion of Basia Bulat....
Of the new music releases this week, Basia Bulat's Oh My Darling is by far my favorite. Her debut album finally gets a US release tomorrow on Rough Trade, thanks to Frank at Chromewaves for not only pointing out this wonderful singer-songwriter, but for also continuing to champion this talented artist.
Other new releases I can recommend include Hot Chip's Made in the Dark, Dead Meadow's Old Growth, Jason Collett: Here's To Being Here, Lightspeed Champion's Falling off the Lavender Bridge, Nada Surf's Lucky, School of Language's Sea from Shore, and Sons & Daughters: This Gift.
Interesting reissues include a two-disc remastered edition of Paul Weller's Wild Wood, which includes one disc filled with demos.
What new releases you picking up this week? What can you recommend? Have I left anything worthwhile off the list?
Hot Chip @ Highline Ballroom, NYC - Feb 2, 2008 (Ryan Dombal)
"The sold out Hot Chip show at the El Rey has been canceled. To quote their publicist Alison Tarnofsky, "I'm afraid the show has been canceled due to with illness with one of the band members." We'll keep updated with rescheduling and ticket information as it comes available. We wish the band well and for a speedy recovery" [Metromix]
That might also explain why they didn't play all the songs on the setlist Saturday night in NYC.
Hot Chip @ Highline Ballroom, NYC - Feb 2, 2008 (ballulah)
Hot Chip was perfect last night (Feb 2, 2008). I've seen them a few times, and this show was by far my favorite one, and without a doubt the best. The sound at Highline Ballroom was incredible. No technical difficulites. The lights were great. The crowd was having a good time and actually dancing. The band was into it. They played a nice mix of old and new songs, and they all sounded so good.
