Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5

Countless band reunions, Wet Hot American Summer, and the '90s/early '00s revival continues when Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 comes out this fall. It's the first THPS game since 2002. As fun as the games were, the soundtracks were equally important and for people of a certain age they probably turned you on to a lot of stuff. Maybe playing those games was the first time you heard Agent Orange's "Bloodstains" or Gang Starr's "Mass Appeal" or Adolescents' "Amoeba."

The soundtrack for the new one has been revealed, and it's got a lot of cool stuff. There are great newer songs that weren't around during THPS' initial run, like Cloud Nothings' "I"m Not Part of Me," Bully's "Milkman," Cold Cave's "A Little Death to Laugh," Death From Above 1979's "Virgins," The Orwells' "Who Needs You" and Temples' "Shelter Song." Plus some more legendary stuff too, like Death's "Keep On Knocking." Check out the full tracklist and a playlist of the whole thing (via Wired) below.

High on Fire

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...

Cayetana, Chumped, Thin Lips, Worriers @ Baby's All Right
BV is thrilled to present this show with four of the indie/punk bands we're especially excited about at the moment. Philly's Cayetana get better every time we see them, Chumped are probably Brooklyn's current best pop punk band, Thin Lips only just put out a debut EP but are already super tight, and Worriers' new personal-meets-political pop punk album is great.

High on Fire, Pallbearer, Lucifer, Venomous Maximus @ Irving Plaza
BV is presenting this one too, and we're just as excited. High on Fire are one of sludge metal's most dependable bands and this year's Luminiferous does nothing to change that. Pallbearer are last year's doom MVPs, Lucifer is the new band of The Oath vocalist Johanna Sadonis, and Venomous Maximus are very promising bringers of occult doom.

Van Halen @ Jones Beach
Van Halen have never been more literally-named than they are right now, with Wolfgang Van Halen joining his dad Eddie and uncle Alex in the band. Still, all eyes on frontman David Lee Roth who still puts on a helluva show (even if he can't hit the high notes anymore). This is the final of three NY-area shows.

Frankie Cosmos, Radiator Hospital, Timeshares, Palehound, Free Cake For Every Creature, Facility @ Stangl Factory (Flem Fest)
Flemington, NJ hosts a pretty cool indie rock festival this weekend and tonight's show is the best of it, ranging from the twee-ish Frankie Cosmos to the indie-pop-punk of Radiator Hospital to the twang-punk of Timeshares and more.

Andrew WK, The Movielife, Kill Your Idols, Crime In Stereo, Incendiary, A Loss For Words, Iron Chic, Giants At Large, Gates, Microwave @ Emporium (Today's Mixtape Festival
The first day of Long Island's Today's Mixtape Festival includes a ton of great melodic hardcore (The Movielife, Kill Your Idols, Crime In Stereo, Incendiary), an afterparty with the king of partying Andrew WK, and more.

Ricky Eat Acid, Foxes in Fiction, Emily Reo, Eartheater @ Riis Park Beach Bazaar
Summer is winding down but you've still got time to make it to the beach. So why not take in some bands, games and good eats while you're at it? Today's free lineup of music includes electronic musician Ricky Eat Acid and the gentle Foxes in Fiction.

Soupcans, Chat Logs, Ghetto Ghouls, IYEZ, Nine of Swords @ Shea Stadium
Bring the noise with this lineup of skronk-heavy postpunk and punk, featuring Toronto's Soupcans and Austin's abrasive treblemakers Ghetto Ghouls.

Excepter, Zaimph, Image Man, Silk Purse, Cyanide Tooth, Rhyton, Kyle Eyre Clyd, Matthew Mullane, Abigail Hobbs, Sarah Louise @ Trans-Pecos
Excepter, who are one of Trans-Pecos' current curators, has put together this marathon called "A Dog Day's Journey Into Night Festival." Music starts at 2PM and will be continuous till 4 AM.

Juan Wauters, Ice Balloons, Tall Juan @ Union Pool
There are few ways more chill (and fun) to spend Saturday in the warm month than at Union Pool's free Summer Thunder series. Today's a good one, with two Juans for the price of one, plus weirdo noisemakers Ice Balloons in between. Starts at 2 PM.

Nick Hook, Veronica Vasicka, Vessel, Ninos Du Brasil, Cut Hands, French Fries b2b Bambounou @ MoMA PS1 (Warm Up)
Sadly, headliner Untold had to drop off this due to "scheduling issues," but there's still a lot of cool stuff like the Tri Angle-signed Vessel, percussive duo Ninos Du Brasil, industrial/noise musician Cut Hands and more.

Cut Hands, Container, Ligature @ Palisades
After Warm Up, Cut Hands keeps the party going at Palisades with two great noisy openers.

American Sharks, Tournament, Hundred Visions, Mammal @ Saint Vitus
This bill brings stoner rockers American Sharks together with scuzzy punks Tournament and garage rockers Hundred Visions.

Title Fight, Basement, Alex G, Adventures @ Starland Ballroom
Basement and Adventures' tour hits NYC next week, but tonight it's nearby and this one is especially cool because it has the great post-hardcore-turned-shoegazers Title Fight and lo-fi indie rocker Alex G.

Moon Boots, Garrett David, Kenny Dope @ Verboten
Moon Boots has been keeping the pop-house revival strong on his steady stream of singles, including the most recent "Utopia" that came out this week. Tonight he plays with New York house vet Kenny Dope and Chicago's Garrett David.

Hard Left, Bombflower, Voice of Doom, Anticitizen @ ABC No Rio (matinee)
Hard Left is Mike Schulman from Black Tambourine / Manatee / Slumberland Records' change to make late '70s UK-style punk. Today's the second NYC show of this tour.

PWR BTTM, Adult Mom, The Jeffrey Lewis & Peter Stampfel Band, Izzy True @ Aviv
It's the release party for the first issue of Hazel Newlevant's new comic book series, No Ivy League, and there's a pretty cool lineup of bands. Self-described "genre-queer" band PWR BTTM, the anti-folk-inspired Adult Mom, Jeffrey Lewis' band with folk legend Peter Stampfel, and Don Giovanni-signed singer/songwriter Izzy True.

John Hiatt, Steve Moakler @ City Winery
Having made records that range from new wave to country over the last 40 years, John Hiatt is a consummate songwriter, and one hell of a singer and guitarist too.

For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our NYC concert calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.

Hundred V

Austin band Hundred Visions travel in the same circles as neighbors OBN IIIs and make a similar, if poppier, guitar racket. This week the band just released their second album, Spite, via Wau Pau and you can stream it via Rdio below. You can also check out the horror-themed video (a lot of that going around today, hmm) for single "You're Gonna Cut Me Loose" that plays like a lost, warped VHS rental from 1991. It makes its premiere in this post and you can watch it below.

While Hundred Visions have no tour plans at the moment, if you're heading to Austin next week for Fun Fun Fun Fest, they'll be playing a couple shows during that, including a Burger Records presented FFF Fest Nites show, and another with Thee Oh Sees, Jack Name and Warm Soda. Dates are listed, along with the video album stream and flyer, below..

Archers of Loaf at Bowery Ballroom 4/26/12
Archers of Loaf

Archers of Loaf teamed up with fellow reunited '90s Chapel Hill band/Merge labelmates Pipe for a NYC show at Bowery Ballroom on 4/26 with Hundred Visions. The show was one of two in NYC for Archers of Loaf, who also played MHOW on 4/29 with Titus Andronicus and Sun Ladders. Archers of Loaf played a solid mix of material off all four of their full lengths and reached into other parts of their back catalog as well. Here's what My Old Kentucky Blog had to say about the show:

A strong performance of "You and Me" built momentum into a one-two punch from 1996 release All the Nation's Airports, "Distance Comes in Droves" and "Scenic Pastures," which launched a sing-along that pretty much continued for the rest of the show. The vibe reached a fever pitch for "Audiowhore," which gave way to the happiest moshers I've seen. No rudeness, just a group of fans hyped up and grateful to bask in the raw, lively goodness the Archers are known for.

Their songs sounded just as fresh today as when they were released in the 1990s. Archers of Loaf are very much in good form, proving good rock doesn't have an expiration date.

More pictures, video and setlist from the Bowery Ballroom show below.

pipe

Tickets are now back on sale (but probably not for long) for the Archers of Loaf show at Bowery Ballroom TONIGHT (4/26) (MHoW show on 4/29 is now sold out).

As discussed, Hundred Visions (insert joke about Eighteen Visions here) will open the show, but direct support will come from Chapel Hill band, and the Archers' Merge label-mates, Pipe.

Pipe is possibly the closest thing Chapel Hill's ever had to an SST band: Their raw, aggressive roar blended the hookiness of early punk with the hard-hewn fits of early American hardcore. There's a loose-limbed abandon to songs like "Sonic Scout" and "Hammer God" that recalls the Circle Jerks, while blasts like "Bowling for Fuckers" just crank up the Marshalls and charge like the Stooges. Their fearless leader and singer, Ron Liberti, is the ringmaster taking listeners down dark hallways and through the banal indignities of life. -[Pipe bio]
Pipe called it quits in 1999, but reunited before (like at Merge XX). The band is on board for a few Archers of Loaf shows and will also play Hopscotch this year, joining an eclectic lineup of everything from Altar of Plagues to The Jesus & Mary Chain.

Check out some Pipe material and all tour dates below.

White Denim in Austin in January (more by Tim Griffin)
White Denim

Last month we mentioned that White Denim have an upcoming NYC show happening on April 13 at Bowery Ballroom. It's since been announced that the show is part of a full tour which also includes a late show happening that same night at Bowery Ballroom and a Hoboken, NJ show happening one day later at Maxwell's (4/14). Yellow Ostrich @ Knitting Factory
Yellow Ostrich

As far as BrooklynVegan shows were concerned, we started out this year's CMJ in a lowkey manner with a free Thursday day show at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. We Were Promised Jetpacks, announced that same day, headlined the show that began with a set by Yellow Ostrich at 12:30pm.

Though they didn't play acoustic like they did the night before at the FatCat CMJ showcase at Mercury Lounge, WWPJ mixed it up by performing as a three-piece since one of their members wasn't in town yet. Expect a four-piece at Webster Hall and other dates of their tour. Austin's Hundred Visions played their 2pm set despite their 15 passenger van being stolen from its parking spot in Williamsburg the night before. Luckily most of their gear was not in it at the time.

The whole day looked like this:

12:30 Yellow Ostrich (Barsuk)
1:15 Still Corners (Sub Pop)
2:00 Hundred Visions (unsigned)
2:45 Forest Fire (FatCat)
3:15 BOBBY (Partisan)
4:00 Main Attrakionz (Mishka)
5:00 We Were Promised Jetpacks (FatCat)
Those in attendance also enjoyed free beverages courtesy of HobNob Wine and PBR, and free snacks courtesy of popchips and Raw Revolution.

Thanks everyone who stopped by. Here are some pictures. More below...

Just hours before doors (noon!), we are excited to announce the addition of Scottish band We Were Promised Jetpacks to our free all-ages day party happening today (10/20) at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. Don't forget (for those of you that are 21+) we'll also be serving free HobNob Wine and PBR.

Maybe you caught WWPJ play an acoustic set alongside Forest Fire last night at Mercury Lounge? How was it? They kick off a tour with Bear Hands that includes a HEADLINING show at Webster Hall (!) in less than a week (Webster tickets are still on sale).

Listen to most of the bands playing this party via our Spotify Playlist. Get there early for Yellow Ostrich who reportedly killed it at Brooklyn Bowl last night.

flyre

Nothing like waiting for the last minute! Please join us for a somewhat low key affair this Thursday (10/20) afternoon at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn for an all ages, FREE, afternoon show featuring:

12:30 Yellow Ostrich (Barsuk)
1:15 Still Corners (Sub Pop)
2:00 Hundred Visions (unsigned)
2:45 Forest Fire (FatCat)
3:15 BOBBY (Partisan)
4:00 Main Attrakionz (Mishka)
That's six free bands (and we might add one more). No RSVP required. Just show up.

UPDATE: The Phantom Family Halo has sadly cancelled due to a family emergency. Yellow Ostrich has stepped in to take their place though!

AND to sweeten the deal (literally), we'll be serving free wine to those 21-and-over courtesy of HobNob Wines (who give away free MP3s on their Facebook page).

Prefer beer? We'll also have free PBR while supplies last.

You'll also be able to snack on free popchips and Raw Revolution bars while you watch the show or hang out in the venue's front bar.

Get there early because first 25 people in the door will also receive a rare BrooklynVegan t-shirt! (not many of these exist - we sold them for charity at CMJ last year).

We're getting a little techie this year too and have partnered with Spotify (our official official digital music service partner) and Sony Bloggie (our official video partner) for all BV CMJ events including the two TBA ones happening at Public Assembly on Friday & Saturday. Stay tuned for a BV video series coming after CMJ with highlights, interviews and special performances from the week (all filmed on a Bloggie). Listen to a playlist that contains four of of the six artists playing this show on Spotify now (Phantom Family Halo's recently-released four-song EP they did with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy included). .Stay tuned for more Spotify playlists throughout the week too.

Thanks also to Knitting Factory Records & Partisan Records for helping make this happen, and thanks to Zach Jaeger (Tonally Dude) for the flyer you see above. See you Thursday! Meanwhile check out Still Corners' video for "Wish" below...
