Don Giovanni Records had yet another good year, with solid 2014 releases from Nude Beach, Priests, Peter Stampfel, Black Wine, Crow Bait, Chris Gethard and more, and they've already got big plans for 2015 with new ones from Screaming Females, California X, Downtown Boys and more on the way.

Ahead of the label's annual Brooklyn showcases, label co-founders Joe Steinhardt (also of Modern Hut) and Zach Gajewski (also of Nuclear Santa Claust), and several DG bands including Screaming Females, California X, Worriers, Crow Bait, Laura Stevenson, Brick Mower and Mal Blum have given us lists of their favorite albums of 2014. You can check out those lists below.

The 2015 showcases happen on February 6, 7 and 28 at Knitting Factory with Nude Beach, Shellshag, Crow Bait and more on night 1; Cali X, Downtown Boys, Pinkwash, Worriers and more on night 2; and Screaming Females, Priests, Tenement and Vacation at the final show. Tickets are still available.

Sleaford Mods at their US debut (more by PSquared)

The Guardian has been sloooowwwlllyyyy revealing their Top 40 Albums of 2014, having rolled out the top 10 one by one over the past 10 days. If you've been following along, you probably already guessed their #1 by now, but if not you can browse their full list of 40 below. It's got a lot of this year's list regulars, and like many of the British publications have, it gives some major love to Sleaford Mods (maybe you caught their US debut in NYC?). Also The War On Drugs shuts out Sun Kil Moon once again (they're not #1 but close). Sorry Koz.

Hurray for the Riff Raff

New Orleans country band Hurray for the Riff Raff returned earlier this year with the album Small Town Heroes on ATO. It's the kind of consistently great country album that's certainly more indebted to decade-old styles rather than the genre's current trends, but it doesn't have a novel retro/old timey feel either. If you're unfamiliar with the album, check out the videos for four of its tracks, below.

Hurray for the Riff Raff already visited NYC a few times this year, like for Lincoln Center's American Songbook series and for a Central Park Summerstage show, and they've now announced a tour for 2015 which has them returning for shows on April 24 at Bowery Ballroom and April 25 at Music Hall of Wiliamsburg. Tickets for those shows go on sale at noon on Friday (12/12) with AmEx presales starting at noon today (12/10).

All dates are listed, with those videos, below...

Kevin Morby

Kevin Morby put out his second solo album, Still Life, this year which is another fine showcase for his songwriting talent and his appealingly weathered voice. It's maybe a little closer in vibe with what he did in The Babies than his excellent, mellow solo debut. You can stream it via Spotify below. Though he lives in Los Angeles these days, Kevin makes it back to NYC fairly often, and has played here a few times this year, most recently during CMJ. You can catch him again when he opens for Amen Dunes at Bowery Ballroom on January 22. Tickets are still available. Before that, Kevin will open for Strand of Oaks in Chicago on January 17. Those are his only listed dates at the moment.

Amen Dunes' new album, Love, makes Kevin's Top 10 LPs of 2014 which we've got in this post. He's also got his old bandmates Woods, Frankie Cosmos, and more. You can check that out, including Kevin's commentary and a choice lyrical quote from each, below.

NPR

NPR have posted their Top 50 Albums of 2014, and like it usually is, it's one of the more diverse year-end lists we've seen so far. There's a lot of the indie that shows up on many of these lists (The War On Drugs, St. Vincent, Spoon, Perfume Genius, Angel Olsen, etc), the hip hop (Run the Jewels, Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, YG, Isaiah Rashad, etc), the big-name pop (Taylor Swift, Mary J. Blige, Miranda Lambert), the metal (Pallbearer) and plenty of others, as well as classical, jazz, world music, a Latin funk band with an album's worth of Black Sabbath covers, and still more.

Check out their full list in alphabetical order below...

Rolling Stone

The Best Albums of 2014 lists keep coming, and now Rolling Stone's is out. It's hard to imagine anyone else picking the #1 and #2 they did, but that's Rolling Stone for you. It's also hard to imagine a list placing the new albums from Weezer and the Foo Fighters so high, but smacking buzz band Ought right in between them. And it seems random that YOB comes in at #50 when no other metal album makes the list, not even the critically acclaimed one by Pallbearer or any of the hugely acclaimed returns from veteran bands like At the Gates, Godflesh and Electric Wizard. Also, don't tell Jack White how much higher The Black Keys placed than him.

Check out their top 50 picks for yourself, below...

Uncut

We're just over a month away from 2015 and those UK year-end lists keep pouring in. Now British music mag Uncut has posted their 75 Best Albums of 2014. Looks like their winner is becoming a popular choice for #1, and the rest of their top 10 is split between real-deal veterans (Leonard Cohen [falling just a tad from his 2012 #1 spot], Robert Plant) and rising newcomers (FKA twigs). Elsewhere the list has a lot of the indie-related albums that keep popping up, a good deal of folk/country, more veteran appearances, and a certain opinionated UK duo who have appeared on every UK list we've seen so far and make their US debut this week.

Jason Isbell @ Governors Ball (more by Dana (distortion Yavin)
Jason Isbell

Sturgill Simpson has not been shy when it comes to talking about Nashville not playing a part in his new-found success as a country singer, but Wednesday night Nashville recognized, as Simpson took home the award for best "Emerging Artist" at the 13th Annual Americana Music Honors & Awards (he beat Hurray For The Riff Raff and Valerie June). The ceremony took place at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, and the night's big winner was ex-Drive-By-Trucker Jason Isbell who won best Album, best Artist, and best Song (Robert Ellis and Rosanne Cash were also nominated in all three categories). Check out the full list of winners, and listen to that best song, below. Catch Isbell on tour with Damien Jurado next year.

As you may remember, Brooklyn old time folk revivalists Spirit Family Reunion released their debut album over the summer and sounds more like something from the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack than something from their NYC borrough in 2012. You can stream the whole thing below. The band recently appeared on long-running NPR show Mountain Stage (taped in West Virginia) alongside Dr. Dog, the Mountain Goats, Nellie McKay, and Red Wanting Blue and that episode airs this week, check here for a station near you and look for the episode to go up on their archive next week.

Meanwhile, Spirit Family Reunion have a few live shows coming up, including New Year's Eve in NYC, playing Pianos with Christopher Paul Stelling. Tickets are $15 and include a champagne toast at midnight.

The band were also kind enough to send us their Top 10 LPs of 2012 and if you're expecting a bunch of Bill Monroe reissues on the list, you'd be wrong. Their list includes Ty Segall and Leonard Cohen who maybe they're going to see tonight at Madison Square Garden? Check out their full list below, along with a stream of their album and a list of all upcoming tour dates.

Spirit Family Reunion

Brooklyn old-time folkies Spirit Family Reunion will release their debut album, No Separation, on June 15. Steeped in the sound of old midwestern country and bluegrass and the rowdiness of other revival bands like The Felice Brothers and Deer Tick, Spirit Family Reunion fit right in with the bands they'll be sharing the stage with at this year's Newport Folk Festival. You can stream three tracks below and download a new one, "I Want to Be Relieved," which is making its premiere in this post above.

Spirit Family Reunion are playing a free show in NYC TONIGHT (5/14) at Living Room. It's their last local show before they hit the road for the next month, returning for a record release show with Hurray for the Riff Raff on June 15 at Mercury Lounge, the day that No Separation comes out. Tickets for the Mercury Lounge show go on sale Friday (5/18) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (5/16) at noon. They've also got another free show coming up as part of Celebrate Brooklyn at Prospect Park on August 4 with bluegrass vets The Del McCoury Band and revivalist duo Cahalen Morrison and Eli West.
