Rock Lottery 6Rock Lottery 6
Rock Lottery 6Rock Lottery 6

The 6th annual Brooklyn Rock Lottery will happen December 12 at Knitting Factory. The premise, as always, is this:

The Rock Lottery premise is simple, but effective. Twenty-five hand picked musicians meet at 10:00AM at the evenings performance venue. These volunteers are organized into five groups through a lottery-based chance selection. The five separate groups are then released to practice at different locations. The musicians have twelve hours to create a band name and three to five songs (with a one cover-song limit). The groups will then perform what they have created that evening in front of a waiting audience.
While the whole lineup of musicians involved hasn't been revealed, it will feature members of The Hold Steady, Guided By Voices, Swans, Autre Ne Veut, Unlocking The Truth, Moon Hooch, Tokyo Police Club, Weeknight, The Rapture, and Hurray for the Riff Raff. Last year's event was a lot of fun. Tickets are on sale and proceeds this year will go to to Daniel's Music Foundation, a non profit organization that provides recreational music programs to individuals with developmental and physical disabilities, ages three to adult in the NYC area.

We've got the premiere of the crooning, accordion-led first single "Home Was A Feeling," which you can listen to below.

Outside Lands 2015
Outside Lands 2015

Like we did a week earlier at Lollapalooza, BrooklynVegan co-hosted/presented/curated the Toyota Tent inside the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco this past weekend. We already posted some pictures which included the Friday sets by Speedy Ortiz and Natalie Prass. Here are more from both of those sets and from Saturday and Sunday too.

Saturday included live set by Waters, The Drums, Classixx and Hurray for The Riff Raff whose upcoming tour includes a show at Carnegie Hall. There was also live Q&A with Django Django whose live set was a major highlight for one paper:

The London art-rock quartet came in a close second to [Kendrick] Lamar, turning in a sensational set that surely earned them hundreds (thousands?) of new fans. The group isn't all that well known in the U.S., but that will change if they keep rocking the house like they did at Outside Lands. Indeed, just plan on being head over heels for this band in, say, about a week. Grab a copy of the group's new album, "Born Under Saturn," and the transformation could happen even sooner.
On Sunday DJ Rezound (aka Jamie Granato who was also our BrooklynVegan host for the weekend) started warming up the crowd at 1pm to get the crowd ready for a Q & A with Dan Deacon at 2:00. One of the last songs he played was off the new Tame Impala record, which felt good when an audience member later asked Dan which records he had been impressed by recently and he mentioned their new one. Dan felt immediate comfort on the stage, telling the crowd he and Jamie were an improv group and asking for suggestions. Dan waxed poetic about everything from human perspective (being trapped inside a painting) to hoarding (he is self-proclaimed). Lastly, he reminded everyone to not litter on the beautiful festival grounds. Giraffage drew a crowd that spilled out of the tent and had people dancing wildly to his brand of house, trap and mash-up. Shakey Graves left everything on stage with their performance, an emotive show that had girls running past security for selfies the minute he stepped down the stairs.

Hot Chip DJing the tent
Outside Lands 2015

With 15 years and six albums behind them, Hot Chip took to the main stage with an army of synths prepared to get the audience moving with their fusion of disco, pop and hip-hop. Tracks like "I Feel Better," "One Life Stand" and "Over and Over" had the audience dancing along to the band's makeshift choreographed moves. [Billboard]
METZ stopped by the Toyota Tent for a picture, and Rezound DJ'd more while Hot Chip finished their main stage performance and walked over to our tent for their own DJ set. After a fun set of old and new classics, Alex Bleeker and The Freaks took the stage to play a set of all new material that sounded great. They were jazzed up from their performance earlier that day of Grateful Dead covers where original Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann took the stage with them on the 20th anniversary of Jerry Garcia's death (Bill has two shows coming up at MSG with actual Grateful Dead members).

More pictures from the whole weekend continue below...

Nelsonville Music Festival

This year's edition of the Nelsonville Music Festival takes place from May 28-31 in Nelsonville, Ohio. The lineup features The Flaming Lips, St. Vincent, Built To Spill, The Black Lips, Merle Haggard, Mavis Staples, Lucero, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Oblivians, Ryley Walker and many more. Tickets for the festival are on sale now, with four-day and single-day passes both available. Kids under 12 get in free, and there are activities for children at the fest too.

Folk music has always been a key focus for the festival, but as you can see the lineup is pretty diverse. The fest is tucked away in the woods, which is a pretty great environment for this kind of stuff, and there's usually a chance to see artists play intimate acoustic sets in the No-Fi Cabin too. If you're coming from NYC, it's just about a 9-hour drive, and you can camp there.

Check out the lineup in full along with a video of last year's headliner Dinosaur Jr. playing the festival, below...

Sleaford Mods at their US debut (more by PSquared)

The Guardian has been sloooowwwlllyyyy revealing their Top 40 Albums of 2014, having rolled out the top 10 one by one over the past 10 days. If you've been following along, you probably already guessed their #1 by now, but if not you can browse their full list of 40 below. It's got a lot of this year's list regulars, and like many of the British publications have, it gives some major love to Sleaford Mods (maybe you caught their US debut in NYC?). Also The War On Drugs shuts out Sun Kil Moon once again (they're not #1 but close). Sorry Koz.

Hurray for the Riff Raff

New Orleans country band Hurray for the Riff Raff returned earlier this year with the album Small Town Heroes on ATO. It's the kind of consistently great country album that's certainly more indebted to decade-old styles rather than the genre's current trends, but it doesn't have a novel retro/old timey feel either. If you're unfamiliar with the album, check out the videos for four of its tracks, below.

Hurray for the Riff Raff already visited NYC a few times this year, like for Lincoln Center's American Songbook series and for a Central Park Summerstage show, and they've now announced a tour for 2015 which has them returning for shows on April 24 at Bowery Ballroom and April 25 at Music Hall of Wiliamsburg. Tickets for those shows go on sale at noon on Friday (12/12) with AmEx presales starting at noon today (12/10).

All dates are listed, with those videos, below...

Kevin Morby

Kevin Morby put out his second solo album, Still Life, this year which is another fine showcase for his songwriting talent and his appealingly weathered voice. It's maybe a little closer in vibe with what he did in The Babies than his excellent, mellow solo debut. You can stream it via Spotify below. Though he lives in Los Angeles these days, Kevin makes it back to NYC fairly often, and has played here a few times this year, most recently during CMJ. You can catch him again when he opens for Amen Dunes at Bowery Ballroom on January 22. Tickets are still available. Before that, Kevin will open for Strand of Oaks in Chicago on January 17. Those are his only listed dates at the moment.

Amen Dunes' new album, Love, makes Kevin's Top 10 LPs of 2014 which we've got in this post. He's also got his old bandmates Woods, Frankie Cosmos, and more. You can check that out, including Kevin's commentary and a choice lyrical quote from each, below.

NPR have posted their Top 50 Albums of 2014, and like it usually is, it's one of the more diverse year-end lists we've seen so far. There's a lot of the indie that shows up on many of these lists (The War On Drugs, St. Vincent, Spoon, Perfume Genius, Angel Olsen, etc), the hip hop (Run the Jewels, Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, YG, Isaiah Rashad, etc), the big-name pop (Taylor Swift, Mary J. Blige, Miranda Lambert), the metal (Pallbearer) and plenty of others, as well as classical, jazz, world music, a Latin funk band with an album's worth of Black Sabbath covers, and still more.

Check out their full list in alphabetical order below...

Rolling Stone

The Best Albums of 2014 lists keep coming, and now Rolling Stone's is out. It's hard to imagine anyone else picking the #1 and #2 they did, but that's Rolling Stone for you. It's also hard to imagine a list placing the new albums from Weezer and the Foo Fighters so high, but smacking buzz band Ought right in between them. And it seems random that YOB comes in at #50 when no other metal album makes the list, not even the critically acclaimed one by Pallbearer or any of the hugely acclaimed returns from veteran bands like At the Gates, Godflesh and Electric Wizard. Also, don't tell Jack White how much higher The Black Keys placed than him.

Check out their top 50 picks for yourself, below...

We're just over a month away from 2015 and those UK year-end lists keep pouring in. Now British music mag Uncut has posted their 75 Best Albums of 2014. Looks like their winner is becoming a popular choice for #1, and the rest of their top 10 is split between real-deal veterans (Leonard Cohen [falling just a tad from his 2012 #1 spot], Robert Plant) and rising newcomers (FKA twigs). Elsewhere the list has a lot of the indie-related albums that keep popping up, a good deal of folk/country, more veteran appearances, and a certain opinionated UK duo who have appeared on every UK list we've seen so far and make their US debut this week.

Check out the full list below...
