The nine nominees are: Jeff Beck, Chic, Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Metallica, Run-D.M.C., the Stooges, War, and Bobby Womack. Ballots will be sent to more than 500 voters, who will select artists to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the 24th Annual Induction Ceremony on April 4 at historic Public Hall in Cleveland. For the first time, tickets to the ceremony will be made available to the public.

"In the three-year history of this festival, no act has ever been late - not even by a few minutes. It always impressed me that the artists maintained enough professionalism to be on time and the organizers insisted on a tight schedule.Lil Wayne's late set cut into Iggy Pop's regularly scheduled set time on a different stage, but Bao also managed to catch at least parts of both of them. Iggy Pop played a show in NYC the same weekend. Still no word on his gear. More Baltimore pictures below...So who does Lil Wayne think he is?
His scheduled start time was 3:50 p.m. Around that time, a roadie came out to test a guitar. Not a good sign....
...So, finally, just past 4:30, His Highness appeared, walking onto the stage in a tight white T-shirt, black jeans, shades and a University of Texas baseball cap as if he had all the time in the world. Without anything resembling an apology, Wayne started rapping along to the pre-recorded version of "Full Clip," his jeans already halfway down his thighs....
...With that, he announced he was going to "blow ya alls minds," the radio friendly hook of "Lollipop" began and Kanye West - on deck for tonight's closing slot - raced out to rap a few verses....
...I did make it down to the other stage in time to see Iggy Pop, plastered in sweat from head to toe and, as usual, displaying his unbelievably ripped torso (dude is 61!!)." [MyTimesDispatch.com]

Ed Droste @ Lollapalooza 2008 (by Bao Nguyen) (Zach shot them too)

Currently on tour with Radiohead, Grizzly Bear's next NYC-area shows are this Friday at the All Points West Festival and the very next night at Music Hall of Williamsburg. I sent Grizzly Bear frontman Ed Droste a few quick questions to see how he was doing....
---
How is the Radiohead tour going? How was Lollapalooza? Any good stories?
Ed: It's been so amazing. It's definitely an entirely new experience for us, we aren't used to, and will likely never play spaces this big again, and we're still getting our festival legs. As many people might imagine our sound isn't exactly catered to a massive outdoor setting, but we are giving it our best. Playing Montreal was insane, the biggest crowd we've ever played for, about 30K people actually in the pouring rain, just incredibly amped up for Radiohead. It was extremely surreal. A rainbow came out as well at one point.
Paul Simon or Radiohead?...

Montreal police have found the truck stolen Monday from American punk icon Iggy Pop and his band the Stooges, but tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment is still missing. The Montreal gig was part of Osheaga. NYC is Friday. They are also playing the Baltimore Virgin Festival this weekend. The abandoned truck was found late Tuesday afternoon at the corner of Saint-Marc Street and René Lévesque Boulevard, said police spokeswoman Anie Lemieux.
"All the equipment was missing -- or almost," Lemieux said. "I think there were a few mike stands that stayed in the truck. Investigators are going to look for any elements that can help them try to find possible suspects.
"Are there any fingerprints in the car? Were any elements left on the scene that might help them find possible leads in this case?" Lemieux said investigators are also looking for witnesses....
...Almost immediately after the theft, the band vowed to continue with the North American leg of its tour, including Wednesday's gig in Toronto. CBC-TV accompanied Watt to a Toronto guitar store on Tuesday as he borrowed some replacement instruments.[CBCNews]

Osheaga (Vero.b)

Osheaga, the outdoor music festival in Montreal, celebrated its third birthday this weekend with a bevy of local acts, some emerging talent, and great live performers. Day one (Sunday August 3rd) of the festival was also one of the most hectic musical days in recent [Montreal] memory. The week long Francophone music festival, FrancoFolies, concluded the same day with a performance by former Osheaga artist Malajube, and Wolf Parade (another former Osheaga performer) finished a tour downtown with their first Montreal performance since the release of At Mount Zoomer....

Fatboy Slim's new project is called "THE BRIGHTON PORT AUTHORITY". David Byrne and Dizzee Rascal sing on a song and you can hear it ("Toe Jam") at MySpace.
David is also working with The Dirty Projectors
I recorded a couple of songs Sunday and Monday with the band Dirty Projectors for an upcoming Red Hot project. Red Hot puts out compilation albums to benefit AIDS research and I've been on a few of them since they started in 1990. So, who's on this one? Feist, Sufjan Stevens, Grizzly Bear, Sharon Jones, The Decembrists, The National -- jeez, what a lineup!THIS WEEKEND: "Playing the Building" opens in NYC!
Anyways, I like what Dave Longstreth and Dirty Projectors are doing, although part of what attracts me to them is something I can't exactly place, can't figure out. Their music has familiar elements, yet often sounds like pop music by someone who has read about the form, but never heard it, and then handed the essential building blocks to make some songs. That's not actually true though, as Dave made plenty of jokes about music while we were working --he has a deep knowledge of tunes and their respective artists. But the band's music remains completely strange and oddly familiar at the same time. I'd been told more than once that we should all work together, and it seems the suggestion was fated to be realized.
For one song, Dave L sent me a demo by email that he had recorded in a Vienna hotel room on tour. I did my best to figure out the chords and the tempo, and record my own version, for which I then wrote the words. We didn't end up using my recorded version; but the words, and my somewhat straightened out version of the melody, came in handy. [David Byrne]

Though the initial lineup has been announced for some time, more bands were recently added to the 3rd Annual Osheaga Music Festival (August 3 & 4, 2008). Spiritualized and The Kills are new additions to the Montreal outdoor music extravaganza that will be headlined by The Killers (on Day 1) and Jack Johnson (on Day 2). Other acts scheduled to appear include Iggy and the Stooges, Cat Power, The Go! Team, MGMT, and Plants and Animals.

"People have eagerly awaited our lineup, and now everyone can see that we've achieved the 'Whoa!' factor," said Virgin Mobile Festival concert producer and I.M.P. Chairman Seth Hurwitz. "Our job is that of a curator, finding only the absolute best acts for the most discerning of audiences. We want people to count on us every year for an amazing lineup from start to finish. When fans buy their tickets to the Virgin Mobile Festival, they know they are going to have a great time, be well-treated, and see the best acts in the world, which is why they come back."Current lineup below....
"This is an incredible event for music fans, our partners and customers, as well as a tremendous introduction to our brand," said Bob Stohrer, Chief Marketing Officer, Virgin Mobile USA. "The lineup once again is awesome and, like most things 'Virgin,' it's more than just a concert, but two days full of unexpected and interactive happenings. This year, we have also added the creation of a special edition Virgin Mobile Festival Wild Card handset from Kyocera Wireless, the premier handset sponsor of the event for the past three years."
Hurwitz noted that more artists will be added. "Our bill is really strong now," he said, "but in the last two years, acts came along at the last minute that I had to pass on as the lineup was set in stone. This year I'm adding a new element of keeping a couple of choice slots open so I can take advantage of new opportunities over the next few months."

As someone who:
- missed Daft Punk's show in Coney Island
- missed Muse's show at MSG (not a huge Muse fan, but people keep saying you HAVE to see them live)
- missed Rage Against the Machine at Coachella and Rock the Bells (honestly not dying to see them again, but kind of want to too)
- has seen the reunited Iggy Pop & The Stooges, and think they're awesome, and would love to see them perform their classic album Fun House from start to finish (like they did in London in 2005)
- likes to see shows by artists like M.I.A., Ghostface, Mastodon, Blonde Redhead, and Gogol Bordello
- likes to roll in Sin City and play the nickel slots 'till the sun comes up...
P.S. This Thursday August 16th is the 30th anniversary of Elvis' death.
