Willie Nelson / Neil Young / Mavis Staples / Kacey Musgraves
Kacey Musgraves' most affecting songs, like the young Texan's breakout hit "Merry 'Go Round" -- or the majority of her recent Pageant Material LP, for that matter -- flip stereotypes on their ass. She may play the part of the down-home country girl when appropriate, but there's fire in this gal's belly. Seeing her sport a frilly, baby blue prom-like dress in front of a backing band in bright pink Nudie suits was only too fitting: She baited the Farm Aid crowd into thinking she was an innocent lady before belting out the truth. "I ain't pageant material/I'm always higher than my hair," she sang when performing her new LP's title track, smirking extra wide before closing out her breezy afternoon set with a foot-stomping take on Nancy Sinatra's outta-my-way-silly-boy anthem, "These Boots Are Made for Walkin.'" [Rolling Stone]Farm Aid 2015, now in its 30th year, went down on Saturday (9/19) in Chicago with sets from founders Neil Young, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp, plus Mavis Staples, Kacey Musgraves, Old Crow Medicine Show, Willie's sons and Neil's collaborators Promise of the Real, and more (including... Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson and Imagine Dragons).

The Flaming Lips in San Francisco on Halloween (more by Chris Tuite)
The Flaming Lips, Lauryn Hill, Tegan & Sara, Cold War Kids and Cake are among the artists announced for the next Amnesty International Human Rights Concert, which takes place this year at Brooklyn's Barclays Center on February 5. The concert also features Colbie Caillat, Imagine Dragons, The Fray, and other special guests. Tickets go on sale Saturday (1/11) at 10 AM with an AmEx presale starting Thursday (1/9) at 10 AM and an Internet presale starting Friday (1/10) at 10 AM.
Some background on the Amnesty concerts, via press release:
Twenty-five years after its initial concert series, which featured U2, Sting, Lou Reed and others, Amnesty International is bringing back the concert - with a digital twist - to raise awareness about human rights to a new generation. The Amnesty International Bringing Human Rights Home concert will use technology to connect the music and message in real time from the stage of the Barclays Center to activists across the globe.Watch some recent Flaming Lips and Lauryn Hill videos below...
"The fight for global human rights begins at home," said Steven W. Hawkins, executive director for Amnesty International USA. "This concert is part of an evolving conversation about human rights that grounds the universal struggle for dignity and freedom in the injustices we see every day in our own backyard in the United States. We're bringing back the concerts to show a new generation of activists how to stand up for justice at home and abroad - whether it is fighting for the right to voice dissent peacefully on social networks or in the streets, protecting the rights of women and girls, or standing in solidarity with individuals persecuted for who they are or what they believe."
Questlove of The Roots at Brooklyn Bowl (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
We just mentioned that Red Hot Chili Peppers will play a WFAN-presented show at Barclays Center on February 1, and since we last spoke it's been announced that the RHCP show is part of a number of pre-Super Bowl shows happening in NYC before the game happens on February 2 at MetLife Stadium.
A few of those shows happen on the Bud Light Hotel, aka a heavily-branded cruise ship in the Hudson River that will be hosting festivities for the weekend. One of those happens on January 30 with The Roots, Run DMC, Busta Rhymes and more guests TBA.
Another one happens on February 1 with the Foo Fighters and Zac Brown Band, whose new album was produced by Dave Grohl.
CBS also reports that for the week leading up to the Super Bowl, Times Square will be on lockdown: "Starting at midnight on Jan. 26 through Feb. 1, Broadway from 33d Street to 48th Street will be closed to vehicles. In addition, 41st Street will be closed from 9 a.m. to midnight."
The performer for this year's halftime show is Bruno Mars. All Bud Light Hotel concerts are listed below...

Cloud Nothings at BV-SXSW 2013 (more by Sarah Frankie Linder)
As discussed, the Jay Z-curated Budweiser Made In America Festival is returning this weekend to Philly's Benjamin Franklin Parkway (8/31-9/1), and the mostly pop/rap/R&B festival just got a little more, um... punk. Aside from the fact that it already included The Gaslight Anthem (who are pretty much a festival regular by now anyway), the lineup now includes Cloud Nothings, Restorations, Balance & Composure, The Front Bottoms, Diarrhea Planet, PUJOL, and more. And you thought it was weird when Jay Z saw Grizzly Bear.
UPDATE: And one more: Wavves was added to the TBA slot on Sunday.
Other non-punk additions that have happened since we last spoke include Rudimental and The Underachievers. The full schedule was also recently announced, and you can check that out below.
Many of the artists playing Made In America also have NYC or NJ shows this weekend (or soon after), including The Front Bottoms, Diarrhea Planet, Rudimental, The Underachievers, Kendrick, Ab Soul & Jay Rock, AlunaGeorge, Haim, and 2 Chainz.

TOY @ BV SXSW 2013 (more by Sarah Frankie Linder)
UK motorik shoegazers TOY were supposed to play NYC back in March while the band were coming over for SXSW. The Austin shows happened (like at one of our SXSW day shows) but NYC didn't -- a personal bummer to this writer, as their debut album was one of my favorites of 2012. Good news, TOY will be stopping in NYC on their way to the Corona Capital Fest in Mexico City, playing Glasslands on October 10. Tickets to that show go on sale Friday (7/26) at 10 AM.
The Corona Capital Fest happens October 12 & 13 at Mexico City's Hermanos Rodriguez Autodrome. You can check out the line-up -- which includes Phoenix, Arctic Monkeys, QOTSA, Vampire Weekend, The xx and more -- below and tickets are on sale now.
TOY video and Corona Capital Fest flyer are below.

Two days after announcing the existence of the second edition of Jay-Z's of Made in America festival, here comes the initial line-up. Set to go down August 31 - September 1 at Philadelphia's Benjamin Franklin Parkway, look for appearances from Beyonce, Queens of the Stone Age, Nine Inch Nails, Kendrick Lamar, Miguel (who is collaborating with Kendrick), Solange, The Gaslight Anthem (who just announced two huge NYC shows), Phoenix (who just played MHoW and SNL), 2Chainz and more.
UPDATE: an initial announcement accidentally included artists from the 2012 lineup mixed in with the 2013 lineup. Those mistakes made it into our post but are now fixed.
So far no details on ticketing. Full line-up is below...

No audience makes for an awkward monologue
While Hurricane Sandy was hitting its blustery heights yesterday, NYC-based talk shows The Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night wtih Jimmy Fallon were set to tape Monday night's shows. Both went on with the show, but sent their audiences home to be with their families. So monologues, chats with guests and musical performances were all done...to nobody, which made for eerie viewing.
On The Late Show, David Letterman had Interpol frontman Paul Banks and you can watch him perform "Young Again" from his new album, Banks, below. No online video for Fallon's musical guest Imagine Dragons, but you can watch his intro to what was indeed a very special episode of his show, below.
