NYC death metal vets Morpheus Descends are on board for two North American festivals this year, Maryland Deathfest and Montreal's Obscene Extreme, and they'll play a hometown show not long before MDF. It happens May 10 at Saint Vitus with Malignancy, Thantifaxath, Imperial Triumphant and Ramlord, presented by our metal sister site Invisible Oranges and Signature Riff. Here's some of what Wyatt wrote over at IO:
Morpheus Descends is something of an underground NYC death metal legend, an early runner alongside Immolation, Malignancy, Suffocation and the like that produced just two EPs, a demo and one album before calling it quits in 1998. Though the band reunited on and off, they never recorded again. It's a shame, as those early releases are gems--pummeling and poised--and they are now rightly highly sought after. 2015 is when the engine gets going again for Morpheus Descends. The band will be playing Maryland Deathfest, the inaugural installment of Obscene Extreme in North America and, now, Saint Vitus. They're also recording a new full-length.Tickets are on sale now.
Malignancy kept it going through the 90s, and they top off the bill with Morpheus Descends as NYDM brothers in arms. Canada's Thantifaxath comes from a different end of the spectrum, and is responsible for one of last year's best albums, the bleak, wonky and claustrophobic Sacred White Noise. New York's Imperial Triumphant just released a new album of twisted and cavernous black metal that's been earning "game-changer" comparisons to Gorguts' Obscura, and Ramlord just released a new seven of remarkably melodic and unexpectedly lush crust.

Mutoid Man, the no-nonsense rock outfit from Cave In's Stephen Brodsky and Converge and All Pigs Must Die's Ben Koller, had their record release show for Helium Head at Saint Vitus with MANALIVE and Summoner tonight (12/13). The duo, who due to a geographical divide between members aren't likely to play often, are hanging around NYC to be the secret headliner at a BYOB warehouse party at The Omega Order in Brooklyn on Saturday (12/14) (94 Bogart Street). They'll be playing with Colony, HO9909, Imperial Triumphant and Vygr. Details are available at the event's Facebook page.
Helium Head, Mutoid Man's debut, actually came out back on November 29--it's a serious ripper built on a thick foundation of riffs and distorted vocals. Listen to it in full below...

Vattnet Viskar at SXSW 2013 (more by Greg Christman)
New Hampshire's Vattnet Viskar put out one of the strongest US black metal albums of the year in Sky Swallower, and here's a chance to hear some of it live before the year closes out. Vattnet Viskar is playing a couple of dates before 2014, including the Acheron on December 20 with So Hideous, Alekhine's Gun and Imperial Triumphant. Tickets for that show are on sale now. Vattnet has a couple of other dates scheduled, too and all are listed below.
Speaking of, New York City's So Hideous recently put out an album, Last Poem/First Light, and it's a doozy that blends atmospheric black metal and post-hardcore to epic effect. Listen to the whole thing below.
Imperial Triumphant, also New Yorkers, put out an EP of twisted black metal titled Goliath not too long ago. They also made a video for "Crushing the Idol" from their 2012 LP Abominamentvm. That video is a twisted nightmare trip into the dark side of prep school privilege. Watch it below.
Check out tour dates, streams and the video below...
NYC black metal psychopaths Imperial Triumphant have released their new EP, Goliath. The EP -- which features drummer Kenny Grohowski of Secret Chiefs 3 and the rhythm section of recent Relapse signees Pyrrhon) -- dabbles in both the obscure darkness of French black metal and the earthier approach of American death metal. It's also their second release in as many years; they put out their first full-length, Abominamentvm, last year. Goliath (cover art above) is available for free streaming and a $5 download on their Bandcamp; listen below.
Imperial Triumphant also have an upcoming Brooklyn show at the Acheron on 10/26. Joining them will be Maryland's Weed Is Weed, Toronto's underrated Godstopper, and Bloody Panda frontwoman Yoshiko Ohara, whose solo debut was recently written up in the New York Times. No presale tickets yet, but the doors will be $10.
Stream the new Imperial Triumphant EP, their extremely creepy new video from Abominamentvm (which we debuted at IO), and tunes from Godstopper and Weed Is Weed, below.
