Infest

The legendary Infest had a highly influential run in the '80s and '90s where they helped pioneer what eventually became known as powerviolence. The band first reunited in 2013 for a few one-offs including one in LA, another in Miami, Maryland Deathfest and Chaos In Tejas. This year, they played A389's 10th Anniversary, Damaged City, and over the weekend came to NYC for their first two shows here ever.

The band hit Acheron on Friday (6/27) with Magrudergrind, Hounds of Hate and Chain Rank, and The Wick on Saturday (6/28) with Paint It Black, Replica and Ajax. You can watch full set videos of their sets from both shows, along with their 31-song setlist and a video of Paint It Black's set, below...

Reagan Youth pit @ Punk Island 2014 (via the_alouth_band)
Reagan Youth

From the crustiest of street punks, to the tamest of ska fans -- all punk appetites were met at the 2014 Punk Island music festival.

Thousands of music fans flocked to the "Coast Guard" pier, a space located 100 yards from the ferry terminal in St. George, to take in the all-day festival. Starting at 11 a.m., 90 bands from across the country performed among seven stages.

All punk genres and variants were accounted for, including ska, grunge, hardcore (and all its subgenres), pop punk and early emo. It sounds overwhelming, but the stages were positioned close to one another and each served as its own genre hub. [Staten Island Advance]

Punk Island 2014 went down in Staten Island Saturday. Who were your highlights? Check out some videos from the free 'Make Music' event below.

Reagan Youth have had a busy two weeks touring the east coast, playing Punk Island, opening for the Dead Kennedys at Irving Plaza, and playing a show at Grand Victory in Brooklyn. Today, 6/27, tickets go on sale for another Brooklyn show, this time at Saint Vitus on 9/27 with fellow 70s punk band Angry Samoans who they also play at least one other show with that week: 9/26 at TT The Bear's in MA.

Meanwhile, speaking of Dead Kennedys, Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine's tour with the legendary Negative Approach (who played Punk Island in 2010) hits Highline Ballroom in NYC TONIGHT (6/27) with All Torn Up! (who played Punk Island this year, recently opened for Sheer Terror at Brooklyn Night Bazaar, and shared a bill with Reagan Youth at the Rock Shop).

Negative Approach and Jello is a pretty early show, so you might have time to head from there to see the first of two shows Infest is playing in NYC this weekend.

Speaking of Sheer Terror, they just dropped another new track from their forthcoming LP (their first in 18 years). You can listen to that with the Punk Island videos and dates below...

Infest in Miami, 2013 (more by Kris Alan Carter)

We mentioned that hardcore greats/powerviolence progenitors Infest were hitting the road, playing The Wick on June 28 with Paint It Black, Replica, and Ajax, and you can still grab tickets for that show. If you wanna catch the band in a more "intimate" space in the same neighborhood, it was just announced that Infest will be playing The Acheron on the day before (6/27) with Magrudergrind, Hounds of Hate, and Chain Rank. Tickets are on sale. That show will be nuts -- prepare for devastation. If you want to drink, consider parking yourself by the bar.

Updated Infest dates are listed below...

Infest in Miami, 2013 (more by Kris Alan Carter)

Since reforming after a 22-year hiatus last year, West Coast powerviolence pioneers Infest have been gradually working their way up the East Coast via a series of one-off dates: their first East Coast show was in Miami last March; the band followed it up with an appearance at the Invisible Oranges-sponsored A389 Bash this January, and put in an appearance at Damaged City Fest this past weekend. They will finally put in their first-ever NYC appearance on June 28 at the Wick, with support from Paint It Black, Replica, and Ajax. Tickets are on sale now.

Infest will also be venturing near the East Coast for an August 22 show in Cleveland. Warm up for the NYC date with their now-classic Live At KXLU session below...

The lineup and details for this year's Damaged City Fest in Washington, DC have been announced. The festival will take place on April 11 and 12 at St. Stephen's Church, with after-shows within walking distance TBA. Two-day passes are currently on sale for $45.

Unlike last year's edition, there's comparatively little crossover with the upcoming 2014 installment of New York's Alright. The big-name headliners at Damaged City this year include the reformed versions of Infest (who recently played the A389 bash) and Los Crudos, along with a host of other notables -- Boston Strangler, Rival Mob, Violent Reaction, Coke Bust, Priests, Good Throb, and more TBA. Check out the lineup to date and the flyer below.

The show, packed to the gills, also featured full sets from Insult, Assholeparade, Magrudergrind, Strong Intention, Shitstorm (mems of Torche), on-again-off-again grinders Maruta, Vaccine and more. The mega-gig was a precursor to the band's forthcoming dates at Chaos in Tejas and Maryland Deathfest, and followed a recent set of California dates that included a stop in Los Angeles.

infest
Not only has Maryland Deathfest (May 23-26, 2013) expanded with additions of Down (who recently played NYC), Melvins (them too), The Obsessed (!), Ufomammut, Deiphago (who is coming to NYC), Cobalt (as discussed), Evoken and more, they have also added a mostly-punk/grind/powerviolence stage too! The festival promises that set times will not overlap with the  Baltimore Soundstage, which will host an Infest reunion (!), along with appearances from Citizens Arrest, Converge (who is on tour this fall), Iron Lung, Full of Hell (who is on tour with Gaza), Sete Star Sept, Vitamin X, Magrudergrind, Kromosom, Ilsa, and many more. Updated MDF lineup, with the new punk/hardcore/metal stage, is below.

Infest split in 1996 after ten years of pioneering a style that would later be known as "powerviolence":

The band, while not coining the term powerviolence, were definitely pioneers of it. The Los Angeles quartet blended the ethos, speed and song structure of hardcore, along with the aggression and anger of bands like Negative Approach and Negative FX creating a style emulated by many and an energy captured by few. Joe Denunzio's vocals exhibited pure angst, with lyrical content about conformity, war, scene politics and socio-political issues, mostly delivered in an accusation assault. -[Last.FM]
Full lineup is below, along with vintage Infest clip and other MDF-related video.
