Ash Borer @ the Acheron
Ash Borer headlined its second of two NYC dates on Saturday (7/16). One night after hitting Tommy's Tavern, they played Acheron with touring partners Ruin Lust, as well as dark ambient band ITHI and locals Anchorites. Last night in Providence at AS220 marked the conclusion of dates for Ash Borer / Ruin Lust, who each were touring with releases in tow (Ash Borer with a new LP/cassette discog, Ruin Lust with a new demo).
Epic and atmospheric, Ash Borer played a fantastic set with fill-in bassist Mike from Ruin Lust/Fell Voices, as evidenced in the video below (their entire set, courtesy of UNARTIG).
Support was similarly fantastic, with Ruin Lust ripping a set of atonal blackened death metal anchored by jawdropping drums by Mike, ITHI laying down dark textures, and Anchorites bringing the blackened crust. Ruin Lust has grown considerably since my first experience with them; this Brooklyn band is now a force to be watched.

Luke (left) on stage with ITHI (more by Stefan Raduta)
You may know the name Luke Krnkr as half of the experimental noise duo ITHI (who recently played Utech Festival), but his other project Servile Sect is an entirely different, rancorous animal. Rooted in noise, Servile Sect contains Nhate Clmnt also of Ash Borer fame, and together the two form an unholy alliance that crosses boundries between noise, atmospherics, and majestic/caustic black metal. After previous releases on Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label, Servile Sect have released their latest LP Trvth, a limited-to-250 release out now, via Handmade Birds (an imprint run by R. Loren of Pyramids, Sailors With Wax Wings infamy). The LP was mastered by the great James Plotkin (Khanate), and we are proud to exclusively stream the entire second side of the LP below.

The inaugural Utech Festival went down over the weekend (on 6/11), in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It featured a deep lineup of bands that spanned the experimental, electronic, drone, noise, and ambient genres. The festival, spearheaded by the label of the same name, saw BV faves Horseback as headliners. Locrian (who produced the amazing The Crystal World) provided direct support, and the festival also featured Mamiffer, House of Low Culture (both of which contained Aaron turner of ex-Isis fame), James Plotkin, Jon Mueller, Gog, William Fowler Collins, Ural Umbo, RM74, and NYC's own Ithi. Pictures from the festival are in this post and continue below.
Horseback recently released The Gorgon Tongue via Relapse, a compilation of previous releases Impale Golden Horn and Forbidden Planet LPs into a single set. The band also recently posted a video for "Blood Fountain" which you can also watch below...
Hot off of news that their epic Sovereign Nocturnal will finally be released on vinyl via Vendetta Records, Velnias will return to the road to play a string of East Coast dates. The dates mean a return to NYC and a show on May 11th at Acheron with Ruin Lust (member of Fell Voices, their first show is on 4/20 with Caulfield), Lonesummer, and Ithi. $10 gets you in. Velnias recently dropped a limited cassette via Land of Decay.
Ithi is noise/ambient duo Luke Kranker and Joshua Convey. Stream their demo at their website and look for their new LP, The Persistence of Meaning, due on Utech Records in June 2011. Check out one track from that, "Imagination is the Ground of Being" streaming below. The track also comes from a free Utech digital comp that is offered in celebration of the Utech Records Festival at The Cactus Club in Milwaukee, WI on June 11. Horseback, Locrian, Mamiffer, House of Low Culture, James Plotkin, and many others play that festival too.
Lonesummer recently shared a pretty impressive split with Planning for a Burial. Stream that below in full, and download it for FREE at their bandcamp.
