JEFF the Brotherhood @ LPR
Pentagram headlined Le Poisson Rouge on Sunday night (8/21) with Jeff The Brotherhood, Valient Thorr and local addition ELKS, just a few days after playing dates on the West Coast as part of Power Of The Riff (check out the LA and San Fran pics). The LPR show is part of a string of dates that continue on 8/26 in Pittsburgh at Mr Small's before concluding at Sonar in Baltimore on 8/27. Pictures from the NYC show are in this post.
The day after LPR (last night, 8/22), Jeff The Brotherhood hit Matchless to play with Cy Barkley as part of his three show NYC tour that hits Death By Audio TONIGHT (8/23) and Cake Shop tomorrow. According to Rebecca Seung,
Cy Barkley is the man to know in Nashville, TN. Fronting both Cy Barkley and the Way Outsiders and the hardcore punk band Slammers with Jamin Orrall from Jeff the Brotherhood, Mimi Galbriez from Heavy Cream, and Josh Shearon from Cannomen and Cy's current band the Way Outsiders, he's like the Kevin Bacon of the underground scene in Nashville--it probably only takes three moves to get to him. But then, it is a small town and a smaller scene, so it probably only takes six moves at most to get to anyone. Cy also lives with Nashville's Dead founder Ben Todd and throws a few shows a month attheir south side space Glenn Danzig's House, recently hosting touring acts like Personal and the Pizzas, in addition to frequenting local favorites like Useless Eaters, Natural Child, and D. Watusi.Personal and the Pizzas arrive in NYC Friday.
ELKS are prearing to release their debut LP Destined for the Sun via Tee Pee on September 13th. Look for a new track to stream on BrooklynVegan in the coming days.

Cy Barkley & the Way Outsiders kick off a trio of NYC dates, their first ever, TONIGHT (8/22) at Matchless with "Bogus Bros" and DJ Thanksgiving Brown. But who are Bogus Bros... could it be that Bogus Bros are actually Jeff The Brotherhood? According to a post by Cy Barkley and hint by Jeff The Brotherhood, all signs point to yes. Jeff The Brotherhood played LPR with Pentagram last night, pictures are on the way.
If you can't make it to Matchless tonight, you have two more chances to catch Cy Barkley this week. Look for them at Death By Audio tomorrow (8/23) with Shingles, Enthusiasts, and Hunters ($7 gets you in, all ages) and Cake Shop on Wednesday (8/24) with Foster Care and Dry Feet ($7, 21+).

Oh man it's another crazy week. Let's get into it. Tonight's free SummerScreen in McCarren Park tonight is pretty hard to pass up. Not only are they showing the John Hughes classic Ferris Beuller's Day Off (which is 25 years old this year!) but they got Twin Sister to play before it. In addition to performing lots of songs from their forthcoming album on Domino Records, Twin Sister will also be debuting the music video for their single, "Bad Street." You can download the MP3 of that at the top of this post.
Speaking of MP3s, we've also got one up there from Your Youth who are also playing SummerScreen tonight (6:45PM) and couldn't be more different from Twin Sister. "What Smarts" is a new track from the local duo who are kind of proto-grunge punk. Catchy stuff.
It would be really cool if, say, Your Youth covered "Beat City" by The Flowerpot Men and Twin Sister maybe did Dream Academy's "The Edge of Forever". (Why has Ferris Bueller never gotten a posthumous soundtrack release?) Probably won't happen but one can hope. In addition to the movie and the bands, there's loads of giveaways and such.
The show I am absolutely most excited about this week, without a doubt, is Metronomy who play Hudson River Rocks on Pier 54 on Thursday. Metronomy's third album, The English Riviera, just got nominated for the Mercury Prize (sure to lose to James Blake) and got its stateside release yesterday. As I wrote previously:
The new record retains Metronomy's slightly askew, claustrophobic sound while broadening its scope. There's glammy funk ("We Broke Free," the Roxy-ish "She Wants"), a guitar pop ("Everything Goes My Way," a duet with Roxanne Clifford of Veronica Falls), waltz-time ballads ("Trouble"), and more typical Metronomy-style twitchy disco ("The Bay," "Corrine."). It's also got one of the 2011's best singles, "The Look."It's definitely one of my favorite albums of the year. (Their last album, Nights Out, was my favorite album of 2008.) The vinyl version comes with the CD which is a trend I would like to see all labels doing. Highly recommended. Watching a few live performance clips , I'm glad to see they're still wearing stick-it-and-click-it lights on their shirts that was a highlight of their old stage show -- even though they're a proper band now (they didn't used to have a drummer).
Also playing the Pier 54 show is American Royalty and Class Actress whose debut album Rapproacher is out October 11 on Carpark. You can snag "Keep You" at the top of this post. Do get there early for openers American Royalty who came out from L.A. just for this show. I caught them at SXSW this year and they kept me entertained on Saturday evening when I was basically burned out on seeing live music. You can check out their hodgepodge electro sound via their Bandcamp page. And if you want to see them again, American Royalty play Lit on Saturday (7/30).
If you want to keep the party going on Thursday after Metronomy, head over to Glasslands for all your sissy bounce italodisco soulclap free booze needs. New Orleans Vockah Redu is like Big Freedia but with more choreography and a subscription to Vogue. (Check out the video at the bottom of this post.) They also play the PS1 warm-up on Saturday. Also playing is Portland's Miracles Club, who played PS1 last weekend. Jonathan Tobin is DJing, it's My Open Bar's 5th anniversary, it's a party.
What else is going on this week? Sonny & the Sunsets are backfor the first time since October, playing Mercury Lounge on Friday (7/29) and Glasslands on Saturday (7/30). Have you checked out Sonny's new album, Hit After Hit? As I wrote previously:
Unlike last year's laid back and folky Too Young to Burn, the new album is more of a party --inspired by '60s pop and garage. Opening track "She Plays Yo-Yo with My Mind" cribs liberally from The Standells' "Dirty Water."Tourmates for this go-round are fellow Bay Area residents The Sandwitches who were described by Sunsets drummer/producer Kelley Stoltz thusly: "Imagine a 60's Girl-group is on tour and their van breaks down near a gothic castle high on the hill, Dario Argento invites them in to perform a concert for his tweaked actors in a big dark red room inside and, if the dream is right, it's the Sandwiches - they'd fit right in with those misfits and speak the same language. I'd like to be there to dance."
At least a couple of the songs on Hit After Hit (including "I Wanna Do It") are reworked versions of songs written for Smith's 100 Records project which you might have caught at the late Cinders Gallery last summer. Embued with Smith's (and fellow Sunset Kelley Stoltz) encyclopedic knowledge of pop and his wry sense of humor, Hit After Hit's a great little record.
Sonny Smith put out a record with The Sandwitches last year, so I'd expect to hear those tracks at these shows. Check out one of them, the twangy, mournful "Throw My Ashes from This Pier When I Die" at the top of this post. I caught Sonny last year when he toured with Kelley Stoltz and it was a great show. Sonny doesn't get enough attention i don't think, so do try and make it to one of these shows.
The Night Beats
Seattle trio The Night Beats are currently on tour with The Black Lips opening for sold out shows at Bowery Ballroom on Friday (7/29) and Maxwell's on Saturday (7/30). But if you wanna catch them in a non-sold-out enviroment, free of the Black Lips, they play Sunday night (7/31) at Shea Stadium with Sweet Bulbs, Dinowalrus, Liquor Store, and Yvette.
The Night Beats' stomping debut is out now on Trouble in Mind. I caught the band at the label's party during SXSW:
I got there as Seattle trio Night Beats were just starting. Never heard them before, but really dug their psych-garage sounds, and they definitely looked the part. They ended their set with a cover of The Count Five's classic "Psychotic Reaction," giving their version a little swing which made it their own.Check out "Puppet on a String" from their TiM debut at the top of this post. The Shea Stadium show is solid, I like all the bands on the bill.
Speaking of Seattle, Craft Spells are back in town, playing Mercury Lounge on Saturday (7/30) -- their first area show since playing here back in April. Live, they eschew the keyboards that are so abundant on their Captured Tracks album in favor of a guitar-oriented line-up which works just fine. (It's very Orange Juice.) They are young and enthusiastic and the songs are ridiculously catchy.
The band are on tour with Santa Barbara, CA's Gardens & Villa who are dreamy and synthy and danceable (kinda like Tony Castles). Their debut album just came out via Secretly Canadian and you can download two tracks from it at the top of this post. Also playing are local synthpop act Selebrities whose free downloadable EP evokes favorable comparisons to all sorts of '80s groups. You can download a free EP from Selebrities here.
And finally, don't forget about this Sunday's Beach Party at Beekman Beer Garden with Raveonettes and Eternal Summers. The Raveonettes new album, Raven in the Grave, is a slow burn compared to 2009's poppy In and Out of Control but no less enticing and I've always enjoyed them live. And Eternal Summers can do no wrong for me right now. This will be a very fun show, and likely the first where they might have to turn people away because of capacity so come early. Free!

I had my mind blown twice at Union Pool last night: first by the smoke-machine fueled power of The Psychic Paramount (modern instrumental acid rock? Incredible!) and then by Disappears whose new material written with Steve Shelley is groovier, a little slower than their pedal-to-the-metal first albums but equally awesome. (More Neu!, less Stooges.) They play tonight at Cake Shop. Get up close and watch Disappear's bassist lay it down track after track.
There are so many shows tonight! But if you want to see three of the best bands in NYC right now, head to Mercury Lounge for North Highlands, ARMS and Hospitality. All three groups are holding onto new albums that I am dying to hear. Hospitality were incredible when they played my final Sound Bites show down at Fulton Stall Market two weeks ago.
Avi Buffalo test out new material for their second Sub Pop album at the Rock Shop tonight. With Nic Frietas.
The Barr Brothers, who I really liked at M for Montreal last year, play Rockwood Music Hall tonight. They recently signed to Secret City, home of Patrick Watson & the Wooden Arms, Plants and Animals, Miracle Fortress, Basia Bulat and more.

The gear was stolen from JEFF The Brotherhood's van in their home base of Nashville last night (7/20). Keep an eye out! Hopefully the band will recover or replace the gear before next week when they play a free NYC show. They hit the road with Pentagram and Valient Thorr in August (and play LPR on 8/21, tickets). In related though much happier news, Valient Thorr has a new video for "Sleeper Awakes" which made its premiere at Metalsucks. All tour dates and that video is below.
Kingdom @ PS1 in 2010 (more by Zach Dilgard)
Speaking of Nguzunguzu, they played a show last month at New Museum with Kingdom, whose label their most recent EP was released on. Kingdom has shows coming up too including two in NYC. He plays a TURBOTAX hosted party on Friday, July 22 at The Cove with Distal, Shigeto, and others. On July 31 he plays a free RCRD LBL Rock-A-Way Summer party at Rockaway Beach with JEFF the Brotherhood and (the band named) Friends (RSVP required). Fliers for both NYC shows are below.
JEFF the Brotherood returns to NYC in August as part of their tour with Pentagram.
Kingdom recently revealed the track "Take Me" which will be released on July 26 via Fool's Gold as a single b/w "If You Buck." Naomi Allen of Electrik Red contributed vocals to the track. Listen to it at Pitchfork.
Friends, who are on the Rockaway Beach bill, recently made a video for their track "Friend Crush" off the 7" single that you can download/stream on their bandcamp. They also play NYC the night before the Rockaway Beach party on July 30 at Glasslands with Sonny & the Sunsets, The Sandwitches, and Carnivores. Tickets are still on sale. The show is the last of a Sonny & the Sunsets/The Sandwitches' tour which also hits Mercury Lounge the night before (7/29). Tickets for the Mercury show are still on sale too.

Meat Puppets recently finished up a tour in support of their most recent LP Lollipop which came out this past April. After a couple dates with Soundgarden at the end of the month, the Meat Puppets will take a short break before playing a few more dates this fall. Their last string of dates never came through NYC, but this one will on November 4 at Le Poisson Rouge. Tickets are on sale now. All tour dates are listed below.
Meat Puppet Curt Kirkwood recently spoke to JSOnline about their tour and Nirvana, who they played with at Nirvana's MTV Unplugged performance, and whose seminal album Nevermind celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The Meat Puppets recorded a cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for Spin's new Nevermind tribute album, Newermind. The album also features contributions by EMA (who has shows coming up soon), The Vaselines, JEFF the Brotherhood, Amanda Palmer, Titus Andronicus, Surfer Blood and others. The album will be available for free download on Spin's website starting July 26. Tracklist below.
In honor of the 20th anniversary of Nevermind, Universal is also releasing a deluxe edition of the album on September 19. The reissue includes a 4 CD/1 DVD boxset with rarities, B-sides, unreleased recordings, BBC radio appearances, and an unreleased concert on DVD.
Universal will also reissue 1991: The Year Punk Broke on DVD on September 6. The film documents a Sonic Youth tour with Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr., Ramones, Babes in Toyland, and Gumball. The reissue includes a bonus film titled (This Is Known As) The Blues Scale, which features live footage of Sonic Youth and Nirvana.

Jeff the Brotherhood followed and Jake kept getting shocked from the mic, so he put his sock over it to dampen the effect. Given how hot and sticky it was in there, that had to be kinda gross to put his mouth against. Nobody ever said rock'n'roll was easy. Or wouldn't involve singing into your sock.
Fucked Up soundchecked with the Game of Thrones intro song, which was really badass. It reminded me of when Slash played the Godfather theme at Guns shows. Damian seems to be on a workout regimen of powerlifting audience members to stay in shape. He also passed out waterbottles to the crowd to give him a shower, which had to be refreshing because it was motherfucking hot in that place. It seems to be cooled with a single air-conditioner in the back wall. It read 60 degrees, which I assume was celsius.
It was one of those shows that when it's over everybody in the front is literally drenched in sweat, and most of it other people's. Some guy wiped his face all over Damian's stomach pretty far into the set, and I could see Damian's gut sweat running off the dude's face after he did it. I honestly can't imagine ever being drunk enough to think doing that is a good idea, but whatever, it's a party.
Oh yeah, also, some dude was stagediving barefoot. Just for the record, dudes' feet are totally gross. If some guy is up on the crowd barefoot, and his toe goes in your eye or mouth, it is completely justifiable for you and your friends to stomp the ever-loving shit out of him to discourage any type of that hippie behavior in the future. Dudes' toes have absolutely no place at rock shows, unless you are taking your sock off to put it on a microphone......

As we hinted about 10 times, Fucked Up are in fact the special guest playing 285 Kent on Saturday night with JEFF the Brotherhood and Iceage. As previously mentioned, advanced tickets can be bought at Record Grouch.
Their billing on the Brooklyn show can now be officially revealed since they played their show at Terminal 5 with Dinosaur Jr. last night. More about that one later. More FU dates HERE. Their new video for "Queen of Hearts" is below...

Keith Morris of Off!
Like they will TONIGHT (6/23) at Terminal 5 in NYC, Off! and Fucked Up played a show together in Toronto on June 16th. The free show happened as part of NXNE, outside in Toronto's central Yonge & Dundas Square. It was headlined by the Descendents. Pics are in this post.
Tonight's NYC show will be headlined by Dinosaur Jr. who will be playing "Bug" in its entirety, and other songs too. And like in Northampton, brave Henry Rollins will do some spoken word and live interviewing on stage right in the middle of the otherwise heavy and musical show. Tickets are still available.
Saturday June 25th is the day that "special guest" headline the show with JEFF the Brotherhood and Iceage AT 285 Kent. Tickets for the show are on sale at Record Grouch in Williamsburg. "CASH ONLY! NO ONLINE SALES/HOLDS! DRAG YER ARSE TO THE STORE IN PERSON TO GET 'EM!"

Another date on the Pentagram schedule goes down on August 13th at Echo Park in LA aka the 2011 Power Of The Riff festival. The current lineup also includes Winter, Pelican, Trap Them, Masakari, Alpinist, Acephalix, All Pigs Must Die, and more TBA. Unlike last year, the fest costs money this time. Tickets are on sale. Singer-songwriter Goh Nakamura stars in the feature Surrogate Valentine which screens on June 23rd which will be followed by a concert at nearby Frankie's Lounge.
As previously mentioned, Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals) will be the focus of a film as well, as a screening of Seperado! on June 18th will chronicle his journey "from his native Cymru all the way to Patagonia to look for his long-lost Argentine uncle, the poncho-clad Welsh-Latin singer René Griffiths". Gruff Rhys returns to play NYC a few days before that, on June 15th at Mercury Lounge with Y Niwl and Brakes (Solo Acoustic). Tickets are still available.

Here's an interesting one for ya. Pentagram will hit the road with JEFF The Brotherhood (!) for a string of US dates in August. No word on if those dates will surface in NYC, but we'll keep a look out when the actual dates are announced. In the meantime, the newly Warner-Brothers'ed JEFF have added a show with a band (who can't be revealed but who play Public Assembly on 6/17) and another "Very Special Guest" at 285 Kent Ave on June 25th. Anyone know the bigger guest? We don't, but the date does fall smack dab in the middle of JEFF's tour with Fucked Up who play Terminal 5 with Dinosaur Jr. two days earlier.
no word on the release of Last Days Here, a new documentary that chronicles Pentagram frontman Bobby Leibling's addiction and his life in and out of the band, has a NYC premiere coming up at BAM. The film played at SXSW 2011 and you can check out a deleted scene from the film below.
Pentagram released Last Rites earlier this year (their first in 17 years!). JEFF is preparing to release their We Are The Champions on June 21st.

The above photo may or may not be of Montreal's Uncle Bad Touch in their touring vehicle, though I'm leaning towards the "may not". But don't be surprised if you see said vehicle parked in front of Mercury Lounge TONIGHT (5/10), as the band will play the Manhattan venue with The Growlers. Tickets are still available for the late NYC show. The Growlers are on a much larger tour that also brings them to Maxwell's in Hoboken on Wednesday (5/11)
After the show Uncle Bad Touch will get back to the business of finishing new material for an upcoming full-length (label TBA) and a 7" on Infinity Cat, Jeff The Brotherhood's label... which is now also Warner Brothers' label, sort of. Infinity Cat honcho Robert Ellis Orrall writes...
Just to be super clear, Infinity Cat is still a completely independent record label, distributed by ADA for the upcoming JEFF The Brotherhood release We Are the Champions. Future Bro-hood releases will be under the Warner/ILG umbrella. As far as the rest of the roster is concerned, we will continue to act independently, and we hope to build on that relationship, one band at a time.Jeff The Brotherhood is currently on the road with The Greenhornes and if you happen to be on the West Coast, make sure and pick up their limited edition tour-only split 7" referenced above.
We are in our 9th year as a label, and the Greenhornes/JEFF tour split 7" is our 63rd release. We are grateful for the support the Nashville community has shown us, and we couldn't be more excited about the future.
In June, JEFF will get on the road with Fucked Up for some dates. It remains to be seen as to whether a NYC date will emerge on that run (there's one in Philly), so meanwhile grab tickets for the show Fucked Up is playing with Dinosaur Jr and Off! at Terminal 5 in June.

The second annual Hopscotch Festival will go down in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, across 12 different venues with over 135 bands, from September 8th through 10th. The lineup this year runs the gamut of independent music... from traditional indie staples (The Flaming Lips, Guided By Voices, Superchunk) to southern-inflected rock (Drive-By Truckers) to noise (Prurient) to hip hop (Beans) to garage (Jeff The Brotherhood) to funk (Budos Band) to metal (Krallice), and everywhere in between (Swans, Rhys Chatham, etc etc). Hopscotch happens almost three months after Guided By Voices play a Brooklyn Northside Festival show in McCarren Park (tickets) which is one day after Beirut plays a Northside Festival show on the same McCarren Park stage with... Sharon Van Etten (though she may have been accidentally announced at one point, they officially kept her placement on the bill under wraps until after Saturday's Music Hall of Williamsburg show). Tickets for Beirut/SVE are still on sale, and another opener will be added too.

JEFF The Brotherhood played their second of two NYC dates at Death By Audio on Saturday (4/2), joined by their Infinity Cat compatriots Heavy Cream and Hell Beach as well as X-Ray Eyeballs and Colleen Green. Pictures from that show are in this post. For Heavy Cream, it was their second time at Death By Audio in around three weeks. The band also teamed with Ty Segall on their way to SXSW in early/mid March. JEFF played Santos a few days before where they shared a bill with an awesome cast including Screaming Females and Ninjasonik.
The Death by Audio show was special for opener Hell Beach who were playing live for the first time, and were playing a record release show. The band welcomed their new LP Welcome to Hell Beach this week via Infinity Cat (Jeff's label). You can listen to two songs below.

Welcome to the You Didn't Get Tickets to LCD Soundsystem edition of This Week in Indie. Or maybe some of you don't care about James Murphy's Last Hurrah, and if so you can consider this the I Don't Give a Crap About LCD Soundsystem edition of TWII. Luckily for everyone, this is another bonkers week for shows and there's bound to be something for everyone -- even if I don't write about it here.
Let's begin with what is my most-anticipated show of the weekend -- Destroyer, who play Webster Hall on Sunday (4/3). (Tickets are still available.) I have friends who are Dan Bejar obsessives, but I've always been more of a casual fan. Destroyer's new album, Kaputt, is a masterpiece and easily my favorite of 2011 so far. Gone are the chintzy synths and thin production, replaced by glorious '80s widescreen pop that brings to mind (mine, at least) The Blue Nile and Prefab Sprout. It's got the scope and the arrangements I always imagine Bejar wanted for his songs but never had the means to make real.
It's also the first album I've loved in a long time that has this much saxophone on it. I don't think there's a song on Kaput without it, and it's of the variety that makes you think of a city in the rain. Maybe the saxophonist is playing in the rain on a fire escape somewhere? Or maybe that's just every music video from the '80s. Anyway, Kaputt is evocative of that era for sure but Bejar's unmistakable urbane style keeps it out of cheeseball territory.
For this tour, Bejar has assembled an "eight-piece Destroyer orchestra" to bring Kaputt to life on stage. My friend Toby (who does the blog The Finest Kiss) saw the show in Seattle and said, "Seeing Dan Bejar play with a small band or solo under the his Destroyer moniker was always good, but I had never been blown away. I knew I was going to hear the songs from his latest Kaputt, but I had no idea that what I would get would far exceed that very good record and as well as any expectations I had." That raises my expectations quite a bit, but it does make me more excited... even if the show is at Webster Hall.
This weekend also marks the return of Seattle's BOAT, longtime TWII faves whose scrappy underdog status may be in jeopardy. Pitchfork, who has barely acknowledged their existence in the past, gave BOAT's great new album Dress Like Your Idols a 7.6 (besting the day's big review by about two points):
"BOAT's fourth album, then, finds the Crane-fronted four-piece going through something of an underachiever's quarter-life crisis. On one hand, Dress Like Your Idols sees Crane, drummer Jackson Long, bassist/guitarist Mark McKenzie, and multi-instrumentalist Josh Goodman finally making their way into a real studio for the first time. On the other hand, that studio-- Seattle's Two Sticks Audio-- is already defunct. And the songs, like the album cover, are as inspired by the band's youth as ever, merging Stephen Malkmus's obliquely deadpan twang, Tullycraft's sugary scene-skewering, and Modest Mouse's "reptile boy" yelp. Where some slightly younger slackers have been opting for warped 1980s synth-pop, BOAT continue to love the 90s: an era when they didn't know, as per the rueful title track, that "the job you wanted doesn't exist." The result is the best album yet from a band whose style finally appears to be back in vogue, though its sometimes-bitterly sardonic humor still won't be for everybody."Now part of this may be that the '90s are indeed now fully in fashion again, but if DLYI is of slightly higher fidelity (none of their albums could be called low-fi), it's still what BOAT has done along -- make tuneful, smart, funny, occasionally anthemic indie rock. This time they're just wearing their influences on the cover of their album. Check out "Forever in Armitron" at the top of this post.
BOAT play The Rock Shop on Saturday (4/2) with Miniboone, Landlady and Creeping Weeds. This is the start of an East Coast tour that will have the band back in town next weekend for an early show at Mercury Lounge on Saturday, April 9 with Moon Taxi and The Human Hearts.
Also Saturday night (4/2) is the record release party for Obits' second album, Moody, Standard and Poor, which is happening at The Bell House. As a bunch of indie rock vets, Obits aren't so much set in their ways as they know what they like. You know what you're getting with an Obits album, but this new one has a little more breathing room than I Blame You, but rocks all the same. And anyone who's seen Obits play knows they bring it live, no muss no fuss.
Also playing the Bell House show are California's Tijuana Panthers who were last here in December. As I wrote then, these guys are pals with The Soft Pack and evoke a similar -- if less aggressive, more party-oriented -- style of '60s surf rock. You can listen to the entirety of Tijuana Panthers' self-released debut, Max Baker, via a widget at the bottom of this post. Good stuff. Tijuana Panthers also play Friday (4/1) at Pianos as part of a solid bill that includes the Sundelles (also playing Obits' show), Shark?, and Air Waves. That is an excellent Friday night option.
What else? As you may have heard, WU LYF are making their U.S. debut this weekend, playing tomorrow night at Glasslands (a show BV is presenting) which is sold out, and then Saturday (4/2) at Shea Stadium. To go to the Saturday show, you have to RSVP. And once you get there, you have to pay $10. I don't know what to make of this Manchester band -- they are careful controllers of their image and we haven't heard much in the way of released music -- but I am intrigued. Says UK music mag The Fly:
Far from being arrogant or appearing above their audience, tonight the band seem lost in their own world, having left the window open for all to see. Roberts is an intense and unforgettable performer, but his bandmates back him with a sound that flits between sparkling and cavernous with a rhythm section pounding a self-affirmed beat destined for far bigger venues than this South London archway. Connected to his organ throughout, Roberts only separates himself from the instrument to sip from a teacup between songs. The cacophony of noise he and his band make is not ground-breakingly unique, a meeting point of Nick Cave and Wild Beasts as displayed on 'Spitting It Concrete Like The Golden Sun God' for example, however, the fire burning inside Wu Lyf, a light that only shines in the souls of a select few, is a truly special one off.We'll see, right? The Glasslands show features Wise Blood, True Womanhood, and DJ True Panther. Saturday's will feature sets by Total Slacker and Wise Blood.
That's the bulk of this weekend's action. Actually that's not true, there's lots more but I hit most of the stuff I'm interested in. More picks, day-by-day, are below.
JEFF the Brotherhood
THURSDAY, MARCH 31
JEFF the Brotherhood are at Santos tonight. Their second album, We Are the Champions, is out sometime soon and features songs called "Ripper" and "Shredder" so you know it both rips and shreds. It does! JEFF rules and surely you've seen them by now and if you haven't...go to this show! And more reason to go: Screaming Females, Juiceboxxx and Teen Witch. They also play their NYC spiritual home, Death by Audio, on Saturday but I'm gonna guess that show will be sardine city...not for the squeamish!
PS I Love You and Diamond Rings are at Glasslands tonight which is also a highly recommended. It may seem like an odd pairing but both these artists love each other's music and you're gonna get their collaboration "Leftovers" for sure.

Pete & the Pirates @ SXSW Convention Center
"This is the weirdest gig we've ever played. I feel like we're in Las Vegas and you are all eating dinner." Pete & the Pirates singer Thom Sanders was remarking on the weirdness of playing the Dot Com Day Stage at 1PM in the Austin Convention Center. Folding chairs were set up near the stage, there were couches around the periphery, more the kind of place where some CEO reveals annual earnings than hearing some sprightly indie pop.
Yet Pete & the Pirates made it work, 'cause they're so damn good. (The bloody mary I was drinking probably also helped.) They charmed the pants off the room. We got a smattering of songs from their first album, and a few from One Thousand Pictures which is due out in May. This was a great way to start my final day of SXSW.
From there it was off to our final day party of the week, which we were throwing with our friends at the M for Montreal festival. The line-up was pretty sick, if I do say, with !!!, Weekend, Austra, Braids, PS I Love You, Braids, Trail of Dead, Owen Pallet and more. The weather had cooled off a bit making both the outside stage at Barbarella and Swan Dive more comfortable than Friday and it was a great afternoon of music. Highlights for me: Versus, who I'd seen the night before, a kick-ass set from !!! who I don't think I've seen play in three years, an abbreviated but great Suuns, and another killer set from Weekend. (Look for an interview with Weekend soon.) I wish I'd gotten there in time to see Montreal's quirky, funky Misteur Valaire who I heard were the perfect lead-in to !!! (editor's note: they were!).

Twin Shadow @ Fader Fort
A crowded backyard tent filled with cigarette smoke, free open-faced tacos (pork, chicken, brisket or veggie), a man carting a dolly of Lone Star cases through the crowd, and a pair of middle-aged guys picking a fight with each other on a Wednesday afternoon. "Doesn't he know I'm a ticking time bomb?" the offended guy says, a bit like he's not joking. JEFF the Brotherhood is playing too, which is more or less the occasion for all of this, my first show of SXSW 2011. The JEFF brothers aren't really the focus though, since they'll be playing a dozen other times this week, and most of the people are concentrating on the tacos, their conversations or their inability to get away from the door of the totally (did I say?) packed room.
In spite of that, the band is tearing through songs from Heavy Days and their new LP We Are the Champions, and between songs tossing out free vinyl singles into the crowd: "Those are going to slice someone's neck open," says Jake before slinging a few more across the room. They go into "Bummer," a ballady, Dino Jr.-style headbanger, that's one of the standout new tunes.

Ty Segall's entertaining and totally worthwhile band is up next, but the BrookylnVegan day show at Emo's is also currently happening, the highlight of which has to be the simulatneous staging of Cali punks Trash Talk (who went on before Kylesa) and Mister Heavenly (who went on before Surfer Blood). Mister Heavenly are a supergroup of-sorts you've heard about. On the inside, Trash Talk frontman Lee Spielman towers over everyone with the body of a scarecrow and a scary-as-hell perma-scowl; he smashes his forehead with the microphone a few times to draw blood. "Stick around for Surfer Blood," he says, before crawling into the crowd and standing on what I can only hope were someone's shoulders. People start edging toward the door. On the outside stage, Mr. Heavenly performs an appropriately lovely set, its two frontmen trading verses in their own styles.
After that, the Fader Fort brought Twin Shadow on stage, the bedroom-pop project of George Lewis Jr. that's become a wildly good live band. For an outdoor venue, the system sounded impressively balanced and clear - which would turn out to be a rarity at the festival. That was 'specially good for Yelawolf, whose songs sounded vital in a way that your iPod just can't do. With no crew to speak of, his solo athletics put in an early bid for best-of.

Later that night at Stubb's, Yuck and James Blake played what would be the first of several for both. Both did well on the big stage, a portent of things to come, vibing out in their respective styles: fuzz rock and chilled-out pop. Check out both of their sets for yourself at NPR- Blake and Yuck.

As soon as the Marissa Paternoster, front woman of Screaming Females, began hollering through the songs from the 2010 LP Castle Talk, the crowd took to moshing near the front of stage. Paternoster rules the stage with utter confidence and energy that seemed to possess the crowd. More than at any point during the night, it felt like a punk show with Screaming Females on stage. -[NYPress]One night after they rocked Purchase, Screaming Females headlined the Don Giovanni showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday 2/12 alongside Laura Stevenson & The Cans, Shellshag, Lemuria, and Byrds of Paradise. The show sold out at the door, and was the 2nd of two Don Giovanni showcases over the weekend. The first was at Death By Audio on Friday night.
If you missed it, you're in luck, as Screaming Females have added another pair of new NYC-area dates. First up, the previously discussed Jeff the Brotherhood show at Santos on 3/31 (tickets still now available) will now be a co-headlining show with Marissa and the gang. In addition, the band has added a show at Maxwell's on 3/30, though not a show of the regular sort:

We would like YOU to take a listen to "Lights Out" and then visually illustrate the song with your drawings, photos, collage, etc, (but we love drawing.) Be creative! You may illustrate the song however you see fit - create a narrative, create abstractions, or interpret the lyrics literally. Surprise us and most of all have fun with it! We ask that you provide us with a maximum of five drawings.
After submitting the images, they will be compiled into a slide show that will be projected behind Screaming Females during their set at the Maxwell's show, and it will be super cool.

Jeff The Brotherhood at Fun Fun Fun Fest (more by BBG)
Like last year, Jeff the Brotherhood are heading down to Texas for SXSW this year, but not before they finish a European tour that is underway now. After Austin, the duo will scoot up the Northeast, hitting Princeton University with Screaming Females, The Meat Locker in Montclair and NYC along the way. The NYC show is at Santos Party House on March 31 with Ninjasonik, Juiceboxxx, Teen Witch, and DJ Thanksgiving Brown. Tickets are on sale, and full tour dates are below.
Jeff's partners in crime Heavy Cream are also planning a tour around SXSW this year including a string of dates with Ty Segall. The two groups will play Death By Audio on March 10th. Ty Segall is also scheduled to play NYC two days earlier at Mercury Lounge (on March 8th) with Devin Therriault (tickets still on sale).
Ty Segall has announced two shows at SXSW so far, 3/18 as part of the Goner Showcase at Beerland and 3/19 as part of the Panache showcase. All other Ty Segall dates, Heavy Cream dates and Jeff dates, below...
It's 1PM in Texas and I just tied a bandana around my face before its time to get down to business. I'm not some outlaw out to rob a bank and hop on a speeding stagecoach; With the dry dirt and the hordes of kids in full-on circle-pit/floorpunch mode, a bandana or a surgical mask is a key tool in dealing with the clouds of dust that form around the chaos.
Chaos it was, off-stage that is, as the crowd popped for the likes of Suicidal Tendencies, Snapcase, Dwarves, Municipal Waste, Gwar, Mastodon and others on Fun Fun Fun Fest's Black Stage (where I spent a good bit of my time). Though I wandered to the Orange Stage to catch amazing performances from Cap'n Jazz, The Hold Steady & Descendents (among many others) and the Blue Stage to catch scorching shows from Big Freedia, Pharoahe Monch, Dam-Funk, and A-Trak, but it was the Black Stage where I caught pretty much every single band in action.
And that's a lot! One of the great things about the Black and Orange stages is that they are actually TWO stages each. A band will finish their set, and then on a stage right next to it, another band will line check and play. Times between bands varied (due to set time length and on occasion, technical difficulties), but there were moments when it was as low as 5 minutes between sets. More music and less downtime.
I started out my Saturday (11/6) with Black Congress, whose powerful post-hardcore impressed the early crowd. Hatred Surge followed, and even with a new singer in tow, the brutality has stayed a constant. Power Trip was next, and they do crossover-thrash that is less DRI/ Municipal Waste, and more serious/furious. Bands this good shouldn't play this early.
I'm very picky about sung vocals and punk rock, so it's sort of no surprise that I didn't care for either Bad Religion (who had no guitar in the mix for the first three songs), The Briggs or The Vandals, but I did enjoy what I saw of Strike Anywhere's live set (even though I am not into their recorded output). Dreadlocked singer Thomas Barnett is as energetic a frontman as I would see on the Black Stage all weekend, and really added tremendous power to the band's melodic hardcore.
Muncipal Waste (more here)
Strike Anywhere is from Richmond, and the band got a "Richmond represent" shout out from the great Municipal Waste that day. The band thrashed their way through one of my favorite sets of the afternoon, complete with thrown trash cans, a wall of death, stage diving, and an "execution" courtesy of fellow Richmond band Gwar. Gwar was fun in a kitschy way and delivered a great set later in the day, but the crowd energy and the precision of MW's live show was the most memorable.
Also on the Black stage were Valient Thorr and The Casualties who both delivered energetic sets, with the latter giving a crusty spin on the Ramones classic "Blitzkrieg Bop". The mohawk-ed kids went ape, and a wall of death, which was later faux-mocked by Municipal Waste when they initiated their own wall of death, was called upon by vocalist Jorge Herrera.
On the Orange stage, I managed to catch Woven Bones, The Appleseed Cast, and Jeff The Brotherhood. Jeff The Brotherhood is a staple of the small stage in NYC, so it was a bit odd to hear that guitar tone blaring out of 50 feet of PA speakers. Odd, but no less fun/impressive.
Along with Municipal Waste, Big Freedia was another one of my favorite sets of the day. Her nonsense odes to ass, ass, and ass-clapping were a pure sugar-rush and left 90% of the crowd in hilarious amazement and the other 10% with a big old "WTF" look. The Freedia set was tamer than her usual appearances, but no matter, it was still much fun and much booty-shakin. Dam-Funk would also get the crowd moving on that same stage hours later.
Seeing Big Freedia meant missing a good portion of Cap'n Jazz, who announced on stage that Fun Fun Fun would be their last show. Unbelieveably kinetic and powerful, Cap'n Jazz reminds me that emo is short for "emotional" and not just a psuedonym for pop-crossover. Mesmerizing and awesome.
Sunday (11/7) was a late start for me, so I got to the venue to see the tail end of Junius (who played 2nd, after Eagle Claw on the Black Stage). They're a band I'm very familiar with for their latter-Isis crunch-and-clean vocals steelo. It was surprisingly the next band that really got me going: Peelander-Z. With a large crowd looking on, Peelander-Z delivered an incredible mix of energy, stage presence, audience participation, fun and simple song-craft, and plain old good times. They played from the crowd. They stage dove. They led the audience in a giant game of limbo. They had a footrace. Totally fun.
I have a lot of recent experience seeing OFF!, High on Fire, Kylesa, Floor, Mastodon, and The Bronx, who all played the Black Stage that day. All gave predictably excellent shows though Kylesa in particular seemed a bit more energetic that usual (lots of Laura pogoing). It might have been the fact that FFF marked the end of their US tour with Torche and High on Fire, but they were particularly good on that sweltering Sunday afternoon. Floor was great as usual, though I enjoyed them more at Red 7 later that night... possibly because their music felt like a bookend to a great weekend. Both High on Fire and Mastodon's setlist delved into all of their recorded efforts which, as a long time fan, was comforting.
I'm not particularly scared of anyone, but Human Furnace of Ringworm gives me the shakes. His gravelly voice propels the rest of the Clevo-hardcore band forward and blew my mind that afternoon. They were one of my highlights of the day, and if I had only seen them and Snapcase on Sunday, I would have been content.
If my dad listened to modern music anymore, he would go apeshit for The Hold Steady. The band cranked out a crunchy Springsteen-esque set and sounded better than I have ever heard them before. Though they were killing on the Orange stage, I made the hard decision to bounce to catch the rest of Suicidal Tendencies' set.
Nothing against Mike Muir, but he isn't in the same shape that John Joseph of the Cro-Mags is (Muir and the rest of the known universe). No matter, it doesn't stop him from zigging and zagging back and forth on stage as the rest of Suicidal Tendencies runs through hits like "You Can't Bring Me Down" and "I Saw Your Mommy". High energy stuff; I can't imagine running in circles while trying to recite the words to "Institutionalized". Catch Suicidal and Cro-Mags together at Terminal 5 on November 14th.
If I was to pick two of my favorite sets from Sunday, the winners easily go to Snapcase and Descendents. Snapcase was brutal, technical, confrontational, and totally fun; the crowd gave back every ounce of energy that the band put in. From the opening notes of their third song, "Zombie Transmission" from Progress Through Unlearning, I knew that this was going to be a highlight. We need more shows from Snapcase.
Descendents, who we also need more shows from, are one of the few bands that pass my "no clean vocals in punk rock" test. Their songs are funny without being goofy, melodic without being overtly pop, and driving/hard when they want to be. Classics like "Suburban Home", "Bikeage" and a good portion of Somery, "Everything Sucks" and many of the highlights from that LP, and tons of others all made their way onto the setlist that night. And yes, the band made sure to fit in "All" and "Weinerschnitzel". Too fun, and though I left Mastodon early to catch them, I have no regrets.

Digital Retribution: When I last interviewed you, you said of the Dead Kennedys reunion, "I thought it was fucking pathetic, though, when The Dead Kennedys went out without Jello as their singer." What I meant to say instead of whatever monosyllabic witticism I spouted is: What's the difference between DK and the reformed Misfits, who GWAR toured with?With 46 acts spanning multiple genres, all worth at least checking out, and most worth more than that, playing on four stages in a 10 hour period along with side attractions like a bungee jumping thing and a mechanical bull, and with three of us at Fun Fun Fun Fest, it shouldn't be surprising that it took us ONE, TWO, THREE, and now FOUR posts to cover just the pictures from Saturday. Dave Brockie (aka Oderus): I think there is a big difference, but don't expect the original product in either. I like Jerry and I would rather have him out touring and having fun than have him working in his machine shop. You can't blame him for wanting to cash in on how great The Misfits were, and enjoy himself in the process, plus give all of his pals jobs in his crew, and show his kids the time of their lives! So in that aspect, I think Jerry and what's left of The Misfits is cool, as long as you don't go in there expecting to see Glenn Danzig! I feel Jerry has earned the right to do whatever the fuck he wants through 30+ years of dedication to this music. Jerry never lets up, he is always gigging. Whereas the Dead Kennedys thing was just a one-shot money grab. They knew they could get away with it, do a year or two, cash in, and bail...and also, The Misfits actually got away with replacing their singer, with Mike Graves, and did a couple of great records! That was when we toured with them, and that was great! American Psycho is a great fucking album!

This duo incorporates channel splitters (to fill out the entire tonal spectrum, and to avoid paying a bass player) through a Jucifer-inspired pile of amps, speakers, and doodads. It was big, bad, and beautiful, and with just two players on stage handling guitar and drums, it was dynamic, fantastic, and raw." [a review from Rochester]As you know, JEFF the Brotherhood headlined a show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday night (10/28). Support came from Ninjasonik, Liquor Store and ELKS.
JEFF, who have a new album on the way, were then supposed to open for The Zeroes at Maxwell's last night, but they got stuck in traffic and never made it to the show.
