The LOX at Best Buy Theater in 2011 (more by Brook Bobbins)
Brook Bobbins

Cypress Hill are playing their mostly annual NYC Halloween show this year on October 30 at Best Buy Theater, and they've got La Coka Nostra, Immortal Technique and Vinnie Paz joining them for the occasion. Tickets for that show go on sale today (8/8) at noon. Their only other date that we're currently aware of is Made In America LA.

Other NYC hip hop shows were recently announced too, like the previously discussed ones from Black Milk, Wu-Tang w/ Bone Thugs, Diplomats, Lil Kim & more and the recently-expanded AfroPunk Festival. Here's more...

Two days after the legendary Rakim plays Studio 48 (10/2) with Slick Rick, he plays 'The Bbg Presents The Noge 50th Year Benefit Concert' at NYC's Apollo Theater (10/4) with Big Daddy Kane (tickets). Both Rakim and Big Daddy Kane are also billed for the 'Hip Hop Hall Of Fame Jam: Legends of The Fall' happening at Long Island's NYCB Theatre at Westbury (10/4) the same day as the Apollo show, so it's not entirely clear how (or if) that will work out. Also on the Westbury show is Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, Biz Markie and Pep & the Soul Explosion Band (tickets).

Veteran New York trio The LOX (Styles P, Sheek Louch, Jadakiss) are on board for this year's Fool's Gold Day Off on Labor Day, and exactly a month later they'll play NYC again at BB King's on October 1. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Sooner at BB King's another NYC rapper, Fabolous, takes over the venue on August 23. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Statik Selektah

Long-running DJ Statik Selektah releases his new album, What Goes Around, on August 19 via Duck Down. It features tons of killer collaborations from Action Bronson, Joey Bada$$, Talib Kweli, Ab-Soul, Sheek Louch, Styles P, Snoop Dogg, Dilated Peoples, Royce Da 5'9, Black Thought, Bun B, POS of De La Soul, Sean Price, Pharoahe Monch, Freddie Gibbs and more. Get a taste of it from three tracks, "Alarm Clock" (ft. Ab-Soul, Jon Connor, Logic), "The Imperial" (ft. Action Bronson, Royce Da 5'9, Black Thought), and "Carry On" (ft. Joey Bada$$, Freddie Gibbs), along with the tracklist, below. Statik Selektah celebrates the new LP with a release show the day before it comes out at SOB's (8/18). Tickets for that show are on sale now.

There's a '90s vs Naughts party happening on the Luxury Infinity Yacht which loads in on August 16 at 10:30 PM on Pier 40 (353 West St) and sets sail at midnight. NYC hip hop vets Smif N Wessun and Buckshot will perform a brief live set, and music will otherwise be provided by DJs including Stretch Armstrong, DJ Moma, Young Guru, Meka, DJ Soul and DJ Tara. Tickets are on sale now and you can also RSVP for VIP. Flyer with more info, below.

Those are just a few hip hop shows coming up in NYC. You can also browse our 'Hip Hop' tab for more. What else?

Action Bronson at Irving Plaza in January (more by Dylan Johnson)
Action Bronson

Queens MC Action Bronson is currently wrapping up a tour that just had him playing two nights at Irving Plaza (night 1 pics, night 2 pics), and he's since added another show in his home city happening on March 26 at Best Buy Theater as part of Hot 97's Metro PCS Takeover. It's a co-headlining show with The Lox (aka Sheek Louch, Styles P, and Jadakiss), who just came out of release-hibernation with their "surprise" EP The Trinity which came out in late December (same month as "surprise" releases from Beyonce, Angel Haze and Burial). (We also just caught The Lox at a surprise show in Chinatown in January. So many surprises!) Also on the bill is French Montana and Funk Flex, and tickets for the show go on sale Friday (2/7) at noon.

It won't be the first time Action Bronson and The Lox team up this year. Both were just on an episode of MTV RapFix Live, which you can watch, along with the list of all Action Bronson dates (Sasquatch included), below...

The Harlem MC and king of nonsensical rhymes this side of Kool Keith, Cam'ron, made an appearance at a recent Kenny Dope/Solange DJ set at the Boiler Room party in the W Hotel in Times Square on April 25. The Dipset MC blessed the cowd with snippets from his classic "Hey Ma" and the Diplomats favorite "I Really Mean It." Video from his performance is below. If you missed the show, make sure and head to SOB's on May 30 to catch him, tickets are on sale.

Though the SOB's show doesn't feature any fellow Dipset members, another favorite hip hop crew have announced their return to the stage. The Lox (Jadakiss, Styles P and Sheek Louch) will celebrate their anniversary at BB Kings on June 17, snagging support from Funkmaster Flex. Tickets are on sale. Speaking of anniversaries and Jadakiss, look for J-A-to the mwah to play the Doo Wop anniversary party next week.

In other hip hop news, just two days after Cam'ron blesses SOB's, look for Chief Keef to headline the much larger space at Best Buy Theater on June 1. Tickets go on sale tomorrow (May 3) at noon.

Jadakiss at Best Buy Theater in 2011 (more by Brook Bobbins)
Jadakiss

Jadakiss is teaming up with Nas collaborator AZ and Smif-N-Wessun as part of an all-NYC hip hop lineup for DJ Doo Wop's 20th Anniversary Concert which happens on May 7 at Stage 48. The show also features Nine, AZ's fellow Firm member Nature, Mic Geronimo, and Royal Flush. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Jadakiss is also featured on "Hit Em Up," the new single from Tyga's forthcoming album, Hotel California (due out 4/9), which prominently samples C-Murders "Down 4 My N's" and was produced by DJ Mustard. In addition to taking its name from Tupac's Biggie diss track, it also features old Pac verses spliced together to create a "new verse." According to Tyga, although it shares that title, this song isn't actually a diss track itself. You can listen for yourself below.

Cruel Summer

After much delay, rumors proved true and false, and some uncertain info, Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music compilation album, Cruel Summer, is fully confirmed and will be out this Tuesday (9/18). Many of its tracks -- "Clique," "Mercy," "New God Flow," "Cold" (previously titled "Theraflu"), and his guest-filled remix of Chief Keef's "I Don't Like" -- have been floating around the internet for some time now. You can stream all of those and snippets of every album track below.

Though Kanye only actually raps on about half the album, his presence is felt throughout and Cruel Summer succeeds at playing from start to finish with an album flow, despite it technically being a compilation. It opens as huge as you expect any Kanye related release to open, addressing the album not just to his fans, friends or family, but of course, "To The World." The track brings together beat master Hudson Mohawke (who's been having a great year as one half of TNGHT) with R. Kelly and Ye. It immediately follows with the album's strongest track, "Clique," which features one of the best Jay-Z verses in recent years and a towering beat from Hit-Boy, who is also behind Cruel Summer tracks "Cold," "Higher," and of course you may know him as the guy behind "Niggas In Paris."

After it continues colossally with previously released singles "Mercy" and "New God Flow," we get the first track on the album without Kanye's voice, "The Morning." However, there's no lack of all-star rappers on the track. We get killer verses from vets Pusha T, Common, and Raekwon, and if guys like Kid Cudi and 2 Chainz are your thing, well they're there too. Cudi, though not the strongest of Kanye associates, does have a shining moment on the album though. Over a clattering beat in "Creepers," he delivers a solo vocal performance making for a rare standout personal moment from not-Kanye in the midst of Ye's encapsulating ego. That's followed by "Bliss," which sees the return of Hudson Mohawke to the boards and is the album's sole track with all singing, no rapping. A distinct contrast to the hanging out and freestyling feel of the closing "I Don't Like" remix.

Streams and tracklist are below.

Talib Kweli joined Res and band to form Idle Warship, at the BrooklynVegan Day Party on Saturday (10/22) before heading to the Duck Down vs Blacksmith showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg next door. Pictures from the BV party are on the way, but we have a set of pictures in this post from the show Talib Kweli played at the Mohawk one night earlier (yes he was in Texas playing a show after midnight the night before he headlined our show at 5pm in Brooklyn!).

In related news, Wu-Tang Clan (billed as with Method Man, RZA, GZA, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, U-God, Inspectah Deck, and Masta Killa) will also head to Best Buy Theater in the coming months, hitting the venue on December 18th as part of a string of live dates that will also include Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ on 12/15 and Northern Lights in Clifton Park, NY on 12/17. Talib Kweli / EPMD
Salute Hip Hop
Salute Hip Hop

The energy and atmosphere was so Hip-Hop in every way! The crowd roared as the legends of the game hit the stage. A top memorable moment of the event was the LOX reunion. Styles P, Jadakiss, and Sheek Louch all hit the stage and performed classic material. They all did solo verses as well. The crowd went crazy when Styles P did his verse off Rick Ross' " B.M.F." Overall it was a great night for Hip-Hop. If you were there you would have felt that love, that energy and most important, you would understand that Hip-Hop is not dead. -[MsDramatv.com]

Yo MTV Raps of 1990s exploded onto the stage at Best Buy Theater on June 30th, as Hot 97 hosted a lineup of hip hop greats from the era and beyond. Headlined by Talib Kweli, the show featured appearances from EPMD, The Lox, Large Professor, M.O.P., Keith Murray, Nice n Smooth, Brand Nubian, and many many others. Raekwon @ Irving Plaza (SANCHO PANZAA)
Raekwon

Backed only by DJ Symphony on turntables and Raekwon's brother Don P on vocals, the set could have used the energy of the other rappers who invade the album. Raekwon's set ran to 90 minutes, but it felt here and gone. It included the appearance of a huge cake in the shape of a purple cassette -- the original "Cuban Linx" album, from 1995, is commonly called the Purple Tape -- and an assortment of friends and business associates, either texting or appearing to smoke weed onstage. Two notable things happened, neither musical.

The songs came fast, one after another, without stagecraft or pacing. The set went back to early tracks by his old collective, the Wu-Tang Clan, touched on "Cuban Linx" Part 1 and settled in for stretches of the new album, including the scabrous, seedy "Gihad" and the imagistic, violent "Surgical Gloves."

There weren't as many Wu-Tang Clan cameos as might have been expected, aside from Cappadonna, who rapped verses on "Ice Cream." But halfway through, another member of the extended Wu family appeared: Cherry Jones, the mother of the Wu-Tang rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard, who died in 2004. She and Raekwon hugged, without speaking, for nearly a minute. Raekwon praised Dirty and his mother and then performed "Ason Jones," a tribute to Dirty on the new CD, with some emotional difficulty, his movements creaky, as if he needed oil. (He stopped the song at one point, shaking his head in sorrow, swearing and then collecting himself.)

Near the end -- after the duo Capone-N-Noreaga briefly hijacked the set -- Busta Rhymes, a longtime Raekwon booster, came onstage to congratulate his friend. Busta Rhymes likes to talk. Ten minutes later he was still there, praising Raekwon's rhymes and metaphors. Raekwon slumped against the opposite wall, looking humble, grateful and worn out. [NY Times]

That review come from Raekwon's show at Irving Plaza on Wednesday (12/16)

Mos Def was supposed to play Highline Ballroom last night (12/20), but the show was cancelled due to the weather and rescheduled for January 17th. Tickets are on sale.

Speaking of Highline Ballroom, Clipse has been added an opener for for the previously-mentioned Jadakiss and Melanie Fiona show happening at the venue on Tuesday (12/22) ("Concert starts @ 10PM"). Tickets are on sale.

Also Tuesday (12/22), is a show at Southpaw in Brooklyn:

GZA & Black Lips at SXSW 2009 (photo by Bill Pearis)
GZA + Black Lips

Still no word on a Gucci Mane/Beirut collabo album, but Wu-Tanger GZA has been hard at work rocking remixes and dropping collabos a-plenty. After appearing on a remix of Mando Diao's "Dance With Somebody" w/ Cadence Weapon by The Hood Internet (get that above), GZA has also popped up on another Hood Internet remix, this time of Salvador Santana's "Keyboard City". That remix inspired a second (a re-remix?) this time with Mr Green Skull himself, Dan Deacon.

Originally, GZA was featured over a remix of the song "Keyboard City" done by The Hood Internet. Now, Dan Deacon took that remix and dissected it into this an awesome blend of Vocoder / electro madness.
This collaboration was inspired by the idea of GZA and Dan Deacon working together and Salvador Santana a platform was set for more original material between the two in the future. GZA first caught wind of Dan Deacon earlier this fall and after a connection via their publicist, Dan ended up taking GZA and Salvador's remix and putting his own twist on it.
It's not the first time that the Genius has collabo'd with indie artists (he teamed up with Black Lips at SXSW, dropped mathematics on a Peter Bjorn & John's forthcoming Living Thing remix LP, and played with King Khan at FFF and elsewhere), and it won't be the last. So far we already know that Fucked Up and Devendra Banhart have contributed some original material for GZA, but now comes word that Health have remixed a track, Har Mar Superstar is on board and Kevin Barnes (Of Montreal) has also hooked up some science for GZA which will appear on his new album out in late spring of 2010. Look for it.

GZA also recently popped up on Fucked Up's charity single which is on iTunes now.

GZA appeared on the stupid dope Raekwon album Only Built For Cuban Linx Pt II, and now that the onslaught of praise has died down somewhat, that Staten Island representative is on a short tour to remind the haters why he rules faces. Count on support from Queensbridge representatives Capone n Noreaga (who aim to "blow holes in your Versace") as well as Queen Yonasda. The trio hits Irving Plaza on 12/16, tickets are still on sale.

Ruff Ryder, D-Block member and OB4CL2 contributor Jadakiss has also scheduled a show at Highline Ballroom on 12/22 with Melanie Fiona & special guests. Tickets are on sale. J-A-to-the-mwah dropped The Last Kiss earlier this year.

Make sure not to forget the previously discussed, Method Man / Ghostface appearance as part of the Hip Hop Legends series at BB Kings on Dec 23. The jawdopping lineup contains a veritable who's who of 80s-90s greats including Doug E Fresh, EPMD, Main Source/Large Professor, Onyx, Showbiz & AG, Masta Ace, Ed OG, "+ more TBA". Tickets are still available.

Dig on some videos below, including one of GZA with King Khan, as well as Raekwon tour dates...

Yellow diamonds in Cam'ron's ears, call them lemonheads
Cam

Cam'ron may be off of the June 26th Sneaker Pimps show, but he is still on for the show at BB Kings happening four days later (Tickets are still available).

Jadakiss recently released the long-delayed LP The Last Kiss as well as JUST released the new D-Block LP No Security. In addition, his cohort in D-Block, Sheek Louch, recently confirmed a new LOX album by the end of this year.
