Mike Watt & the Missingmen at Maxwell's last year (more by Lori Baily)

""hyphenated-man" is the name of my third opera, "contemplating the engine room" (1997) being the first one and "the secondman's middle stand" (2004) being the second...Hyphenated-Man is due on March 1st, and Mike Watt has posted all the lyrics from the LP on his site if you're interested in a preview. He'll be taking out Mike Watt & The Missing Men to promote said LP, and those dates include a trip to SXSW, as well as Maxwell's on 4/3 (tickets) and Mercury Lounge on 4/4 (tickets) (both shows on sale at noon today - 1/7).
whereas "...engine room" dealt w/my pop's life in the navy as a metaphor for the story of the minutemen and "...middle stand" was a parallel to dante's "comedia" dealing w/an illness that almost killed me in 2000, this third opera is quite different in that it has no standard narrative (libretto!) meaning no regular beginning-middle-end and is as it were "simultaneous" in the way a mirror from just inside my head - right in this middle-age moment of mine - was then shattered into thirty pieces and then each piece stuffed in the head to show a piece of my state of mind (or out-of-mind) as of now. "thirty tunes?" yes, they're little ones... actually they're "thirty parts" of one big tune.
oh, it was kind of trippy how this piece was actually made. I wrote all thirty parts on one of d. boon's telecaster - the black one he got in kent, ohio in 1984. now I'm not a very good guitarist but tom watson was quite the righteous man in his patience and determination to take the palsy demos I gave him and bring them to the piece." - Mike Watt
Besides the Mike Watt & The Missingmen dates, Watt will also hit the road for dates with Stooges, Hellride, Mike Watt & The Secondmen, and even play bass with Jandek in the coming months. All tour dates and some video is below.

Jandek @ Rudyard's (via Breakfast on Tour)

"The first ever live Jandek concert took place in October 2004. There have been 39 concerts total so far (1 in 2004, 10 in 2005, 9 in 2006, 10 in 2007, and 9 so far in 2008) and two more have been announced. So far the first eight shows are available from Corwood on CD, five of them on DVD as well, with more CD's and DVD's believed to be on the way.The above blurb is slightly outdated. The "two announced" shows took place earlier this year, and there was at least a third that took place just the other day in Houston, Texas...To the best of my knowledge, official audio recordings of all the shows are in Corwood's hands. Nearly all of the shows were also officially videotaped." [Jandek Live]
[We] had literally no idea what to expect at Sunday afternoon's Jandek show at Rudyard's, the first-ever public performance in Houston by one of the world's leading "outsider" musicians (who just happens to live here). From the little he knows of Jandek's prodigious catalogue, his best guess would have been a somewhat downcast solo performance on scratchy acoustic guitar. A one-song, 75-minute atomic funk explosion by way of the Knitting Factory was about the last thing Aftermath would have guessed, but that's exactly what he and the rest of the crowd packed into Rudyard's upstairs got...I've lost count, but whatever the total is now, add one more: Jandek will appear at NYU's E & L Auditorium in the Kimmel Center on April 23rd (washington square south, 4th floor doors at 8, show at 9). The FREE show will feature a "dance performance by Biba Belle", and "Tickets [will be] available to the public day of ONLY starting at 12:30pm from NYU ticket central (2nd floor of show's address)"...And there's more to come. Jandek will join New England drone duo MV + EE at DiverseWorks May 3. Aftermath has a hunch it won't sound anything like Sunday, but he'll be there just to make sure. [Houston Press]
Jandek's 5th & 6th-ever concerts took place in NYC in 2005.
Who wants the funk? Check out a video of Jandek jammin' at the Houston show, below...

Matisyahu @ Webster Hall | Jandek @ Issue Project Room

Matisyahu played Webster Hall in NYC last night (Sept 8, 2005) (full photo set coming soon).
Jandek played Issue Project Room in NYC Wednesday (Sept 7, 2005) (photos right here)
Jandek played an early and late show (different sets) at Issue Project Room last night (Sept 7, 2005) in Brooklyn, NY. They were two shows added last minute in addition to the one he played at Anthology Film Archive one day earlier. The three shows were part of a RARE six show tour from the mysterious guy who hardly ever plays, but has over 40 albums. I was at the early show.

I wanted to hate the show . The venue was absolutely stunning, the man is mythical, and he makes beautiful music, but I wanted to hate it because the doors weren't open at 7:00 as advertised (imagine a large crowd of music nerds standing on the side of the road near the gowanus canal in the middle of nowhere brooklyn). The show started late (some of us had places to be). You couldn't bring drinks in the performance area. The silo-shaped room (with a huge pole in the middle and more poles by the stage) was horrible (only those lucky enough to get a seat on the floor up front actually had a full view of Jandek and his band). We were threatened in a Scottish (Scottish, right?) accent with ejection from the barn if we were caught taking pictures or recording. We were told (in a nice way?) that the only reason Jandek was doing the extra 2 NYC shows, was because the New Orleans ones were cancelled. In other words we were to be thankful a city was wiped away because, "we sure as hell wouldn't of played extra shows for you just because the first NYC show sold out in one second" (not an actual quote). AND why couldn't they have played extra NYC shows AND the New Orleans shows? (note: I know I'm a spoiled New Yorker) My cynical mind decided it had something to do with a pretentious six-show concept that was related to the professional video cameras recording the whole event.

Well...I LOVED IT. By the time Jandek and band were halfway through their first song, not only did I forget all that was negative, I was completely entranced. I stayed that way for the rest of his 90 minute set. I didn't need a good seat because the show was best when I closed my eyes. The acoustics in the silo room were awesome (my unprofessional opinion). The lack of flashes and cameras in the quiet, cozy setting was a good thing too (yes, I obviously managed to sneak a few shots). And the lack of flashes will be even better on the DVD that I guess we can look forward to.

* There's a documentary about Jandek.
* Pitchfork reviewed the show in Texas a few days earlier.
* Heart on a Stick was also at this show.
* Amy was at the Anthology Film Archive show
* Adam was at the Film show too.
* Annabean was there too.

Jandek to play NY, Austin & New Orleans
"...On the eighth, there was no new info (not even the ticket price, which at least turned out to be a reasonable $25) posted on their website (whoever runs that thing is wholly incompetent and should be fired). Multiple phone calls to Anthology did no good – the guy at their box office (who only picked up about half the time) seemed like he’d had his memory erased between each call. I had to re-explain the situation every time, and every time he’d yell his questions off to someone in the background. Other Music referred me back to Anthology. Finally, around 2:30PM Other Music said, “They’re here!” Great. I was way uptown at that point. By the time I got to OM, all the tickets were gone. “When they finally marched them over, it was like this wave of people came with them.” Anthology said that – changing the story from before – 100 tix had been reserved for internet sales two days later, on Ticketweb, at noon..." Jandek to play NY, Austin & New Orleans
"Music's J.D. Salinger is apparently tired of seclusion. After three well-received concerts in Scotland and Britain the past two years, Jandek is ready to play his first stateside concerts. Tickets for the first date, scheduled for Austin, Texas on August 28th, are about to go on sale via the Jandek in Austin website. Details of the performance are hush hush, but the fact that each buyer is relegated to two tickets maximum seems to signal that promoters are expecting a swift sell-out. The Austin date will be followed by two early September performances in New Orleans and New York City." [Tiny Mix Tapes]
"Since recording Ready for the House in 1978, Jandek has performed a total of three concerts, the first in October 2004 and the remaining two in May of this year." [Pitchfork]
