Will Sheff at SXSW 2012 (more by Tim Griffin)
Will Sheff

Like last night (11/5), there are many more Hurricane Sandy Relief benefits going on in NYC.

Knitting Factory is hosting a show on Thursday (11/8) with a large (and kind of random) lineup tonight with WIll Sheff (of Okkervil River), Jean Grae, Geoff Rickly (of Thursday), Jennifer O'Conner, Holly Miranda, Jaymay, Bird of Youth, Kevin Devine, Brian Bonz, Jared Evan, Zumo Kollie, Sonya Kitchell, and DJ Rajni Jacques. Tickets for this show are available.

The previously mentioned Bad Brains tribute show happening at The Bowery Electric tonight with Bad Brains frontman H.R., Kyp Malone (of TV on the Radio), Steve Earle, members of Cro-Mags, Living Colour, Faith, Danzig, and more is now also a Hurricane Sandy Relief benefit. All proceeds will be sent to Amnesty International and the American Red Cross. Tickets are still available.

Santos Party House is hosting "A New York State of Mind," a show hosted/supported by A-Trak, Fool's Gold Smokers Club, and others with music by Josh Madden, Deemehlow, DJ Huggy Bear, and Old Money. They're accepting monetary donations or supplies like jackets, hats, gloves, blankets, flashlights, batteries, food, diapers, etc. The flier for this show is below.

GrandLife is hosting shows all week, from tonight through Saturday (11/10), at the Soho Grand (310 West Broadway) and Tribeca Grand (2 Avenue of the Americas) with sets by different DJs each night, each benefiting a different organization. Tonight it's Jared Swiley of Black Lips and Golden Triangle bassist Alix Brown at Soho Grand and Erik Tonnesen at Tribeca Grand, with the proceeds going to Feeding America. Tennessee Thomas DJs Soho Grand on Wednesday (11/7) and Tribeca Grand on Thursday (11/8) with Alix Brown, with the proceeds going to Occupy Sandy. Blue Logan DJs Tribeca Grand on Wednesday and Soho Grand on Thursday, with the proceeds going to Salvation Army. On Friday, Nicholas Kratochvil DJs Soho Grand with proceeds going the Mayor's Fund to Advance NYC, and Florencia Galarza DJs Tribeca Grand with proceeds going to NY Cares. And finally, on Saturday, Mike Nouveau will be at Soho Grand with proceeds going to NY Cares, and Shorty will be at Tribeca Grand, with proceeds going to the Mayor's Fund to Advance NYC. All proceeds from GrandLife's 'Safe & Sound' cocktail and $1 from every beer, wine, or cocktail purchased will be donated. The flyer for these shows is below.

The So So Glos will be hosting a benefit in NYC on November 15. More details TBA.

This one's not a show, but Buke & Gase, who once called Red Hook, Brooklyn home, have put out a new single on bandcamp, "Hard Times" b/w a cover of New Order's "Blue Monday." The single can be downloaded for $5 or more and all proceeds over the next week will benefit the recovery of Red Hook. You can stream those two tracks below.

WAVVES @ Market Hotel last night (9/25) (more by Leia Jospe)
WAVVES

"Wavves was playing with Zach Hill as his drummer [at Market Hotel] and the sound was different and pretty cool.

We were partying pretty hard, and as always seems to happen, the party moved to Daddy's after everything was settled up. Daddy's was packed and the remnants of the Beets (welcome home, boys!) show at Dead Herring (happy birthday Cathy!) and the Black Lips show [at Roseland Ballroom (they opened for Yo La Tengo)] also had migrated to the ever popular "hot spot". Star Studded scene to the maxxxx, if you like slightly "important" indie rockers.

Now, I didn't see exactly how the fight happened, but I had heard the gossip a few months back about Jared (from Black Lips) talking shit about Nathan on the Internet. Pitchfork went as far as to wonder if Nathan and Jared would have a confrontation when they both played this summer's p4k fest in Chicago. Needless to say, that didn't happen.

Well, I suppose last night was the perfect storm. I didn't see the beginning, but I did see people dragging Nathan and Jared apart, and then Jared and a popular DJ running at Nathan again, spilling beer all over everyone (including me), and punches being thrown. The lights at Daddy's were turned on, the cops showed up, but Jared and the chick were not ready to stop fighting and were even trying to fight other people outside the bar. Jared was bloody. Nathan was fine. Insane. Weirdest indie rock moment I've experienced." [PopJew]

My friend Dave G tells me there was a broken bottle which might explain Jared's blood and serious anger. Stay tuned for more details.

UPDATE: Nathan says Jared "got what was coming to him"

UPDATE 2: Jared says "Wavves was NOT involved in that fight"

The Gaye Blades
Gaye Blades

Retro rock band Georgiana Starlington (which features ex-Black Lips guitarist Jack Hines) kicks off a monthly residency at Bruar Falls in Brooklyn tonight (7/29). Opening up the show will be Atlanta's The Gaye Blades, a group fronted by current Black Lips member Jared Swilley (who is probably still in town since Black Lips played Sunday's Pool Party show). We think it's probably the group's (Gay Blades) NYC debut.

UPDATE: We realized right after posting that Benjamin Jay Womack (Bobby Ubangi) was also a member of the Gaye Blades (and Black Lips) at one time. Ben "passed away on July 1, 2009, following a nine month battle with cancer. B. Jay was 35 at the time of his death." Bradford Cox called him "A great friend and an amazing human being." RIP.

Wild About JenkemThe Gaye Blades appear on the Wild About Jenkem comp put out by Killer Diller Records in 2008. The songs on the record, contributed by bands that include Coconut Coolouts (who played NYC over the weekend), Back C.C.s and Livefastdie (who played their their last show in NYC over the weekend) (see below), are all about jenkem, which, according to Wikipedia, is "a hallucinogenic recreational drug composed of noxious gas formed from fermented human feces. In the early and mid-1990s, several reports stated that Jenkem was being used by Zambian street children." Sounds great! Charles Gaskins, who heads the Killer Diller label, will also be DJing at Bruar Falls tonight (7/29); Bosco Delray rounds out the bill.

VICE: Why's Livefastdie breaking up?

LFD: It's just time to call it a day. Four years is a lot longer than I thought it would go. Weird punk's taken over. Hippy shit. No room left.

If the "Gaye Blades" sounds familiar, that might be because...
