Kim Gordon on 'Girls'
Kim Girls

HBO series Girls was nominated for two Golden Globes but didn't win either on last night's awards ceremony. (The show lost to Brooklyn Nine Nine and Lena Dunham lost to Amy Poehler [who also co hosted the GGs].) At the same time elsewhere on the television dial, Girls made its Season 3 premiere with two back-to-back episodes. We knew this was coming but didn't know when -- the first episode featured Sonic Youth / Body/Head's Kim Gordon as Mindy, a member of Jessa's (Jemima Kirke) support group at rehab. The two don't get along. This is actually the third show with "Girl" in the title Gordon has acted in (the others being Gossip and Gilmore) but this is by far the meatiest part she's played. HBO has the whole premiere episode up on its YouTube channel to watch for free.

Meanwhile, a second soundtrack from the, titled Girls Volume 2: All Adventurous Women Do, will be released February 11 and features music by Vampire Weekend, Lily Allen, Beck, Cat Power, Jake Bugg, Aimee Mann and more. One of the tracks exlusive to the soundtrack is Jenny Lewis' "Completely Not Me" which features in the second episode's closing credits, is apparently a collaboration with Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij. You can listen to that over at Entertainment Weekly. Tracklist for the soundtrack is below.

In related news, while not the song from the Girls soundtrack, Lily Allen has released a new track, "Air Balloon," from her forthcoming new album and that can be streamed below.

Neil Young & friends during Lou Reed tribute
Neil

The annual Bridge School Benefit Concert went down over the weekend (10/26 & 10/27) with sets from Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Arcade Fire, Tom Waits, My Morning Jacket, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits and more. On the first day, Neil Young joined Arcade Fire (like he did at the 2011 benefit), this time for a new song that Win said was written in a dream and inspired by Neil, and hence titled, "I Dreamed A Neil Young Song." Neil also joined MMJ for "Harvest Moon." You can check out an 8-hour full-set video of day 1 below (MMJ comes on around 4:50, Arcade Fire around 5:40, QOTSA around 6:40, and CSNY around 7:40).

On the second day, Neil Young, Elvis Costello, MMJ, Jenny Lewis and others performed The Velvet Underground's "Oh! Sweet Nuthin" as a tribute to Lou Reed (who passed away earlier in the day). Tom Waits also performed his first concert in five years, and was joined by Primus' Les Claypool on upright bass. His set, along with the Lou Reed tribute, can be watched below.

The 2013 Bridge School Benefit concerts happen this weekend (October 26 & 27) at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA. Now in it's 27th year, the benefit concerts raise money for The Bridge School, a "non-profit, innovative organization educating children with severe speech and physical impairments through the use of augmentative and alternative communication systems and assistive technology" that was founded, in part, by Pegi Young (wife of Neil Young).

This year's concerts, as mentioned, feature performances by CSNY, Queens of the Stone Age, My Morning Jacket, Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, fun, Heart, Jenny Lewis and, on Saturday (10/26) only, Arcade Fire, Jack Johnson and Tom Waits. All performances are acoustic.

For those who can't attend but would like to watch, the Saturday Bridge School Benefit concert will stream live via YouTube. The eight-hour webcast begins at 8 PM Eastern (5 PM Pacific).

Meanwhile, check out Arcade Fire's Colbert Report appearance and pictures from the recent Brooklyn shows.

Arcade Fire

That's the new LA record release show poster above. Here's more info:

"As part of their ongoing "The Music Experiment 2.0" social media-driven concert series, MTV Iggy and Intel Corporation today announced that Grammy Award-winning rock band Arcade Fire will perform a special show at an as-yet-unannounced outdoor location in Los Angeles on October 29th, upon release of their hotly anticipated fourth studio album, Reflektor.

Beginning today, October 15th, fans can visit www.MusicExperiment.com for a chance to win tickets to the exclusive live performance by participating in "The Music Experiment 2.0" across Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Vine, Shazam & Twitter. The performance will also stream live on www.MusicExperiment.com and through The Music Experiment Windows App.
Arcade Fire was also added to Neil Young's annual Bridge School Benefit along with Tom Waits, Queens of the Stone Age, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, fun., My Morning Jacket, Elvis Costello, Jenny Lewis, Heart, and Diana Krall. The two day event takes place October 26th and 27th at Shoreline Amphitheatre.

Meanwhile, Arcade Fire will be in NYC for two NYC shows this week. The location is still officially undisclosed, as is the way to get tickets, but My Social List and Arcade Fire Tube seem to have figured out that the location is a warehouse-turned-cultural center located at 299 Meserole in Brooklyn (the same location as a 10/26 Halloween party with Alex Metric and Just Blaze). Stay tuned for more details!

The band are also playing Big Night in Little Haiti at Little Haiti Cultural Center in Miami on October 24. Special presale (only with artist presale code) starts Wednesday 10/16 at 10AM. On sale to the public Thursday 10/17 at 10AM.

They return to NYC in November for the YouTube Awards.

rilo kiley

It's been six year's since Rilo Kiley's last album, Under the Blacklight, and the band, who singer Jenny Lewis says "never broke up," are finally coming out of hibernation... for a b-sides and rarities compilation. That record, titled RKives, includes nine never-before-released songs, demos, b-sides, and other loose tracks. The 16 track release, out April 2, will be available on CD and double vinyl with a booklet designed by the band. You can preorder RKives at Rilo Kiley's website.

The band are making a video for the album's first single "Let Me Back In," and they're looking for help:

Help us make our video! For our first single, "Let Me Back In", we invite you to upload your favorite personal Rilo Kiley video clip, band footage, created animation, etc... whatever you have in moving pictures that you'd like to share with us. We will then view and choose among them to incorporate into the video. All submissions are due by March 5th at RiloKiley.com.
You can stream "Let Me In" over at SPIN. In other news, in addition to going on tour as part of The Postal Service this summer, Jenny Lewis also wrote and recorded five new songs for the film Very Good Girls which recently premiered at Sundance and stars Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen. Lewis also was music supervisor on the film.

As for new Rilo Kiley music, Lewis told Buzzfeed:

I just tend to think in my life you can never shut the door on anything: an ex-lover, a bandmate, a song -- there are so many songs that I didn't want to play for so many years but then they kind of come back around and they become relevant again.
Track list for RKives is below.

Conor Oberst / Jenny Lewis @ Fox Theater 10/3/2012
Conor Oberst
Jenny Lewis

Last week, the prolific 32-year-old who primarily does business as Bright Eyes appeared at UCLA's Royce Hall, one of two seated, acoustic performances (the other was at Carnegie Hall) that cherry-picked his songbook and served up reworked gems occasionally abetted by friends like Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins.

I heard that was riveting, and foolishly arrived without earplugs thinking the same thing (albeit with different selections) was due to happen Wednesday night at the Fox Theater, where Oberst drew a wildly devoted, near-capacity crowd. Yet this again was something different: a full-blown, full-band show, with long-haired Oberst in wide-brimmed-hat mode, folky like the new-millennium Dylan he's always been but rocking out with the feel (and sometimes the intensity) of late-'60s Neil Young. [Orange County Register]

Conor Oberst and Jenny Lewis & the Watson Twins played the Fox Theater in Pomona, CA on Wednesday (10/3) and there are pictures from that show in this post. Both Conor and Jenny are performing again today (10/5) at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park which is happening as we speak and free and open to the public if you're out that way. Also playing the fest, on the Conor Oberst-curated stage today is Ben Kweller, with whom Conor recently played in Austin.

The Arrow stage (not the one Conor and Jenny are playing) at is being streamed live on the HSBF website. Dashboard Confessional's Chris Carrabba is on as of the posting. Schedule is here.

More pics from the Fox Theatre show are below...

Jenny & Johnny

Unfortunately, I missed most of the [CMJ] day panels due to work and school - but I was able to get my badge and head over to my favourite venue, Irving Plaza, to see Jenny and Johnny...

At Irving Plaza, a more mature-sounding Jenny Lewis with fresh material awaited my presence. Jenny and Johnny do drift a bit away from Rilo Kiley by adding a mix of country and a male voice to Lewis's new sound. The country guitar twang on "Scissor Runner" was defintely more pronounced when performed live and was appreciated by everyone in attendance. Jenny also dedicated "New York Cartoon" to the people of New York City, which was something I appreciated...
Jonathan Rice has been a great addition to Jenny Lewis's repertoire. Hope there's more Jenny and Johnny in the future. -[B-Sides]

Jenny & Johnny headlined the Ground Control Touring showcase at Irving Plaza last night (10/19), their only CMJ show . The openers on the other hand are each playing other times in NYC this week. They were Wild Nothing, Times New Viking, Happy Birthday, and La Sera.

Jenny and Johnny are now on tour. More pictures, some videos and the setlist from the show (just the headliner for now), below...

Jenny Lewis of Jenny & Johnny @ Williamsburg Waterfront
Jenny & Johnny

Flipping through the channels the other night, I came upon Inside The Actor's Studio with guest Betty White. They cut to a Golden Girls clip and guess who was holding Rose's teddy bear hostage with a squirtgun filled with red ink? The one and only Jenny Lewis.

Jenny graduated from stick-up kid to professional musician long ago. Rilo Kiley released their first album in 1999, she went solo in 2006, and most recently she teamed up with her boyfriend "Johnny" Rice to write and record I'm Having Fun Now. That album has been out since August 31st, and Jenny and Johnny will hit the road for more shows in October and November. Those now include a CMJ show at Irving Plaza on 10/19. Tickets for the NYC show go on sale NOW (at 10am).

Jenny & Johnny have already passed through these parts, and recently. The band played Maxwell's on 9/21 and two days before, supported Pavement alongside Endless Boogie at Williamsburg Waterfront (where Belle & Sebastian play the last show of the season tonight). We now have pictures from that Brooklyn show.

More of those pictures, all tour dates, and the video of Jenny on the Golden Girls, below....

Continue reading "updated Jenny & Johnny tour dates (now with a NYC CMJ show) ++ pics from their Brooklyn show "

Jenny And Johnny

Jenny and Johnny (Jenny Lewis and Johnny Rice) will be releasing their debut LP, We're Having Fun Now, sometime this fall. The song "Scissor Runner" from it is is available online as a free download.

The pair will hit the road this September for shows across the US. On September 19th, as previously mentioned, they'll be opening for Pavement at the Williamsburg Waterfront. They have since also added their own show at Maxwell's on September 21st. Tickets are on sale.

One place they won't be playing is Arizona, which they'll be avoiding becuase of the new immigration law. There's a growing list of artists (which Jenny and Johnny aren't on) who are boycotting the state as part of The Sound Strike, a campaign headed by Rage Against the Machine's Zack de la Rocha. Jenny and Johnny's note about that, and all their tour dates are below...

Continue reading "Jenny (Lewis) & Johnny (Rice) releasing an album, touring - dates include Maxwell's, but not Arizona "

Bumbershoot

Memorial Day Weekend officially opened the summer, and for those in the Pacific Northwest it also brought Sasquatch Music Festival (pictures from all three days are coming soon). Now the lineup for its Labor Day cousin, Bumbershoot 2010, has been announced. That fest, happening at Seattle, WA's Seattle Center September 4th-6th, will include headliners Bob Dylan, Mary J. Blige, Weezer, Hole, Rise Against, Neko Case, The Decemberists, J. Cole and "one more very special guest to be announced soon."

Tickets (including non-Mainstage 'economy' passes) are on sale now. The rest of the lineup (by day) for the seven-stage festival is posted below...
