Kool Keith (aka Dr. Octagon aka Dr. Dooom aka a member of Ultramagnetic MC's, etc etc etc) recently returned with a new album on Mello Music Group, Time? Astonishing!. It's a collaboration with North Carolina producer L'Orange, for whom it was his second collaborative LP of 2015. (The other was The Night Took Us In Like Family with Jeremiah Jae.) Time? Astonishing! features Open Mike Eagle, Blu, Mr. Lif, J-Live and more, and as you might expect from Kool Keith, it's spacey psychedelic rap. Stream the whole thing (and the whole Jeremiah Jae/L'Orange album) below.
As previously mentioned, Kool Keith is playing shows this year, including NYC's Brooklyn Bowl on August 20. Since we last spoke, that became a co-headlining show with Blacklicious. Tickets are still available.
That show is part of a much longer tour for Blackalicious (aka Gift of Gab and Chief Xcel), which is in support of their upcoming album, Imani, Vol. 1, that they're self-releasing on September 18. It's their fourth album total and first since 2005's The Craft, and from the sounds of new single "Blacka," these guys are still fired up. Check it out, with the list of tour dates, below.
Chicago alt-rapper Open Mike Eagle, who previously put out releases on the Hellfyre Club label, is releasing his next album, Dark Comedy, this week (6/10) via Mello Music Group. The record features guest appearances from comedian Hannibal Buress, former Das Racist member Kool AD, production from the formerly Brainfeeder/currently Warp-signed Jeremiah Jae and more. Stream two tracks and watch a video for a third, below.
Open Mike Eagle will celebrate the new album with a release party in NYC on June 18 at Spike Hill with MC Paul Barman, Louis Katz, Premrock, Janelle James and Steel Tipped Dove. Plus, he's promising guest appearances from Donwill (of Tanya Morgan), MC Frontalot, Billy Woods and special guests. Tickets are on sale now.

Following a few releases on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label, Chicago rapper Jeremiah Jae signed to Warp Records for the Bad Jokes mixtape, and now he's set to release another mixtape via Warp, Good Times. So far, Jeremiah's shared two singles from the mixtape, "Survival" and the just-released "Mountain Rise," both of which revel in the kind of jazz rap that shows Jeremiah isn't straying too far from his Brainfeeder roots. You can listen to both below.
Jeremih also has a European tour coming up, but first he'll play NYC Wednesday (4/2) at The Studio at Webster Hall with Lord Raja and Peabody, and a hometown show in Chicago a few days later (4/8). Tickets for the NYC show are on sale now.
All dates are listed, with the song streams, below...
Sylvan Esso, the new project of Mountain Man's Amelia Meath and Megafaun's Nick Sanborn, will release their self-titled debut album in May. This coming week they'll preview some of it in Austin at SXSW where one of their shows is the Thursday BrooklynVegan free day party. Meanwhile, we cornered Nick and asked him 5 QUESTIONS:
1) What is your favorite venue to play in the country and why?
SE: The cactus club in Milwaukee!
We love any venue with a gong.

Captain Murphy aka Flying Lotus
If you aren't already familiar with new rapper Captain Murphy, who first appeared on the Adult Swim single, "Between Friends" with Flying Lotus and Earl Sweatshirt, he had been keeping his identity concealed but many rumors circulated that Captain Murphy was the rapper alter ego of FlyLo himself, or a member of Odd Future. He released his impressive debut mixtape, Duality, as one long audio file in a video (which you can watch below) but has since released a deluxe edition with the tracks separated and bonus material, which you can download for free HERE. Most of the mixtape was produced by Flying Lotus and also included production from Brainfeeder producers Jeremiah Jae, Samiyam, and Teebs, plus hip hop production greats Madlib and Just Blaze, and a beat by upcoming duo TNGHT. The full tracklist is below.
If you've been following along with all the Captain Murphy insanity, you may know that he made his live debut last night (11/28) in LA at The Airliner. And as you can see in the picture above from the show, Captain Murphy is in fact Flying Lotus (via Complex). FlyLo has since taken to twitter to comment on the identity revealing.

Flying Lotus @ Terminal 5, 10/7/2012
Flying Lotus wrapped up his NYC takeover on Wednesday with the Brainfeeder showcase at Villain. That showcase was headlined by The Gaslamp Killer, who was supporting his new album, Breatkthrough, and it also featured Martyn, Dorian Concept, Jeremiah Jae, Taylor McFerrin, and The Underachievers. FlyLo didn't play a set but he was in attendance and you can see him on stage with Gaslamp Killer, along with other pictures from the showcase, below.
The NYC takeover also featured a "Meet the Musician" event at Apple Store SoHo, a Boiler Room set, an appearance at Warp's booth at the Brooklyn Flea Record Fair, and a sold out headlining show at Terminal 5 on 10/7 with members of his Brainfeeder crew in tow (including opener Thundercat). Pics from the T5 show are in this post as well.
Flying Lotus will return to NYC during CMJ for a one-off at Le Poisson Rouge on October 17 with Death Grips, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Buke & Gase. That show is RSVPed out and we're not sure if they're taking any badges, but the show isn't listed on the CMJ schedule, so no promises.
With SBTRKT's show last night and FlyLo's show from Sunday, there's been no shortage of great electronic shows at Terminal 5 lately. Plus, shows coming up there include Major Lazer, Pictureplane, and Brenmar on 10/27 and Squarepusher, Bonobo, Holy Fuck, and Mount Kimbie on 11/1. More pics from FlyLo's T5 show and the Brainfeeder showcase at Villain are below.

Flying Lotus played Terminal 5 last night (10/7) as part of his NYC Takeover and you can watch video of his T5 performance at the bottom of this post. The takeover also included a stop at the Warp Records booth at the Brooklyn Flea Record Fair on Saturday (10/6) and continues on with a Boiler Room NYC performance tonight (10/8, guest list only but can be streamed live) with Questlove, Flatbush Zombies, Just Blaze, Joey Bada$$ & Pro Era, and The Underachievers; and a visit to the Apple SoHo store on Tuesday (10/9) and more.
Additionally, on Wednesday (10/10) there is the Brainfeeder Session NYC show at Villain in Williamsburg that features The Gaslamp Killer, Martyn, Dorian Concept, Jeremiah Jae, Taylor McFerrin, The Underachievers and "very special guests." Could FlyLo be that special guest? That show is free but you do need to RSVP (which is now open).
Additionally, he'll be here next week for CMJ for a show at Le Poisson Rouge on October 17 with Death Grips.

Emily Wells at Bowery Ballroom, April 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Emily Wells released Mama Remixed, which takes her entire album, Mama, from earlier this year and gives it a new spin. Says Emily:
I couldn't be more excited to announce the release of "Mama Remixed". In collaboration with 13 artists, each song from the record has been remixed and a few of them twice! With contributions from Lemonade, Jeremiah Jae, Ed Rodriguez of Deerhoof, Kid Koala, Dan the Automator, Live Footage, Timmy Straw, The Blow... (just to name a few), I'm honored to be in such good company. You can download Mama Remixed for free above or stream it below. Emily is also out on the road touring with Dark Dark Dark. That tour hits NYC soon: October 12 at Knitting Factory (tix) and October 13 at Le Poisson Rouge (tix). All tour dates are listed below.
I hope you'll enjoy these and spread them around. We wanted to make something special to explore these songs further and to thank you for being so good to me and supporting my work.

Flying Lotus at Coachella 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Flying Lotus is about to welcome his new album, Until the Quiet Comes next week (10/2) via Warp. As the album title implies, it's a "quieter" record than the maximalist Cosmogramma, but it's just as fleshed out and compelling. You can stream the album ahead of its release date at NPR. The video for "Putty Boy Strut" can be watched below.
As mentioned, FlyLo will be supporting the album with a tour that hits NYC on October 7 at Terminal 5 with Thundercat and other Brainfeeder artists. Tickets for that show are still available. That's the first date club date on his tour, but he's since revealed that the tour will kick off with a "take over" of LA and NYC surrounding that date.
In NYC, he'll appear at the Warp booth at the Brooklyn Flea Record Fair on October 6, where he'll be signing copies of his new album. That's free and the booth will be open from 11 AM to 6 PM. The day after the T5 show, he'll play a Red Bull Music Academy Takeover for Boiler Room NYC (10/8) with a great lineup of Questlove, Flatbush Zombies, Just Blaze, Joey Bada$$ & Pro Era, and The Underachievers. That show is guest list only but you can watch it live at boilerroom.tv. On October 9 he'll partake in the "Meet the Musician" series at Apple Store SoHo where he'll give a talk and also perform. That show runs from 6-8 PM and is free but space is very limited.
Lastly, he'll do two events on October 10, including the East Village Radio Takeover, where Flying Lotus and Brainfeeder artists Gaslamp Killer, Martyn, Dorian Concept, Jeremiah Jae, Taylor McFerrin, and The Underachievers will take over two hours of air time on East Village Radio from 2-4 PM to preview their showcase which happens later that night at new Brooklyn venue Villain (50 North 3 St). That show is also presented by the Red Bull Music Academy and features the same lineup (UPDATE: FlyLo is not confirmed) as the radio takeover plus "very special guests." No ticket info for this show at the moment.
An updated list of Flying Lotus dates and the video for "Putty Boy Strut" are below.
