Conor Oberst in Chicago in May (more by James Richards IV)
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...
Conor Oberst, Dawes @ Central Park Summerstage
The brains behind the beloved Bright Eyes and multiple other projects throughout his lengthy and prolific career, Conor Oberst is now back in solo mode with a new folk-oriented record, Upside Down Mountain.
Chain and the Gang, Ed Schrader's Music Beat @ Baby's All Right
Ian Svenonius' current outfit Chain & the Gang recently released new LP, Minimal Rock n' Roll and, while it purposefully lacks production flourishes, it's got no shortage of style and attitude. (Those have been Svenonius' calling cards since the start.) They play tonight with Baltimore party starters Ed Schrader's Music Beat.
Power Trip, Mammoth Grinder, Ajax @ The Studio at Webster Hall
Power Trip more than do justice to thrash metal's early, raw days, keeping the genre's hardcore roots intact. Great live band too. This is their second of two NYC shows this week.
DJ Dog Dick, King Concubine, Eric Copeland, Fluct, Robot Death Beech Creeps @ Shea Stadium
This is night three of the high-concept, six-Brooklyn-venues-in-six-nights "Bushwick Small World Tour" headlined by the Black Dice frontman.
Jody Porter, John Gallagher Jr., Ionia, Coastgaard @ Bowery Electric
Jody Porter is a guitar-pop vet, having logged time in The Belltower (with Britta Phillips) and Fountains of Wayne. On his own, things lean a little more psych. Also performing is John Gallagher Jr who you may know from HBO's The Newsroom (if you watched that).
Kodomo, ohnomoon, Kodacrome, Varick @ Glasslands
IDM producer Kodomo (aka Emmy award winning TV, movie & video game soundtrack composer Chris Child) teams with synth pop artist Kodacrome (who he recently remixed) for a joint record release party tonight.
Naomi Shelton & Gospel Queens @ Rough Trade
Like others on the Daptone label, Naomi Shelton is a veteran performer with newfound success in the retro soul/funk world thanks to recent exposure. She has a new album out today and celebrates with this free in-store. Daptone DJs at doors.
The Kooks, CLARA-NOVA @ Terminal 5
British pop rockers The Kooks will return with their fourth album, Listen, this September. Ahead of that they play two sold out NYC shows, this being the second.
Tom Keifer @ B.B. King Blues Club
Tom Keifer, frontman for '80s-era glam metal band Cinderall, released his debut solo album last year and tonight he'll play songs off that plus classics from his main band.
Seth Herzog's SWEET @ The Slipper Room
Seth Herzog's long-running comedy show tonight features the Sasheer Zamata (SNL), Myq Kaplan, Max Silvestri and more.
For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our NYC concert calendar.

Petty Fest is returning to NYC this October, though unlike previous years, this year there will be "Two Nights To Get Drunk And Celebrate The Songs Of Tom Petty." The fest is taking place October 5 at Music Hall of Williamsburg and October 6 at Bowery Ballroom. The fest is (almost) the same lineup of musicians that usually get together for things like this, like Norah Jones, Nicole Atkins, Jesse Malin, Sammy James Jr. (The Mooney Suzuki), Jody Porter (Fountains of Wayne), Tad Kubler of The Hold Steady, Josh Lattanzi of The Lemonheads, and others. Interesting additions inclue Har Mar Superstar and Jonny Corndawg. I hope they do a duet. And of course there will be "surprise guests". Tickets for both nights go on sale Thursday (9/1) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (8/31) at noon. $2 from each ticket will be donated to Doctors Without Borders.
Jonny Corndawg meanwhile will also be in NYC TONIGHT (8/30) for his record release show at Union Pool.
