Craig Finn at the Space at Westbury - 5/19/15 (photo via Beth Shorr)
Craig Finn

While Tad Kulber is off touring in Courtney Love's band, his Hold Steady bandmate Craig Finn is currently on the road opening for Jason Isbell, and Craig's also sharing the stage with some interesting people. His current band is Joey Russo (of Furthur, Benevento Russo Duo, Cass McCombs, and much more), Cass McCombs' longtime bassist Jon Shaw, and Josh Kaufman (Josh Ritter, Dawn Landes, Trixie Whitley, Yellowbirds, etc). Craig's tour began last week in Florida, but his first two shows with that band happened in the NYC-area this week. First they hit Long Island's Space at Westbury on Tuesday (5/19) and then Westchester's Capitol Theatre last night (5/20). Tonight (5/21) they're in Asbury Park at the Stone Pony (without Jason Isbell) which is a members only event for Brookdale Public Radio 90.5 The Night. More details at wbjb.org. Updated Craig Finn dates are listed below.

Craig will also return to NYC soon to appear at the IFC Center on June 4, where The 78 Project Movie will be screening. The movie "is a road trip across America to make one-of-a-kind 78rpm records with musicians in their hometowns using a 1930s Presto direct-to-disc recorder. With one microphone. One blank disc. In one 3-minute take." After the screening, Craig will cut a record to 78 himself, in front of a live audience (like Sondre Lerche did with the 78 Project at Rough Trade on Record Store Day). There will also be a post-film discussion with producer Lavinia Jones Wright & director Alex Steyermark. Tickets are on sale.

List of Craig's dates, below...

The National have been talking about an all-star indie rock tribute to The Grateful Dead for long time now, and 2015 would be a good year to finally release it given all the excitment surrounding The Dead's 50th anniversary. It's seeming like a possibility that that will in fact be the case, as the band are/were up in Woodstock at Dreamland Recordings working on it.

We already knew they were planning to include members of Vampire Weekend, Bon Iver, Kurt Vile, The Walkmen and Megafaun, and from the pictures they've been posting on Instagram, it's looking like way more really exciting people are involved too. It had already been talked about to maybe include Sonic Youth guitarist and major Dead fan Lee Ranaldo, but it's now confirmed that he recorded at Dreamland with them too. Will Oldham (aka Bonnie 'Prince' Billy) is there (!). Kristian Matsson (aka The Tallest Man on Earth) is there. Walter Martin from the Walkmen is pictured. Cass McCombs and Phil Lesh collaborator Joe Russo, who both just played a Dead tribute in Brooklyn were there, and Sam Amidon too. Josh Ritter's band, etc member Josh Kaufman is there along with his former Yellowbirds bandmate Sam Cohen, and Takka Takka/Gabriel and the Hounds/sometimes National, etc member Conrad Doucette is in the pictures too.

Looks like this is turning out even more exciting than it first seemed. Check out more pictures from the recording sessions below...

Cass McCombs @ Bonnaroo 2014 (via American Songwriter)
Cass McCombs

(Like Yoko Ono,) Cass McCombs loves to play small, secret, private shows around town. You can't blame him. He needs to still be able to headline 600+ capacity venues like Music Hall of Williamsburg, but sometimes wants to practice in front of a smaller audience. That's what Cass did at the now defunct Bar 4 at least twice in the past, and what he did with bandmate Joe Russo a week ago at Hometown BBQ in Red Hook to get ready for Bonnaroo. Check out two Instagram videos from the secret Brooklyn show where I'm told he played to "about 20 people", below. You can watch a video from Cass's 5/22 Music Hall show, down there too.

American Songwriter was at the actual Bonnaroo performance and writes:

Cass McCombs has a secret weapon on tour with him, Joe Russo. If you know that name I could probably just quit writing right now and you'd get the picture. But for those not familiar with the former Benevento-Russo Duo drummer (who plays with everyone from Furthur to Morning Teleportation in his spare time), he is one of the most accomplished and entertaining drummers in music today. Russo has his hands in so many cookie jars, it's hard to say how many times he's played the farm, but he's certainly no stranger. He filled the tall shoes of John Bonham at last year's Bonnaroo with his Zeppelin cover band, Bustle In Your Hedgerow.

Which isn't to take anything away from McCombs. If any complaint can be made about Russo it's that he's... distracting. But it's hard to distract from the great material that made up Cass McCombs' set.

Embracing his jammier side, McCombs lead his band through several breezy, grooving tracks. But the band knew when to pick up the energy, and fan favorites like "County Line" were the highlight of this set.

Cass's full band is Joe Russo on drums, Dan Iead on guitar/pedal steel, Jon Shaw on bass, and Will Canzoneri on keys.

Cass will not have a band with him at all when he becomes the DJ for the Starred show at Baby's All Right tonight (6/20).

California can catch Cass live when he opens for the War on Drugs at the Glass House (10/1) and Fonda Theatre (10/3).

As Dead Heads likely know, original Grateful Dead member Phil Lesh has an ongoing residency at Port Chester, NY's Capitol Theatre with his band Phil Lesh & Friends. The residency has already had him at the venue multiple times, and will continue to do so, including a run this week with shows tonight (4/10) through Saturday (4/12). The band for these particular shows is Phil Lesh, John Kadlecik, Jackie Greene, Marco Benevento and Joe Russo. Friday and Saturday are sold out, but you can still get tickets for tonight and Thursday.

After this week's run, Phil & Friends (this time Phil Lesh, Warren Haynes, Jackie Greene, John Medeski, and Joe Russo), who play mostly Grateful Dead songs, will head to NYC for two nights at BAM, April 14 and 15. Tickets for those shows are on sale now, and we're also giving away a pair for each night. Details on how to enter to win, below.

The Cap is owned by Peter Shapiro, who is presenting the BAM shows and also owns the Brooklyn Bowl, which has since opened locations in Las Vegas and London. Phil Lesh will play three nights at the Vegas one leading up to 4/20 (tickets), and he also plays two nights at the London one in July (tix on sale Friday, 4/11 at 10 AM).

There's other upcoming Dead-related shows at the Capitol Theatre too. Renowned tribute band Dark Star Orchestra does a two-night stand on May 16 & 17. Tickets for night 1 and night 2 are on sale.

And on a semi-related note, Hot Tuna, the blues band of Jefferson Airplane members Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady who come from the same San Francisco scene that birthed the Grateful Dead and their members have collaborated, play the Cap on June 16. That's one of four NYC-area shows on their electric tour with Leon Russell which also hits NYCB Theatre at Westbury on 6/20, Bergen PAC on 6/21 and Pine Belt Arena on 6/22. Tickets for the Cap show and the other three are on sale now.

In more Dead news, Phil Lesh's former Grateful Dead/Further partner Bob Weir is playing with his band RatDog at upstate NY jam band festival Mountain Jam, which takes place from June 5 - 8 on Hunter Mountain. Other artists playing include Gov't Mule, Dark Star Orchestra, Jeff Tweedy, Jonathan Wilson, Valerie June, Blitzen Trapper and many more. Since we last spoke, The Allman Brothers (who recently had to postpone the rest of their March Beacon Theatre run due to Gregg's illness) were added as the Sunday headliner and will be performing their first two albums in full. Tickets for the fest are still available.

Also not long after those Phil Lesh NYC shows, John Kadlecik, who has played in Further, Phil Lesh & Friends (including this week at the Cap) and Dark Star Orchestra, brings his John K. Band to NYC's Highline Ballroom on April 18 with opener Adam Ezra. John will be previewing new material at the show. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

In more related news, the Dead's pals New Riders of the Purple Sage (whose earliest incarnation featured Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and Dead drummer Mickey Hart) will headline the "Psychedelix Americana": Music of The Deli and Relix show at Brooklyn's Bell House on Saturday (4/12). The rest of that lineup includes Andy Statman, Scott Metzger's WOLF!, Diamond Eye Jack Super Jam, Your Ex-Girlfriends, Union Street Preservation Society, and King Stork. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

There's also a Dead tribute band called Half Step playing Brooklyn Bowl on July 1. Tickets for that are on sale now.

And lastly, this isn't exactly "news" but in lieu of Letterman's retirement, Jambase.com posted a video of an old Jerry Garcia & Bob Weir rehearsal on Letterman. You can watch that, plus revisit other Dead/Letterman memories including Jerry & David Grisman playing "Friend of the Devil" in '93 and Jerry and Weir on the show in '82, below.

Any other Dead-related events coming up in NYC that we missed?

Videos and Phil Lesh contest details below...

Dean Ween

As you probably know, New Jersey was hit really hard during Hurricane Sandy and in an effort to help one of the victims, Dean Ween (aka Mickey Melchiondo of Ween) is hosting a benefit concert in Asbury Park (home of the Stone Pony which did survive the storm). Dean writes...

Like a lot of people I know it's hard to figure out where to best donate money and resources right now. To this end I've just arranged a benefit concert for my good friend Nick Honachefsky who lost his home and all of his worldly possessions in the storm. I'm hosting a benefit concert at the Saint in Asbury Park, NJ on Sun Nov. 11 Wed, Nov. 28--"Dean Ween and Friends" featuring Claude Coleman, Glenn McClelland, Chris Harford, Dickie Moist, and the all of the usual suspects to help Nick get back on his feet. The evening will feature new music and old music by Moistboyz, Chris Harford, Jimmy Wilson, members of Ween, etc. More specific details to follow. Also, there is a fund set up for Nick at this address.
Dean is also working on his first solo album, which will feature Josh Homme, Nick Oliveri, Guy Heller, Claude Coleman, Chuck Treece, Dave Dreiwitz, Glenn McClelland, Joe Kramer, Andrew Weiss, Joe Russo, Scott Metzger, and more guests that he's worked with over the years. In addition to featuring on the album, Josh Homme is also producing it. The above picture is of Dean Ween at the recording sessions for his new album with Joe Kramer and Chuck Treece (via Facebook).

UPDATE: The date of this benefit has changed.

A video of Dean Ween and some of his friends jamming is below...
