Thurston Moore on the 'Station to Station' tour (more by Lukas Hodge)
As discussed, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore is playing two New Year's Eve shows at The Stone, an early one with John Zorn, and a late one with Mike Watt. Since we last spoke, we realized those shows are actually part of Thurston's residency at the venue, which kicks off on NYE and continues through January 5. He's curating for the week, and also performing with different collaborators each night.
Most notably, the residency has him performing with Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley for two shows on 1/3, with Chelsea Light Moving drummer John Moloney for two shows on 1/4, and with another CLM member, Samara Lubelski, on 1/2. Probably don't expect Sonic Youth or Chelsea Light Moving songs though. He'll also be performing with NYC experimental duo White Out (who have releases on Thurston's Ecstatic Peace label) on the final night (1/5). The full schedule and an updated list of Chelsea Light Moving tour dates are below.
Meanwhile, as we speak, avant guitarist/banjoist Eugene Chadbourne's residency at the venue is underway. It kicked off this past Tuesday (10/29) and included his Halloween show at the venue last night (10/31). It continues with Eugene playing as a duo with Tatsuya Nakatani tonight (11/1), solo on Saturday (11/2), and as part of a 5-piece on Sunday (11/3).
Most of the other Nov/Dec curators are all notable jazz musicians and improvisers. One that's especially exciting to us is Ikue Mori, drummer of seminal no wave band DNA, 1/3 of Death Ambient (with Fred Frith and Kato Hideki), and a frequent collaborator of John Zorn, Mike Patton, various members of Sonic Youth, and more. She curates/performs at The Stone from December 17-22 and collaborators for the week include Zeena Parkins, Fred Frith, Sylvie Courvoisier, John Zorn and more, plus a "SPECIAL SURPRISE BAND" TBA on 12/20. Full schedule for her residency below.
In related news, Ikue Mori plays a previously discussed special Body/Head trio set with B/H members Kim Gordon and Bill Nace at the Kim Gordon benefit at Issue Project Room.
Then, from December 25-29 at The Stone, it's the annual John Zorn end of the year improv week, leading up to Thurston Moore's NYE shows. Zorn will be joined by multiple other improvisers throughout the week, including Thurston Moore, Ikue Mori, Sylvie Courvoisier, Erik Friedlander, Okkyung Lee, and many more. Full schedule below.

The Spy Music Festival is back for a third year of experimental sounds, going down over two nights next month: September 7 at Spectrum, and September 8 at 285 Kent.
The 9/7 show at Spectrum (121 Ludlow St.) features the Charles Gayle Trio, Loren Connors & Suzanne Langille, Diamond Terrifier and more. $10 at the door and you can RSVP too.
The 9/8 show at 285 Kent is a little more high-profile, with Caught on Tape (aka Thurston Moore & John Moloney), Aa, Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band, Ava Luna and more. Advance tickets are on sale for this night and your ticket also gets you free Six Point beer.
Visit Spy Music Fest's website for details on all of this year's acts, and full schedule is below.
Arto Lindsay of legendary no wave group DNA, The Lounge Lizards, and pursuer of an impressive solo career, will be performing material from throughout his career in NYC TONIGHT (11/30) at the New Museum. Tickets for the show ($12 for members, $15 for non-members) are available.
Speaking of no wave legends, Lydia Lunch (Teenage Jesus and the Jerks), who played Knitting Factory earlier this month will be playing with her band Big Sexy Noise in NYC on December 17 at Bowery Electric with "Caught on Tape" duo Thurston Moore/John Moloney. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
For Thurston Moore and John Moloney, the Bowery Electric show is part of a short December northeast tour that the duo will be on, which also includes the previously discussed Brooklyn show at Union Pool on December 11 with Speedy Ortiz and Lone Wolf. All of their dates are listed below.
In other related news, Thurston's ex-wife/Sonic Youth bandmate Kim Gordon, who will guest at the upcoming, sold-out Dinosaur Jr. You're Living All Over Me show at T5, will also be a guest with John Cale (of the Velvet Underground) when he does a tribute to Nico at BAM on January 16 at the Peter Jay Sharp Building. Other guests at that show include Mark Lanegan, Sharon Van Etten, Magnetic Fields, Joan as Police Woman, Peaches, Nick Franglen, and Meshell Ndegocello. Tickets for that show are available. It's one of two shows that John Cale is doing for the BAM Next Wave festival.

Thurston & John on stage w/ Sharon Van Etten in Nov. (more by Chris La Putt)
Thurston Moore and his Chelsea Light Moving bandmate John Moloney, who released the collaborative Caught On Tape earlier this year, are teaming up for a NYC show at Union Pool on December 11 with Speedy Ortiz and Lone Wolf (aka Ryan Sawyer, who also appears at Union Pool a few days earlier with Yeah Yeah Yeahs for a Sandy benefit). Admission is $10 at the door.
For Northampton's Speedy Ortiz, the show is part of a short December tour which also includes another Brooklyn show happening on December 13 at Shea Stadium with Grooms, Lushes, and Eartheater. After that tour, they plan to head out with Roomrunner in January but the dates for that tour have not been announced yet. Roomrunner meanwhile open for Future of the Left at Knitting Factory tonight (11/27).
As mentioned, Thurston Moore's ex-Sonic Youth bandmate/wife Kim Gordon will appear at the Dinosaur Jr. You're Living All Over Me show at Terminal 5 (12/1), along with Al Cisneros (Om, Sleep) and Johnny Marr. Kurt Vile opens the show and tickets are still available.
