Jenny & Johnny

Unfortunately, I missed most of the [CMJ] day panels due to work and school - but I was able to get my badge and head over to my favourite venue, Irving Plaza, to see Jenny and Johnny...

At Irving Plaza, a more mature-sounding Jenny Lewis with fresh material awaited my presence. Jenny and Johnny do drift a bit away from Rilo Kiley by adding a mix of country and a male voice to Lewis's new sound. The country guitar twang on "Scissor Runner" was defintely more pronounced when performed live and was appreciated by everyone in attendance. Jenny also dedicated "New York Cartoon" to the people of New York City, which was something I appreciated...
Jonathan Rice has been a great addition to Jenny Lewis's repertoire. Hope there's more Jenny and Johnny in the future. -[B-Sides]

Jenny & Johnny headlined the Ground Control Touring showcase at Irving Plaza last night (10/19), their only CMJ show . The openers on the other hand are each playing other times in NYC this week. They were Wild Nothing, Times New Viking, Happy Birthday, and La Sera.

David Acid Tongue

Jenny Lewis "with special guest Elvis Costello" (he sings the song on her album too) played Letterman last night (Nov 3). David introduced them while holding up the giant sheet of acid, but after they performed their song, Jenny was nowhere to be found and Elvis in turn became the next interviewed guest. They mostly discussed Elvis' new talk show. Elvis said 13 episodes are taped and ready to go (and implied there wouldn't be more than that if the show which debuts on the Sundance Channel on December 3rd is not successful). David seemed sincerely interested from the "you're doing what I do, but different" point of view. Johnathan Rice was also there playing guitar and singing backup. "It was a great show with a nice mix of songs from Rabbit Fur Coat & Acid Tongue and I have to say, the songs from Acid Tongue (most of which I was seeing live for the first time tonight) came across very well, especially "The Next Messiah"! Jenny Lewis took the stage at The Apollo for the second time in a month on Saturday night (Oct 4) (the first time was for an Elvis Costello show taping) (Elvis also appears on her new album). Last weekend Jenny played twice at Austin City Limits.

Sarah Silverman (who made a guest appearance in one of Jenny's videos) made a surprise appearance as the Apollo opener. More pictures below...

Maria Taylor @ Belmont Arts and Music Festival - July 6, 2008 (musicitylights)

Yesterday in San Francisco Maria Taylor's van was broken into. Maria and the band are pretty devastated as the culprits got away with 6 guitars, 2 suitcases, pedals, and plenty of merch. We're hoping some of these items may turn up online or in local San Francisco pawn shops. As you can imagine, this gear has lots of sentimental value as well. If anyone has any information, please have them send a message to info AT saddle-creek DOT com.

Maria has two more shows left with Johnathan Rice and Nik Frietas. They'll be playing with borrowed gear, but the shows will go on!

Last night's Bright Eyes guest was Steve Earle. According to one commenter,

...he guested on 4 songs with BEs.

1. God, is Bush horrible or what?
2. I mean come on, he is really horrible, right?
3. Damn remember how much fun we had on the Vote For Change tour Conor?
4. Under Bush the whole world has gone to hell.

Actually I love Steve Earle and would love to see him with BEs but sometimes the above is what his solo shows start to sound like. He is a rocker with amazing knack for writing great songs, he just needs to lay off the heavy politics sometimes.

Ben's "friend" Johnathan Rice was one of Conor's guest a few nights ago.

Bright Eyes is bringing out a special guest at each of his seven shows at Town Hall in NYC this week. Many were dismayed by the appearance of Lou Reed at night one. Ben Kweller came out during night two, and I'm losing track, but Jenny Lewis was the guest at either night three or four, or both or something like that. I don't have a picture, but there is the recent video of Jenny on stage with Ben Gibbard & John Vanderslice, and here are some photos from October of Jenny on stage with Feist (actually the other way around).....
