Back in December I tried to hip you l'il pups to a new comedic series called "The Talk Show Series Presents..." which takes place, sporadically, in the back room of Williamsburg bar Over the Eight. (Aka the bar that used to be Royal Oak.) The series is a talk-show formatted live show featuring a revolving cast of hosts and guests. My first experience with this fantastic show was back 0n December 5 and that particular installment of the show was hosted by Bobby Tisdale and featured guests Mike Doughty, Jon Benjamin, Andy Blitz, Tim Harrington, and SNL cast member Noel Wells. The show was loose, unscripted, and unbearably fun and featured an absolutely stunning closing number by the great Mike Doughty. It was the most fun I had had in a long time, and I have been eagerly awaiting a follow up installment ever since.

And that wait is finally over! This week, the lucky few who can squeeze into the intimate back room of Over the Eight can thrill to not one but two epic installments of "The Talk Show Series Presents!" The shows, which happen on Thursday (2/27) and Friday (2/28), are titled The Talk Show Series Presents: THE KEVIN CORRIGAN SHOW, and are both hosted by wicked famous actor Kevin Corrigan. The Thursday February 27  instalment features Janeane Garofalo, Steve Buscemi (!), music by Daniel Harnett, and a super, super, unbelievable special guest whose identity I cannot even hint at besides saying he is one of NYC's biggest political figures of all time. If you are lucky enough to be at this show, you'll be so shocked that this man is sitting just a few feet in front of you that you won't even be able to applaud; you'll be too busy processing what you are experiencing. Doors are at 7:30 PM and the show is free. Get there early.

Then On Friday (2/28), enjoy a second installment of The Talk Show Series Presents: THE KEVIN CORRIGAN SHOW. This time, Kevin brings guests Michael Rappaport (currently on Justified), Jonathan Ames (wordsmith, pugilist), Frederic Seaman (John Lennon's personal assistant!) and music from Mirah (who has a new LP and a headlining show in April). There's another special musical guest on the bill who I also am unable to divulge, but I believe they will be billed as "Kelly Slater Sangre". Doors are at 7:30pm and the show is free. Get there early.

Rants and Other Suggestions

Eugene Mirman and Wyatt Cenac are already playing a Hurricane Sandy Relief benefit at The Bell House on November 25 for a special edition of Pretty Good Friends, and Jonathan Ames is doing one on Monday (11/12) at Union Hall, and now the three of them will be teaming up for a different benefit show with Stephin Merritt (The Magnetic Fields), Sarah Vowell, Jonathan Frazen, Gail Collins, John Oliver, and Jon Ronson at Symphony Space's Peter Jay Sharp Theatre on December 7. The show is presented 826NYC and dubbed, "'Rants and Other Suggestions,' a very special evening of readings, performances, and music." Eugene Mirman and Sarah Vowell will be handling hosting duties and the others will be performing. Tickets will be available at the Symphony Space website and all proceeds will benefit 826NYC's writing lab for New York City students.

The Hurricane Sandy Relief benefit shows keep coming. We've already mentioned upcoming benefits with Will Sheff, Eugene Mirman, Dan Deacon, and more. Here's some others that have been announced.

Novelist Jonathan Ames (also creator of HBO's now-cancelled Bored to Death), Amy Sohn (author of Prospect Park West), Henry Alford, Charles Star, Dan Wilbur, and more will appear at Union Hall on Monday (11/2) for "Brooklyn Relief: A Night of Words, Music, and Comedy to Benefit Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts" with musical guests Andy Friedman and Natalia Zukerman. Tickets are on sale now and 100% of proceeds goes to Hurricane Sandy Relief, with %50 going to the Red Hook Initiative and 50% going to the NY Communities Hurricane Relief Fund. They will also have NY Shirts for Sandy available at the show.

There's also another Hurricane Sandy Relief benefit at Union Hall on November 16 with Friend Roulette, Flying Pace, Bright Brown, and Katie Mullins. Tickets for that show are on sale now and proceeds go to Occupy Sandy Hurricane Relief.

On Thursday (11/8) at Idle Hands bar (25 Ave B), Gary Saurez the Human Jukebox will play your requests for cash, with all proceeds going to the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City. Here's how it works:

$5 donation to the Mayor's Fund gets a request for an Alternative Rock song of your choice!

$20 donation to the Mayor's Fund gets a request for any Rock song of your choice!

$50+ to the Mayor's Fund gets a request for ANY song of your choice!

Gary adds, "Songs must be under five minutes long. Please exercise good judgement. Don't request shit like Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music or blackened pornogrind or so help me God I will slap you." The night opens at 8 PM with an hour's worth of DJing from Mr. Dave Hill and then Gary starts playing your requests from 9 PM on. No entry fee. More info is here.

Dean Ween's benefit at The Saint in Asbury Park has been pushed back from its original November 11 date to November 28. At the show, Dean will be joined by Claude Coleman, Glenn McClelland, Chris Harford, Dickie Moist, and "all of the usual suspects" and is a benefit for Dean's friend Nick Honachefsky, who lost his home and all of his possessions.

My Jerusalem is playing Mercury Lounge on Monday (11/12) with Dead Heart Bloom and a portion of Friday at Bellwether in Williamsburg (594 Union Ave) from 10 PM to 4 AM. The show is free and donations for American Red Cross's Hurricane Sandy Relief fund are encouraged.

Gary Clark Jr. played a Sandy benefit at Brooklyn Bowl last night (11/6), which fell in the middle of his three sold out Bowery Ballroom shows (the last one is tonight [11/7]). Alex Joffe tweeted, "At @brooklynbowl as Gary Clark Jr. shreds the room apart & CNN projects 4 more years. Club erupts. And sighs breath of relief. #rockandroll". Check out some videos from his set last night below.

More Hurricane Sandy Relief benefit shows are listed HERE. Let us know of any others that we missed in the comments below.

We already posted lots of posts today. Here's some more, and some reminders too...

Tickets for the Lucero and The Hold Steady NYE show at Wellmont Theatre went on sale today. Did you pick up yours? We just caught Lucero frontman Ben Nichols earlier this week when his acoustic tour came to Austin. Check out pictures at BV Austin. As discussed, Lucero also play two nights at Brooklyn Bowl (12/28-29) before the NYE show. Tickets for those shows go on sale Friday, September 21 at noon.

The New Yorker Festival and other tickets went on sale today too.

Tickets are still on sale for the upcoming Dr. Dog & Delta Spirit show in Rumsey Playfield, and we're giving away a pair on Facebook.

Alabama Shakes are on a tour now which comes to NYC on October 4 at Terminal 5 (sold out). We just caught their tour stop in Chicago earlier this week, a free "dream" show presented by American Family with fellow Alabama bands The Pollies and Doc Dailey on the bill. Check out pictures of that show at BV Chicago.

The rent is still too damn high. Jimmy McMillan will run for mayor in 2013.

The Walkmen played Conan last night (9/13). Check out a video of them performing "Love Is Luck" and "We Can't Be Beat" from their new album, Heaven, below. Tickets are still on sale for their show coming up at Terminal 5 with the Dum Dum Girls.

Wondering which producers contributed to Kanye's G.O.O.D. Music album, Cruel Summer? Check out the updated tracklist with production credits for each song. In related news, you can check out the extended version of "New God Flow," which features Ghostface Killah, over at Pusha T's website.

John Wesley Harding

GOTHAMIST: How did you go about picking who would accompany your (le) Poisson Rouge shows?

John Wesley Harding: People whose work I really like and people with whom I really like to work. You can go through the list like that. Mostly the reaction was very positive, as you can see from who's playing, For example, the one on Wednesday: Rosanne Cash - we weren't friends, but we are now. I'm a huge fan and have been for years. Errollyn Wallen - fantastic classical composer from the UK. She's setting some texts of mine to music and she's going to play one. She's coming over especially for the concert. Colson Whitehead - one of my favourite writers and a neighbour. I asked him to read a piece I saw him reading in Brooklyn recently. Colum McCann - a wonderful writer. We became friends at a literary conference in Paris, stayed up all one night singing folk songs, first in a restaurant with many people, and then in his hotel rooms. It was one of those nights that seemed never to end. I'm hoping Wednesday seems like that too, but in a good way. And of course Eugene Mirman will be there too - and we will then take the show, as "Wes and Eugene's Cabinet of Wonders" all around America - which means it will be him, me, all my friends, but all his friends too.

As previously posted, John Wesley Harding's Cabinet of Wonders scheduled three shows at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC. The first was February 11th, the next is March 11th (TONIGHT), and the last is April 15th. Between now and the final show, John and Eugene will also do the above-mentioned tour together. That even includes a show at SXSW on March 20th. All dates, and lots of pictures from the Feb 11th show (with Jonathan Ames, Rick Moody, Eugene Mirman, Shivaree, Carla Rhodes, and P.T. Walkley), below...
