Danny Brown @ Pitchfork 2014 (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
CROCODILES

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...

Danny Brown, A-Trak, French Montana, AraabMUZIK, The Lox, Brenmar, DJ Hoodboi, Falcons, Yung Gleesh, World's Fair, Nick Catchdubs (w/ B.I.C.), Shash'u, Black Dave, Grandemarshall @ 50 Kent
If you're looking for some all-day fun to finish off your Labor Day, the annual Fool's Gold Day Off, happening at outdoor Williamsburg venue 50 Kent this year, should quench that thirst. As usual, it's a stacked lineup of electronic music and hip hop, headlined by the great Danny Brown (playing for his third year in a row). Also on the bill is veteran NYC trio The LOX (aka Sheek Louch, Styles P and Jadakiss), upcoming Queens crew World's Fair, hotshot producer AraabMuzik, label co-heads A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs (the latter joined by rap crew B.I.C.) and plenty more.

Peter Gutteridge, Mega Bog, Iji, EZTV @ Palisades
Peter Gutteridge spent time in original line-ups of both The Clean and The Chills before starting noise-rock band Snapper in the early '90s. In 1989, he put out a solo album, Pure, which was reissued recently by 540 Records and which he'll be performing in full at the show. Also on the bill: Seattle's Megabog and IJI, plus local jangle/powerpop band EZTV.

MV and EE @ Baby's All Right
MV & EE, aka duo Matt Valentine and Erika Elder, have collaborated with J. Mascis and members of Chelsea Light Moving in the past and released new album, Shade Grown, earlier this year. If you dig jammy trips through droning atmospheres and psych-rock guitar noodling, that should be in effect tonight.

Jozef Van Wissem, Woodsman, Ancient Ocean @ Baby's All Right
If you are coming to see MV and EE, you might consider sticking around for this later set: Woodsman will released their self-titled third album earlier this year via their new home Fire Talk. The band make bold steps into mid fidelity on this one and it suits them well. It's rhythm-heavy in a Can/Neu! kind of way, still with their dark, droning textures swirling around. Gothy lutenist Jozef Van Wissem headlines.

Christines, VANIISH, Interval, Winkie @ Glasslands
You can finish up your holiday weekend -- if you're not wiped out -- with an evening of goth and shoegaze at Glasslands. San Francisco's VANIISH (members of Wax Idols and Soft Moon) are playing their first of two NYC shows tonight, with glide guitar experts Christines, INTERVAL and Winkie, as well as Weekend's Shaun Durkan on DJ duty

Smoke Fairies @ Rough Trade
With their name alone, UK folk act Smoke Fairies conjur up images of early '70s rolling green, wistful dreamy melodies and the like. The band's new album heads a little more into adult contemporary territory, but their harmonies still beguile.

DJ Marfox, DJ Cortega, DJ Underdog, Kashaka @ Output
Portugal electronic musician DJ Marfox just played Warm Up this past Saturday, but that wasn't the only chance you'll get to see him during the day outdoors during this long Labor Day Weekend. He plays Output's roof this afternoon, 2 PM start.

For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our NYC concert calendar.

OLLA

Jim Jarmusch's new film, Only Lovers Left Alive, stars Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston as two vampires whose relationship spans centuries. (Twilight or Vampire Academy, it ain't.) The film made its US debut at the 2013 New York Film Festival and will see actual release on April 11 in select cities. You can check out the trailer below.

The soundtrack to the film is unsurprisingly pretty interesting and is orchestrated by Jarmusch's frequent musical collaborator, Jozef van Wissem. It features collaborations with SQÜRL (Carter Logan, Jim Jarmusch, and Shane Stoneback), Zola Jesus, Lebanese singer/actress Yasmine Hamdan (who is in the film), and Cults singer Madeline Follin, the latter of whom provides vocals on a heavy, trippy cover of Wanda Jackson's classic "Funnel of Love." You can stream the whole soundtrack (via Dazed Digital) below.

Speaking of, Cults have a few dates lined up over the next few weeks, including NYC at Music Hall of Williamsburg on March 6. Shoe company Steve Madden is sponsoring and it's FREE but you do need to get your no-charge tickets through Ticketmaster and are available starting at noon today (2/14). No openers have been announced for the MHOW show, but most of the other dates are with their old tourmates Mood Rings. All Cults tour dates are listed below...

Noveller
Noveller

Lutenist Jozef Van Wissem, who often collaborates with guitarist/film director Jim Jarmusch (they've got a collaborative record out now on Sacred Bones), had initially scheduled a solo gig to happen at Union Pool on June 30, but that show was rescheduled a while back and instead happens this Sunday (7/14). Rounding out the bill will be mesmerizing drone guitarist Noveller and Tom Carter of experimental band Charalambides. Tickets for Sunday's show are on sale now. Updated Jozef Van Wissem dates are listed below.

Meanwhile, speaking of cult film directors who are also musicians signed to Sacred Bones (meaning Jim Jarmusch), David Lynch is releasing his new album, The Big Dream, next week (7/16) via the label. You can now listen to the entire album ahead of its release over at Pitchfork.

Marissa Nadler in Chicago in 2011 (more by Ben Rodig)
Marissa Nadler

As mentioned, lutenist Jozef Van Wissem and guitarist/film director Jim Jarmusch, who put out two albums in 2012, followed by Apokatastasis and a contribution to the Sacred Bones RSD comp this year, are playing a show at Mercury Lounge on May 7 with drone guitarist Noveller (who also plays the Drone Activity In Progress show tonight [5/2]). Tickets for the Mercury Lounge show are still available.

Before Jozef heads over to Europe for a tour there, he'll squeeze in a solo gig happening in NYC at Brooklyn's Saint Vitus Bar on May 12 with a great lineup of dream folk singer Marissa Nadler and Entrance Band frontman Guy Blakeslee (who sang on Jozef & Jim's contribution to the Sacred Bones comp). Tickets for that show are on sale now. The Saint Vitus show is Marissa Nadler's only currently announced date other than Canadian festival MoSoFest, which she plays this June.

Jozef also has a new record out this year, Nihil Obstat. Though this one's a solo record, Jim Jarmusch does appear on it. You can stream the track "Where You Lived And What You Lived For" from the album over at NPR. Jozef will celebrate the album in NYC after his European tour with a release show on June 30 at Union Pool. No advance tickets for that show at the moment.

All dates are listed, along with Jozef Van Wissem & Jim Jarmusch and Marissa Nadler videos, below...

The Men at Bowery Ballroom in March (more by David Andrako)
The Men

We just told you about a bunch of Record Store Day releases that we're excited for, and here's one more that should be pretty great. Sacred Bones is releasing the third installment of their Todo Muere series, and this one features tracks from The Men, Moon Duo, a Psychic Ills remix of Follakzoid, Jozef Van Wissem & Jim Jarmusch, Zola Jesus, The Holydrug Couple, Wymond Miles, and Case Studies. Check out the album art and stream The Men's contribution, "B Minor," a track from their New Moon sessions, below.

The Men are on tour now and will be back in NYC for a Northside Festival show on June 14 at Warsaw with the Greg Ginn/Ron Reyes incarnation of Black Flag, Ginn's other project Good For You, and Netherlands (sold out). They're also playing 4Knots Festival at the South Street Seaport on June 29, though that lineup has not been announced in full yet. Stay tuned.

Jozef Van Wissem and Jim Jarmusch also have a NYC show coming up which happens at Mercury Lounge on May 7 with drone guitar great Noveller. Tickets for that show go on sale today (4/12) at noon. It's Jozef & Jim's only US date before heading overseas for Primavera Sound and other shows.

Jozef Van Wissem & Jim Jarmusch

Filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and Dutch composer Jozef Van Wissem teamed up for an album titled Concerning The Entrance Into Eternity (due out 2/28 via Important Records) and performed in support of it at Issue Project Room earlier this month (2/3). The performance, like the album, features Jarmusch on guitar and Van Vissem on lute. A video from it is below.

The two will team up again for another NYC show which happens at Le Poisson Rouge on March 5. That show is with Matteah Baim and a Drag City-signed special guest. Tickets are on sale now.

In other Jim Jarmusch news, he's featured on the new 15-minute Fucked Up single, along with Austra and Annie-Claude Deschênes, which you can listen to HERE.

Jozef Van Wissem & Jim Jarmusch

"Any Jim Jarmusch buff could tell you that the man has great taste in music. Take the original scores for Stranger than Paradise and Dead Man, by John Lurie and Neil Young, respectively--stand-alone masterpieces that mesh beautifully with the director's stark black-and-white palette--or the killer lineup (Stooges, Sleep, Raekwon) he put together for the 2010 ATP New York fest. Curating isn't the same as performing, though, and even a disciple hip to Jarmusch's stint as keyboardist for early-'80s NYC art punks the Del-Byzanteens might second-guess his current instrumental abilities.

So what a happy surprise it is that Concerning the Entrance Into Eternity (Important), a new record that pairs Jarmusch's guitar with Jozef Van Wissem's lute, is one of the young year's most engaging listens: an album that dispels within seconds any sense of a filmmaker turned dilettante musician. -[Time Out NY]

Concerning The Entrance Into Eternity is not due, via Important Records, until 2/28, but both Dutch lutanist and composer Jozef Van Wissem & Jim Jarmusch will celebrate the release with performances at Issue Project Room on February 3rd at 8PM and 10PM. Tickets for the early show appear to be sold out, but the late show is still on sale (same ticket link for both).

Check out a song from the record as well as a live set of the pair at WNYC below.

Ocean at Show No Mercy (more by Justina Villanueva)
Ocean

Important Records will round up a gang of bands from their roster to perform at Issue Project Room on August 15th as part of a collaborative effort between the label and venue. Master Musicians of Bukkake will headline the event, bringing along Jozef Van Wissem, Duane Pitre, Helena Espvall + Fursaxa, Arborea, Kouhei Matsunaga, Ocean, The New Monuments (C. Spencer Yeh, Ben Hall and Don Deitrich), CAVE and Diane Cluck. Tickets are on sale.

Master Musicians of Bukkake musically have very little to do with that depraved sexual act, but much more to do with the Pacific Northwest's penchant for experimentalism:

Featuring members of EARTH, ASVA, BURNING WITCH, THE DIMINISHED MEN, and special guests from Secret Chiefs 3 and the thriving Istanbul music scene... MMOB has now solidified into a 7 piece cosmic psyche force. Like a reverse dark side of the New Age sound, ...Master Musicians of Bukkake perform ritualistic electric excursions into the outer and inner reaches. Relying more on the electric power of psyched guitars, analog synth chants, and exotic heavy percussion. ...Outer spaced gamelan, dusty fuzz rock from celestial deserts, meditations of a deranged Krishna gathering, and the Blurry acoustic guitar majesty of The Cascade mountains all reveal themselves....
MMOB's latest release is Totem 2, is out now via Important. The LP was recorded, mixed and produced by Randall Dunn (Six Organs of Admitance, Sunno))), Earth ,etc). Dig on two songs from that LP above.

Meanwhile, a few of the bands playing the Important Records celebration have new releases to celebrate. Duane Pitre is celebrating the release of his new LP of guitar and string minimalism, out now via Origin via Thrill Jockey Records (stream excerpts). Fursaxa has a new-ish LP of freak folk in Mycorrhizae Realm featuring Helena Espvall on cello.

CAVE has another date on the eve of the Important Records show; look for the California psychedelics to take the stage at Cake Shop on August 14th (not The Studio at Webster Hall as originally announced). CAVE's Pure Moods 12" is out now via Drag City.

Full Cave, Arborea, and Diane Cluck dates, as well as some video are below.
