Jucifer's 69 speaker backline blasted away on a crowd at Union Pool on Friday night (7/15). The show was part of Jucifer's eternal tour that is currently preparing to dot Canada in late July. Full dates are below.
Support came from an awesome batch of young bands. Ohio's Mockingbird, who was coming to the conclusion of a set of East Coast dates, were on the road in celebration of a new and self-titled EP. Check out the new EP of sludgy-noise rock now, which is streamable in part at CD Baby. Philadelphia's Ominous Black's sludgy post-hardcore was also well loved, bringing to mind bands like Russian Circles and Isis. Stream some material from their Split with Sadgaqacea below.

Jucifer at Union Pool (more by Samantha Marble)

Jucifer will hit the road for a string of tour dates that will include NYC at Union Pool on July 15th. There they'll intersect with a Mocking Bird tour with a third band still to come. $10 gets you in.
Also in the coming couple weeks is Bongripper! The tour will be their first trek through the NYC area, and they'll play two nights of shows... July 10th at Acheron with Wizardry and July 11th at Lit Lounge with Bezoar. Stream some awesome indtrumental doom from the band below, and head out to the shows!
Yob and Dark Castle are on the road.
Cannabis Corpse, who have a new album, has been added to the previously discussed Sourvein show.
Northless, who put out the killer Clandestine Abuse, has added an NYC show at Lit Lounge on August 15th as part of an East Coast tour.
The now-on-Matador Ceremony play 538 Johnson tonight (7/1). Cro-Mags are at Bowery Ballroom with Wisdom in Chains, Death Threat, and Razorblade Handgrenade.
I am definitely feeling this new Oathbreaker LP, Mælstrøm which is out NOW via Deathwish and streaming below in full. The Belgium band features members of Amenra, and the LP was recorded by none other than Kurt Ballou. Highly reccomended!
The stream, more suggested NYC shows and some video below.

Amber of Jucifer is electric!

Jucifer's twitter bio describes their stage setup as "63 speakers + 6,000 watts can't be wrong." But it can be wrong; loud definitely doesn't always equal good. Fortunately in Jucifer's case, it does, and the band turned out Union Pool on June 26th as part of the Northside Fest (after Floor at Europa) with a molotov cocktail of doom, black metal, and general malady culled from their recent Throned in Blood.
Jucifer was supported by Reading PA's Gloominous Doom, who churned out an early potpourri of various styles of metal, venturing into punk and even ska. Unfortunately, no pics of Gloom Doom, but tons more pics of Jucifer are below, who are currently heading to the Great White North to test power grids with their bowel-shaking metal.

Jucifer at Cake Shop (more by Justina Villanueva)

Northside is here, and that means that we are just days from the Floor/Unearthly Trance/Javelina/Hot Graves destruction party at Europa and the Jucifer / Gloominous Doom wrecking ball at Union Pool. The show is the first of many for the forever-on-the-road Jucifer, who scoots into Canada in early July and hits the west coast by August. Floor's NYC date is one of only TWO Northeast dates for the reunited Florida crew, with Philly getting their taste of that thunder string on June 25th (also with Javelina).
Hot Graves will be in town through Sunday, as the Florida band is scheduled to do a doubleheader with Occultist on June 27th. The party starts at a matinee at The Acheron with the great Batillus and a later show at The Charleston with Concussion. Full dates are below.
If you don't have a Northside badge, or you haven't bought tickets for Floor yet (still available... procrastinators!), don't fret there is still time to purchase both (no advance tickets for Jucifer), OR you can try your luck at winning one of FOUR pairs to Floor or one of FOUR pairs to Jucifer! Details on how to win are at the bottom of this post, along Jucifer dates and some video...

How do you follow up a band like FLOOR? BV & 1000 Knives are proud to present the Floor afterparty, AKA the return of 10,000 watt sludge duo Jucifer with the goofy fuck-ups in Gloominous Doom at Union Pool on 6/26 as part of the Northside Festival. Doors for Jucifer will open at 10PM, just a short time after Floor leaves the stage at Europa, leaving plenty of time scoot on over from Europa to Union Pool to continue the ROCK.
Both shows have a certain amount of tickets reserved for Northside Festival badge holders. Advanced tickets for Floor are also still available. Jucifer will be $10 for non-badges at the door.
Alternatively, 6/26 is also the BV Northside showcase at MHOW with Memory Tapes, Twin Sister, DOM and ZAZA. Tickets are still on same for that too if that's more your thing.
Jucifer recently dropped their new album Throned In Blood. Pick up a copy at The Omega Order.
Some videos, including the new Jucifer video for "Contempt", and current tour dates are below, with more to come.

Ryan of The Howling Wind w/ Unearthly Trance (more by Samantha Marble)

Ryan Lipynsky probably best known for his role as doom-destroyer in Unearthly Trance, but he's been around the block with projects as varying as Motive, Pollution, Thralldom and The Howling Wind, who will release their latest LP Into The Cryosphere via Profound Lore in April. The Howling Wind, which includes Tim Call of Parasitic Records, Aldebaran, and others, toils in icy doom and black metal much like the ripping "Teeth of Frost" available above. The band also has the Mortuary Library 7" due out later this year via Parasitic.
In related news, NYC doomers Unearthly Trance have hit the studio to record their new album V with Sanford Parker. The band currently has one show on their calendar, April 21st at The Charleston with Lair of The Minotaur as part of a string of East Coast dates in celebration of Evil Power, their new album due out on their own The Grind-House Records imprint. Look for that LP in middle April.
Raw and punishing Japanese grind returns with Grind Killers, the new LP from Unholy Grave! Recorded live in a Dutch studio in September 2008, these 23 tracks were mastered last year and will see a release on Selfmadegod Records in March 2010. Check out "Little Bastards" available for download above. Meanwhile, Selfmadegod will also release a Peel Sessions disc with Agothocles recorded in 1997 and The Grind Years from Psycho.
Coliseum with new drummer Carter Wilson (far right)
Coliseum has signed with Temporary Residence Limited! The band has completed recording their new LP with J Robbins which will see the light of day this summer and will feature appearances from Will Oldham, members of Young Widows, Jason Noble, and many others. Congrats boys!
Harvey Milk will release their new album, A Small Turn of Human Kindness via Hydrahead on May 18th! Can't wait. The current tracklisting is below. Make sure and catch Harvey Milk with Coalesce and The Atlas Moth on tour and at Le Poisson Rouge on 3/8 (tix).
The "De-cancellation Tour" routing is almost complete! Make sure and catch Ludicra on the road this spring doing select dates with Krallice including Europa on 4/18 as part of a BV/Osiris presentation! Tickets are on sale. Full tour routing is below.
The dark forces of Coffinworm have revealed more details from their upcoming shadowy effort for Profound Lore, When All Became None. Sanford Parker has helmed the sludgy blackened doom LP, which features six tracks and is due for release in April. Dig on "Start Saving For Your Funeral" from the LP, downloadable above. Coffinworm will appear at the BV/CC/1000K Pizza Party alongside Zoroaster, Landmine Marathon, and many others. Album art is below.

Javelina @ the Northside BV-BBG Showcase (more by Jason Walker)

Alright! I get it. Doomriders rules. Revocation is up there. There's a new Converge and Baroness on the way. But even with all of those great releases, it suprises me that Javelina isn't near some of the top of those lists. The band's filthy debut was a monster and their new one, Beasts Among Sheep, only adds to their considerable reputation. If you are a fan of the last LP, this one is a must have. Dig on "Stepchild" above and preorder the limited edition LP version of Javelina's Beasts Among Sheep via Brutal Panda Records and the CD version via Translation Loss.
Speaking of that Doomriders album, Darkness Come Alive is out NOW via Deathwish Records. Though the party vibe that permeated through Black Thunder is mostly gone, it has been replaced by a propulsive punk rock fury and, at times, a Misfits-era Danzig croon (see "Come Alive")! There are quite a few killer moments on this long-player, but we present to you the most "fuck you" of them all, the galloping "Lions" downloadable above!
In our last round up, we shined a light on into the deepest fathoms of Australia and the truly frightening Portal. The band's claustrophobic and positively frightening new death metal LP, Swarth, relies as much on freak-out atmosphere as it does killer discordant riffery. Swarth is due out on 10/20 via Profound Lore and we have a second taste in the form of "Omenknow" above.
Misery Index have completed four new songs and are looking to enter the studio in early 2010 to record their follow up to Traitors! Stoked.
Iron Age @ Cake Shop (more by Jason Walker)

I still remember that kick ass Cake Shop show with Iron Age, Mind Eraser, and Sex Vid, and walking out of that show wanting more. Thankfully, I can add to those great memories with a PAIR of Iron Age shows in the coming weeks! First up, the rowdy Texans will team up with the great Mother of Mercy (profiled here) for a show at Cake Shop (10/16). The next day (10/17), look for the band to pull a double header with a day show at Generation Records and a night show at The Charleston with Brain Killer, Naam & Descender. Speaking of Mind Eraser, the band will team up with the kick ass Iron Lung for a string of east coast dates which will include Cake Shop on 11/8! Full Iron Age and Iron Lung dates are below.
Black Skies will release the limited edition vinyl from their 2008 EP Hexagon on I'm Better Than Everyone Else Records. The Chapel Hill doom trio is currently on the hunt for drummer #5, but not before blessing us with some seriously killer riffage in the form of "Smoke & Mirrors" above. Preorder Hexagon here.
Power Pellut is also releasing their debut LP via I'm Better than Everyone Else Records. Preorder that here and dig on "Black Betty" from that LP above!
Church of Misery will release a live record culled from their recent set at Roadburn 2009! More details are to come, but look for Burning World to do the honors in November/December of this year. In the meantime, dig on this killer live video from Roadburn 2009!
That video, news on Kowloon Walled City, Boris, Asphyx, Struck By Lightning, Ringworm, Repulsion and more!

Jucifer!

Jucifer has announced plans to release the "super limited" Autocannibalist split EP with Show of Bedlam, due this fall on Choking Hazard Records. The band is currently streaming a black metal and blackened-doom leaning tracks on their myspace.
The EP is exciting news, but it also provides an opportunity to report that the power grid is still intact following Jucifer's usual 4 trillion watt performance that rumbled, rattled, and rocked Cake Shop on July 15th with J.A.C.K. and Mount Vicious. If ever there was a band devoted to their craft, Jucifer is it, touring incessantly and calling the Winnebago parked outside of the venue (that they will stuff with SEVEN cabinets and a full cabinet-sized rack of effects) home. Jucifer is currently back on the road as part of an ongoing tour of Canada, and on to the West Coast and on and on and on....
Jucifer released L'Autrichienne on Relapse last year. Full tour dates for Jucifer as well as pics of them, J.A.C.K. & Mount Vicious are below...

Ulcerate

Back to bludgeon.... it's This Week in Metal! This week, we kick things off with a death metal record that is currently in high rotation, Ulcerate's searing new LP Everything is Fire. Out NOW via Willowtip, check out a pair of MP3s from that LP available above. This New Zealand band are able to hit that seemingly impossible sweet-spot where brutality meets technicality and melody meets dissonance. Highly recco'd!
Bloody Panda is back a new LP due on Profound Lore, Summon. Due August 11, the band will release a CD/DVD for Summon which will include seven tracks, one of which ("Miserere", an excerpt above) is interpreted visually on DVD. Yoshiko Ohara, their signature vocalist and a known visual artist, is responsible for the cover art. The DVD was shot, in Brooklyn and Indonesia, and edited by band members Bryan Camphire, Blake McDowell, and Josh Rothenberger. Josh also told us that...
the whole DVD project came about through our collaboration with Cave dance studio on Grand St. in Williamsburg. It was there that we met Berlin-based Butoh dancer Yuko Kaseki a few years ago. We Asked her to dance to one of our tunes last year, and then shot most of the DVD at Cave with her last August/Septemeber.More details to come. Bloody Panda hits the road on July 21st, full tour dates are forthcoming!
Fresh off of a triumphant set at Maryland Deathfest, Asphyx is back and will domestically release their new album, Death...The Brutal Way via Ibex Moon. Due September 1st, the record will also be released in a limited edition version with a live DVD, Live at Party.San Open Air Festival 2007. Asphyx recently welcomed Martin van Drunen (Pestilence, Hail of Bullets, Bolt Thrower) back into the fold after his departure 17 years ago.
Black September, who first came onto my radar via their work with Thou and Winters In Osaka, has a new 7" out NOW, The Sermon of Vengeance. Mastered at The Boiler Room by Collin Jordan (Nachtmystium, Minsk), check out "Purification", one of two new tracks by the black metal punks from The Sermon of Vengeance above and order that 7", as well as other releases here.
Pelican's new EP, the tour only CD Ephemeral, is out on 12" at Southern Lord packaged with a Seldon Hunt designed tee. In addition, Earth's previously rare Radio/Live LP is available via Southern Lord as well.
Filth-ridden hardcore is the order of business for Syracuse's Oak & Bone, a badge the band wears with pride on their debut 7" out NOW via Hex Records (one time home to Ed Gein, Engineer, Playing Enemy, and Cursed). Check out "Build Walls" from that 7" above. The crew recently played NYC with another fave of mine, crusty black-metal punks Infernal Stronghold, and are prepping to release a split 7" with Like Wolves on Barbarossa Records. Pick up their debut 7" and look for that split!
Anaal Nathrakh's Mick Kenney is back with his former bandmates in Mistress to resurrect Fukpig, who released their last LP Nuclear Apocalypse in 2003. Pick up Spewings From A Selfish Nation before it's gone (100 copies total!). Anaal Nathrakh's In The Constellation Of The Black Widow is out June 26th via Candellight. Preorder the vinyl at Mick/Shane Embury's FETO records.
A preview of that Fukpig, as well as news on Down touring with Melvins(!!!) Jucifer, Celeste, Mastodon, Clutch, and much more below...

Black Cobra's Feather & Stone is now available on gatefold LP at their webstore. Weedeater is still touring off the might of God Luck & Good Speed.
Just because At The Gates doubleheader (July 9th & 10th @ Irving Plaza) (and many of their announced dates) is sold out, doesn't mean that the Bjorler twins are forgetting their day job. The Haunted dropped an update on their new record and plans to tour the US in 2009!
Roooooadtrip! Kirk Windstein (Crowbar, Down, Kingdom Of Sorrow) has announced that Crowbar and the legendary Eyehategod will share the stage in New Orleans at One-Eyed Jack's on August 29th for their 20th anniversary show! Crowbar also recently announced that they will tour "every country that's got electricity" with their forthcoming 2009 album.
Totimoshi and Nebula announced a US tour, sweeping coast to coast in early August and concluding in mid-September. NYC has been blessed with August 25th at the Knitting Factory with Tournament.
