Julie Christmas @ Union Pool w/ Made out of Babies (more by Paul Birman)

Attention law enforcement, Julie Christmas will not fold under questioning. The solo artist and Made Out of Babies vocalist was gracious enough to withstand my interrogation about her new LP, The Bad Wife, at the recent Kylesa surprise show. But when it came to details about a live debut of said material, all I got was a very tentative "soon". We'll wait with baited breath for that to happen, but until then, The Bad Wife is lying in wait and due for release on November 9th via Rising Pulse Records. Made Out of Babies is currently working on a new, um, baby for release in the spring of 2011 (live dates will follow).
Made Out of Babies fans can take solace in the fact that while The Bad Wife is definitely a solo effort, the LP features appearances from the whole gang, and includes that fist-raising, patented crunch we got frorm MOob's The Ruiner. In addition to those moments of melodic pummel, Julie Christmas churns out somber and quieter tunes about loss accompanied by accordian, strings, and piano, all while retaining her patented songwriting style. Order a copy of the new LP at the Rising Pulse site. Download "Headless Hawks" above and stream that song and two others ("July 31st and "Bow" with accompanying video) below...

A Storm Of Light

It's been less than 18 months since their first one, and A Storm of Light (mems. Neurosis, ex-Tombs) are already venturing toward album two with Forgive Us Our Trespasses, out Tuesday (9/22) via Neurot Recordings. The album features contributions from Jarboe, Lydia Lunch and many others. The band is currently streaming "Midnight" at their MySpace but hasn't let any other tracks slip out... until now! BrooklynVegan is proud to present the US premiere of the video for "Tempest", available exclusively below!
So far A Storm of Light has only one US date on their calendar, a FREE album release show at Ace of Clubs on 10/12 joined by Biclops and Naked Heroes! After that, Josh & the boys hop on a plane to tear a hole in the space-time continuum at the Damnation Festival before embarking on a European tour with the mighty Minsk.
In related news, Graham's critically acclaimed project Battle of Mice has, not surprisingly, called it quits. The band, which included Julie Christmas of Made Out of Babies as well as members of Dub Trio released the statement is below:

Directly following the shredtastic (and fantastic) set by perky finger-tapper Marnie Stern (pics forthcoming), Made Out of Babies hit the Main Stage at Saturday's Brooklyn Vegan Day Party (10/25). Like a demon possessed, Julie Christmas hurled herself back and forth on stage while entangled in the microphone cord. Her lilting singing voice, more prevalent (today anyway) demonic anguish-ridden screams, and even a few gutteral grunts were showcased in full at the Knitting Factory, and it was both mesmerizing and frightening.
It takes a hell of a band to match that fury and spectacle on stage, but Brendan, Cooper, and Matthew obliged effortlessly with a post-rock-y sense of dynamics and blistering riffs that roared on standouts like "Cooker" and "Invisible Ink" from The Ruiner (out now) and "Mr Prison Shanks" (live video from the show below, dig on the grunts) from their last LP Coward. Dudes know how to throw a party.
During the final seconds of their set, I ran backstage to make sure Rival Schools had everything they needed. While back there, I witnessed Julie post-show, slumped to the floor underneath a stairwell with knees to chest in the fetal position. All I could think to myself was, "she just laid it all out there".
Made Out of Babies played the main stage at the same time Trap Them played the Old Office. Reminder: Trap Them is playing Union Pool in Brooklyn tonight (10/28).
Julie Christmas is also part of the band Spylacopa with John LaMacchia (Candiria), Greg Puciato (The Dillinger Escape Plan), and Jeff Caxide (Isis). They drop their debut EP this month.
