"Kimya and guest performer Eliot" (hortensejones)

So you're up for a Grammy with the "Juno" soundtrack.Juno won the Grammy for "Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media"Kimya Dawson: (Heaves a sigh) Yeah. (Laughs)
Was it weird for you to be on the No. 1 album last year?
Uh, it was funny. But it was pretty silly. I mean, the songs were in a movie that was really, really popular; and it was just a really good movie. So I think that the way the movie made people feel really made my music more relatable. ... It wasn't like (boatloads) of people were suddenly getting what I do.
Have you gotten calls to appear on other soundtracks?
I've got a few songs on a film that's coming out (that) just premiered at Sundance called "Unmade Beds." And it's (made by) an Argentine director named Alexis Dos Santos. He made a film called "Glue" a few years ago that had a few of my songs in it. ... He had invited me to perform at the premiere last week. But I had started a community choir in Olympia; and our first performance was that night, so I couldn't miss that.
Kimya Dawson is playing Europa in Brooklyn on March 10th with Shellshag. Tickets are on sale. The show is one day before she plays the REM tribute show at Carnegie Hall which is one day before she plays SUNY Purchase. All dates below...

When it comes to licensing, Tom Waits has a strong reputation..
Waits has steadfastly refused to allow the use of his songs in commercials and has joked about other artists who do. ("If Michael Jackson wants to work for Pepsi, why doesn't he just get himself a suit and an office in their headquarters and be done with it?") He has filed several lawsuits against advertisers who used his material without permission. He has been quoted as saying, "Apparently, the highest compliment our culture grants artists nowadays is to be in an ad -- ideally, naked and purring on the hood of a new car," he said in a statement, referring to the Mercury Cougar. "I have adamantly and repeatedly refused this dubious honor....Speaking in an interview in 2005 to NPR's All Things Considered, Waits bluntly says "I'd rather have a hot lead enema" than have a song in a commercial. At the time he was referring to products like Doritos, cars and diapers. His stance isn't as strong when it comes to a good cause. His song "Never Let Go" is the soundtrack to a new PSA by the Ad Council for Feeding America....In 2005, Waits sued Adam Opel AG, claiming that, after having failed to sign him to sing in their Scandinavian commercials, they had hired a soundalike singer. In 2007, the suit was settled, and Waits gave the sum to charity." [Wikipedia]
The campaign, shot by American History X director Tony Kaye, launched November 25th and is intended to raise awareness and drive action to fight hunger in America.
Created pro bono by Ogilvy NY, the new TV, radio, print, and web advertising aims to change the way Americans look at this critical issue affecting our country and to understand the fact that many people they interact with on a daily basis may not know where their next meal will come from...Waits says of the project: "We all need to be reminded that the folks who need help getting back on their feet are all members of our family." Watch the two different PSAs below.
"We are thrilled to partner with Feeding America to educate Americans about just how close hunger is to each one of us," according to Peggy Conlon, President & CEO of The Advertising Council. "I believe that the 1 in 8 campaign will inspire Americans to become involved in this critical issue.""This work uses simple visual imagery to demonstrate the reality of the fact that everyone today knows someone who is hungry," said Antonio Navas and Chris Bradley, creative directors at Ogilvy who developed the campaign. "We were very fortunate to get musician Tom Waits to contribute a beautiful piece of music - "Never Let Go" off of 2006's Orphans -- that helps bring the work to life and connect with the public in a tangible way. We believe it will have great impact on this important cause."
Per the Ad Council model, the PSAs will be distributed to media outlets nationwide this week and will run and air in advertising time and space that is donated by the media.
Other Notable Licensing News:
Another band that usually passes on licensing requests for its music is Arcade Fire. The Canadian band decided to let its song "My Body Is A Cage" be used in the trailer for the new Brad Pitt movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
According to the Arcade Fire's management, "This is the first time the band have used their music in this way. David Fincher asked them to look at the trailer. They all thought it was a good use of the music. They have no issue with licensing music when it's used in a creative way. It rarely happens." [Pitchfork]Watch the trailer below.
The soundtrack to Juno continues to inspire advertising creatives. One of Barry Louis Polisar's songs from that soundtrack, "All I Want Is You", gives it a go in a spot for the National Lottery in the UK. The commercial can be seen below.
I've seen the commercial for Ubisoft's new Prince Of Persia game on air this past week. Just like the trailer (watch it below), the spot features the song "Saeglopur" by Sigur Ros. This is the second video game featuring Sigur Ros music - EA's trailer for Dead Space (released in October 2008) uses "Track 7" as the soundtrack.
The Shins' "Sleeping Lessons" provides a cool soundtrack to Statkraft Energy's new European commercial. Watch it at Boards Mag.
Sony has released quite a few new commercials recently for both the PS3 and PSP that have good musical soundtracks. The "Mural" spot features "Everybody Ona Move" by Michael Franti & Spearhead, "LA Plays PSP" has The Grouch featuring MURS' "The Bay To LA", and "NYC Plays PSP" uses Chromeo's "Fancy Footwork". Watch the last one below.

Tickets are STILL on sale for tonight's Kimya Dawson show at Music Hall of Williamsburg (July 2, 2008). It's a benefit with a bunch of bands on the bill that only costs $20, and for what it's worth, it's in a smaller venue than her last and next NYC shows *.
Has the Juno buzz worn off a little? It should be strong now that there's all this pregnancy talk that has "the Most Successful Indie Film in Six Years" back in the news. Maybe parents are afraid to let their kids near Kimya....
With a lot of attention on teen pregnancy these days, parents can use the news to talk about sex and pregnancy with their children. Here are some tips from experts.Juno is the new Judas Priest. Okay, I made the last tip up (not the one before it though), but young girls across the world are apparently watching Juno and getting Knocked Up like crazy... or are they?- Have age-appropriate discussions about sex. Answer their questions openly and honestly.
- Talk about teen pregnancy. Ask your kids what they thinks about "Juno" and Jamie Lynn Spears' pregnancy, says Bill Albert, spokesman for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy....
- Throw away your kids' Moldy Peaches albums...
[Associated Press]
Juno" actor Jason Bateman has defended the Oscar-winning movie against claims it has encouraged teenage girls to get pregnant.Adam Green and Ozzy Osbourne could not be reached for comment...He tells "Access Hollywood," "I don't know the specifics, but I can speak about what sort of responsibility entertainment should hold for social behavior.
"Unfortunately, we've had these instances where guys kill people because of what they hear in rock 'n roll lyrics or some garbage like that. Look, if you're going to blame a movie or song for your actions, whether they be good or bad, I think you're looking at the wrong things to influence your life.
"What we're doing is providing entertainment in different flavors for your consumption. I think people should look to other areas of their life for lessons and guidance, mainly parents, or teachers, or friends, or whomever. That should probably be where you should point your eyes and ears." [SFGate]

Adam Green @ Town Hall, NYC - May 10, 2008

Adam Green, the beloved New York singer-songwriter with the deep baritone voice and quirky sense of humor, played his largest headlining show to date last Saturday at Town Hall. When he said on The View that he was playing there, I thought it was the perfect setting for him and it was about time. He may come off as this jokey musician with nonsensical lyrics to Joe Public, but from following his solo career, I knew he takes his music seriously. So, Town Hall suits him fine. [Music Snobbery]Tim Fite and Laura Marling opened the show on Saturday.
Adam Green's next NYC show will be something much smaller. This info is posted on Rehab (formerly Club Midway)'s website....
positively avenue bThe Juno soundtrack is probably the main reason Adam can play a venue as large as Town Hall now (and why he was on The View) (and why Kimya Dawson is suddenly headlining Webster Hall).

Now now there are two Juno soundtracks. "Juno B-Sides: Almost Adopted Songs" is also streaming at Spinner (though this one has no Adam or Moldy Peaches, but it does have Kimya...and Yo La Tengo, Belle & Sebastian, and Ellen Page...).
And for even more Ellen Page: The Broken Social Scene-soundtracked film The Tracey Fragments is now in theaters.
Adam Green also has some shows scheduled with Lightspeed Champion, and he's playing all the places listed below....

I saw Sweeney Todd last night. I loved it. I kind of wish it was nominated for 'Best Picture', but it wasn't. "Atonement," "Juno," "Michael Clayton," "No Country for Old Men," and "There Will Be Blood." were though. I still need to see Atonement. I don't really know anything about Michael Clayton. Johnny Depp was nominted for best actor, so that's good. Ratatouille is up for best animated film - yay Patton Oswalt. All nominees below...

Kimya is the new Feist - outside Sound Fix Records - Jan 15, 2007 (CRED)

In support of the Juno soundtrack, The Moldy Peaches will be performing “Anyone Else But You” on The View on Monday, January 21, at 11am on ABC. Please check local listings for time and channel identification, and of course, please tune in!I'm not sure how I feel about that, and I don't mean because of the writers. It's just...The View?!? Kimya and Adam were supposed to do it on Conan, but pulled out when they realized there was still a strike.
In other news, Kimya scheduled another show @ Sound Fix....
This show is for all of the people outside on Tuesday night who couldn't get in and signed the list that was floating around. Anyone on the list must show up before 7pm. We'll open the doors to anyone not on the list at 7. It's first-come, first-served, so get there early...seriously.The new show date is January 21st, and speaking of dates: Adam Green's new record "Sixes & Sevens" is out on Rough Trade on March 18th.
Kimya Dawson @ Sound Fix, Brooklyn, NY - Jan 15, 2007 (CRED)

Kimya Dawson just played two shows in Brooklyn - one in the afternoon with Tiny Masters of Today at Southpaw, and then the next day at Sound Fix. Leia Jospe went to the Sound Fix show - to see it, and hopefully return with some pics, but she didn't have much luck....
I went to Kimya tonight...and even an hour and a half early the place was filled up to full capacity, with about 100 people waiting outside to get in. Some woman at Sound Fix said that they weren't letting anyone else in, and it was cold out and after waiting about 30 minutes in the cold to see if anything would change, I kind of gave up. That's what you get with free shows, huh? Crazy Juno fans! That sucks, but Kimya's success makes me happy, and luckily GOPster was there to capture the moment, and Kimya is playing again in Brooklyn tonight.
The Juno CD is selling really well (in fact, it's #1). I have two to give away. E-mail BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: Kimya) to win. Two winners will be picked at random and contacted.
UPDATE: grumpy NYCTaper taped the Southpaw show.

Of this week's music releases, I can most highly recommend the soundtrack to the film, Juno. Between the theatrical release of the film and this album, I am thrilled that the music of Kimya Dawson will reach a wider audience.
Other recommended releases this week include several Bangles reissues (including the wonderfully poppy All Over the Place), Marah's Angels of Destruction!, and Sia's Some People Have Real Problems.
What new releases you picking up this week? What can you recommend?
