The 2014 nominees for "Canada's Music Awards" have been announced.

Weeknd

Canadian R&B singer The Weeknd, who picked up two Juno Awards this year (including R&B Album of the Year for Trilogy), is getting read to release a new album, Kiss Land. There isn't a release date (though 8/27 is rumored) or any other details yet, but you can stream the record's title track, all seven minutes of it, below.

Grimes aboard the SS Coachella 2012 (more by Greg Cristman)
Grimes

Names like Grimes, Stars, Woods of Ypres (RIP), Crystal Castles, Metric and Leonard Cohen sit side-by-side with names like Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jebsen, Celine Dion and Drake as part of the 2013 nominees for the Juno Awards, Canada's answer to the Grammys.

"Electronic Album of the Year" nominee Grimes is most likely stoked to be named in the company of some of her favorite artists of 2011 (namely, Beiber & Taylor Swift). Her competition in that category is pretty stiff: Purity Ring, TRUST, Crystal Castles and Daphni. Meanwhile, I'm guessing Justin Bieber is stoked to not be mentioned anywhere near his arch enemy Patrick Carney, even though Carney has backed off a bit and is now known as himself again on Twitter.

The 2013 Juno Awards will be given out on April 21. Nominee list below...

It was the official Canadian music-industry consecration of Arcade Fire at this year's edition of the Juno Awards, with the Montreal alt-rockers nabbing four trophies, more than any other artist. Arcade Fire won album of the year for "The Suburbs", group of the year, songwriter of the year ( for "Ready to Start", "We Used To Wait", and "Sprawl II"), and alternative album (also for "The Suburbs").

The Juno Awards, Canada's music awards, were doled out at a ceremony at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto Sunday (3/27) night, with the show broadcast live on the CTV Network.

The multiple wins for Arcade Fire follow the ultra-hot outfit's recent win for best album at the Grammy Awards, a win that took many by surprise. Shortly after the Grammys, Arcade Fire also won for best international group and international album at the Brit Awards in London.

... Canadian pop star Justin Bieber also won two Junos, for pop album (for "My World 2.0") and the Juno Fan Choice Award. Bieber was in Rotterdam Sunday, on tour, and accepted his awards via pre-taped video acceptance speeches.

Canadian rock icon Neil Young was voted artist of the year, which led him to quip on stage: "What year is this?" Young was also given, as previously announced, the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award and his moving acceptance speech was one of the highlights of the night. On Saturday night, in a non-broadcast ceremony, Young also won for adult alternative album for "Le Noise". Daniel Lanois also won as producer of the year for both "Le Noise" and his own project, the self-titled Black Dub album. -[Variety]

Congrats to Neil Young, Arcade Fire, Caribou, Katy Perry ("Best International Album") and Daniel Lanois on their Juno wins.

Lanois will head back out on the road with his Black Dub project in May and June. The newly announced set of dates inclues a NYC show at Webster Hall on 6/15 with Rocco DeLuca. Tickets go on AmEx presale at noon on Wed (3/30) with regular sale hitting on Friday.

Plants and Animals

Canada's music heavyweights dominated the 2009 Juno Award nominations, with Nickelback garnering the most at five, followed by rocker Sam Roberts at four and Celine Dion and Hedley each picking up three.

But there were plenty of accolades for up and coming or independent acts, with nods for artists as diverse as The Stills, Crystal Castles, Plants and Animals and former Canadian Idol competitor Tara Oram. [CTV.CA]

As previously pointed out and proved again, Sam Roberts is huge in Canada, but not here where he just so happens to be playing Bowery Ballroom TONIGHT (2/18). Tickets (not surprisingly?) are still on sale.

As previously mentioned, Plants & Animals will share a bill with Blitzen Trapper and Alela Diane at Bowery and Music Hall of Williamsburg later this month (tix). From there the Canadian band goes on a March tour from DC to Michigan.
