P.S. Taylor Swift won nothing.
UPDATE: Kanye went on record saying that the Grammys and Beck should have given Beyonce that award
"Thanks...did you ever hear 'Midnight Vultures?"
Beck's had a pretty good Grammy night, his Morning Phase having first won Best Rock Album and then one of the biggest awards of the night, Album of the Year, beating out Sam Smith, Beyonce, Pharrell Williams and Ed Sheeran. On top of that, the award was given to him by Prince! As Beck started his acceptance speech, Kanye West jokingly headed toward the stage. "No, come back," Beck said. "I need help up here." Kanye later said that Beck should have given his award to Beyonce.
Morning Phase also won for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.
Meanwhile, though he didn't win "Album", Sam Smith took home "Best Pop Vocal Album", and "Record of The Year", "Song of The Year", and "Best New Artist".
Tom Petty didn't win a Grammy, but he did co-write the 'Song of The Year' (sort of).
Tenacious D won the metal Grammy for a Dio cover.
St. Vincent won "Best Alternative Music Album".

The NBA All Star Weekend happening in NYC next week is also meaning lots of crazy (and not always public) events for music fans in the city. We already mentioned that Win Butler, Common and others are playing a celebrity all-star game and Drake and Nas are playing Irving Plaza, and now we've learned another rapper, Kanye West, will be putting on a free performance in the city.
He's co-hosting it with OKC Thunder player (and Roc Nation Sports signee) Kevin Durant on February 12 outside of Madison Square Park at 6 PM. The only way to get in, though, is to win tickets. You can enter via co-presenters Roc Nation or Power 105.1 FM's contests or follow both on Twitter. As HipHopWired points out, you can also text "BOLDMOVE" to 95577 to win tickets from presenting partner Sparkling ICE.
That same week is Fashion Week in NYC, and Kanye will be doing something for that too. Fashionista reports that he's planning to present his upcoming Adidas collaboration in NYC that week:
West has repeatedly stated that Adidas has put trust in his talents and has given him the creative freedom he needs to truly shine -- take that, Nike -- which is why we were pretty excited when rumors started spreading around the Internet that he would be unveiling his collection for the sportswear brand with a presentation at New York Fashion Week. According to Complex, invitations to the event (which will reportedly take place on Feb. 12) have already been sent out, and the site referenced a (now-removed) Instagram screenshot of an e-mail sent to menswear buyer Ramon Ehlen as proof.Sooner than that, he'll be in LA to perform at the Grammys with Paul McCartney and Rihanna. He's also launched a mysterious website with a countdown clock (six days and counting as of this posting, we'll see).
You probably know by now that Kanye West and Paul McCartney have teamed up not only once but twice this year, most recently for the Rihanna collaboration, "FourFiveSeconds" (also featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Dirty Projectors frontman Dave Longstreth). They've now given that song a video, directed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, and you can check it out below.
It's also been announced that Paul, Kanye and Rihanna will all perform together at the Grammy Awards Ceremony this Sunday. Other performers include Madonna, AC/DC, John Legend & Common, Lady Gaga & Tony Bennett, Gwen Stefani & Adam Levine, Pharrell, Usher, maybe Beyonce and definitely not Taylor Swift.
Kanye and Paul will also be on SNL 40 the following Sunday. "FourFiveSeconds" video below...
As mentioned, Saturday Night Live will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a three-hour live special on February 15 (which is Sunday, by the way). Former castmember Eddie Murphy, who hasn't appeared on the show (which he doesn't have especially fond memories of) since 1984, will return for the special which also features a cavalcade of other past castmembers: Chevy Chase, Jimmy Fallon, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Martin Short, Tina Fey, Molly Shannon, Mike Myers, Andy Samberg, Bill Murray, Amy Poehler, Dana Carvey, Kristen Wiig, Dan Aykroyd, Chris Rock, Garrett Morris, and Maya Rudolph.
There will aslo be lots of former SNL hosts as well, including Five Timers Club members Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin, Paul Simon, Justin Timberlake, Christopher Walken, and Steve Martin, plus Emma Stone, John Hamm, Derek Jeter, Melissa McCarthy, Jerry Seinfeld, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Jim Carrey, Peyton Manning, Betty White and many more yet to be announced.
In addition to Timberlake and Simon, other musicians appearing on SNL 40 will be Kanye West, Paul McCartney, and Taylor Swift. The Saturday Night Live Special runs from 8 - 11 PM on 2/15. You can watch a couple of promos for the special below.
And in related news, Eddie Murphy, who has dabbled in music in the past, having scored a hit in 1985 with the Rick James-produced "Party All the Time," recently released a reggae single "Oh Jah" which you can stream below. It's not his first dip into the genre -- he released a single with Snoop Lion in 2013 and collaborated with Shabba Ranks in 1993.
This past week's SNL featured D'Angelo.

As always, there's been some notable news in the hip hop community lately -- like the new N.E.R.D. songs -- and now that the holidays are behind us, we're taking this chance to round up some of the stuff we've missed. Here's some of that news, plus a few upcoming NYC shows...
As you may have heard, on New Year's Day Kanye West and Paul McCartney released a collaborative track called "Only One," which a press release calls "the first publicly available recording from what has become a prolific musical collaboration between these two legendary artists" and is sung from the perspective of Kanye's late mother. The idea of Yeezus and Sir Paul on a track together may seem more like it'd happen for the novelty of that collaboration than because they work really well together, but if you haven't listened you should check this song out. It's very good.
Onetime Kanye tour DJ A-Trak (who thinks, despite what you say, that 2014 was one of the best years for rap) reunited Dipset members Cam'ron and Juelz Santana on the single "Dipshits" in 2014, which was followed by a full Dipset set at Wu-Tang's Barclays Center show. Now, the group of Cam'ron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana and Freekey Zekey are preparing to continue that reunion with a mixtape and a five-stop US tour this year. The plans were revealed by Funkmaster Flex on Instagram (via FACT). No tour dates announced yet, but stay tuned.
Cam'ron's sorta-recent Fool's Gold Day Off showmate Danny Brown is also up to something, it's non-musical though. He told Australian radio station Triple J (via FACT) that he's working on a Dr. Seuss-inspird children's book:
"It's really about self-esteem in black girls, I guess", says Brown. "You know how black women do so much - process their hair, change their eye colour - it's really about a little girl who does all these things to herself and changes herself and she realises she's just better off the way she is."That should be interesting. In less positive news, Danny's fellow "1 Train" rapper Joey Bada$$ was charged with assault after allegedly punching a security guard at Australian music festival Falls Festival, Australian Broadcasting Corporation reports. The guard allegedly told police he thought Joey was an unauthorized person. After the incident went down, the guard was treated for a broken nose and other facial injuries, and Joey was arrested after the show. Pitchfork points out a representative for Joey offered an official statement reading "There was a misunderstanding with security at the Byron Falls Festival show, which resulted in charges being laid by NSW Police. After fully cooperating with Police, Joey was granted bail and entered a plea of not guilty to the charge."
Brown started writing the book for his daughter, and claims that he "wants it to be real Dr. Seuss-y. The Grinch, Green Eggs And Ham, and One Fish, Two Fish - what was going on in that guy's brain to be able to write those things? I think I AM Dr. Seuss! I'm The Grinch, I'm all his characters come to life in rap music."
Death Grips before they "broke up" (more by Wei Shi)
In rap news that is just kind of weird, Death Grips, who are supposedly broken up, released a new instrumental album called Fashion Week that you can download for free. They also announced that their double album, The Powers That B, will actually come out as a physical release on February 10 via Harvest Records.
Now for some upcoming shows. Father, who we mentioned is opening for Theophilus London on February 16 at Bowery Ballroom (tickets), is also playing his own show on January 22 at Baby's All Right with special guests. Tickets are on sale now. His album, Young Hot Ebony, made Stereogum's 40 Best Rap Albums of 2014 list, it features iLoveMakonnen and others, and can be streamed below.
Two days earlier than that is the next 'Hot 97 Who's Next' show at SOB's (1/20) with a lineup of NJ rappers Kazzie, Dougie F., Fetty Wap and KC Bandz. Tickets are on sale now. Dougie F put out the single "Back Up On It" on Mad Decent not long ago. You can watch the video for that, with a Fetty Wap video, below.
For something more classic, Brooklyn vets Smif-n-Wessun are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their 1995 debut, Dah Shinin', on January 14 at SOB's. Tickets are on sale.
One last thing, while Run the Jewels (El-P + Killer Mike) was by far the consensus hip hop favorite of 2014 (and many critics' favorite of any genre), with duo Freddie Gibbs & Madlib trailing not far behind, it was the duo of Royce da 5'9" and DJ Premier, aka PRyme, who topped HipHopDX's list. As discussed, PRhyme's tour hits NYC on February 22 at Highline Ballroom. Tickets for that show are still available.
Streams and videos below...
You may have heard that demos of a new Madonna album leaked this week, and that she responded by saying she was "artistically raped" by hackers. Well now the Queen of Pop has officially announced her new album, which is called Rebel Heart and will be out on March 10 via Interscope.
She's also made six of the tracks available right now, including one called "Bitch I'm Madonna" featuring Nicki Minaj (!), and some of those tracks were produced by Kanye West and Diplo, according to Billboard. The album also may feature production from Blood Diamonds, SOPHIE, and not Ariel Pink.
You can purchase those six tracks via iTunes and stream them via Spotify below...

As always, NYC has a good amount of upcoming local hip hop shows and tours passing through. Here's a rundown of some of the cool stuff coming up...
NYC kush lover Smoke DZA has a hometown show happening January 25 at The Studio at Webster Hall with support from Manolo Rose, Tray Pizzy, JY, Dave East, Big Bz and Sha Hef. TIckets are on sale now. DZA's latest album was a collaboration with his group R.F.C. (Al-Doe, Bluntsmoker, NYMLo, and 183rd) called The Outsiders, which came out in late November. It features guests spots from A$AP Rocky, Cam'ron, Styles P, Chevy Woods, Dame Dash and Dom Kennedy, and production from Jahlil Beats, Ski Beatz, Lee Bannon and others. Stream it in full below.
The legendary Rakim squeezes in one more NYC show of 2014 before the year ends on December 27 at BB King's. It's a Christmas show presented by Funk Flex, and also featuring Special Ed, B Fats, Sponnie G and DJs Kool DJ Red Alert and DJ Chuck Chillout. Tickets are on sale now.
There's no lack of hip hop holiday celebrations in NYC between that Rakim show, the Run DMC Christmas show at Barclays Center on Friday (12/19) (tickets), the Le1f Kwanzaa show at SOB's on 12/28 (tickets), the Mykki Blanco show at Baby's All Right on New Year's Eve (tickets), and A$AP Ferg's opening set at the Skrillex/Diplo show at MSG on New Year's Eve (tickets).
Theophilus London recently released the new album, Vibes, which was executive produced by Kanye West, and also featured vocals from 'Ye, Blood Orange, Soko and more. He's now announced a tour in support of it for 2015 which hits NYC on February 16 at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets for that show go on sale at noon on Friday (12/19). List of dates and a stream of the track with Blood Orange below.
Theophilus's NYC show is with trippy R&B singer Doja Cat and Atlanta rapper Father, who just performed on stage with Tyler, the Creator, whose tour hits NJ on 12/20 at Starland Ballroom (tickets) and NYC on 12/21 at Terminal 5 (sold out).
Iggy Azalea, who was playing SOB's only two years ago and will soon likely be dominating the Grammys (for better or for worse), is making the step up to Barclays Center (5/7) on her next tour. That tour is with Nick Jonas, who appears to being trying to reinvent himself as an R&B singer, and Tinashe, who's a much more promising R&B singer and played her own NYC show at Highline Ballroom earlier this week. (Anyone catch that?) Tickets for the Barclays Center show go on sale at 9 AM on Friday (12/19). All dates are listed below.
Chicago rapper Lil Durk recently dropped the single "B.O.N." (streaming below), and has plans to tour in 2015 including a NYC show on February 24 at Gramercy Theatre with Villain$ and The Rapper: H. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
YG's tour with Nipsey Hussle was supposed to hit Best Buy Theater in November, but it was rescheduled for January 9. Tickets are still available, and any purchased for the November show will be honored.
To digress from live shows for a second, December is once again a time for last-minute hip hop releases. In addition to the looong-awaited D'Angelo album, Nicki Minaj's The Pinkprint and J. Cole's 2014 Forest Hills Drive, there's the new Kevin Gates mixtape, Luca Brasi 2, the sequel to his excellent 2013 mixtape, The Luca Brasi Story. Like that mixtape (and Stranger than Fiction and By Any Means, which have come out since), it's got Kevin seamlessly moving back and forth between melodic singing and aggressive rap. Kevin's prolific output can be a little intimidating to approach, but some of his best songs so far -- "Perfect Imperfection" and "Sit Down" are two early standouts -- are on here. Download the tape for free at DatPiff and stream it below.
The lists of Theophilus and Iggy/Tinashe dates, and the Theophilus/Blood Orange, Lil Durk and Smoke DZA song streams, also below...

Bruce at Hersheypark Stadium in May (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Yesterday's A-Trak show isn't the only NYC show happening in honor of World Aids Day. Tonight (12/1) there will be a show in Times Square with three of the four members of U2, minus Bono due to his recent injuries. In his place, Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay's Chris Martin will be fronting the band. Also performing their own sets are Kanye West and Carrie Underwood. Bono's organization (RED) is presenting the show.
It takes place at Duffy Square (on Broadway between 46th and 47th) at 7:30, and if you can't make it (or just don't want to deal with Times Square crowds), you can also stream it live HERE.
In related news, this Friday (12/5) PBS will air a Bruce Springsteen tribute at 9 PM EST which features footage of Neil Young, Elton John, Jim James, Mumford & Sons, Mavis Staples, Patti Smith, Alabama Shakes and others covering The Boss at the 2013 MusiCares Person of the year benefit. There also may or may not be a Bruce biopic on the way starring Brad Pitt.
And in more related news, there's a new fan-made video of footage from Kanye's Yeezus tour (made by John Colandra) which you can watch below...
Made In America 2014 Philly (via Stephanie Pratt)
It would have been ironic if Kings of Leon didn't get to headline Made in America fest in Philly over Labor Day weekend. They cancelled a bunch of dates leading up the fest due to injury, but promised to be better in time for the Philadelphia show. Luckily (for Kings of Leon fans), they did get to play, despite the fest almost pulling an Electric Zoo and shutting down due to rain on Sunday.
Made in America kicked everyone out around 6:30pm on Sunday, but were letting everyone back in an hour later. Spoon, Girl Talk, Pharrell, Gareth Emory, Tiesto, and Kings of Leon all still got to play, though with slightly different set times than originally planned.
Did you go to Made In America Philly (or LA) this year? How was it?
Watch a video of Kanye's full set from the first day of the festival, below...
What's those sneakers, Margiela? Yes they are, and they're also pony hair. Maison Martin Margiela, the designer Kanye West loves to namedrop, designed him a sneaker for his Yeezus tour and now you can own a pair too. If you're into like, wearing things made of pony hair, that is. It's available at Tres Bien and it's only $975 which is a steal especially when you consider the dust bag is included.
Maybe don't let Kanye near that pony North West asked for for Christmas this year. Oh, and no word on whether Kanye's puppy skin gloves will get a public release too.
Kanye made two of the top 10 albums of the decade so far, says Pitchfork.
by Andrew Sacher
Yesterday, Pitchfork posted their top 200 tracks of the decade so far, and today they've listed the top 100 albums to have come out between 2010-2014. There's some surprises on there. For example, I didn't expect to see Bon Iver's self-titled, their #1 album of 2011 and with a score of 9.5, rank as low as #27 on this list. I was also surprised to see Chief Keef make it but not, say, Shabazz Palaces or Schoolboy Q. And there's a few other glaring omissions: nothing by The National? Grizzly Bear? One thing that will surprise no one though, is their #1 pick.
You can check out the full list below...
It's not just you: Over the last five years, there's been a seismic shift in the way we engage with music. We tweet, tumbl, stream, and share our favorite songs; we scour dead links and navigate obtrusive pop-ups for the newest mixtapes; we watch our music videos on Youtube and Vevo. We watched the explosion of EDM, the birth of drill, the rise and fall of chillwave. We debated how to pronounce FKA twigs, whether the album was dead, and where Bobby Shmurda's hat went. We met Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean, Grimes, Jessie Ware, Disclosure, Miguel, and Charli XCX. We saw LCD Soundsystem break up, Neutral Milk Hotel reunite, and My Bloody Valentine release a new album--a shooting star if there ever was one. [Pitchfork]By the end of this year it will be halfway through the current decade, and to mark that, Pitchfork is posting lists of the best tracks, albums, and videos of the decade so far, this week. Today, they put out their list of the top 200 tracks. Like most of Pitchfork's 'top tracks' lists, it ranges from big names to underdogs in indie, electronic, hip hop and more, plus a few huge radio-pop songs sprinkled in. Can you guess what made #1?
Check out the full list HERE and browse the top 20, below...
Ranger Dave / Phosphorescent & Mikal Cronin at Soundwave / Arctic Monkeys
There was a mellow beginning and a repeatedly "Bloody" end to the first day of the lucky seventh edition of Outside Lands, the festival so beloved by San Francisco's Golden Gate Park that organizers Another Planet have a contract to host it there until at least 2021. Don't worry, though, it wasn't real blood -- just an attempt by Kanye West to extract some from the crowd by playing his current favorite song by himself over and over.Day one of Outside Lands in San Francisco kicked off a loaded weekend of music in Golden Gate Park. Friday featured sets from Kanye West (who played 'Blood On the Leaves' three times), Arctic Monkeys, Disclosure, Tegan and Sara, Holy Ghost!, Run the Jewels, Phosphorescent, Mikal Cronin and plenty more. Like Kim Kardashian, BV was on hand, and we've got day one pics in this post, artists that joined us in the Toyota Soundwave tent included.
...8:49 PM: Yeezus is in control now, and he stops the song "Power" dead in its tracks. "I like that song and all," he notes, taking off his couture face mask, "but I want to play a little of the last song now." He instructs the crowd to make "circles" so people can mosh when the beat to "Blood On The Leaves" drops. "This ain't no radio shit," he says. "This ain't no concierge, maitre d' music, trying to sound as smooth as possible." [Billboard]
UPDATE: Day 2 pics HERE. Day 3 coming soon. More of day 1 below...
"There was a certain amount of science to it. An entire week of work experience students left the office thinking that cutting-edge music journalism in 2014 mostly involves calculating which bands have been mentioned most in NME in the past two years, then hunting out references to the bands that influenced those acts online and finally adding up the number of times each influence came up. This gave us a rough list which our editorial team - heads swimming with all of the bands that Wolf Alice (or whoever) have raved on about over 4am ciders - then took to the pub, tore into shreds, fought and shouted about and finally reconstructed in the rundown of 100 you see in the mag today. The Beatles didn't make it. Sorry." [NME[NME went ahead and listed who they think the 100 most influential musicians and bands are (their latest cover story). Radiohead topped the list. Read the rest with justifications at NME, or just look at their full list below...

Outkast @ Firefly Fest 2014
We went to the music festival that happened in Delaware over the weekend, and not surprisingly, Outkast was one of the headliners. Pictures from their set are in this post.
Yesterday, Las Vegas music festival Life is Beautiful announced their October 2014 lineup, and not surprisingly, Outkast are one of the headliners.
Check out the full Las Vegas lineup along with more details pictures from Firefly Fest, below...
Dave Chappelle & Kanye last night (via Def Jam Twitter)
Dave Chappelle is in the midst of his 10-night run at Radio City. Some, like Wednesday's (6/18), Thursday's (6/19) and last night's (6/20), were billed as just Dave, while others, like this Tuesday (6/24) through Thursday (6/26) are to feature musical guests including The Roots, Janelle Monae, Erykah Badu and more. However, last night a surprise musical guest did come out: Kanye West (who Chappelle has told stories about before). You can watch videos of Kanye coming out last night for "New Slaves," "Jesus Walks" and "Gold Digger," via Consequence of Sound, below.
The run continues through Friday, June 27. Most shows are sold out but you can still get tickets to a few of them.
As previously mentioned, Jay Z is throwing his Budweiser Made In America Festival in Philly and LA this year, simultaneously on August 30-31. Cole, Girl Talk, Spoon, Chromeo, Grimes, De La Soul, Baauer, Danny Brown, YG, Holy Ghost and more. Full lineup below.

Evian Christ at Pitchfork Fest 2013 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Dark UK producer/Yeezus contributor Evian Christ has played North America more than once, but he's now announced what's being billed as his first proper tour here. It kicks off in late May and continues through June, including NXNE and a NYC show on his run with Dutch E Germ (who's also sort of a Yeezus contributor) happening on June 25 at Output. Tickets for that show are not on sale yet, but should be soon via Ticketfly. All dates are listed below.
Evian recently said he'll be continuing his Kanye West collabs and contributing to Ye's next album as well. Meanwhile, he released his own EP, Waterfall, this past March via Tri Angle, and it's not too dissimilar from the beats on Yeezus. Stream two of its tracks, with the list of dates, below.

David Lynch @ BAM 4/29/2014
I love smoke. I love fire. I love metal. I love glass. I love plaster. I love bricks. And I love nature going to work on those things. In the old days, in the 1800s, they started building the most beautiful factories that were like cathedrals. I've visited many of these factories and photographed them. For me, it's like walking into a dream - a dream of textures, shapes and mood.... The factories, more often than not, today are very boring. - David Lynch @ BAM [via Rolling Stone]It probably goes without saying that David Lynch is a fascinating guy. Having made some of the weirdest, most indelible cinematic images of the last 40 years, the director (and musician/cartoonist/meditation enthusiast) is a true iconoclast. Last night (4/29) at BAM was a rare opportunity to hear him speak in public, where he was in conversation with New York Public Library's Paul Holdengräber.
The freewheeling gabfest touched on NYC (he's overcoming a fear of the subway that dates back to the '50s), his love of cardboard, diners and other subjects. He also talked quite a bit about music, sharing his love of Jimi Hendrix, and Kanye West's "Blood on the Leaves" ("so minimal, so powerful but at the same time so beautiful"). He also gave a shout out to composer and frequent collaborator Angelo Badalamenti who was in the audience.
For more on Lynch's appearance at BAM last night, Rolling Stone has a full report. More pictures from David Lynch @ BAM below..
Protests are underway after Bishop Ford students found out on Monday that the 50+ year old Catholic high school on 19th Street in Windsor Terrace was being shut down due to low enrollment and no money. If you'd like to help try and save it, there's a petition.
You may have never heard of Bishop Ford but you may have heard about their breakdancing teacher and might recognize the school via its iconic radio tower south of Park Slope near GreenWood Cemetery and the Prospect Expressway. You might also recognize some of its interior via vidoes by R.E.M. (directed by Michael Moore), Drake (directed by Kanye West), and Mike WiLL (starring Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa and Juicy J). Watch the (not-very-Catholic) videos filmed at Bishop Ford, below...
Outside Lands Festival returns to San Francisco's Golden Gate Park from August 8 - 10. This year's lineup was just announced and includes Kanye West, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Arctic Monkeys, Death Cab for Cutie, Disclosure, The Flaming Lips, Spoon, Haim, Lykke Li, and more.
Tickets go on sale Thursday (4/10) at 10 AM PDT. Full lineup below...
French artist David Redon has taken on a new project, "Ads Libitum," where he takes vintage American ads and posters, but applies themes of modern pop culture (mostly music), as Animal New York points out. The project included takes on Kanye West (above), Nirvana, Outkast, Daft Punk, Drake, Beyonce, Jay Z, Breaking Bad, The Beach Boys and more.
This comes not longer after we saw rappers painted as royalty portraits.
