Kanye prepares to meet the recently
carbonite-d Han Solo in Cloud City (more by Bao Nguyen)
Jay-Z & Kanye West have expanded their previously discussed (and rescheduled) tour together to include shows in LA, Chicago, Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, and Madison Square Garden! MSG goes down on November 7th and 8th, with the previous two nights dedicated to shows at Izod Center in East Rutherford, NJ (11/5 & 11/6). Ticketing info for MSG is still forthcoming, but Citibank card members can purchase presale tickets on 10/19 at 10AM.
All updated dates and the video for "Otis" is below.
Hopefully you acted quick yesterday because Frank Ocean's Bowery Ballroom show is now sold out. The show, one of six now-announced, popped up so quickly that Frank himself didn't even know it was happening, as he explains in a video he has posted to his Tumblr.
As pointed out in the comments, the date of the NYC show (11/6) happens on the second night of Kanye West & Jay-Z's two-night run at Izod Center in NJ. It's impossible for Frank to be two places at once, but it makes sense that maybe he'll play with them on 11/5 at least, since he appears on their new album.

"Light sprinkles ushered in the first day of the tenth annual Austin City Limits Music (ACL) Festival, but it was a welcome reprieve from the humid heat that has been plaguing the area and the state. Music and festival fans came in droves to see their favorite ACL artists, and rumors swirled throughout the day as to who the main headliner of the evening, Kanye West, would share the stage with..." [Pegasus News]Kanye, who was playing opposite Coldplay on Friday night, didn't share the stage with anyone except his dancers. Those who have seen or read about any of Kanye's recent shows know what his set at ACL looked like, complete with multiple acts, ballerinas and big backdrops.
Austin City Limits continues today, Saturday (9/17). You can stream it online. More pictures from Friday below...
One look at this weekend's Rock The Bells lineup and you could debate whether any of those MCs would be anywhere without the rhymes of the smooth operator Big Daddy Kane. The juice crew affiliate plays BB Kings on Sept 19th for those of you looking to get "R-A-W". The venue says the show is with a live band with opening sets by Lethillweapon and Prophet. Tickets are on sale.
Kane is currently working on a new album, though details remain scarce.
In related news, Pusha T's new EP Fear Of God 2: Let Us Pray is coming out September 27th on Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music. Its nine tracks will feature guest appearances by Diddy, Kanye, Young Jeezy, 50 Cent, Rick Ross, Tyler the Creator and more. Meanwhile Pusha T told the Village Voice he's working on a new mixtape called Long Live The Caine, an obvious ode to both the white powder and the great Brooklyn MC. Keep a look out for that. Check out the new video for "Feeling Myself", off the upcoming EP and featuring R&B singer Kevin Cossom, below...

Tyler's mom & Wavves @ the Video Music Awards (via Hipster Runoff)
"there are great moments in awards shows. bruno mars sounded really good doing 'valerie' for amy winehouse. i don't think anyone is bummed that adele is killing everything. her voice was real and focused when i went thru and watched highlights from tonight. kanye and jay z are always murdering. beyonce is pregnant. yes this is awesome as shit, culturally speaking. but can i just ask, the reader, us, we ... as non-rhetorically as possible: don't we seem dumb? didn't MTV lose the fight against themselves? Didn't Rock'n'Roll STOP? Why are the lights so bright? isn't our talent as artists enough? Why do we try SO hard? Does a moonman mean what it did back then? Should we feel pumped when we get one? Should our mom's cry? I am not even thinking about it that hard. I will close my eyes in 90 seconds and have total peace... But, seriously. Why are we waving around so much? Why do we NEED this shit so bad? Why don't we just have MUSIC? DO music? soul? I don't know. I don't mean to criticize. Anyone. Actually. Except for MTV. You might have had a very large opportunity to be stabilize your self as a global presence of culture and art about 15 years ago and you fucked the dog. Sorry. Im with my girls on this one. Its becoming increasingly clear as I think about it more and more, that the dollars, if they ARE apart of why you are doing something... they are apart of why you are doing something. that's fucked to me. that's the absence of spirit, glue, fabric of what makes us a person. it distracts us from what we could be doing: WORK. on EARTH. Better say this: Forget what I say. If you even read this, you'll probably say to yourself, who is this ass saying shit? It doesn't matter what i say. it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter. But this one last thought: What would Bill Hicks say?"If you missed the show, or didn't read about it already, Odd Future's Tyler, The Creator won Best New Artist, Adele (as Justin points out) is a good singer, (so is) Beyonce (but more impotantly, she) is pregnant, Lady Gaga does a great Ralph Macchio, and Justin Bieber loves God and Jesus....
Kanye West in Sweden
I caught Kanye West's 2+ hour headlining set at the Way Out West Festival in Gothenburg, Sweden on Saturday night, one night after I saw Prince play a 2+ hour set on the same stage, surprise cameo by Kanye included (Prince did not return the favor).
Without comparing setlists, as far as I could tell from memory, Kanye's set in Sweden was the basically the same set he did at Coachella minus Justin Vernon on guest vocals. Everything else was similar - the show starting with Kanye on a ladder in the middle of the crowd, the backdrop, the ballet dancers, the white sheet that covers them towards the end, the costume changes, and even a short appearance by Pusha T during "Runaway" (seriously though, Pusha T went all the way to Sweden for 20 seconds on stage?). Pictures from the epic production are in this post.
Jay Z & Kanye West have added new dates to their upcoming tour in support of the recently released Watch the Throne. The previously announced dates include November 5 and 6 at Izod Center which are now sold out. The new announcement includes another NYC area date (sort of) on November 11 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ. Tickets go on sale Friday (8/19) at 10 AM with a Watch the Throne and VIP presale starting Wednesday (8/17) at 10 AM.
Updated Throne dates, more pictures from Sweden, and the video for "Otis" below...
by Andrew Sacher
Although Kanye produced most of the album, they also brought an impressive cast of outside producers incuding Q-Tip, 88-Keys, The Neptunes, The RZA, and Swizz Beatz. Kanye and his collaborators create a wide range of sounds touching on everything from classic soul to dubstep-infused electronica. The guest vocal spots are especially grabbing too. Jay-Z and Kanye, who have been two of the biggest names in hip hop for at least the last decade, bring in newcomer Frank Ocean of Odd Future on two of the tracks. Jay's wife, Beyonce, who also has Frank Ocean and Kanye on her new album, sings the chorus to "Lift Off." The album samples the vocals of legendary singers Otis Redding and Curtis Mayfield, and also features guest vocals by Mr. Hudson of Kanye's G.O.O.D. Music. You can stream "Otis" at Jay-Z's Life + Times website and listen to "H.A.M" below.
Justin Vernon also wrote a hook for "That's My Bitch" and according to the album's liner notes, he also sings the part. Elly Jackson of La Roux sings the song's chorus and Q-Tip handled some production duties. Check the song out on grooveshark. Justin comes in at 1:45.
Speaking of Justin Vernon, he and his 9-piece version of Bon Iver played their first of two NYC shows with The Rosebuds at United Palace Theatre last night (8/9). They also play Prospect Park tonight (8/10). Both shows are/were sold out. More on last night in a bit.
Jay-Z & Kanye have two upcoming sold out shows at Izod Center and other dates too.
'Watch the Throne' tracklist and video below...
The Throne (aka Jay-Z & Kanye West) have rescheduled their original set of dates to kick off in late October. The current schedule is listed below and "more dates to be announced soon". The new set of dates include NJ's Izod Center on November 5th & 6th (instead of September 27 & 28). Tickets for both dates go on presale at 10AM with the password "WTT".
Meanwhile, much like the Jay-Z/R.Kelly tour there are reports that the partnership isn't going so swimmingly...
A battle royal has broken out behind the scenes of Jay-Z and Kanye West's new album, "Watch the Throne."Jay-Z denies the beef and said Kanye is a genius. Jay & Ye hosted a private listening party at The Rose Planetarium in Central Park last night (8/1). According to attendee Erin Carlson, "Contrary to reports, they seemed to be getting along...." Contrary to rumors before the event, they did not perform. "Watch the Throne" is out August 8th via iTunes.
Sources say the rappers -- who call themselves The Throne and are releasing their expected blockbuster collaboration Aug. 8 on iTunes and four days later everywhere else -- are barely speaking to each other as they iron out the details of their upcoming tour...
The sources say West wants flashy concerts with "next-level production," which would cost more than $400,000 per show. Jay-Z is said to be meticulous about costs and already has a larger, long-term advance from Live Nation that he has to pay back.
"Jay-Z can't deal with Kanye," an insider told Page Six. "Jay is a stone-cold businessman. He wants to recoup all of his money from Live Nation. But Kanye wants to upstage rock stars with a blowout show. He doesn't care about costs. He has a lot less to gain from the shows."
West is expected to agree to the conditions of the tour next week, but the business brouhaha between the powerhouse artists might have affected their backstage relationship.
Industry insiders were shocked to see West and Jay-Z perform separately with Young Jeezy last Monday night at the Highline Ballroom [a private event]. "We were expecting them to come out together to perform a track from the album," a source said. "They didn't even go out together after the show."
"Jay-Z is fed up with West's antics," another source said. "He doesn't even want to be around him." However, the two are expected to perform together at a listening party tonight at The Rose Planetarium in Central Park, according to The Post's Dan Aquilante. A Live Nation rep said, "No comment." The rappers' reps didn't get back to us.-[New York Post]
Videos from that private Young Jeezy show at Highline Ballroom last week (7/25), which featured appearances from Bun B, The Lox, Fabolous and others in addition to Jay/Kanye, are below alongside all tour dates.
Jay & Ye wait to receive the large bundles of money about to be thrown at them
Tickets for the previously discussed Jay-Z/Kanye West aka Watch The Throne (isn't throne a synonym for toilet?) show scheduled for September 27 & 28 at IZOD Center go on presale on Thurs 7/28 at 10:00 AM. Presale code is "WTT" for the NJ dates (probably for all of them). You can head to the WTT website for details on all cities starting at midnight tonight (7/27). General sale tickets, ranging from $55 to $178.50, hit Ticketmaster on August 8 at 10am. - BBG
Kanye West at Brooklyn Hip Hop Fest 2011 (more by Brook Bobbins)
Jay-Z and Kanye West will proclaim that all sucka MCs need to Watch The Throne, when the pair release their collaborative LP on August 8th. Stream the first track "Otis" at Jay-Z's blog. The LP marks Jay-Z's third attempt at merging with a major star to form another supercrew. He released an EP with Linkin Park and two LPs as part of "The Best of Both Worlds", his collaboration with R.Kelly that in addition to the LPs, produced a much discussed, failed tour.
In addition, and much like The Best of Both Worlds, Jigga and Ye will hit the road together for a string of US dates kicking off in late Septemeber and coming to a close in November. The tour includes a pair of dates at Izod Center in East Rutherford on 9/27 and 9/28. Ticketing info is forthcoming, but presale passwords are set to be revealed on Thursday at midnight.
Check out the album art and tracklisting (two songs with Odd Future associate Frank Ocean included), alongside all tour dates, below...

Ali-Shaheed Mohammed will return to the tables this weekend at Dekalb Market after spinning at Brooklyn Hip Hop Fest last weekend, along with (former?) bandmate Q-Tip and tons of suprise guests (like Busta Rhymes & Kanye West). You saw the videos. Here are the pics. More of them below...
Quincy Jones, Aloe Blacc, and Kanye West
The above photo comes from crooner/MC Aloe Blacc's site and a benefit show that featured the three. So far, no indication that the trio will form a mega-trio, although if possible it will have to wait until Aloe Blacc returns from his current tour in the EU. Aloe Blacc spent Saturday night (6/25) playing Glastonbury in the UK alongside names like Radiohead, Pulp, Beyonce, and countless notable others. Check video of his performance below.
Aloe Blacc will spend the bulk of July touring overseas before heading back to the US to prep for a new batch of East Coast dates in early September. Those dates include a return to Highline Ballroom on September 2nd. Tickets are on sale.
Kanye's GOOD Music just released Big Sean's LP Finally Famous this week. What do you think of Big Sean? As Pitchfork pointed out, Flying Lotus is not a fan ("This Big Sean album is not sweet. I dunno why I try to like this stuff. I want my time back! same wack ass post drake cadence, talking about the same shit i heard in the last rap album i bought(nothing).more autotune.more snare repeat"). Flylo does however like the new Shabazz Palaces.
Speaking of Flying Lotus and Aloe Blacc, they both performed with the Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Ensemble in LA in 2010. Pharoahe Monch performs with the Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Ensemble in NYC in July 2011.
All Aloe tour dates and some video is below.
Kanye West & Big Sean @ Irving Plaza Tuesday (Joshua Laboy)
Maybe it was all the excitement of summer finally arriving, but for whatever reason, NYC shows have been pretty heavy on the special guests lately. Here's a few we know about.
Reggie Watts was the secret guest that joined Glenn Kotche and Buke & Gass during 'Wilco weekend' at NYU for the Jab Abumrad's Radiolab Concert on Saturday (6/18). Reggie was a secret because of the two Summerstage shows he's playing this week including the one in Red Hook Park TONIGHT (6/24).
Reptar was a secret guest at the Thee Oh Sees Brooklyn Bowl show on Saturday (Reptar played Governors Ball earlier that day). And as predicted, Thee Oh Sees themselves were the secret headliner at Death by Audio the previous night (6/17).
Reptar, who also opened for Art Brut at Music Hall last night, will open for Foster the People at Terminal 5 on September 27th. The only mystery here is how Foster the People are big enough to headline Terminal 5 already! Tickets are on sale.
Ted Leo showed up as a special guest at the Eleanor Friedberger show at Europa during Northside. Bradford Cox was in the Audience. Catch Ted again at the free South Street Seaport kickoff party for the 4Knots Festival that Eleanor plays at the South Street Seaport a week later. It was just announced that Eleanor will also open for Deerhunter at their Webster Hall shows in August. (Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox must have really liked her set) Tickets for both Deerhunter shows are still available.
As also recently mentioned both Clams Casino and Neon Indian (DJ) were added as last minute surprises guests to the Northside show at Cameo on Sunday (6/19). The show was one day after Neon Indian played Governors Ball. Monday night Cameo hosted semi-secret DJ sets by YACHT, The Miracles Club & Midnight Magic, all who played MHOW on Sunday.
Kanye West showed up at Big Sean's Irving Plaza show on Tuesday (6/21), the same night Big Sean appeared on the Bon Iver episode of Fallon. Despite two of Kanye's friends being on Fallon on the same night however, Kanye did not make an appearance on the show (not even backstage). Videos from Irving Plaza below.
Justin Vernon did not show up at the S. Carey/David Bazan show at Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday (6/22), as we hoped he would. S. Carey is a member of Bon Iver's band and played with Justin the two days previous on both Fallon and Colbert.
Speaking of Fallon, Bob Mould (who DJs his Blowoff party at Highline Ballroom tonight) showed up and surprised people by playing a Sugar song backed by the Roots on the show. Mould recently performed live with the Foo Fighters during their set at Sasquatch. Video of that special guest appearance is below.
Lenny Kravtiz's daughter Zoë Kravitz and her band Elevator Fight played Southpaw with J*Davey on Tuesday (6/21). Lenny showed up to watch his daughter, but he wasn't the only crowd member blowing up Twitter. Drake was also in the audience to catch the show. FADER grabbed him outside the Park Slope venue for a quick video interview which you can watch below.
Flying Lotus & Just Blaze @ Music Hall (via the Comedian)
Flying Lotus headlined two Brainfeeder showcases (his label) this week. The first was at Bowery Ballroom on Monday (6/20) and the second at MHOW on Wednesday (6/22). Apparently trippy instrumentals aren't the only thing FlyLo digs when it comes to hip hop producers, because Just Blaze (Jay-Z, T.I.) showed up to play with him at the MHOW show. Flying Lotus also surprised NYC by playing a free late show at Le Poisson Rouge too.
Following in FlyLo's footsteps, Ivan & Alyosha gave NYC a gift in the form of a last-minute free late show at Mercury Lounge.
Crowded House frontman Neil Finn played with Eddie Vedder at Beacon Theatre on his tour with Glen Hansard.
And while opener Glen Hansard (Swell Season, the Frames) helped Vedder recreate "Sleepless Nights," the tender duet the pair shared on "Ukulele Songs," and the crowd found their voices and their feet for several of he night's tunes -- "Porch," "Unthought Known" -- the biggest roar erupted when Vedder invited Crowded House/Split Enz frontman Neil Finn to the stage for an impromptu collaboration Vedder jokingly called an "unrehearsed collision." With longtime friend Finn on organ, the twosome blended delicate harmonies on Hunters And Collectors' "Throw Your Arms Around Me." Finn took up a guitar and sat down next to Vedder to trade verses on Finn's Split Enz hit "I Got You," which found Finn playfully calling out chords to Vedder during the bridge. "It turns out we play that song differently," Vedder quipped, "But since he wrote it, he's right."Neil Finn plays his own show at Bowery Ballroom on 6/26. You can win two tickets on our Facebook.
Decked out in a trio of long white lab coats, Finn (organ) and Hansard (guitar) returned with Vedder for the second encore, the rousing "Big Hard Sun" from "Into The Wild." [Billboard]
As you know, Stephen Colbert was the special guest with The Black Belles on his own show last night (6/23). He performed with the band and also recorded a single with them which is now on sale via Third Man Records. Jack White actually also appeared on the show this time for his third and final appearance during StePhest Colbchella '011 and then appeared with Colbert again today (6/24) at The Lot at the High Line. Jack and the Black Belles were also spotted last night (6/23) bowling at Brooklyn Bowl. According to Questlove (who was DJing the venue), he "has bowling game."
Tonight (6/24) is the another Doveman show at LPR. Lisa Hannigan (who played 3 sold out NYC-area shows this week) and Mike Doughty are billed as openers, but according to Doveman, some secret special guests will be showing up as well (as usual).
Last but not least, as hinted, and confirmed earlier today, Fucked Up are the special guest at 285 Kent Saturday (6/26) with JEFF the Brotherhood and Iceage. Tickets are on sale at Record Grouch. Iceage also played a secret show at 538 Johnson while they were in town for Northside.
Any special appearances we left out?
"Kanye West was among those who paid respect to spoken word artist and "bluesologist" Gil Scott-Heron, who passed away at age 62 last week, at a memorial service in Harlem's Riverside Church Thursday (June 2).The viewing is Friday.
The service, which was open to the public, closed with West performing an Auto-Tuned yet emotional rendition of of "Lost In The World" -- the song from his latest album, "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," and one that samples the refrain, "Who will survive in America?" from Scott-Heron's well-known poem, "Comment #1."
In addition to West, a trio of Scott-Heron's longtime backing musicians gave a spirited performance of the artist's songs "Better Days Ahead" and "The Bottle," while the audience clapped along." [Billboard]
Kanye West at MoMa (more by Bao Nguyen)
"Heineken is giving fans in 8 select markets the chance to see a local G.O.O.D. Music performance as well as the grand prize of catching Kanye West in NYC on June 9th... If your city isn't listed, stay tuned for more chances, you aren't forgotten!"So far the listed cities are Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Miami, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and Washington DC, and you can enter the sweepstakes at the Heineken site. No word on who from the G.O.O.D. family will play the dates/join Mr. West on stage in NYC.
In related news, Cannes is happening and Kanye is there, as people couldn't help but notice: "Kanye West made a grand entrance in a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss sports coupe at the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Gala held during the Cannes Film Festival in Cap d'Antibes, France. Only 75 of the limited edition cars are in production with an estimated price tag of $1.7 million. Yeezy pulled up in the bad boy looking like James Bond in a tuxedo and shades as passersby gawked. Inside the black-tie event, he rubbed shoulders with Naomi Campbell and Boy George. He is headed to Morocco next, where he will headline the Festival Mawazine."
The 10th Anniversary ACL Festival line-up is on the books. Stevie Wonder, Arcade Fire, Kanye West, Coldplay, My Morning Jacket, Fleet Foxes, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Nas & Damian "Jr Gong" Marley and Cee Lo top the bill of the over 130 bands. Bright Eyes, Social Distortion, Empire of the Sun, Santigold, Pretty Lights, TV On The Radio, Skrillex, Big Boi and Randy Newman are also on tap to rock September 16-18.3-Day passes are sold out. 1-Day passes go on sale at 10am. Full lineup below...

Jay-Z & Kanye West on display @ the Museum of Modern Art
At the tail end of his set at MoMA's Party In The Garden benefit afterparty last night (5/10), Kanye West was joined by none-other than Jay-Z to work out "H.A.M." before West stepped away from center stage (shocking, I know) to make way for HOV and his rendition of "Empire State of Mind". It was a riotous closing to a set that allowed plenty of time for Mr. West to shine too. Kanye played 45 minutes of hits from across his output. The setlist included "Power," "Run This Town", "Hell of a Life", "Can't Tell Me Nothin'", "Runaway", "Flashing Lights" and "The Good Life". Pictures and video from the museum show are in this post.
Kanye West at Coachella (more by David Andrako)
Kanye West will play the annual Party in the Garden benefit after-party at MoMA on May 10th. Tickets are on sale with all proceeds going toward "the Museum's general operating fund, supporting our award-winning educational programs and the care, study, and exhibition of the collection." The cheapest ticket is $150. That gets you into the after-party with Kanye, but not entrance to the VIP lounge or to the dinner or cocktail party earlier in the night. Those tickets will cost you anywhere from $500 to $100,000 (for a table).

"While it was kind of a running joke that the gnarled dance-punk band was one of the biggest reunions at this year's Coachella (Death From Above 2005 jokes abounded), the band reasserted what made them such a strange and compelling commodity in the first place.Death From Above 1979's performance on Sunday was the second time the reunited band graced a public stage since announcing their return. The first was a semi-surprise appearance at this year's SXSW at March that got much more attention than anyone even anticipated due to a bit of violence that made the late night news. In May the band does it again at Sasquach.
Lacerating bass, Grainger's falsetto wails and a relentless rhythmic urgency both hearkened back to the mid-'00 dance punk craze, yet reminded the audience that their palpable violence set them apart from their more trend-minded peers.
"Romantic Rights" and "Blood on Our Hands" rode slithery, distortion-tangled bass lines over the kind of four-on-the-floor that bassist Jesse F. Keeler would explore more thoroughly in his disco aegis MSTRKRFT.The audience seemed simultaneously enthralled and a bit confused."
Coachella 2011 concluded on Sunday with a big headlining set by Kanye West. I already posted some pictures from that one, but a more proper set is also in this post which also includes our full set of pictures from the California festival's final day (day one pics HERE, day two HERE).
Bon Iver's Justin Vernon who played Friday night with Gayngs, made two guest appearances on Sunday, first with the National earlier in the day and then with Kanye West during one of the most high profile sets of the weekend.
The other big set of Sunday was by the Strokes who weren't afraid to play the hits. Their full setlist is below.
PJ Harvey (who arrives in NYC this week) played her headlining set on the "Outdoor Theatre." It overlapped with both The Strokes and Kanye...
"Backed by a nimble three piece band, Harvey, with the Strokes audible from the nearby main stage during the silences between songs, delivered the most emotionally intense performance I witnessed at this year's Coachella, singing songs of violence, war, love and lust (mostly from her harrowing new Let England Shake), before a crowd of rabid supporters...." [SPIN]a rabid supporter... (this pic not by David Andrako)...

Kanye makes his grand entrance (this photo by David Andrako)
There were dancers, costume changes, Bon Iver...
Kanye West closed out Coachella 2011 in the only way he knows how, in a grand fashion and dedicated to his mama. We'll have more pictures and recaps from Sunday later, but in the meantime, check out more of what Kanye brought to the Indio stage, and the 27 song setlist, below...

Super Bowl XLV (45): Dallas Cowboys vs...oh wait....The Green Bay Packers vs the Pittsburgh Steelers in Dallas' brand new, state of the art, big ass stadium. The Packers won, bringing the Lombardi Trophy back to small town America and less sales back to Wiz Khalifa. I wonder if Jerry Jones was faking all of those smiles? Enough of the sports talk. This feature is the return of the long lost "Week In Music Licensing" post.
The real winner tonight - Detroit. A town that has been down on its luck, due for something inspiring to happen. Well here you go. Laura R. Charron tweeted that "#Detroit area agrees that #Chrysler200 had THE BEST commercial." Decide for yourself:
"Yes, he sleeps on fur pillows, searches for marble conference tables on eBay, and has opinions about credenzas (whatever those are), but let no one say that in 2010, Kanye West's proletarian dreams weren't equally peculiar and rich. In a year of economic suffering and disastrous unemployment rates, West interrupted his own wealthy anomie to pen "All of the Lights," an incongruously star-stuffed song about a disoriented parolee trying to beat a restraining order and see his daughter, working out a brief reunion with her estranged mother: "Public visitation, we met at Borders." Shortly thereafter, the bookstore declared a real-life liquidity crisis and delayed payments to vendors, who in turn stopped sending the store books; bankruptcy proceedings may even now be pending." [Village Voice]Cee Lo Green won best single. Full results of this year's critics poll at the Village Voice.
