Tom Petty

Petty Fest is returning to NYC this year on October 24 at Webster Hall for "A Night To Celebrate Tom Petty." Many of the usual suspects are lined up for this one, like Nicole Atkins, Jesse Malin, Sammy James Jr. (of The Mooney Suzuki), and others. In addition to that, we've got some other interesting additions like Father John Misty, Devendra Banhart, Matt Sweeney (of Chavez, Zwan, and others), Caveman, and Har Mar Superstar, who played last year's Petty Fest, is returning as well. Tickets for the show go on sale Friday (9/28) at noon. All proceeds will benefit Sweet Relief Music Fund & The Musician's Cancer Fund.

Father John Misty will be bringing his tour with La SeraJeffertitti's Nile to NYC around the same time, hitting Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 23 and Bowery Ballroom the same day as Petty Fest (10/24). The Bowery Ballroom show is sold out but tickets for MHOW are still available.

Devendra Banhart will also be in NYC around that time to support Swans at Bowery Ballroom on October 28 and Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 29. Tickets for those two shows are still available. Swans also play Bowery Ballroom on October 10 with A Hawk and A Hacksaw, but that one's sold out. Devendra also recently said in an interview, "I finished a record. It's going to be put out by Nonesuch Records. And I didn't know that until today actually. It's kind of my dream label. So I'm really happy about that."

A video of Har Mar Superstar doing "Refugee" at last year's Petty Fest and this year's full lineup are below.

Fleetwood Mac

Stevie Nicks came to "CBS This Morning" yesterday (7/11) for an on-air interview, during which she revealed that Fleetwood Mac plan to reunite "next year, so far." "It's the plan. Because that's what we do. I do my thing. And Lindsey (Buckingham is) out doing his thing now." During that interview, Stevie also spoke about the recent suicide of Fleetwood Mac member Bob Welch, saying "I can't even tell you what in the world would have pushed him to do something that crazy."

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham are both currently on their own solo tours. Stevie hit the NYC area a few times in the past month, including Beacon Theater and she plays tonight (7/12) at Mohegan Sun in CT. Lindsey's tour is ongoing as well, and it hit NYC back in June for a show at BB King's.

As mentioned, there's also a Fleetwood Mac tribute in the works which comes on August 14 and features covers by mostly indie rock artists. Since we last wrote, many of those covers have surfaced on the internet. 10 of the 17 total covers are streaming below, including Lee Ranaldo Band and J Mascis' "Albatross," Antony's "Landslide," Billy Gibbons & Co.'s "Oh Well," Best Coast's "Rhiannon," The New Pornographers' "Think About Me," Lykke Li's "Silver Springs," Karen Elson (produced by Beck)'s "Gold Dust Woman," Matt Sweeney and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's "Storms," MGMT's "Future Games," and The Kills' "Dreams."

Those streams and lists of all Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham dates are below...

Karen -- Bonnaroo 2011

Jack -- Bonnaroo 2011

"Later at The Other Tent came a set from Nashville's most high-profile, willowy redhead supermodel-turned-songstress, Karen Elson. While orienting myself in the now-somewhat-spacious media area near the stage-right speaker stack, the crowd erupted in a brief fit. Why? What could it be? What did I miss? Oh, Elson's old man Jack White was visible side-stage for a fleeting moment. Between most of the attendees' visible Jack White boners and all the Third Man Records shirts present, I think it's safe to say a lot of TMR's built-in fan set was in attendance. And yes, Elson's band was made up of the expected cast of Third Man all-stars, among them Greenhornes/Raconteurs "Little" Jack Lawrence and the always-stellar Patrick Keeler. Elson's spooky, gauzy Americana tunes were strong and spacious enough to leave her players room to show off their chops, and her voice was stronger than I anticipated. Plus, "Stolen Roses" sounded like a bit of a nod to "Scarborough Fair."" [Nashville Scene]
That review, like the pictures in this post, refer to Karen Elson's Thursday night set at Bonnaroo 2011. One day later, aka today (6/10), Karen and Jack announced their divorce that they are celebrating in Nashville tonight. More pictures from her Bonnaroo set below...

To whom it may concern:

karen elson and jack white announce today that they are getting divorced.

"we remain dear and trusted friends and co-parents to our wonderful children Scarlett and Henry Lee.
We feel so fortunate for the time we have shared and the time we will continue to spend both separately and together watching our children grow. In honor of that time shared, we are throwing a divorce party. an evening together in Nashville to re-affirm our friendship and celebrate the past and future with close friends and family."

with love
Karen Elson and Jack White
Hmmm. The party flyer (with the location smudged out) which came with the press release announcing their divorce is below.

Karen Elson just released a Lou Reed cover via iTunes and played Bonnaroo last night.

Bonnaroo (June 9-12 in Manchester Tennessee) has announced the 2011 lineup (slightly early), and like the rumored Lollapalooza lineup, Eminem is among the headliners. Bonnaroo also has Grammy winners Arcade Fire and the Black Keys, in addition to Lil Wayne, Mumford & Sons, the Strokes, The Decemberists, Florence & the Machine, Girl Talk, Beirut (haven't seen them in a while), and many more. Full list below...

Punch Brothers

"I was fortunate to catch The Punch Brothers at the Bowery Ballroom on Saturday night. I think I've seen them perform a good six times in the last year and a half? Honestly, I've lost count, because I've probably seen Chris Thile (who is part of the band) just as many. I consider it such a privilege to live in a city that not only breeds and encourages new talent but also offers up many an opportunity to see the music I love. I could (and have) gone on about this band before, but each concert I attend is different and amazing. The Secret Sisters opened and Karen Elson, the supermodel married to Jack White, performed with the bands as well." [Delighted & Charmed]
That review refers to the 1/15 Punch Brothers and Secret Sisters show at Bowery Ballroom where special guest Karen Elson joined both bands.

Punch Brothers will return to Bowery Ballroom on April 16th, this time for a revival of p-Bingo Night...

"p-Bingo Night is Punch Brothers' creative process (made slightly more entertaining, hopefully) on display at the Living Room [ on Thursday nights in 2009 and 2010]. In addition to other delights, you can expect to see the Brothers trying out new material, improving existing material, and appropriating material that they wish was theirs, i.e. Radiohead, Bach, D'Angelo, James King, etc., right in front of your very eyes... or ears, rather, though music is generally better seen than heard. Also, there will be Special Guests, the coattails of whom the Brothers will surely ride to fame and fortune! Please note: little to no bingo will be played."
Tickets for the April Bowery show are on sale. Check below for the full slate of PB dates which stretch from coast to coast and into June.

Among those dates are also two solo dates for Punch Brothers mandolin master Chris Thile. The first of those dates, Feb 8th, will see him team with Michael Daves for a sold-out date at Rockwood Music Hall. The second is March 2nd at Le Poisson Rouge with Gabriel Kahane and Brad Mehldau. Tickets are still available.

Gabriel Kahane also plays a show at Merkin Concert Hall as part of the Ecstatic Music Festival three days after LPR.

Tour dates videos below.

Jack White

Wanda Jackson, who will be flanked by the Third Man House Band featuring Jack White, will play sold out shows in Brooklyn and LA next week. If you didn't get your ticket for Ms Jackson, then you're in luck. "The Queen of Rock" will return to NYC one month later to play Bowery Ballroom on February 24, but note: the Third Man House Band is not billed as her band on the the Manhattan show. Tickets go on sale at noon.

We also have a pair of tickets to giveaway to the sold out Brooklyn show that Jack White is playing. Details below.

Wanda Jackson also has a pair of TV appearances lined up in the coming weeks; look for her on David Letterman on January 20th and Conan on January 25th. Jack White and the Third Man House Band will be playing at both of those.

Wanda is prepping to release her new Jack-White-produced-LP The Party Ain't Over via Third Man/Nonesuch Records on January 25th. The LP features Mr. White as well as his wife (Karen Elson), in addition to bandmates Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather/Raconteurs, also The Greenhornes) & Patrick Keeler (Raconteurs also The Greeenhornes), and other greats like Carl Broemel (My Morning Jacket). The LP features eleven covers from the past century, and you can check out the tracklisting below.

The Greenhornes are going on tour soon too. They play The Bell House on April 8th (tickets) and Maxwell's on April 9th (tickets).

The above picture is taken from a video where "label head Jack White, takes an on-camera minute to explain some of its latest creations. From the The Greeting Card Gatefold™ limited edition release of upcoming Wanda Jackson LP "The Party Aint Over" to the The Third Man Monkey Band™ - only at the store front in Nashville, TN. This fantastically old-time machine plays clips of exclusive, unreleased music from Third Man Records." That video, Wanda's full tour schedule and her tracklisting is below...

Are you in the holiday spirit yet? Last night (12/1) was the first of the 101.9 RXP "Yule Rock Holiday Concert Series" featuring Broken Bells (whose member Danger Mouse recently collaborated with Jack White) and Karen Elson (who is married to Jack White), a series that continues tommorrow night (12/3) with My Chemical Romance at the sold-out Hammerstein Ballroom (one of three upcoming NYC MY Chemical Romance shows). The show was also the start of a short stint of Broken Bells tour dates that will last through the middle of the month, hitting nine cities before closing up shop at Gibson Amphitheatre Universal City, California.

Karen Elson next appears in NYC as part of her group the Citizens Band at Highline Ballroom on December 18th...

"Equal parts show-stopping performers, political activists, eclectic tastemakers and headstrong personalities, The Citizens Band has been one of the most lauded and prominent staples of New York City nightlife for the past few years - a potent combination of the city's urban smarts, diverse style and forward-thinking attitude. Performers for "The Past is a Foreign Country" include Chelsea Bacon, Mr. Blue, Ian Buchanan, Michael Cavadias, Adam Crystal, Jorjee Douglass, Karen Elson, Sarah Sophie Flicker, Rachelle Garniez, Mike Jackson, Dave Lebleu, Mark McAdam, Angela McCluskey, Amy Miles, Jon Natchez, Jeff Palmiotti, Rain Phoenix, Kelly Pratt, Matt Ray, Ronin and Leah Siegel with direction by Calla Videt."
The show "promotes the new Blue Key campaign, tackling the topic of refugees and displaced people. The Blue Key campaign, organized by USA for UNHCR draws attention to the work of the UN Refugee Agency and the global refugee crisis." Tickets are on sale.

Were you at the Irving Plaza show? Did Broken Bells mention their Grammy nomination from the stage? Maybe RXP morning host Matt Pinfield said something about it?

Karen Elson @ Studio at Webster Hall
Karen Elson

Karen Elson played Williamsburg Waterfront on Sunday, June 20th with Band of Horses and Grizzly Bear. The night before that she headlined a show at Studio at Webster Hall along with Midnight Masses. Samantha Marble was there and wrote: "Looking back on the show I thought that Karen Elson having Midnight Masses open for her was a perfect balance in terms of setting the tone. Midnight Masses posess the kind of power and soul that forces you to see the light. Whereas Karen Elson sings songs gently but powerfully. The mystery in the tone of her voice makes you feel like you are sitting outside during twilight in the country. It's dark but everything is illuminated." Her pictures from that show are in this post.

Karen Elson doesn't have any more shows lined up, but Midnight Masses will be at Union Pool on June 27th with Starring, Wizardry and Skeletonbreath (a Northside show). They'll also be at Mercury Lounge on July 10th with Snowden (tickets) and Cake Shop on July 19th.

The next show at the Williamsburg Waterfront is Silversun Pickups, Against Me! and The Henry Clay People on Friday, June 25th.

Karen Elson's The Ghost Who Walks came out in May on Third Man Records, and a video from her release party set at the label's store/studio in Nashville is posted below (she also played the label's pop-up at SXSW). Conan O'Brien played the same Nashville space on June 10th. A live LP of Conan's performance is available for preorder from the label, and is expected by the end of July.

More pictures from the Studio at Webster Hall show and the above-mentioned video and tour dates are below...

Band of Horses
Grizzly Bear

As previously mentioned, Band of Horses (who played Grand Central two nights earlier), Grizzly Bear (who headline their own show at Governors Island in August) & Karen Elson (who played the Studio at Webster Hall one night earlier) played the first show of the summer at Williamsburg Waterfront on Sunday (6/20). More pictures from the sold out, ticketed concert, below...

Williamsburg Waterfront - June 20, 2010 (pic by Eric Polow)
Williamsburg Waterfront

Band of Horses had a busy weekend: Friday night they played Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central Terminal, Saturday they opened for Broken Social Scene and Pavement on Toronto Island, and Sunday they headlined their own sold-out gig at Williamsburg Waterfront, the first show of the season there, with Grizzly Bear and Karen Elson opening. Pictures on the way.

It was the first show at the Brooklyn park that was put on by AEG and Open Space Alliance (OSA). Like they did at McCarren, together they're running the ticketed shows at the Waterfront...

"After OSA managed more than 60 McCarren Park Pool events, we successfully negotiated a new venue for the music to continue. This summer, OSA will present and manage concerts on the Williamsburg waterfront. There are a number of benefit concerts that help us subsidize free programming, and raise funds for parks improvements." [OSA]
Sunday's Band of Horses shows was one of those "benefit" concerts. The next of those is Silversun Pickups, Against Me! and The Henry Clay People on Friday, June 25th.

The most obvious difference from the 2009 JellyNYC Pool Parties is the stage's new location and bigger size. The stage is now on the park's east side, facing the water. That means the setting sun is no longer shining in the crowd's eyes (good) but you'll have to turn around to get a view of the Manhattan skyline (bad). The soundsystem was also reportedly better. That said, the stage is being taken up and down before and after each of the ticketed shows, so it remains to be seen what they'll come up with for the upcoming free events at the venue, or even the future ticketed shows.

The showgoing area is fenced in a bit different than last year's Pool Parties, and since they are pay shows don't expect to be able to see for free. Like they do in Prospect Park, Rachel Kowal said, "they put up huge banners on the fence blocking even the most minimal view". Again, it was the first show there this summer, so there's no guarantee things will stay the same. Hopefully that's at least true of the concession and beer lines (which we heard took up to 40 minutes).

The same park will be home once again to the Jelly NYC Pool Parties, whose seven (not eight) free shows kick off July 11th. We're told the still-TBA series has a good chance of getting announced this week. We also have some guesses out there already on who will appear on the lineup.

(also worth noting - two of Sunday's bands are Pool Party alums - Grizzly Bear closed the free series in 2009, and Band of Horses played the Pool in 2007.)

Grizzly Bear have another outdoor show this summer - they play Governors Island (also ticketed) on August 12th with the Walkmen and Gang Gang Dance. Tickets are still on sale.

We'll have pictures from the show coming later. For now, one more pic and some videos from the gig are posted below...

Continue reading "Williamsburg Waterfront kicked off the summer season on Sunday (w/ Band of Horses, Grizzly Bear & Karen Elson)"

Sound Fix Records (the store in Williamsburg) will have five pairs of guaranteed entry passes for the free Band of Horses show tonight (doors 5:30pm) at Grand Central Terminal's Vanderbilt Hall ("The line starts at the 42nd St Entrance.). Sound Fix opens at noon and the passes go to the first five people who come in asking. Band of Horses is also offering a chance to "cut the line" via Facebook.

Band of Horses play a nonfree show on Sunday at Williamsbug Waterfront (the first of the summer there) with Grizzly Bear and Karen Elson.

Karen, whose debut, The Ghost Who Walks, came out in May, also plays with Midnight Masses on Saturday, June 20th at the Studio at Webster Hall. Tickets are still on sale.

Pearl Jam

Band of Horses will headline an RXP-presented show at Williamsburg Waterfront (North 8th Street & Kent Avenue at the East River State Park) in Brooklyn on June 20th. Grizzly Bear and Karen Elson are also on the bill. Tickets will go on presale Friday at 10am and then general sale Saturday at 11am.

Band of Horses' third record, Infinite Arms, will be released on May 18th. That's the same day they'll open for Pearl Jam at the Prudental Center in Newark. They also open for Pearl Jam three days later at Madison Square Garden. All tour dates below...

Karen Elson

Karen Elson, wife of one Jack White, played her first New York show Monday night (March. 22) at Le Poisson Rouge in Manhattan, showcasing songs from her forthcoming album 'The Ghost That Walks'.

Oldham-born Elson played acoustic guitar and was backed by a five-piece band during her hour-long set. Prior rumours of an appearance by her husband were proved false, although White produced and plays drums on Elson's album, out on May 25.

It was only Elson's fourth solo appearance, though Elson herself is far from inexperienced, having contributed vocals to Robert Plant's 'Dreamland' album in 2003 and duetted with Cat Power in 2006 on a cover of Serge Gainsbourg's 'I Love You (Me Neither)'. [Spinner]

One of Karen's first three solo performances took place at the Third Man Records pop up store (aka Franks Deli & Grocery) at SXSW in Austin on Saturday, March 20th. Samantha Marble got some pictures and reports:
The line to get into Karen Elson's last performance at SXSW was more than half way down the block only moments before the show was scheduled to take place. The show took place in a small, dimly lit room in the very back of Frank's Deli & Grocery. The setting was a perfect accompaniment to her enchanting voice and haunting lyrics. In between songs joked around with the crowd, explained what inspired her songs and raved about the musicians that accompanied her. The entire performance stood out as one of the loveliest shows I went to during SXSW.

Karen Elson

Karen Elson's debut album, The Ghost Who Walks, comes out on Third Man/XL this summer.

While this album marks Karen's solo debut, she has spent 6 years as a founding member of New York City-based political cabaret The Citizens Band and has been involved in several musical projects over the past few years, including adding her vocals to tracks for Robert Plant and recording a duet with Cat Power for a Serge Gainsbourg tribute album ("Je Taime Moi Non Plus"). The Ghost Who Walks was recorded at Third Man Studios in Tennessee with [Elson's husband & record label head] Jack White as producer and features 12 songs - 11 original compositions by Karen and 1 cover of a song by her Citizens Band cohort Rachelle Garniez.
An acoustic live version of the record's first single, "The Ghost Who Walks," is posted below.

A full version of the song will be released on 7" on March 17th. One of the places you can get it is the Third Man Records pop-up store coming to SXSW/Austin, where she'll be playing. Third Man ran a pop-up store in New York City last July, where the Dead Weather played. Her schedule for the fest is below.

She'll also be at NYC's (Le) Poisson Rouge on Monday, March 22nd. Tickets are on sale.
